Boston Massachusetts, Suspicious Death of her Father. Was It Murder? The Boston we know today is in many ways different from the Boston of the 1970s. Organized Crime was Rampant in Boston, Massachusetts and the surrounding areas. There were prominent Italian Mob Organized Crime Gangs. Also Irish Organized Crime groups flourished and prospered. There were many accusations and subsequent arrests and convictions in local and state police during that time. There were also FBI Agents arrested and convicted for crimes while working with organized crime group informants. Ann tells the story and more as a guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, which is available as a free podcast on their website on platforms like Apple, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Ann Flynn Dickinson is our guest and tells the tale from her childhood all the way to her adult years of the mystery surrounding the death of her Father Owen Flynn. Check out the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Boston is a city with a storied history of resilience and rebellion and is no stranger to mysteries. From its cobblestone streets to its glittering skyline, the city holds secrets, and some stories never fade. One such enigma dates back to December 1972, when Owen Flynn, a West End bartender, vanished under suspicious circumstances. His case intertwines with the city's dark era of organized crime and has sparked renewed interest thanks to his determined daughter, Ann Flynn Dickinson. Look for more on the story in platforms like Medium and Newsbreak. A City Steeped in Organized Crime The Boston of the 1970s was a hotbed for organized crime. Italian mobsters and Irish gangs like the Winter Hill Gang ruled the streets, and corruption infiltrated law enforcement, even touching the FBI. This tumultuous backdrop framed Flynn's mysterious death, which some suspect was no accident. Boston Massachusetts, Suspicious Death of her Father. Was It Murder? The interview with here is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, which is available as a free podcast on their website on platforms like Apple, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Flynn disappeared on a frigid December evening, leaving his car abandoned on the Granite Avenue Bridge. Though initially presumed a suicide, the details raised eyebrows. The low elevation of the bridge and icy patches on the Neponset River made such a scenario improbable. The lack of evidence or a clear motive for suicide only deepened the mystery. A Daughter's Quest for Answers Ann Flynn Dickinson was just a child when her father went missing. Now an adult, she is determined to uncover the truth. "I knew something was wrong when my mother said he didn't come home," she recalls. Her father's death certificate listed the cause as "unknown," a frustratingly vague conclusion. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. In 1972, Flynn had just purchased a new car and a home, suggesting he had reasons to live. He was also a silent partner in a new bar, Downey and Judge, in Boston's West End. But borrowing $10,000, likely from dangerous sources, may have placed him in peril. Boston Massachusetts, Suspicious Death of her Father. Organized Crime's Shadow The timing of Flynn's disappearance coincided with a bloody gang war between James "Whitey" Bulger's Winter Hill Gang and the Mullen Gang. Bulger, who later became one of America's most notorious gangsters, was known for his brutal methods. Could Flynn have been a victim of gang violence? The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, which is available as a free podcast on their website on platforms like Apple, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. In her pursuit of the truth, Dickinson even wrote to Bulger while he was imprisoned. Surprisingly, he replied. While Bulger denied involvement, his letter hinted at other possibilities, including betrayal by business partners or mistaken identity. His chilling tone left more questions than answers. The Granite Avenue Bridge Discovery The most haunting piece of the puzzle remains Flynn's abandoned car on the Granite Avenue Bridge. Dickinson herself identified it while being driven to her aunt's home. The car, locked with the keys on the dashboard, was never thoroughly investigated. Police dismissed it as a "casual search," neglecting to dust for fingerprints or search for evidence. Boston Massachusetts, Suspicious Death of her Father. Platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify make these stories more accessible, allowing listeners to become informed and vigilant. A month later, Flynn's body washed up on Carson Beach in South Boston. Officially, he was presumed drowned, but law enforcement and family members questioned this conclusion. Quincy Police Lt. Bob Gillan, a seasoned diver, dismissed the notion of suicide, stating, "It doesn't pass the sniff test." Echoes of Boston's Gangland Era Flynn's story resurfaced during Bulger's high-profile trial in 2013. Families of other victims