Punchless Nats, Passive Leadership, and a Bullpen Collapse

The Talk Nats Podcast w/Dan Holmi

The Washington Nationals are spiraling, having been swept at home by the lowly Cardinals and scoring just three runs in three games. While MacKenzie Gore gave a gutsy performance, the offense continues to vanish when it matters most, and Davey Martinez's passive leadership is raising eyebrows. The team is now 5–18 when they allow the first run, highlighting just how ineffective the bats are at playing from behind. Frustration is mounting — from fans and players alike — and there's a growing sense that Martinez's lack of visible fire and accountability is contributing to the team's lifelessness on the field. Beyond the dugout, the front office has made critical errors, especially in constructing the league's worst bullpen, and ownership isn't doing much to inspire confidence either. With a bare-minimum payroll, dead money tied up in bad contracts, and no visible commitment to spending, the Lerner family's silence is deafening. Rizzo and Martinez are both in contract years, yet no changes appear imminent, even as the team continues to underperform. Until there's leadership that demands better — whether from the manager, GM, or owners — this team will remain stuck in neutral, wasting the potential of promising young talent Use code MINUTECAST – $20 off your first SeatGeek order:  http://www.seatgeek.com

The Nats rallied late with the bases loaded, but a CJ Abrams pop up resulted in a 4-2 loss on Saturday afternoon to the Cardinals. Al discusses the 4th consecutive defeat for Washington just after winning three in a row earlier in the week.(04:20) Davey Martinez was critical of the team after the game for issuing too many walks and conversely not drawing enough of them. Abrams swung on the first pitch against embattled St Louis closer Ryan Helsley with bases jammed in the bottom of the 9th with two outs and down two runs.(09:00) Dylan Crews slugged his 5th homer of the season to put the Nationals on the board in the bottom of the 8th.  His OPS currently sits at .571.(11:30) Trevor Williams gave up all four runs in the top of the 2nd.  Williams is currently staying in the rotation as Brad Lord is being moved back to the bullpen.(15:00) The 'pen was unscathed in three innings of work and Al highlights how well Cole Henry has mostly been performing.(16:30) Al reads some of the plethora of emails we received for feedback on the new MASN+ streaming app.(22:15) A special interview with Perry Giannis, President of Expos Fest, an annual gala in Quebec, that is to support a great cause.  Perry tells Tim why he thinks there needs to be more momentum for Felipe Alou to get inducted into the HOF and why Jose Vidro's number was retired at the event.

The Nats led 3-0 entering the top of the 6th, but in less than a half hour they yielded eight Guardian runs on their way to an 8-6 loss. Mark & Al evaluate Michael Soroka, who initially seemed to have an excellent outing coming off the IL, but his scoreless effort turned into being tagged with four Cleveland runs. Soroka took the mound in the 6th after needing only 67 pitches prior to that frame. (9:25) Jorge Lopez & Andrew Chafin each struggled mightily in the nightmare inning, including a run scoring wild pitch. The low key positive came from Cole Henry, who tossed three scoreless innings to keep the game in striking distance. (13:30) The offense scored six runs off of 13 hits, but Davey Martinez was critical of their 4 for 19 effort with RISP in his postgame press conference. (23:00) What is swirling in GM Mike Rizzo's head regarding the state of the bullpen? (31:30) Washington hosts St. Louis & Erick Fedde on Friday night. Fedde has made seven starts this season and is sporting a 4.78 ERA.

The Nats topped the Orioles 4-3 on Wednesday night for their fourth win in the past five games.  Mark & Al leadoff with James Wood, who immediately hit his 8th homer of the season, tying him for the NL lead.  It was the hardest hit homer by a National in Navy Yard in the Statecast Era (2015-present).(07:20) CJ Abrams played all nine innings on Wednesday in his second rehab start in Harrisburg.  There is a chance that he will return to Washington's lineup in Thursday's series finale.  Hear what Davey Martinez's reply was to Mark's question about which lefty bat will be in the leadoff spot when Abrams is back.(11:15) Josh Bell also homered in the 1st inning, his 4th of the year.  Bell is still struggling at the plate as his OPS sits at a disappointing .577.(15:00) Trevor Williams only gave up one run in five innings of work. Williams has made five starts thus far and after a slow start, he has thrown back to back solid outings.(19:45) Four relievers combined to take over after Williams departed.  They inherited a 3-1 lead and the O's tied up it in the top of the 8th before Luis Garcia Jr.s go ahead sacrifice fly.  Kyle Finnegan then completed the save, he is nine for nine this year and leads the NL.(26:30) Andrew McCutchen recently tweeted that he knows Jorge Lopez was not intentionally throwing at him last week in Pittsburgh.  So why were Davey and Lopez each suspended?

Mark (Live from Pittsburgh) & Al discuss how curious of a decision MLB made in opting to suspend Davey. All of this began with Paul DeJong getting hit in the face on Tuesday night, which resulted in him landing on the IL with a fractured nose. (14:00) The offense was quite anemic in 1-0 loss on Thursday afternoon. Nathaniel Lowe was the only member of the lineup to have multiple hits. Washington only scored four total runs in the final three game of this series in Pittsburgh. (17:30) Trevor Williams' best outing of the season was wasted as he only allowed one run in his five innings of work. The bullpen for only the 3rd time this season was not charged with a run. Lucas Sims had an encouraging appearance as he tossed a scoreless bottom of the 6th. (23:40) The final leg of the road trip moves to Colorado for a three game series. The Washington Nationals have made a significant roster addition by signing former All-Star shortstop Paul DeJong to a one-year, $1 million contract. DeJong, known for his power-hitting abilities, will transition to third base, a position that has faced consistency challenges since Anthony Rendon's departure. At 31, DeJong's extensive experience is expected to bolster the Nationals' power-hitting capabilities after they finished last in the National League with only 135 home runs last season. To accommodate DeJong on the 40-man roster, the team placed right-hander Josiah Gray on the 60-day injured list due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery. With DeJong joining the team, fans are optimistic about the upcoming season, especially with his right-handed bat providing valuable options against left-handed pitchers. Manager Davey Martinez and General Manager Mike Rizzo are focused on building a balanced roster while nurturing promising prospects. DeJong's prior experience at third base and the addition of veterans like Amed Rosario, alongside young players such as José Tena and Trey Lipscomb, will create a competitive environment as the team prepares for spring training and a potential turnaround season.

