When 80-year-old Donald Finch was found dead in his Montana motor home, it looked at first like an elderly man had simply died in his sleep. But an autopsy told a different story—and soon, investigators uncovered texts, forged checks, and a trail of money that pointed to betrayal from the very people he trusted most.Today my co-hosts tell you the case of Donald Finch—a grandfather who lost his savings to scams, moved closer to family for safety, and instead found himself trapped in a web of greed that ended in homicide.**************************************Do you have thoughts about this case, or is there a specific true crime case you'd like to hear about? This past spring, host Mike Jordan Laskey traveled to New York for a Jesuit Media Lab theatre event. He was coordinating the outing with our JML contributor Renee Roden, who lives at a Catholic Worker house in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Catholic Worker, of course, is the movement founded in 1933 by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, which grew from a newspaper dedicated to Catholic social teaching and pacifism to a network of houses of hospitality in urban areas and farm communes in rural areas. Renee and Mike had some time before the event that evening, so they visited Maryhouse, a house of hospitality the movement opened in 1975 and where Dorothy Day spent the last five years of her life. It's a pilgrimage site of American Catholicism. And unlike many other pilgrimage sites, Maryhouse isn't a museum – it's still a vibrant and active Catholic Worker house of hospitality to this day. By a great stroke of luck, Dorothy Day's granddaughter Martha Hennessy was in town and could give Renee and Mike a tour of the house. Martha was the seventh child born to David Hennessy and Tamar Day Hennessy, who was Dorothy's only daughter. Martha spends most of the year on a farm in Vermont, but she frequently travels to New York to live and work at Maryhouse. Martha has carried on the Catholic Worker tradition in her own life, including participation in anti-nuclear protests with the Plowshares movement. As Martha showed Renee and Mike around Maryhouse, she spoke of her grandmother with such admiration and love, almost as if Dorothy herself were in the room. Mike invited Martha on the podcast to share stories from her life and reflections on how the Catholic Worker continues its work of mercy and justice today. We know you'll love getting to know this incredibly special person who has carried on her family legacy with so much devotion and passion. Karah Perkins-Potter Shooting – The Clay Edwards Show, Episode 1,010 I'm gutted to share the tragic news of Karah Perkins-Potter's death, a 23-year-old woman shot and killed at a Fast Fuel gas station on Northside Drive in Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday morning, June 22, 2025. As the granddaughter of a local civil rights activist, Karah's loss hits deep. According to her family, she was trying to protect a friend from an alleged domestic violence situation when the friend's boyfriend, Phillip Bullock, showed up. I'm told Karah stepped in, urging her friend to leave with her instead of the boyfriend, who reportedly grew enraged. A tussle followed, and Bullock allegedly shot Karah in the head, killing her. This senseless act infuriates me—what kind of weak man shoots a young woman trying to help someone? I see it as pure culture rot, a failure to control emotions that's tearing at Jackson's soul. Karah was intelligent, selfless, and had a bright future, checking all the same boxes as a young lady I interviewed just a day before, who I prayed would avoid this exact kind of violence. Capitol Police have made an arrest, and Bullock, who lives two doors down from Karah, is out on bail, which her family finds outrageous. I'm skeptical of the “civil rights leader” label thrown around—nobody's civil rights are in jeopardy in 2025 except maybe conservative straight men—but that doesn't diminish the tragedy. My heart goes out to Karah's parents, Joni and her father, who are reeling from this loss. I'm calling for the community to reflect and address the violence within, as it's always the same folks causing the pain.