approached law enforcement, wondering if their loved ones had also fallen prey to Bulger's gang. Flynn's case fit a pattern, abandoned vehicles, missing persons, and unsolved murders. Be sure to follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Bulger's letter to Dickinson acknowledged the brutal realities of gangland Boston, suggesting Flynn's death might have been orchestrated for insurance money or due to business disputes. Yet, he maintained his innocence regarding Flynn's demise. The Legacy of a Mystery Decades later, Flynn's death continues to captivate true crime enthusiasts and historians. His daughter's persistence has kept the story alive, highlighting the murky intersection of organized crime, corruption, and loss in 1970s Boston. Boston Massachusetts, Suspicious Death. The case has gained attention through books like Code Black by Bill Fleming and Joe Peters and podcasts on platforms like Spotify and Apple. Social media outlets like Facebook and Instagram also amplify the story, bringing it to a new generation. A City's Unanswered Questions Boston's history is riddled with tales of intrigue, but few are as personal as Owen Flynn's. His death is more than a cold case; it's a reflection of a city grappling with its identity during a turbulent time. For Ann Flynn Dickinson, the quest for answers remains a deeply personal journey. Boston Massachusetts, Suspicious Death of her Father. Was It Murder? As Boston moves forward, the shadows of its past linger. Was Flynn's death a tragic accident, a calculated murder, or something in between? The truth remains elusive, but the story of Owen Flynn ensures the question will not be forgotten. The Jersey Shore Morning Show With Lou and Shannon On Demand
I had one of the best days of my radio career: I got to speak with one of my favorite musical artists of all time - John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting. His albums Slice and Bookmarks are two of my favorite albums ever, and "Superman (It's Not Easy) is my favorite song of all time. I was a Superman fan from a young age, so naturally, the song resonated with me because of that. My dad would rock me to sleep to the song most nights. I'll forever connect the song with my dad and I growing up. Over the years, the song has taken many forms for me, and it has gotten me through some hard times. Townsquare Spotlight w/ John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting Hence why it was an honor to speak with John Ondrasik this weekend. John and I talk about his latest "Music Matters Challenge" in conjunction with Music in Our Schools Month. We also talk about how John is no stranger to writing songs with strong social messages. His latest single "OK" dives into the catastrophes happening in Israel. John shares accounts of his recent visit to Israel and performing for refugees. Lastly, we talk of the legacy songs like "Superman (It's Not Easy)" and "100 Years" have had on the social consciousness. Catching Up w/ GRAMMY Nominated Five For Fighting In the two decades since Five for Fighting's first major single, “Superman (It's Not Easy),” hit the stratosphere, Five For Fighting (aka John Ondrasik), has released six studio LPs, including the platinum-certified “America Town” and “The Battle for Everything;” and the top-10 charting “Two Lights,” along with an EP and live albums. A post 9-11 anthem, Ondrasik performed “Superman (It's Not Easy),” at the 2001 Concert for New York, a benefit show at Madison Square Garden that honored first responders and the fallen about a month after the tragic September 11th attacks. Ondrasik has penned major hits, including the chart-topping “100 Years,” “The Riddle,” “Chances,” “World,” and “Easy Tonight,” which have earned tens of millions of streams and placed him as a top-10 Hot Adult Contemporary artist for the 2000s. The reflective “100 Years” has joined “Superman (It's Not Easy)” as part of the American Songbook and continues to stand the test of time. Five For Fighting's music has also been featured in more than 350 films, television shows, and commercials, including the Oscar-winning “The Blind Side,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “The Sopranos,” and the CBS drama, “Code Black.” For more information visit: www.fiveforfighting.com. Five For Fighting's "Music Matters Challenge" for Music in Our Schools Month Tying in with "Music In Our Schools Month,"GRAMMY® nominated John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting and The Tullman Family Office, through its operational philanthropic wing Tullman Community Ventures, announce the “Music Matters Challenge,” which launched on March 26, and is running through April 30; with the Grand Prize winners to be announced on May 14. The national online music challenge asks Americans to create an original rendition of the song “Let Music Fill My World,” a song recorded and written by Five For Fighting's John Ondrasik and students of the Farragut Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois; while sharing their own story