In this episode of the Rising Lioness podcast, host Erica Salvemini and guest Devan Schowe discuss the truth behind the zoo industry. They shed light on the exploitation and mistreatment of wild animals in captivity, as well as the recent partnership between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The podcast highlights the need for better regulations and resources to rehabilitate animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. The podcast starts by addressing the fact that 23% of species in zoos are threatened with extinction, indicating that the majority (77%) are not. Despite this, zoos continue to keep and breed animals. The partnership between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums aims to provide homes for animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. However, critics argue that it prioritizes profits over animal welfare. Animals seized or abandoned during the illegal wildlife trade often suffer from poor conditions during transportation, including dehydration, stress, hunger, and sickness. Immediate expert care is crucial for their survival. The podcast argues that instead of funneling resources into zoos, efforts should be focused on rehabilitating and rewilding these animals. Zoos profit from the entertainment of animals, perpetuating the idea that exploiting them for profit is acceptable. The illegal wildlife trade is a multi-billion dollar industry, making it the fourth-largest global illegal trade. Social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook play a significant role in facilitating the trade. The podcast emphasizes the need for awareness and action to combat the exploitation of wildlife. It calls on individuals to educate themselves and others, especially children, about the issue. It also highlights the importance of supporting organizations that prioritize animal welfare and conservation.

Devan Schowe, a campaign's associate for Born Free USA delves into the "Oceans Away from Home" report, which highlights the suffering of fish in captivity. Fish often face challenges that parallel those of larger, more commonly studied captive animals. This report emphasizes the challenges these aquatic creatures encounter, including compromised welfare and limited opportunities for species-specific behaviors. A research bias further sidelines fish, underscoring the need to value all animals, irrespective of their similarities or differences from humans.Additionally, the rising surge of octopus farming in Spain, raises ethical concerns due to the remarkable intelligence of these creatures. Octopus farming subjects highly intelligent and solitary beings to stressful and unnatural conditions, posing ethical and ecological dilemmas. This industry's potential consequences for octopus populations, marine ecosystems, and animal welfare are of great concern, especially given the absence of protective regulations within the European Union.Furthermore, our discussion uncovers "The Lies Zoos Tell," highlighting the lack of care for animals in some of these facilities. Even accredited zoos, striving to replicate natural habitats, often fall short in providing essential elements for animal well-being. This prompts a critical question: Is keeping animals captive in zoos justifiable? The resounding answer is "NO."Join us in this conversation, challenging our perspectives on animal treatment and advocating for a more compassionate approach to their well-being.

Rewilding, a concept rooted in letting nature reclaim its territory, emphasizes the need to reintroduce keystone species to restore ecological balance. Ron explains how rewilding helps to manage ecosystems more efficiently and highlights the case of Yellowstone's wolf reintroduction, which led to a cascade of positive ecological effects. The concept of continental wildways involves creating extensive wildlife corridors to connect natural areas, enhancing biodiversity and promoting species migration, especially in the face of climate change. Ron Sutherland emphasizes the importance of partnerships with land trusts and conservation organizations to establish these corridors and protect critical habitats. He cites specific examples like the Eastern Wildway, Rocky Mountain Wildway, and Pacific Wildway, each tailored to the unique needs of the region and its wildlife. The wildway approach is not only beneficial for wildlife but also aids in climate change adaptation by facilitating species' movement northward as temperatures rise. Wildlands Network collaborates with various organizations to implement these corridors and make progress on the ground, marking significant strides in conservation efforts. You can learn more about Wildlands Network and support their work online at: https://wildlandsnetwork.org/ About NicoleIn a journey fueled by a profound love for animals and nature, a former physical therapist from Chicago has transformed her life into a dedicated mission to protect endangered species. Peter discusses his initial involvement in the field of animal ethics, emphasising his ethical background and realisation of the ethical issues in animal treatment, particularly in factory farming. He highlights the importance of considering the well-being of all conscious beings, not just humans, in ethical decision-making.Peter explains the concept of animal liberation philosophy, which advocates giving equal consideration to the interests and suffering of animals, challenging the notion that intelligence should be the sole determinant of moral consideration. He draws parallels between speciesism and other forms of discrimination, such as racism and sexism, to highlight the moral inconsistency in favouring humans based solely on intelligence. The interview touches on the updated edition of Singer's book, "Animal Liberation," and its relevance to contemporary animal welfare issues. Singer discusses the progress made by the animal rights movement and the challenges it still faces, particularly concerning factory farming. He addresses counterarguments and the complexities of ethical positions, especially when it comes to rearing animals in humane conditions for food consumption.Peter provides insights into the harsh realities of modern-day factory farming, focusing on the overcrowded and inhumane conditions in which chickens are raised. He highlights the health and welfare problems caused by rapid growth due to selective breeding and the high mortality rates among young chickens. Singer underscores the need for reform in the treatment of animals in the agricultural industry.https://petersinger.info

For as long as humans have been around the Coyote has been one of those species vilified and killed for almost no reason. Yes once in a rare blue moon one may kill livestock but the overwhelming majority of livestock, and domestic pets, are not killed by coyotes. Despite the scientific facts that coyotes are a boon to a healthy ecosystem the hype and false narrative making them out to be monsters persists. Coyotes help keep down the rodent population naturally which would eliminate the use of deadly poisons. Learn about the benefits of co-existing with this amazing species and what effective sustainable alternatives can be used to protect livestock, domestic pets and property. We should be embracing this species not killing in blood sport contests. In response to this realization, she took the initiative to develop the Pet Pardon app, which stands as the pioneering solution of its kind. This groundbreaking platform eases the burden on shelters and rescues by establishing a simpler channel for animal advocates to contribute donations and support animals listed for euthanasia.Sheryl's passion for animals has been a lifelong devotion, evident through her history of providing a home for numerous stray animals and contributing to various animal organizations worldwide. The Rising Lioness hosted by Erica Salvemini In this episode of The Rising Lioness Podcast on All About Animals Radio, Host Erica Salvemini speaks candidly with Chris Cavaliere, Research Director at The Beyond Cruelty Foundation about their weighty manifesto introduction piece titled, Beyond Animal Exploitation. WARNING: Beyond Animal Exploitation document may be upsetting to some audiences https://beyondcruelty.org/beyond-animal-exploitation/ Authored by Chris Cavaliere, this important document delivers a bold and staggering statement about the exploitation of non-human sentient beings on our planet. It urgently asks for a course correction to curb these human-caused disastrous effects and cruelties to avoid the mass extinction of life; for non-human animals as well as for humankind. This document collates a significant collection of evidence to portray a fact-based account of humankind's systemic animal exploitation which has caused a profoundly detrimental effect on the future sustainability of life. The urgency of this document's content is a startling must-read, but at a slow pace, for its nearly 300 references provide the reader accessibility to articles of visual accounts, empirical science, and data sources, illustrating how human and nonhuman existence is inextricably connected. The moral of this important factually backed story proposes that our ability to find life beyond cruelty is a critical determining factor, a missing goal, vital to our continued existence on this planet. The Beyond Cruelty Foundation's manifesto strives to have SDG18 - Zero Animal Exploitation http://www.sdg18.org become global policy through the UN's *SDGs - Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