This episode was recorded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, during the 2025 Tri-State Dairy Conference. Dr. Laporta gives an overview of her presentation, focusing on the impact of heat stress during the dry period on the cow, her daughters and her granddaughters. She covers heat stress impacts on mammary gland involution, as well as fetal programming effects on the daughter and granddaughter. (3:37)Daughters of heat-stressed cows have fewer sweat glands located deeper in the skin, thicker skin and more sebaceous glands. This was observed at birth, weaning and puberty. They sweat more than heifers who weren't heat stressed in utero, but have higher rectal temperatures during the preweaning phase. Dr. Laporta hypothesizes that if those calves were exposed to additional stress, they would be more susceptible to illness because of the higher core temperature. (6:34)The panel discusses heat stress impacts on male fetuses and the potential for epigenetic changes to be transmitted through semen. Dr. Gerloff asks about differences in the impacts of heat stress on first-calf heifers compared to older cows. Dr. Laporta describes the survival rates of heifers who were heat-stressed in utero. Heifers are lost from the herd even before first calving, with more following in first and second lactation. (11:00)Dr. Laporta outlines the differences between heat-stressed and cooled treatments in her experiments. They measure respiration rates and rectal temperatures to assess the physiological impacts of heat stress in the cows. Scott asks how long the heat stress period needs to be in order to observe negative effects. Dr. Gerloff asks about calf mortality rates between the two groups. Dr. Laporta estimates a 12% death loss in the heat stress groups, who seem to be more susceptible to the usual calf illnesses. It appears that gut closure might occur earlier in heat-stressed calves - maybe even before birth, which does not bode well for their immune systems. (16:49)Dr. Laporta details how heat stress impacts mammary gland involution. Early in the dry period, you want a spike in cell death to build new cells for the next lactation. In heat-stressed cows, the spike in cell death early in the dry period is diminished, not allowing those cells to die. This results in less proliferation of the mammary gland, and the cow starts her next lactation with older cells that weren't renewed in full. Thus, producing less milk. Dr. Gerloff shares some of his experiences with heat stress in his area of Illinois. (22:17)Heat stress has negative impacts on other organs as well. Heifers who experienced heat stress in utero are born with larger adrenal glands with altered microstructure. Dr. Laporta describes some of the DNA methylation that has been observed in these heifers. The panel discusses whether the response would be similar for other types of stressors, like cold stress or social stress. (26:19)What can we do to mitigate these impacts? Cooling dry cows so they can thermoregulate during gestation is critical. Altering diets to account for heat stress is also an important strategy. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet to “fix” cows who were exposed to heat stress in utero, but these negative implications can be prevented. Dr. Laporta has also focused on what she calls perinatal programming - after the calf is born, what can we do? She has been working to develop cooling mechanisms for calves and is interested in further investigating early life mammary development. (33:41)When a dry cow experiences heat stress, she has fewer and smaller alveoli. Daughters of those cows have smaller udders with altered tissue growth. Granddaughters of those cows have fewer estrogen receptors in their udders and negative impacts on mammary proliferation. (44:30)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. (47:52)Scott invites the audience to Bourbon and Brainiacs at ADSA in Louisville - a bourbon tasting with all your favorite professors! Indigenous Christians in Uzbekistan have a heart to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to other nations. Praise God! However, many are unable to support these missionary efforts themselves. Is it just because they are live in a less affluent region? Or is there something more at play?Local churches across the globe need to be self-propagating, self-governing and self-supporting. This last feature is often poorly developed or overlooked. James Cha, former missionary and Christian leader, joins theChristian Emergency Podcast to unpack what this means for the Church. The Nevius Method is a missionary approach that emphasizes these three themes, in addition to healthy theology. The method is based off the approach used by John Livingstone Nevius, a missionary to China in the 19th Century. His method made a big impact on how Christianswere discipled in China and Korea.James suggests that this simple approach, rooted in