of a time where music greatly impacted them, changed their life, or moved them to where they remember that story today. The challenge is designed to spotlight the magic of music and bring awareness to the generational impact of removing music from schools. To enter the contest, visit: www.letmusicfillmyworld.com. Let Music Fill My World Let Music Fill My World The “Music Matters Challenge” is hosted by “Let Music Fill My World,” an organization founded by The Tullman Family Office, and is on a mission to ensure that every child in America has access to music education in their schools. Two Grand Prize winners will be awarded – one for individual entries: $10,000 in cash, plus the opportunity to participate in selecting a music teacher for an under-resourced school to receive a salary of up to $300,000 for three years; and one for school entries, where the winning school receives a $25,000 school grant. Let Music Fill MY World Let Music Fill MY World “Let Music Fill My World” was created to ensure every child in America has access to music education in their schools with efforts to put the mission in action by Placing Music Teachers in Schools - every year, the Tullman Family Office will fund at least one full-time music education teacher in a school in America that does not have one, for a three-year salary up to $300k. Maximizing Fundraising for Music Education Nationwide by paving a path for significant fundraising opportunities through concerts and other artistic ventures with iconic artists to increase nonprofit funding in support of music education in schools and Increasing Congressional Attention on Federal Funding for Music Education by using the Let Music Fill My World platform to urge Members of Congress to support robust funding for music education in schools. Says Ondrasik, "In speaking with philanthropist Cayley Tullman about how we can best support music in the schools in inner-city Chicago, I thought of my mom, Anna Marie. Mom was a USC music grad and piano teacher. When LA Unified cut all music funding for schools in the 1970s, she volunteered at Van Gogh Elementary School and began putting on full musicals with the 5th and 6th grade classes. The impact that my mother had on me, and my classmates resonates over 50 years later. Many students still keep in touch with my mom, and for the most, music has continued to be instrumental in their lives. That is why I was so proud to collaborate with students at Farragut Academy in Chicago in writing “Let Music Fill my World.” Though the title was mine, the lyrics are the kids! That effort, due to the Tullman Family Office, now provides a full-time music teacher for three years at Farragut! Lives will be changed for the better. The “Music Matters Challenge” will bring our mission and efforts to the nation, raising awareness for music in the schools while letting everyone sing and lend their voice to such a critical cause while having fun, and again, participating in a prize that will bring another full-time music teacher to a school in desperate need.” Adds Cayley Tullman, President of The Tullman Family Office and former U.S. Diplomat: "I remember sitting on the floor in front of the couch at my grandparents' home in California, mesmerized watching my Uncle Stan play guitar and sing. Stan struggled with mental health and addiction, but when playing music, he shined so bright. ?Looking back, I believe music was his solace and gave him a way to express himself that he could not do with words alone. ?I miss him a lot and know he would be proud of our mission to connect more young people with the magic of music.” Stay up to date on all things “Let Music Fill My World,” and the “Music Matters Challenge” on socials here. Check out video message from John Ondrasik and Cayley Tullman. Five For Fighting's "OK" is Not a Political Message, But a Moral One John recently released a new single/music video, “OK” – a composition that expresses Ondrasik's heartfelt view about the October 7th Hamas attacks in Israel, while addressing the cultural aftermath both in America and around the world. Michael Ramirez, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, drew the single cover image. The State of Israel and the Israeli Foreign Minister both shared the video. Ondrasik states, “'OK' is not a political message, but a moral one. A call to action. The final image of the ‘OK' music video is Martin Luther King and his historic call to every man and woman on this earth: ‘He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.' Thankfully, as happens in the darkest of times, there are heroes in our midst. Some are in this video, several have names that we know, others will never be known.”
