Chris Williams and Chris Hassel cover a packed week in sports and beyond. The guys begin by honoring the victims of the tragic Muscatine murders before diving into the latest developments on Capitol Hill as college sports leaders, conference commissioners, and lawmakers continue debating the future of college athletics. They discuss the possibility of a college football super league, the ongoing NIL and revenue-sharing battle, and what it could mean for programs like Iowa and Iowa State.
Bret Bielema has been in the room 18 times as a head coach in the two biggest conferences in the game. This year, the room was Big Ten spring meetings in Southern California.Head coaches, athletic directors, commissioners, all in the same space, hashing out the future of the game. And what came out of Terranea this year was one the entire sport was anticipating — a playoff expansion debate that isn't slowing down, a new punt rule nobody practiced for, and a conference room full of some of the best coaches in the sport figuring out what comes next.Todd Blackledge and I brought Illinois head coach Bret Bielema on this weeks episode of Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth to break it all down, fueled by our founding sponsor 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beatHere's what stood out:* Coach Bielema wants 24 teams in the playoff — And he has receipts. He was leading a 12-1 Wisconsin team in the BCS era that got left out and that experience never left him. His argument now, is that the sport has changed too much — NIL, revenue share, roster management — for only 12 teams to have a chance at winning it all. * The punt rule landed wrong — Not because it's necessarily a bad rule, but because it showed up after spring ball, with zero preparation time. In 18 years as a head coach, Coach Bielema has never seen something this consequential arrive so late and so unannounced. * The Big Ten room itself is different — He described it with real affection. P.J. Fleck to his right, Matt Rhule to his left, Dan Lanning and Curt Cignetti in the mix. Coaches who are who they are, every single day. And above all, Tony Petitti — a commissioner who communicates before the meeting, not during it. Nobody walks in cold. Nobody gets defensive. That, Coach Bielema says, is what separates this conference right now. Then we turned to Champaign — and what's being built inside that building.48% of his roster is new and for this program to meet its expectations and recent standards they must develop a true connection with one another and that is the focus of this off-season. The way Coach Bielema guides that is what will stand out. On the field, he's as excited about his wide receiver room as he's ever been, his safeties could be among the best in the conference and quarterback Katin Houser heads into fall camp as the guy.But the line that stuck with me didn't come from the coach. It came from Houser himself, during our spring visit.“Around here, the hallways are warm.”Hope you enjoy today's conversation and we are so appreciative of the support as we continue to grow Y-Option. Most college football fans hate the idea of a 24-team College Football Playoff. But Ryan Day and Ohio State may not stand in the way. On today's Daily Buckeye Blitz, we break down why Ohio State doesn't necessarily need playoff expansion, why Ryan Day called it "debatable" whether it helps the Buckeyes, and why the Big Ten — led by Tony Petitti — is pushing hard for a 24-team CFP. We discuss what this means for Ohio State, the Big Ten, the regular season, The Game, playoff seeding, and the future of college football. #OhioStateFootball #Buckeyes #RyanDay #CollegeFootballPlayoff #BigTen Tuesday, May 26, 2026 Join Kalshi and Get $10 Subscribe to the Podcast
Are we not talking enough about the impact first-year offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is going to have at Ohio State this year? That is the main topic of conversation on today's show with Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle. Also on the docket: * Who will blink first in the "CFP standoff" between Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC commish Greg Sankey? Petitti wants a 24-team field. And if he doesn't get it, he will elect to keep the CFP at 12 teams. A 16-team CFP is off the table as far as the Big Ten is concerned. It's either 24 or 12. * What do we expect from Payton Pierce this season as he takes over as the Buckeyes' starting middle linebacker? How do we feel about the LB room overall? * We get JBook's prediction of who will finish second and third on Ohio State's team in receptions and receiving yards this season. All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish.
