Sorry for the unexpected disruption in the schedule. I do have some upcoming exciting changes for the podcast, but needed a little break to get everything together for you. I am moving release dates to Wednesday, and Through the Vortex will return on September 6th for the remainder of Season 4! We have some exciting serials to cover every other week, and I also will be doing biweekly discussions on topics related to the previous serial but that may encompass the larger era/Classic Who ideas on the off weeks. I really do appreciate everyone who has tuned in for this show, and I apologize for my periodic burnout. It is my hope that from here on out I schedule breaks to make sure this doesn't happen in the future and I can provide higher quality content. Through the Vortex is a passion project,  and I adore getting to make these podcasts and the am always quietly astonished people want to listen to me talk about my favorite show:-) Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. They are saved by the scientist Zaroff, but it quickly becomes clear his plans for Atlantis will be earthshattering.A serial that has a lot of potential it never quite realizes, but still an entertaining ride with some great moments and ideas.  ZAROFF: Bang! Bang! Bang, bang! That's all.DOCTOR: Yes. Just one small question. Why do you want to blow up the world?ZAROFF: Why? You, a scientist, ask me why? The achievement, my dear Doctor. The destruction of the world. It was temples and priests and superstition that made us follow Zaroff in the first place. When the water's found it's own level, the temple will be buried forever. We shall never return to it. After the Battle of Cullouden, the Scottish Highlanders who fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie are desperately seeking safety as the English brutally butcher the "traitors." When the Doctor, Ben, and Polly meet up with Jamie McCrimmon and his "Laird," they soon find themselves attempting to escape the English redcoats trying to hang them or sell them into indentured servitude. One of the funniest of the historicals, the Second Doctor impersonates a German doctor (with a terrible accent) and a Granny while tricking would-be slave traders. Polly blackmails a soldier. Even Ben gets to play "Houdini." Note: I do give a bit of an overview of the history that led to the Battle of Cullouden. If you are already familiar, you can skip over to 28:22 where I hop into the serial itself.Obviously this historical overview is broad strokes; there are a lot of complicated situations that led up to the Jacobite uprisings--this is a simplistic overview.POLLY: What about Jamie? We can't leave him here.DOCTOR: True. His ship's sailed.POLLY: What will you do?JAMIE: Oh, I'll be all right. They won't catch me.BEN: Did you hear that! They'll catch us all if we don't move fast.POLLY: Doctor, can we take him with us?DOCTOR: If he teaches me to play the bagpipes.Upcoming:"The Underwater Menace"Episodes 1 & 4 are missing. We've made it through Doctor Who's third season, AKA the season where the show transitioned into the form it would retain for the next 60 years. The Doctor is our wise hero accompanied by a plucky companion providing the human element. It's an uneven season--some of the best serials the show has ever done and...really no bad serials but some that are very unmemorable. We'll discuss the season overall: the behind-the-scenes chaos, its thematic threads, what it introduces into the Doctor Who formula, the good, the great, and the ugly.  NOTE: In the round-up of  which serials to watch, for some reason I forgot to discuss The Dalek's Masterplan. Possibly because it's hard to say whether to struggle through the reconstruction or not. It is easy to follow with the audio and stills. It genuinely is a great serial with great characters, a complicated but interesting story, a lot of commentary....but it is LONG (12 episodes), and it probably only needed to be 6 episodes. If you listen to the three-part podcast on that one, I mention you can basically watch the beginning and the end and leave out the middle strange side quest (even though that means missing the Monk, and who would want to miss the Monk?). Basically, watching still and audio for 5 hours is an investment. But if you want to make that investment, it is a rewarding story. Maybe someone has put out a condensed version somewhere? If not, at the very least check out the last episode--it is the bleakest ending the show has ever permitted.  NEXT TIME:Serial #28: The Smugglers4 episodes, all missing:-(Pirates looking for buried treasure? Taking a moment to celebrate one of Classic Who's most underrated gems: Steven Taylor!  