A Study Series in Proverbs- Wisdom's Worth- Living Well, Good, Godly - Practical, Ethical, Theological
This week Timothy R. Clark interviews Kenny Luck founder of Every Man Ministries and ECPA platinum award winning author of 24 books. Together they discuss connecting in a post-pandemic virtual world and the importance of getting your relationships right. Here are a few takeaways from this episode:Human beings are created and engineered to be known.People want to bring their whole selves to their work. They don't want to bring parts of themselves. No one likes to live compartmentalize because human beings are created and engineered to be known. If we're forced to hide parts of ourselves, you're not getting the full capacity and potential of a person.Ask the second question.Connecting with someone requires that you ask "the second question". It's not about "how are you doing today" it's about "how are you really doing today". Get to know your team members and find out what their passions are. In many companies, there's an intersection between the passions of employees and their employer. We all need connection.90% of the people that you meet are wrestling with some big challenge. When you just ask a simple question that you're thinking inside that applies to everyone, and you say it out loud, you discover that there is this reservoir of willingness to engage. We all need to connect with each other. The pandemic has give the world a shared traumatic experience and opened us up to connect. "Be a golden ruler."There are certain principles that transcend what's right, and to transcend bias effectively, you have to serve another person without expectation of reciprocity. When you can wade past all of the noise and past all of the cultural movements and see a human beings as they are you will recognize many opportunities to serve.Authentic over SyntheticPeople want authentic experiences and they want to be their authentic selves. The distinction is between authentic and synthetic, between the real thing and a knockoff of it. Being synthetic is safe but it's not fulfilling or satisfying. Being authentic is vulnerable but the rewards are great if we can get past our fear of being known. In this episode, I interview Gavin Hodgins, the CEO at FloatPac Pty Ltd, a company that offers technologies to a diverse range of pioneering ideas and products across air, land, and sea. The company was founded in 1982 and the founders were making lift bags for the Australian army, pioneering high-frequency welding. Gavin started out in the company in 2002 as a welder aged 22 and is now the group CEO. They are the Mercedes Benz of fish air transport, the only company in the world with a product to transport fish with oxygen (FishPac). They also have other products like Flexitank Australia fish farm liners, pillow tanks, bladders, inflatable marker buoys, and lift bags, and RainPac under house rainwater bladder tanks, and in 2015 they launched a floating solar business (FloatPac) When Covid hit, to be able to keep all their team members, they pivoted to producing face masks while fish transport stopped overnight. Demand was so high that they had to add 50 more team members. People on their website at any one time grew from 500 to 100,000 after being featured on two news channels. Their full-time employees grew from 2 to 65, and are now down to 12 after changing strategic focus and giving their manufacturing to a partner in Queensland so they can focus on their strength; marketing. Their profit growth has been 5 to 7% year on year, and they have funded their business purely from profits and a few research grants. Gavin felt he had succeeded when they got through Covid with a massive pivot and he feels that the hardest thing about growing a small business is intestinal fortitude. The one thing he says he would tell himself on day one of starting out in business is, “Build your website and spend the first eight weeks so you don’t need to touch it for a while after that” There’s a lot to learn from Gavin’s awesome business ownership story, so don’t miss this episode. This Cast Covers: Starting out as a plastics business (lift bags) and diversifying into revolutionary products that have seen the business thrive since 1982. Joining the company as a welder and moving up the ladder to become CEO. Diving into the huge solar (Renewable energy) market in Australia with a brilliant product. Making water transporter liners for the billion-dollar Salmon industry while focusing mainly on the coral trade industry. Facilitating an environmentally friendly way of shipping through their products. How they went into the manufacturing of reusable face masks when Covid-19 hit. The seven seconds of fame that had traffic to their website blowing up so much that they had to get a dedicated server to keep it from crashing. Maintaining a strong position all through the Covid-19 recession brought about the pandemic. How going into a joint venture with a manufacturing business has enabled them to grow their business by focusing all their efforts on marketing. Reducing their workforce from 65 to 12 and helping their outgoing employees find other jobs. Navigating through the loss of their revenue streams within 24 hours to pivot and succeed. Discovering the effectiveness of email marketing and the huge return on investment they get from it. Funding their business with a combination of profit reinvestment and R&D grants/refunds. Running a strict line of credit, only dealing with clients who pay deposits and are excellent payers, and how that has helped them build great relationships. How diversification ensures their continuous ability to keep the business running sustainably. People who do their job well versus people who are invested in their job. Learning and enjoying sales before building his skills in marketing. Why employing people is what he loves most about growing a small business. How he has been able to get rid of impostor syndrome while also knowing where his place is. Finding out that potential employees may look good on paper but not be the best candidate. Building a great company culture by buying everybody coffee every day. Having a hard time achieving some work-life balance but making sure he doesn’t work weekends. His fascination with reading the biographies of big business people like Richard Branson and Bill Gates. Why they moved away from using MailChimp and settled on ActiveCampaign. Where have all the caring men gone? Kenny Luck addresses why today's men are settling for mediocrity. He shares how his new book "Dangerous Good" calls men out of today's culture back into God to live out Spirit-empowered masculinity. It's time for men to step into their true identity in God.