Five for Fighting, the stage name of singer/singwriter John Ondrasik, has some crazy timing. He popped over to Israel for a five day immersion in the reality and the pain of our post-October 7th reality. And he was in Tel Aviv on the night that the Islamic Republic of Iran launched more than 300 attack drones and ballistic missiles at us. As we now know, 99% of the offensive weapons were intercepted. Beyond miraculously. But within minutes of Ondrasik performing his amazing new song – “OK” – about October 7th and this seriously messed up world we live in – the Home Front Command issued directives country-wide for everyone to seek shelter. Iran was attacking imminently. We were told 24-48 hours. It turned out to be much less. Ondrasik could have left that night – he was travelling with his young son. But he did not. He stayed. And that tells you everything you need to know about the man. Thank you, John. He performed on Saturday night at Hostage Square at the big weekly support rally for hostages and their families. Moments after he finished his set I went backstage to congratulate him on a magnificent and moving performance. Within minutes we were all hurrying home. I caught up with John on Saturday midday - as we were waiting to see what Iran would do - and we had a great talk about the moral cowardice in the west that is emboldening violent extremism. He understands that it's not just about Israel but that western democracy and freedoms are threatened by this surge of Marxist and extreme Islamist violence. Since the introduction to this podcast was recorded, the 7-year old Beduin girl who I mention having been critically injured, has died. Her tragic fatality is the only one. A number of people were injured by missile and drone debris and there was some damage to a major Israeli Air Force base. Ondrasik stayed on for the full five days. Five for Fighting. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing high alert regarding Iran and its proxies in the region, he was unable to visit the site of the Nova music festival. But I am confident that John Ondrasik will be back. Not only is his music beautiful but he is one of those rare artists who has a moral backbone and is speaking out, no matter the consequences. The world needs more John Ondrasiks. Five for Fighting. Go Leafs! You really don't want to miss this amazing discussion. Or the video for the song. “OK.”Except. National Animal Rights Day is a unique event coming up on June 2, 2024 and today we have the creator of this day of action, Aylam Orian. Aylam is a Hollywood actor, filmmaker and animal rights activist. With his non-profit "Our Planet. Theirs Too." he has established The National Animal Rights Day (N.A.R.D.) – a day of moving events dedicated to animals and their rights, which are held simultaneously in major cities every June. NARD events are now held in 50 countries around the world. He is also the creator of The Declaration of Animal Rights – a vegan, animal liberation document that details the rights all animals have as living beings on planet Earth – which has been translated to 23 languages. As an actor, he has appeared in numerous known films and TV shows (30 Rock, Code Black, NCIS: LA, The Informer, Strargate Origins), and he wll be seen next in the new TV show about The Holocaust, “We Were the Lucky Ones.” Aylam tells the story of how he started The National Animal Rights Day in 2011 and how the day of action has grown every year and spread across the globe. He also tells us about the inspiration behind the creation of The Declaration of Animal Rights, how it reflects the UN declaration of human rights, and how it's a roadmap for a future of compassionate human-animal relations. Hope and Aylam also get into a discussion on best strategies for animal advocates and how the trajectory of the movement, in our opinion, is out of balance. Aylam also gives us some insight into just how vegan-friendly Hollywood really is and some hopeful signs of veganism on a soap! Join us for this inspiring discussion. I had the pleasure of interviewing Christina Vidal Mitchell and she is so kind and sweet, it was a wonderful interview that I hope you all enjoy. You might recognize her from Brink, Freak Friday, Taina, See No Evil, Code Black, Training Day (series), Sneaky Pete, Grand Hotel, United We Fall, and now from Primo, plus many other things. I have been a fan for a long time and still randomly think about Taina. I cannot recommend Primo enough, it is on Freevee and there are 8 episodes, so go watch it and that way we can make sure we get more seasons. John Ondrasik - Singer and Songwriter, Five For Fighting In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien captures a solid bit of advice from Bilbo, directed toward his nephew Frodo. He says, “It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.” In the pursuit of success, it's tempting to chase shiny objects. That's certainly true in the music industry. But in spite of having two platinum albums, hundreds of credits on soundtracks, ads, and tv shows, AND composing a song that brought America together in the days following 9/11, today's guest has stayed grounded, even as he continued to dream big dreams. Together, we'll consider the question: How can you stay true to yourself as a leader? A conversation with John Ondrasik, AKA Five For Fighting, on this episode of Lead With a Question.
