In what might be called The Sequel, this represents the second portion of the interview I conducted on Feb. 12 with Temple Grandin, onstage at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. We covered a wide range of topics last week, though that discussion featured a preponderance of autism talk, hardly surprising given Grandin's expertise, personal experience […] The post Temple Grandin, autistic animal scientist and author–The Sequel first appeared on Talking Animals.
Today we have two interviews, followed by a fantastic discussion about regenerative agriculture and the use of glyphosate. INTERVIEW 1: The Food, Farming and Countryside Commission has unveiled research, which shows that the British public reject “nanny state” excuses and instead overwhelmingly back state intervention to tackle our health, climate and nature crises. Dr Courtney Scott is the Director of Policy and Research at the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission – ffinlo Costain asks her whether politicians are more interested in the so-called “nanny state” than citizens? INTERVIEW 2: The Global Terrorism Index 2023 shows that the ten countries most impacted by terrorism are also experiencing poverty, weak governance and conflict. Food and water scarcity - in part linked to climate change - act as a threat multiplier, accelerating instability. David Wells is an independent global security consultant and former head of research and analysis for the Counter-Terrorism Directorate of the United Nations. ffinlo asks him how climate change is affecting terrorist recruitment globally? DISCUSSION: This week's debate on 8point9.com has been centred on whether glyphosate is critical to regenerative farming. There are plenty of passionate farmers on both sides of this argument - but we invited Attila Kökény, a regenerative agriculture consultant from Hungary, and Marcus Link from New Foundation Farms to address this question in a series of articles. In this programme the debate becomes a conversation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/farmgate/message
Lucinda and Alina are joined by Courtney Scott, head of policy and research at the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, and James Goodman, director of partnerships at the Local Trust.Courtney and James make the case for why all third sector leaders need to be active participants in debates on food availability and affordability, regardless of their specific organisational focus.James describes how food insecurity and food poverty are indicative of wider insecurity and poverty issues that community organisations are seeking to alleviate. Food, he argues, is a good place to start to strengthen communities and enable them to become better partners to third sector organisations.Courtney stresses the importance of charities' lived experience to help influence food policy, and draws on a new FFCC report on how funders and communities can work together on longer term food security solutions.Charity Changed My Life features the story of Phoebe, who attributes getting back on her feet following the breakdown of her relationship to the advice and support she received from Gingerbread, a charity that supports single parents.Do you have stories of people whose lives have been transformed for the better thanks to your charity? If so, we'd like to hear them! All it takes is a short voice message to be featured on this podcast. Nikita Dhawan, Founder of Youth for Animals, interviews Courtney Scott, Elephant Consultant for In Defense of Animals (IDA), about their Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants campaign.Courtney Scott is the Elephant Consultant for In Defense of Animals (IDA). Located in Portland, Oregon, she has spent the last 15 years working to advance the cause of captive elephants. In 2008, after witnessing the Oregon Zoo's senior elephant Packy pacing in his pathetically small cage, she was motivated to launch the non profit Free the Oregon Zoo Elephants (FOZE). Seeing Packy's suffering also inspired her to produce a film exposing the plight of captive animals. IDA has been a staunch ally for FOZE, and collaborated on many protests and outreach events. IDA with FOZE successfully lobbied to get the zoo to stop its use of bull hooks and IDA's efforts led to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) ban on bull hooks for all its member zoos. As of 2021, Courtney has been busy working for IDA on the Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants campaign, and is also engaged in developing more ways for IDA to support the cause of captive and wild elephants in Asia and Africa.

We've had vegan sausage rolls, Meat Free Mondays, impossible burgers… the list goes on. But while there's been a polarising focus on meat eating vs veganism, we might be missing the wider point – that good quality meat and dairy produced to high environmental and animal welfare standards can and should exist in a healthy, balanced diet. But are we currently eat too much? Alice Ritchie, the CLA's Climate Change Lead, will discuss the future of our food with Dan Crossley from the Food Ethics Council, and Dr Courtney Scott, Senior Policy Researcher from the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission. You will hear what an ethical and sustainable diet looks like, what food trends and consumption patterns mean for farmers across the UK and, finally, how these will create new markets and opportunities that farmers can capitalise on. Produced by http://Fastpitch.TV - This week Courtney Scott talks about proper footwork for catchers. Courtney Scott is the assistant softball coach at the University of Louisville. She talks about the firm base and how important it is to stay low. Catchers need to be comfortable. Coach Scott goes through the proper footwork to do a throw down to second. She talks about the pop and the transition is at the ear. The most important is so that the catchers are comfortable. One of the catchers that Coach Scott works with does a pivot throw. An issue she has is that she gets too wide of a base. Catchers that are not strong there is a step through motion that could work for them. There is also a throw from your knees. With a runner going to third make sure that you are clearing the batter by stepping behind or around the batter. Always a good idea to lead with your back foot, decreases the amount of steps that are needed. She also talks about proper footwork to pick up a bunt as well as blocking mechanics. Produced by http://Fastpitch.TV - This week Courtney Scott talks about the importance of the drop ball. Courtney Scott is the assistant softball coach at the University of Louisville. She talks about the importance of the drop ball for the fastpitch pitcher. The advantage of a good drop ball is that it keeps the ball in the park in an offensive game. Allows the runners to only advance base to base. There are four ways to throw it. The peel drop, is the hardest to buy into but one of the most effective. You want to grab it on the "C" and put as many fingertips on the seam and as close together as you can. The reason for the "C" is to get on the four seams. It creates a strong spin. Don't see a ton of break with this pitch, it is working on its own, but it is very easy on the body and be disciplined with. The next drop ball is the rolling peel. It is held the exact same way as the peel drop. You come through with a relaxed wrist and snap down. The roll over is on the "U" versus on the "C". On the right side of the "U" and using pressure points on your fingers. The last drop is the pull back. holding it the same as the peel drop. The difference is that you release it at your back hip. Full force is better to get through your body and all the way through to your catcher. If you haven't seen part 1 make sure to check it out! http://SoftballJunk.com is a great resource for all of your softball bat needs. Fastpitch softball coach Courtney Scott finishes up her fourth and final portion of her catching clinic. Several of the softball coaches express their concern with whether to teach their catchers to call the game. Courtney replies with the answer that it is never too early to teach a catcher to call a game. It teaches them to be more involved in the game as well as keeping the pitcher and catcher more connected during a game. She also explains the importance of the catcher to be strong in guiding the team. The catcher should have a prescence that other teams fear and lead her softball team. As a catcher the team will rely on you to be the backbone for the reason that the catcher is a part of every play on the field. Be sure to check out part 1 if you haven't already! http://SoftballJunk.com is a great place to find the right softball bat for you! Fastpitch softball Coach Courtney Scott starts off part 3 of her clinic with stressing the importance of blocking the plate and doing so safely. Also, she asserts that the catcher and pitcher relationship must be solid. Those two players must trust each other for the reason that they have to hold each other accountable for what they do on the softball field. Courtney talks of situations in which she has had to be a part of situations where younger catchers are made to work together with veteran catchers and explains that not matter anyones age or rank, but everyone should welcome new advice and always work together to improve the dynamic of the softball team.