Twenty-four teams? Sixteen teams? Will the SEC & Big Ten ever come together? Our man Pete Fiutak has plenty to say about it all. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, we react to Tony Petitti’s public push for a 24-team College Football Playoff and try to sort through what it actually means for the sport. Is expansion really about access, regular-season stakes, and rewarding more teams, or is it mostly about television inventory, conference leverage, and the ongoing ESPN vs. Fox tug-of-war? We also talk through why the SEC’s preference for 16 teams suddenly puts some fans in the strange position of... rooting for Greg Sankey. Then it’s time for an ACC vibe check, as we take a look at the conference before full preview season kicks into gear. Miami looks like the league’s clearest headliner, but after that, things get messy fast. We work through the conference’s biggest connective tissues, including offensive line questions, thin receiver rooms, quarterback uncertainty, Cal’s wide range of outcomes, Louisville’s favorable path, Georgia Tech’s possible regression, and whether Virginia Tech or NC State could turn into a surprise playoff-adjacent story. Also included: Slices 'N Steps in NYC, illegal-streaming hypotheticals, Chili’s corn nostalgia, and the beginning of what may become a fully realized ACC-as-abandoned-mall taxonomy. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and RJ Abeytia are back in studio discussing the news that has come out of the Big Ten's spring meetings in Rancho Palos Verdes, at the beautiful Terranea Resort. USC football head coach Lincoln Riley likely had the shortest commute to the meetings, and he ended up speaking to Brandon Marcello about his confidence in the team they have put together for the 2026 season. With some big wins last season over Michigan, Iowa and Nebraska, 15 returning starters, the No. 1 high school recruiting class and the hiring of Hall of Fame coach Gary Patterson to run the defense, Riley feels this Trojan squad is primed for an explosion. With athletic directors, head coaches and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti all in attendance at Terranea, there was plenty of college football big-picture talk, from expanding the College Football Playoffs to College Sports Commission's oversight of player compensation to the Big Ten breaking away and creating its on governance model. The guys give their thoughts on what went down at the Big Ten meetings and what it could mean for the USC football program. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti proposed an expanded playoff model
The guys dedicated the second hour to a conversation that has continually frustrated them both.
Ryan Day and Ross Bjork support Tony Petitti's march toward 24 team playoff.
Chad Leistikow and Scott Dochterman break down Iowa's brutal early Big Ten football schedule, debate the future of a possible 24-team College Football Playoff, and revisit which Kirk Ferentz teams could've made legitimate postseason runs. Plus: Nebraska's offseason hype machine fires up again, Ben McCollum gets extended at Iowa, and the Hawkeye women add roster depth through the portal and international recruiting.
-Michigan entered as 6.5 point favorites last night and had scored 90+ points in each NCAA Tournament game coming in…did they keepthe high scoring going or did UConn slow them down?-We can only imagine what Tony Petitti would be doing right now if his conference had bot the women's AND men's nationalchampions, as well as football….and a good chance at baseball/softball in the summer….Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
We're trying to figure out what Tony Petitti is trying to do.
In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, hosts Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr discuss the Big Ten's 24-team College Football Playoff proposal and wonder if commissioner Tony Petitti has maybe gone a little too far. Does college football actually need a playoff comprised of 24 teams?
The Big Ten's commissioner, Tony Petitti, spent much of this season trying to do two things: 1) Expand the Playoff to his liking, and 2) Get his member schools to sign a big private capital deal. Neither happened, and the conference now appears to have wasted a lot of time off the field even as it was winning a third-straight national championship on it. Matt Brown of the tremendous Extra Points newsletter and document library joins Alex and Richard to talk about these misadventures, in particular: * How Petitti has made himself the sport's main bureaucratic villain, taking a role that SEC commissioner Greg Sankey may have seen as his birthright* Why a lot of the Big Ten wanted this private capital deal * Why it didn't ultimately come together, despite those wishes* The one actual good reason for wanting the deal, explained by Matt * Why Rutgers' finances are so bad You can read Matt several times every week by subscribing to his Extra Points newsletter. We are both happy subscribers, along with most conference commissioners, countless athletic directors, and anyone else who cares about being informed on the off-field movements shaping college football. SZD paying subscribers will hear a lot more from Matt later this week He'll join us on a subscriber episode to discuss Playoff non-expansion, the state of the football calendar, the NCAA's stalled (?) efforts to get an antitrust exemption from Congress, the eligibility crisis in multiple sports, the race to fund excess NIL money on top of the House settlement, and the topic that's always on all of our minds: basketball video game licensing. James Franklin lands at Virginia Tech in a move that puts him in direct recruiting war with Penn State. USC proves it can win Big Ten-style football, while the playoff logjam grows with the SEC potentially flooding the field with two-loss teams.

