So why don't you grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Toussaint Louverture Part I...Flip Flopping for Freedom! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/100proofhistory/message
Today's episode of the Black History Unveiled Podcast marks the third and final part of the Haitian Revolution series. In the previous episode, we witnessed the outbreak of the revolt and the successful expulsion of the invading British and Spanish forces by the enslaved people of Saint-Domingue. However, instead of peace, the so-called "War of the Knives" ensued, with leaders of the newly liberated population vying for control of the colony. After two years of conflict, the former slave Toussaint Louverture emerged as the victor. But what had he really won? Officially, Saint-Domingue still remained under French sovereignty. Our story picks up when the French are gearing up to assert their authority. Louverture and the rest of the freed slaves are faced with an overpowering enemy and impossible odds, with the violence in Saint-Domingue reaching apocalyptic levels. The episode also provides keys to understanding why Haiti is in such a vulnerable position today. You can find Black History Unveiled wherever you get your podcasts.
In this great episode of Guerrilla History, we are joined by the creative team behind the new graphic novel Toussaint Louverture: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History! This tremendous work is the graphic novelization of a long lost CLR James play about the Haitian Revolution (which, incidentally, starred the great Paul Robeson the only time it was staged). In this conversation, we talk about this play and the process of adapting it, as well as the objectives behind doing so. A great discussion about how to make subjects like the Haitian Revolution more accessible to broad audiences! Sakina Karimjee is a theatre designer and draughtsperson, an activist and socialist and co-creator of graphic novels with her partner Nic Watts. Nic Watts is an illustrator, activist and socialist. He has created artwork for numerous fiction and non-fiction books for children and adults, as well as other publications, websites, political campaigns and newspapers. What didn't we discuss in this wide-ranging part 2/3 discussion with Dr. Marlene Daut on the intellectual history of the Haitain revolution? Well, she took a hammer to Bonaparte and his white supremacist sympathizers. We talked about how the terms enslaved & enslavers can be unintentionally problematic. You will learn how Haitian History is both local and global. Other topics covered by Dr. Marlene L. Daut: some of the famous and lesser-known eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Haitian revolutionaries, pamphleteers, and political thinkers whose extraordinary deeds, coupled with their systems of knowledge and interpretation played center stage during the Age of Revolutions; the 1801 Haitian constitution; Louverture's definition of "free"; that deeds & discourse are two sides of the same coin (my framing); We touched briefly on the only none cross-dresser I know of in Haitian history-- Romaine la Prophetess; French hypocrisy (surprise!) on "universalism" and the Rights of Man. Stay until the end of this episode to hear an original Cameroonian piece by the Theologian, Dr. Roch Ntankeh. This outro was commissioned & licensed by Neg Mawon Media. In this episode we talk about a forthcoming graphic novel adaptation of C.L.R. James' play Toussaint Louverture: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History. The text of this graphic novel is a play by C.L.R. James that opened in London in 1936 with Paul Robeson in the title role. For the first time, black actors appeared on the British stage in a work by a black playwright. In this conversation we talk to Sakina Karimjee and Nic Watts who adapted James' play into graphic novel form and illustrated it. We talk about how C.L.R. James dramatized the Haitian Revolution and its various contradictions and characters and how they sought to tell this story through a graphic novel, using James' script. Along the way we talk about many aspects of the revolution, about the story's protagonist Toussaint Louverture, about the relentless imperialist pursuit of Haiti, which was ongoing throughout the revolutionary period and continues into the present day. And we also discuss why the Haitian revolution is so suppressed in popular culture and popular representations of history, despite being one of the single most important events in world history. The book will be out on October 10th from Verso Books, but in the meantime you can pre-order it wherever you buy books. This is the second episode in a four part series focused upon the life of Toussaint Louverture. Few know the man's history despite the fact that the Haitian led the only successful slave rebellion in history. For comparison sake, we will begin the episode with a lengthy retelling of Nat Turner's rebellion. From there we will look at the beginning of the 1791 northern province revolt before then critically examining Louverture's role in starting the conflict as well as his leadership of the movement. Midway through the conflict our freedom fighter switches his allegiance to Spain before finally settling back in with the French. It was only after this second shift that the leader of the only successful slave revolt in history became an abolitionist. This is the first episode in a four part series focused upon the life of Toussaint Louverture. Few know the man's history despite the fact that the Haitian led the only successful slave rebellion in history. For comparison sake, we will begin the episode with a lengthy retelling of Spartacus, the most famous of all slave revolts. From there we will detail the discovery and colonization of Haiti by the European powers and the role that sugar played within the decision to import massive amounts of African slaves to the Caribbean. We'll look at Toussaint's family as well as the role that the religions of Catholicism and Voodoo played within his early life. Titres joués, extraits de l'album d'Afriquatuors - Ballaké, chant Sekouba Bambino - Stabat Mater, chant Tina Kloutse - Suite Lettre 1, chant Ballou Canta, Sam Mangwana - Amour Madidina, chant Ballou Canta.

From 1797 to 1801, during the Haitian Revolution, President John Adams and Toussaint Louverture forged diplomatic relations that empowered white Americans to embrace freedom and independence for people of color in Saint-Domingue. The United States supported the Dominguan revolutionaries with economic assistance and arms and munitions; the conflict was also the U.S. Navy's first military action on behalf of a foreign ally. This cross-cultural cooperation was of immense and strategic importance as it helped to bring forth a new nation: Haiti. Diplomacy in Black and White is the first book on the Adams-Louverture alliance. Historian and former diplomat Ronald Angelo Johnson details the aspirations of the Americans and Dominguans―two revolutionary peoples―and how they played significant roles in a hostile Atlantic world. Remarkably, leaders of both governments established multiracial relationships amid environments dominated by slavery and racial hierarchy. And though U.S.-Dominguan diplomacy did not end slavery in the United States, it altered Atlantic world discussions of slavery and race well into the twentieth century. Diplomacy in Black and White reflects the capacity of leaders from disparate backgrounds to negotiate political and societal constraints to make lives better for the groups they represent. Adams and Louverture brought their peoples to the threshold of a lasting transracial relationship. And their shared history reveals the impact of decisions made by powerful people at pivotal moments. But in the end, a permanent alliance failed to emerge, and instead, the two republics born of revolution took divergent paths. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/negmawonpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/negmawonpodcast/support

Tu as encore tellement de vérités à découvrir.