simple obedience, would improve the health and strength of many local churches today. This is true of churches in Central Asia, Africa and even the West. Join noted author, historian, and actor Nikita Breznikov as he teams up with Monte & The Pharaoh Mainstay Benny “The One and Only Playa” Scala for another very special episode of “When It Was Real." Each week, Nikita and Benny delve into the sacred history of the WWWF/WWF in the 1970's. This week, we welcome Melodie Perras to our show. Melodie is the granddaughter of professional wrestling legend and recent WWE Hall of Famer Ivan Koloff. Koloff scored what many argue is the most significant victory in the history of professional wrestling, cleanly pinning WWWF Champion Bruno Sammartino at Madison Square Garden on January 18, 1971, ending Sammartino's historic near 8 year reign. Nikita, Melodie, and Benny will discuss both Ivan Koloff, despised and feared wrestling heel, as well as Oreal Perras, beloved grandfather. Take a ride in the Wrestling Wayback Machine to one of the greatest eras in the history of wrestling. Benny and Nikita, your Co-Pilots, promise you a safe trip and a guaranteed nostalgia overload! #whenitwasreal #ivankoloff #nikitabreznikov #january181971

On 19th February 1567, while imprisoned in the Tower of London, Lady Margaret Douglas received devastating news—her son, Lord Darnley, had been brutally murdered at Kirk o' Field. But this was more than just the loss of a son—it shattered her dynastic hopes, leaving her a grieving mother caught in the deadly game of Tudor and Stuart politics. - Granddaughter of Henry VII, Margaret was born into royalty but repeatedly fell foul of the crown—not through open ambition, but by defying royal authority and making decisions without permission. - She supported her son's marriage to Mary, Queen of Scots, without Elizabeth I's blessing—only for him to be murdered in mysterious circumstances less than two years later. - Her relentless pursuit of justice helped turn English and Scottish opinion against Mary, Queen of Scots. - But Margaret's independent choices landed her in the Tower multiple times, including for arranging another unauthorised marriage—this time for her surviving son, Charles. Despite losing her husband, both sons, and her own freedom, Margaret's bloodline ultimately prevailed. Her grandson, James VI of Scotland, became James I of England in 1603, uniting the crowns and shaping the monarchy as we know it today. Margaret Douglas never ruled, but her defiance left a lasting mark on history. Listen now to uncover her extraordinary story! #MargaretDouglas #TudorHistory #RoyalIntrigue #OnThisDay #HistoryMatters #BritishMonarchy
Dr Deena Wasserman grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a rabbi, but actually, also the great, great granddaughter of another rabbi – quite a famous rabbi. For Deena, Aliyah was always on the radar screen, but the question was: When and How? Layer on top of it the question of making Aliyah as a physician, and the path to returning home was anything but obvious, even if the idea of returning was crystal clear.

Our first female heroine candidate earned every last little ounce of the legend surrounding her life.

Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss an exceptional audiobook from Bernhard Schlink. Both Richard Burnip and Sarah Moule are fine narrators who perform with an impeccable tempo, pace, and cadence. The mysterious plot concerns a Berlin bookseller, Kaspar, who engineered his wife Birgit's escape from East Germany 40 years earlier. After her death, Kaspar finds her memoir, which reveals she had given birth to a daughter. His relationship with his ultra-nationalist granddaughter occupies much of the second half of the story. Schlink masterfully reveals the complexity of a reunified Germany. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
I literally said this 4 years ago about the 68 million #RepubliKKKans and their cronies. But yet they literally bought 20 million more of their hooded delusional, #GetOut victims to the 2024 election. Ya'll indicated, it is ok to ignore the lies, the deaths, and women like me. You don't have a right to live, survive, and thrive. DO NOT FIX YOUR MOUTH TO ASK ME TO BUY, SUPPORT, MARCH, WORK FOR YOU. Don't. Try. Me. I expected the majority to support the truth and inclusion. I proudly displayed my #Voted sticker. Now, I am embarrassed because I have a #MAGAMaggot neighbor and definitely don't feel safe in my deflating Blue Bubble and my #woke organization still rife with microaggressions. I expected more from you, but you let me down. Now I am that woman scorned...So with clarity, to Hamilton County, the rest of TN, GA, NC, PA, you racist conservative knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathers... I am giving you... Am I pissed, yep. The obstacles are forward-facing; I just have to get healthier to jump over them or create my own trail.
