In this ep we're joined by special guests, and the writers of new book Broken Brains, Jamila Rizvi and Rosie Waterland. Two women whose lives were turned upside down by illness, trauma, and the brutal reality of trying to keep your head above water when your brain and body won’t cooperate, and the bills keep coming anyway. We talk about the invisible costs of being unwell, the gap between public support and real-life needs, and the quiet shame that follows financial instability and even lasagna inequality (yes, really). You’ve probably heard the hype: tech jobs = massive salaries. But can you still get a slice of the pie if you don’t work in a technical role? This week’s Money Diarist is here to say… yes, you absolutely can. She’s in her early 30s, earning up to $650K "total comp" a year and building her dream home. But her path into tech was anything but traditional. No coding background, just a string of gutsy moves, lucky breaks, and saying yes before she felt “ready.” We talk about what big tech money actually looks like behind the scenes: the shares, the bonuses, the six-figure tax bills, the lifestyle creep... and the pressure that comes with it all. She’s open, honest, and full of wisdom about building wealth in a world that wasn’t necessarily built for her. If you’ve ever looked at a job description and thought, “I don’t tick all the boxes, so I won’t apply,” this one’s your sign to rethink what’s possible. The ratification of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, or ECOA, 50 years ago marked the end of illegal lending practices that discriminated against borrowers based on their race, sex, age, religion, national origin, marital status, and source of income. Financial inequality, however, is still a persistent issue in the United States. One solution to this ongoing issue is closing the education gap when it comes to topics surrounding financial literacy. In this special episode, we sit down with Courtney Pettway, CEO and Co-Founder of KidVestors, and Ashley Leftwich, CEO of Rock the Street, Wall Street. These organizations are two of the 50 projects supporting women's financial independence that were awarded funds as part of the SoFi Give Her Credit Program. Both organizations seek to empower young people by teaching them the fundamentals of saving and budgeting, the benefits of growing their wealth through investing, and exposing them to female role models in math and finance. Kidvestors is an award-winning educational platform that teaches kids about money and finance tops in fun, accessible ways. Rock the Street, Wall Street is a non-profit organization that teaches the fundamentals of investing and finance to high school girls and undergraduate women.