What You'll Hear: Kenny was the last of 7 children. His Dad was in the military and was like a ghost Kenny felt ignored and was on a broken quest for recognition and visibility By age 17 Kenny made a lot of money and had friends but was very empty. He came home from a party and prayed a prayer of desperation and said to Jesus "I need to see you", he felt an incredible presence in his mind and heart of acceptance and had a burning bush moment. 2 months later he went to UCLA, started attending a Bible study and never looked back That kind of encounter is available to all believers In College he got involved in Campus Crusade for Christ and had great men discipling me. He joined the staff at Campus Crusade for Christ working with Josh McDowell, then went into the marketplace and ended up CEO of a company while attending Saddleback Church and then became a lay pastor He was Men's pastor at Saddleback from 2000-2014 We need to trust God with timing of job changes, He doesn't wear our watch If a man wants to go into full-time ministry, often he thinks falsely it will be easier and he'll feel better in ministry vs a position in the marketplace We need to look in the mirror and check ourselves and get counsel Your life in God will never outperform your view of God God has you here for a purpose. Your first purpose at work is to be productive. A big mistake is when a Christian's work product doesn't reflect the God they want to talk about The best employees are the ones who act like an owner. They care as much about the company as those who founded it. God is then pleased and management is pleased. The Gospel in deed makes a path for you to share the Gospel in word We are in a spiritual battle when it comes to our marriage and there are forces against our marriage Our marriage needs to be protected and defended by two people Kenny wrote his book "Dangerous Good" because men want to do great things and be dangerous with goodness like a superhero. After realizing they can't be a superhero they try be dangerous in bad ways, the rip-off version of an identify for men Jesus broke the rules for the male culture of His time Well tell the stories when we take risk The life we think is risky, such as with sex or money or doing unethical things, these types of risk make a man selfish and horrible at relationships. Jesus said to take risks on loving Him and loving people, and then our lives will be filled with purpose and meaning Jesus said He came so we would have life and to the full We're made by God, we're made for God, and we're going back to God. If we get those 3 things we're going to be living a full life The truest thing about you is what God says is true about you Say Yes to a relationship with God and yes to a relationship with other believers, God will take you the rest of the way We can have a revolution of identity as a child of the King and then a revolution of being a shining light of men who are dangerous with goodness as in the book of Acts When God wants to do something big He starts with the men The church has the women and kids around the world. It's waiting on the men. The end is near and there's an urgency we need to live with Don't miss your moment in history go to www.EveryManMinistries.com

Kenny Luck RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif.,April, 2018 –Kenny Luck throws down the gauntlet to a generation of men who have become comfortable with a culturally safe Christian faith in his new book, “Dangerous Good: The Coming Revolution of Men Who Care”(July 3, 2018, NavPress, $15.99, ISBN 978-1-63146-890-2). “Too often men suffer from a malaise that leads them to settle for mediocrity, play it safe and blend into our broken culture,” Luck, founder of Every Man Ministries, said. “But deep inside every man is the impulse to confront the evil around him, to embrace the ‘dangerous good' that comes with being a committed follower of Christ. I want this book to awaken the sleeping giant within the community of men that will be an aggressive force for good.” Throughout the book, Luck explains how Jesus was considered radical in his time and the perfect model for the dangerous good man who is not defined by his feelings, circumstances, material possessions, successes or failures. Instead, this man is defined by God and God alone. Jesus consorted with social outcasts like lepers, tax collectors, and prostitutes. And He not only overturned the moneychangers' tables in the temple, He flouted every kind of social and religious convention. “Dangerous good behavior is Spirit-empowered behavior that is counter-intuitive to a watching world,” Luck writes in the book. “It's show-stopping: Just when they expect you to do the self-protective thing, you do a Spirit-filled thing out of love for God and people. You take the road less traveled, and the tension inside of you releases itself into faithfulness to Christ for the sake of another.” Using examples from his personal life and the Bible, Luck provides men with the tools to be who God has called them to be and put an end to today's gender wars, as seen through the relationship between Barak and Deborah in the Book of Judges. Together they led Israel to victory against the Canaanites. Barak set an example that is still worth following today. “Smart men honor, dignify and partner with great women to achieve far more than they ever would by themselves,” Luck writes. “My prayer is that this book helps men to realize that we need to stop sitting on the sidelines because the fact is it's the opposite of who we are,” Luck said. “We were called to be an active fighter in the battle between good and evil. God expects us to fight for the good of our faith, restating our identity in Christ to the world.” For more information on “Dangerous Good,” visit http://bit.ly/danggood. www.mancardpodcast.com