The man who escaped a Mechanoid City and nearly died for a teddy bear who goes on to become a leader uniting Elders and Savages. Noble, headstrong, a tad  immature, and a more than a bit silly, Steven deserves more love y'all.Steven is arguably the Companion to the First Doctor who goes through the most--and he changes the most because of that experience! Our first companion to a "hero" Doctor, he is the first to be the "right-hand man" and friend to the Doctor, the first companion to embody the role we generally see companions play going forward.NOTE for Clarity: I mention that Steven struggles with empathy...I think a better way of putting this would be he intellectually struggles with "perspective-taking." He deeply cares about people and has great sympathy for their suffering, but he struggles to understand when others see the world differently from him (which leads to him sometimes being a bit pig-headed/stubborn). I think the First Doctor actually has almost the opposite problem wherein he struggles to emotionally feel/connect to others but learns (mostly from Ian/Barbara) to understand multiple perspectives and ways of seeing the world.  In the most simplistic terms: Steven is all HEART, and the Doctor is all HEAD. Enjoy!NOTE: All three parts of this review were recorded the day after watching "The Power of the Doctor" in pretty much one take (I know!). But the last ten minutes of this episode I felt the need to return, briefly, to the review. Given some time and space, I needed to defend Yaz a bit more. I think she's pretty brilliant in this special. Period. I even buy her and the Doctor together in the isolation of this one episode. Yeah, they do that good a job with these final moments. A big thank you to Hannah for listening to me as I fully processed this episode! For what it's worth, this special ultimately softened me considerably to  the last three seasons and I am (tentatively) excited to see what they do with the 60th anniversary. As is often the case with Doctor Who, it is possible my feelings on this entire era of the show will change drastically given more time and space. This was a mistake; she is actually on for 2 seasons plus one episode (she enters in "Dragonfire" in Season 24  and is the companion for Seasons 25 and 26). Because Seasons 25 & 26 are shorter than other seasons on Classic Who, I often put them together in my brain. I still stand by Season 26 being pretty fantastic! Season 25 is great too--just a little more bonkers. The Seventh Doctor's first season (24) is written as if we are still in the Sixth Doctor's (insane) era and his second season (25) is when the show starts to find its footing for this very different Doctor. The Doctor is suddenly invisible in the TARDIS! Soon Team TARDIS discovers it has landed in the domain of the Celestial Toymaker. An eternal being with near infinite powers, the Toymaker traps others in his realm to play games (he's very bored). Now, the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo must win--or they will be trapped forever as the Toymaker's playthings. _____DOCTOR: You need me?TOYMAKER: Yes. I'm bored. I love to play games, but there's no one to play against. The beings who call here have no minds and so they become my toys. But you will become my perpetual opponent. We shall play endless games together, your brain against mine.DOCTOR: As you said, if I win the game, I can go.TOYMAKER: So you can, Doctor, so you can. But I think you will lose. _________DODO: I wonder if we'll ever see the sergeant and the cook again? They were rather funny, you know.STEVEN: Look, you still believe in these creations of the Toymaker, don't you? You can't see that they're just phantoms, things created in his mind.DODO: If that's so, why do they lose to us? And always through doing something silly and human?STEVEN: Oh, I don't know. Maybe they get out of his control.DODO: There, that's just what I meant.STEVEN: What are you talking about?DODO: Look, he can bring them to life, but they have wills and minds of their own. I'll never be able to look at a doll or a playing card again with an easy mind. They really do have a secret life of their own.___________DODO: We'll never see him again, will we, Doctor?DOCTOR: Oh, my dear, don't talk too soon. The mind is indestructible. So is the Toymaker.STEVEN: What, you mean he can never be destroyed?DODO: But you defeated him.DOCTOR: Yes, just at this moment, but there will be other meetings in an other time.DODO: Then your battle with him will never end.DOCTOR: Yes, you're quite right, my dear, but anyway, let us cheer up. I've tried so hard to get on board with Timeless Child....I really have indeed. But unfortunately, I have some issues...In this podcast, I touch on what I think fails the Timeless Child storyline both in execution and in the fundamental ideas. I also speculate what will be done with the story going forward.NOTE: I didn't discuss this in the episode but think I do allude to it: I actually don't have too many issues with canon being reframed/rewritten--mostly because Classic Who does this all the time. I do think that New Who has made this more difficult to do, however, and is better about canon continuity (until Chibnail's time). I may return to this in its own episode someday.  I may also return to Timeless Child to directly discuss it in relation to the Cartmel Master Plan--which was a direction that the show was considering going in the 7th Doctor era before it was cancelled. I thought discussing that would be a big can of worms in this episode but do think the Master Plan and Timeless Child bear a lot of similarities and should be compared (especially given I oddly have fewer problems with the Cartmel plan?)  