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back to discuss the breaking news that Purdue offensive lineman transfer DJ Wingfield won't be available to the Trojans this season after losing the eligibility lawsuit he filed against the NCAA. On Monday judge James Selna heard arguments from Wingfield's lawyer and NCAA council and ended up ruling against Wingfield's request for an injunction. The Trojans picked up Wingfield out of the portal and the Redondo Beach (Calif.) Redondo Union grad was projected to be USC's starting left guard this fall. Not having Wingfield available is a major blow to a position group that was already searching for answers after losing players like Jonah Monheim to the draft and Emmanuel Pregnon and Mason Murphy to the portal. To replace Wingfield, the Trojans will likely turn to either Tobias Raymond or Micah Banuelos to fill the position. On Friday the Trojans held a scrimmage in the Coliseum to end fall camp and Connor shares some general thoughts on what he saw. Please note, while media was allowed to attend, we are not permitted to report on the details of what went down. The guys also talk about some Big Ten news including the leaked college football playoff expansion plan from Tony Petitti and the sanctions handed down to the Michigan Wolverines. On Thursday's episode, we made our predictions for Michigan's impending sanctions coming out of the Conor Stallions saga. On Friday, the verdict came in. Ross Dellenger may now also be called Nostradamus because he was spot on with his predictions. Over $30-million in fines and a three-game suspension for head coach Sherrone Moore were the main highlights from the ruling. Andy Staples and Steven Godfrey join Ross in recapping the reaction to the ruling and discussing where Michigan goes from here.Expanding the College Football Playoff has been a talking point since the format's inception. It has grown from four to twelve teams, but that does not seem to be enough to some in college football. While sixteen seems to be a natural progression, a much larger number was suggested recently. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti threw out the idea of a 28-team playoff and sent the college football world into an uproar. Was this suggestion just a ruse for a more preferable plan? Why was this the only playoff idea that was reported on? How realistic is a 28-team playoff? The guys answer all of these questions and more as they look toward the future of the College Football Playoff.Later in the show, they discuss Virginia Tech's athletic director, Whit Babcock, and his presentation to the university's Board explaining where college football is headed and his pressing need for more funding. What might a super league look like in the college football landscape and how close are we to its arrival? Is the constant desire for change and money ruining the sport for the fans? Andy, Ross and Steven explain the crossroads college football is at after Babcock's comments. Finally, there was a recent change in the FPI over the weekend. A change that came without any games being played and not much notable news that affects the product on the field. Some SEC teams were bumped up and some ACC teams were knocked down. This appears to be all the motivation needed for SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee to call the system out for being “rigged.” The guys discuss coach Lashlee's comments and give their own thoughts on the importance of the FPI.Plus, the guys end the show with some breaking news about Auburn and the four new national football titles they picked up somewhat arbitrarily on Tuesday morning! Things Discussed: Pre-show: Talking Lions. Sam wants to be talked off the ledge because they let Frank Ragnow retire without a plan for center. Seth says jump, because they probably got caught flat-footed and are going to have to roll with a rookie or Graham Glasgow. Big Ten Meetings in Las Vegas: It's a little too on the nose. Tony Petitti's turnaround: He said Michigan had been punished enough. I think he's a puppet and the TV people told him you'd better protect the Asset. I also hate that this is how it works—these cases should be judged on their merits and clearly the main considerations are money and power. Craig agrees. Sam asks who benefits from leaking this before Big Ten Media Days. I don't know. Sam asks why would Petitti want that out there and I say probably because, like all of us, he thinks he's a person, and that if everyone understood his viewpoint they'd agree with his actions. Football: What's the offensive X-factor other than Bryce? I suggest receiver, since they're only talking about McCulley being a difference-maker, and it's a little concerning that Andrew Marsh is high on the list of names they bring up. The other guys say offensive line. Craig thinks they can be a lot better, and so does Sam. I say I think they'll be fine but that there are too many ceilings for this year, versus down the road when Babalola/Frazier/Efobi/Guarnera/Sprague have really come into their own. We agree Link belongs inside. Who was Michigan's best OL last year? Seth: Myles Hinton, even if he “liked fishing more than finishing.” Sam: nuh-uh, it was Priebe. Craig: Priebe. Basketball: Building with a lot of very tall men. It's a good strategy to get the hardest position to recruit and develop, if you can get them all to stick around and wait to be developed when the portal is so hot. Seth: you only need one or two.

FOX Sports' lead College Football analyst Joel Klatt sits down with the Commissioner of the Big Ten, Tony Petitti, to discuss what he would like the College Football Playoff to look like in the future and where things stand as the Power Conferences try to reach an agreement on a new format. Petitti states what he believes the new format should try to accomplish for the sport and lays out why the Big Ten is in favor of a 16-team format with 4 Automatic Qualifiers for both the Big Ten and the SEC. He also gives his opinion of the “5+11” model put forward by the SEC and whether it is a format that the Big Ten would consider. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
