In this episode of The Sowers Podcast, Rich Birch unpacks why most churches are missing people before they ever have a chance to stay. Drawing on decades of experience in multi-site leadership and church growth strategy, Rich breaks down what first-time guests are really asking, why invite culture matters more than marketing, and how churches of any size can make simple changes that lead to lasting growth. In this episode, you'll discover:Why the average church is far “stickier” than leaders realizeThe two subconscious questions every first-time guest is askingWhy being “friendly” is not enough anymoreHow invite culture fuels discipleship, leadership development, and missionSimple changes churches of 70–100 people can make right nowWhy teaching still matters deeply to unchurched peopleWhether you're leading a church plant, a small congregation, or a multi-site church, this conversation will challenge and equip you to remove barriers and help more people encounter Jesus.GUEST BIO Rich Birch is a trailblazer in the multi-site church movement across North America. In the Quaker tradition, waiting worship is never an empty silence; it is a profound, shared, expectant stillness. In this experimental episode, we gathered together for worship at Green St. Meeting in Philadelphia, placed field microphones around the worship space, and created an immersive, stereo audio documentary of communal waiting. You will hear the physical reality of people gathering together, complete with passing cars, the creaking of benches, and the distant coo of a happy infant. We invite you to grab your headphones and use this immersive hour to center down into a deep, worshipful silence wherever and whenever you are. Become a monthly supporter! Most flower and vegetable growers can add herbs to their existing crop plans without changing what they're already doing- and dried herbs can complement the fresh crops by providing a year-round income stream. On this week's podcast we talk with Emily Springer of Meeting House Farm and Collaborative in Maine about how she grows herbs on the farm and sells them through the collaborative. Emily started the collaborative so growers can use the online sales platform to connect with buyers nationwide and ship herbs from their own farms. She tells us how over 80% of the herbs sold in the United States are imported, and the $12 billion dollar market is expected to double over the next decade. We discuss which herbs are in demand, how to grow and dry them, how to join the collaborative, and the profitability of growing herbs. Though many overseas producers have a lower cost of production, domestic growers can compete on quality and transparency in the herb market. The conversation also covers harvesting, processing, pest management, and how much of the labor associated with drying and processing herbs can be done in the offseason when the farm is less busy. A few months ago, twenty police officers smashed down the door of Westminster Quaker meetinghouse and arrested a handful of young activists as they sat eating hummus and breadsticks. This dramatic raid triggered a profound response from a faith community that hasn't been the target of a similar action since the 17th century. When the very act of dissent is being criminalized, how do we stand up for what is right? How do we demand justice while leaving the door open for reconciliation? Can silence, solidarity, and a simple cup of tea challenge the aggression of the state? The three suspected witches are now in custody in Salem Village and are publicly examined by colonial magistrates at the Meeting House. The first two suspects, local beggar woman Sarah Good and the scandalous but frail Sarah Osborn, deny being witches and blame others. The third suspect, Rev. Parris' Native American slave Tituba, begins like the others by denying the charges. However she soon changes her story and weaves a kaleidoscopic narrative full of fantastic characters that enthralls the village. Everyone is amazed with wonder but also struck with fear at the potential size of the witch conspiracy, which now seems much larger than the usual small handful of suspects that New Englanders are used to. The actual 1692 written accounts of these three examinations are used as the primary source for the script of this episode. We go on the road, for the first of our "Revolution 'Round the Corner" podcasts! Today we visit the Edmund Fowle House in Watertown. Built by cordwainer Edmund Fowle in 1772, it was still unfinished when the Massachusetts Provincial Congress leased it two years later to house the Provincial Council--with Boston occupied by British troops and the charter government suspended by General Gage--the elected government moved to Watertown. The Provincial Congress met in the Meeting House across the street, and the Council met upstairs at the Edmund Fowle House. Here on July 18, 1776 they read the Declaration from the window--its first public reading in Massachusetts--and the next day, July 19, they made the independent country's first international treaty, with the Mi'kmaq Nation, the first to recognize American independence. We take a tour of the Edmund Fowle House with Marilynne Roach and Joyce Kelly from the Historical Society of Watertown, which has been restoring this remarkable place!
We are joined this morning by multi-award-winning actor and director Karen Allen who will be appearing at the New Marlborough Meeting House on August 12th at 4:30 p.m.