Dylan Crews debuted in front nearly 33K fans but the Nats lost 5-2 on Monday night in D.C. against the AL leading Yankees. Mark & Al evaluate Crews' evening as he went 0 for 3 but did a draw walk in defeat. Mark also explains the best he can as to why Davey Martinez did not hold a postgame press conference. (10:00) Aaron Judge stole the stole... with his glove. Judge made two excellent plays n the field and one of them resulted in a double play at the expense of James Wood. (16:30) Jacob Young homered for the third time this season while hitting 9th. Young has played so well defensively, that he forced Washington to put Crews in RF, which was unexpected in Spring Training. (25:15) Mitchell Parker only lasted for four innings on 83 pitches. Parker also dropped a routine toss while covering 1B for his fourth error on the season. The Nats led early on but lost 4-2 on Saturday night in Atlanta. Mark (From Cobb County, GA) & Al begin with the team's decision to call up Drew Millas instead of Dylan Crews to replace the injured Alex Call this weekend. The organization decided not to alter the date of Crews' debut after Call was placed on the IL due to a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his left foot. (08:30) All the offense came from Jose Tena's first career MLB homer. Tena had a trio of hits and so far is hitting .400 since joining Washington two weeks ago. (11:45) CJ Abrams had another costly error and it occurred in the pivotal bottom of the 6th. Something seems off with Abrams on defense recently. (18:00) Jake Irvin exited the game after 83 pitches and the bullpen did not come through. Irvin gave up a pair of runs in just over five innings of work and Mark notes why he feels Irvin should have been left in the game longer as opposed to bringing in Robert Garcia. (23:20) Jacob Young was picked off on Saturday after making two outs on the bases on Friday night. We have run out of commentary on this team problem that continues on a near daily basis. (26:30) This was the 1,000th game managed by Davey Martinez since he took over before the 2018 season. The NL Rookie of the Year race is already very crowded, but Wood is putting himself in fringe contention. (08:00) Keibert Ruiz's RBI double continued his strong August performance. His OPS this month is at .855, which is significantly better than his season's total (.631). (12:15) Luis Garcia Jr. had a pair of hits and he is making a case as the team's MVP this season. Garcia's average is up to .296 and he is quietly competing for the NL Batting title. (18:25) Juan Yepez's hit a 3-run HR to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 8th. Yepez is coming off some rest after Joey Gallo was activated onto the roster. (21:00) Patrick Corbin lasted six innings and earned the 100th win of his career. (06:00) Luis Garcia Jr. hit third and rewarded Davey Martinez with a big afternoon. Garcia had three hits including a solo homer to give his team a five run lead as he was a triple shy of the cycle. The hosts use this opportunity to praise Garcia for his solid season and reflect on the recent obstacles he overcame within the organization. (12:00) Alex Call was part of the four run opening inning as he came through with a RBI single. Call has been very impressive at the plate in his brief time up at the majors this season. (16:30) DJ Herz earned the win by only allowing one run in five innings of work. Following a two hour rain delay, the Nats crushed the Cardinals 14-3 on Saturday night. Mark (From St. Louis) & Al begin with the reports that Jesse Winker was traded to the Mets in the middle of the game and as of taping it is unclear what the compensation will be. The Nationals signed Winker in February to a minor league deal after he struggled mightily last season in Milwaukee. (11:00) James Wood had his best game yet at the plate as he doubled twice, had four hits, and reached base five times. Wood had multiple hits that had an exit velocity of over 100 MPH. (14:00) Harold Ramirez replaced Winker in the middle of the game (coincidence says Davey Martinez) and came through with a trio of hits. He is hitting .308 since joining Washington this month. (22:30) Jake Irvin had a second straight decent outing following a few clunkers before the All-Star Break. Irvin did not give up any runs until the bottom of the 6th when he gave up a 2-run HR. The Nats were blanked 4-0 by the visiting Padres on Tuesday night to end their three game win streak. Mark & Al marvel at how the Nationals have somehow already been shutout 11 times this season. The offense only mustered five hits and did not draw any walks in the loss. (07:00) Jacob Young attempted a bunt early in the game with Trey Lipscomb on 2nd base. The hosts air their grievances over this decision, which is not a rarity for Davey Martinez. Lipscomb doubled in the game, but it was only his fourth extra-base hit of the season. (11:00) The only member of the lineup with multiple hits was Juan Yepez. He has gotten a hit in all 14 games he's played in the majors since being called up from AAA. (18:30) DJ Herz returned to the rotation and had a solid outing in defeat. He did not allow a run until the 5th, but then gave up Back-to-back HRs. Davey Martinez gave the team off from "BP" for additional rest. (06:00) Washington only collected four hits and Luis Garcia Jr. had three of them. Garcia cooled off a bit at the plate in May as opposed to April (.253 vs. .311). (10:00) Keibert Ruiz missed a tag on a play at the plate that brought in an early Guardians run. This leads to extended discussion on Ruiz's defense so far this season. (15:30) Not a banner night for the bullpen as they allowed five runs in just two innings of work.