Upcoming:Serial #21, Part I: The Dalek's Master Plan(Episodes: "1: The Nightmare Begins, " "2: Day of Armageddon,""3: Devil's Planet," "4: The Traitors," "5: Counter Plot," "6: Coronas of the Sun")NOTE: Episodes 2 & 5 can be watched in their entirety. Ian & Barbara are our first companions, our original audience surrogates, and such a large part of Doctor Who that it would have been difficult to see the production continuing without them. Their loss ushers in a new era and signals the end of Part I of Hartnell's time as the Doctor. The Doctor, and the show, is never quite the same. In a very real way, these two companions are never "replaced" in function--rather the Doctor absorbs their roles. Let's take a moment to celebrate these two companions who perhaps taught the Doctor more than any of the others--compassion and courage that comes from empathy towards others and the moral wherewithal to feel obligated to help.  The Doctor as we know him would not be the Doctor without his first two human friends.____NEXT TIME:For Classic Who: The Time Meddler (Episodes: "The Watcher," "The Meddling Monk," "A Battle of Wits," "Checkmate")--Monday, January 31stSpecial thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. Bring on the bonkers' insanity of Doctor Who's  "The Chase!" A serial that can only be fully appreciated if you just go with it. But seriously--how can you not love this one? Mostly commentary (because this one doesn't want me to analyze).  The Daleks have built a time machine that can lock on to the TARDIS. Now, the Doctor and companions are being chased through space and time, ending up on futuristic worlds, atop the Empire State Building, meeting Dracula, and encountering all sorts of monsters along the way.DALEK: The Dalek Supreme has ordered they are to be pursued through all Eternity. The one where Doctor Who finally asks, "can we change the future?" And there's a museum....in Space! Like a "Space Museum?" Commentary and analysis.Team TARDIS arrives at a planet where they seem to be invisible and incapable of touching anything. Then, our Fearsome Foursome sees themselves as future exhibitions at a museum! Realizing they have skipped a time track and had a glimpse into the future, the Doctor, Vicki, Ian, and Barbara "arrive" at the museum where they are now visible to their future captors, the Moroks. Now, all four must attempt to prevent the future they have already glimpsed....DOCTOR: All we have to do is to wait here until we arrive.BARBARA: I beg your pardon?DOCTOR: You see, my dear, before they actually put us in those glass cases, we must have arrived here sometime in the Tardis. These people saw us and thought we were worthy people to be put in their Space Museum--BARBARA: I see! I think.DOCTOR: But nothing has happened to us yet. What we are doing now is taking a glimpse into the future, or what might be or could be the future. All that leads up to it, is still yet to come._____BARBARA: But Doctor, what can we do now?DOCTOR: My dear Barbara, you must try and remember, the short time we've been on this planet, we've met people, spoken to them and who knows, we might have even influenced them.VICKI: That's what I was trying to say, Doctor.DOCTOR: Yes, I knew you were, child, yes. Yes, I knew you were.IAN: You mean we don't necessarily have to change our own future. It could be changed for us.DOCTOR: Quite so, yes, quite so, my boy.NEXT TIME:For Classic Who: The Chase (Episodes: "The Executioners," "The Death of Time," "Flight Through Eternity," "Journey into Terror," "The Death of Doctor Who," "The Planet of Decision")--Monday, January 10thFor New Who: Review of "Eve of the Daleks"-- January 5thHannah & Brianna Talk Doctor Who: The Flux--January 10thSpecial thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. The one where everyone decided they were in a Shakespearean Historical Tragedy....and El-Alkir is hated by everyone ever. Commentary and analysis for Doctor Who partially missing serial's  "The Crusade!"The Third Crusade has wearied both Richard the Lionheart and the Sultan Saladin who both seek peace--possibly by marrying Richard's sister Joanna to Saladin's brother Saphadin. Into the middle of this turbulent conflict arrives Team TARDIS. When Barbara is kidnapped by the wicked El-Alkir, Sir Ian of Jaffar tries to rescue her (badly) while the Doctor and Vicki navigate the intrigues of Richard's court. JOANNA (to the Doctor): There's something new in you, yet something older than the sky itself. I sense that I can trust you.DOCTOR: You stupid butcher! Can you think of nothing else but killing, hmm?LEICESTER: You're a man for talk, I can see that. You like a table and a ring of men. A parley here, arrangements there, but when you men of eloquence have stunned each other with your words, we, we the soldiers, have to face it out. On some half-started morning while you speakers lie abed, armies settle everything, giving sweat, sinewed bodies, aye, and life itself.DOCTOR: I admire bravery and loyalty, sir.
