In the September episode of A Garden Runs Through It, hosted by Cynthia White from the UC Master Gardener program of Colusa County, the focus is on dealing with heatwave damage in the garden and the tasks to prepare for fall. Cynthia emphasizes pulling out summer plants that have been burned by the heat and planting new crops for the cooler months. She shares advice from Don Shore, explaining how extreme heat can prevent vegetables like tomatoes and beans from setting fruit, and offers solutions like providing shade to protect plants.Cynthia also discusses the importance of proper irrigation, especially during heatwaves, sharing her personal story about losing avocado fruit due to a failed watering system. She recommends using drip irrigation and other deep watering techniques, such as filling five-gallon buckets with small holes to keep water oozing out slowly around plants and trees. For gardeners planning ahead, Cynthia suggests planting late-summer crops like squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes, which can still produce well into fall. She highlights heat-tolerant plants like zinnias, salvias, and cosmos for continued garden color, as well as vegetables like beets and swiss chard for planting in September. The episode concludes with reminders to monitor irrigation systems, water deeply, and plan for next year's garden. Gardening tips and event information can be found on the Master Gardeners of Colusa County's website and social media pages.Do you have a question for the Master Gardeners, email karbarrera@ucanr.edu; be sure to include "GARDEN PODCAST" in the subject line to have your question considered to be answered on the show. For more information about the UC Master Gardeners of Colusa County, click here To sign up for the UC Master Gardener's of Colusa County Newsletter, click here"Like" the UC Master Gardeners of Colusa County on Facebook.Want to give to the UC Master Gardner's of Colusa County? Julie Murphy interviews award winning poets Ellen Bass and Cynthia White about their poems and the work of Jericho Brown and Paul Tran included in the new gender-inclusive anthology Grabbed: Poets and Writers on Sexual Assault, Empowerment and Healing. Please join us as we read stunning poems and engage in a lively discussion of the power of poetry, how to write about difficult subjects, art and healing, and more. From the Grabbed website: "The editors asked writers and poets to add to the conversation about what being “grabbed” means to them in their own experience or in whatever way the word “grabbed” inspired them. What they received are often searing, heart-rending works, ranging in topic from sexual misconduct to racial injustice, from an unwanted caress to rape, expressed in powerful, beautifully crafted prose and poetry. This book is for everyone who has ever felt alone in their experience of being grabbed, violated, overlooked, and silenced. This anthology is their voice. It is their war cry. It is their plea to be heard and be seen. We want this volume to provide hope to those who have yet to harness the power of their own story. Years in the making, the stitching together of this important narrative chronicles a moment in time which is, unfortunately, also timeless." Making new treatments often starts by finding out just what building blocks you have. But what if you could use the blocks with whole new sets? What if you could see how the blocks changed between owners? What about making your own brand new blocks? When fighting bacteria, we need every tool we can get. This week we find out about some great ways to take the fight back to bacteria in new and interesting ways from artificial cells, or new combinations of treatments, even to tracking the way bacteria changes over aeons.
