#556 MONSTER MUSIC MONDAY - The episode focuses on reviewing and providing feedback on music submissions from listeners. - Submissions are accepted via the Mike Herrera Podcast Facebook group, where artists can share their YouTube links. - Critiques various aspects of the submitted songs, including production quality, vocal performance, and song structure. - Offers constructive criticism and praise, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement in each submission. Some Advice and Tactics: Avoid Excessive Auto-Tune - Use auto-tune sparingly and only as an effect. Overuse can detract from the authenticity of the vocal performance, especially in genres like punk rock. Simplify Intros - Keep the intro of your song short and engaging. Long intros or unnecessary samples can cause listeners to lose interest before the main part of the song begins. Focus on Production Quality - Invest time and resources into ensuring high-quality production. Good production can significantly enhance the listening experience and make your music more appealing to a wider audience. Duh! Monster Music Monday Submissions: 1. Laura, a 60's something young lady, came into our Macomb Township Chiropractic with neck pain and low back pain. She described her pain in her neck as constant, and rated it at a 7 on a scale of 1-10 for severity. Laura said she was suffering with the pain for over a year and was finding no relief from the over the counter medications she was taking or from her doctors. She stated that she sat a lot at work, was an avid bowler, and confessed she looked at her cell phone a lot throughout the day, which was causing what we term as “text neck.” Text neck is a rather new but becoming very common problem where one puts their neck in an unnatural position repeatedly, causing the spine to realign in an unnatural position. This causes pinched nerves and misalignments, which causes pain, irritation, and inflammation of the neck. Laura's neck pain was affecting her day to day activities which included driving and sleeping, walking, working, and recreational activities. She also mentioned she recently developed knee pain which she thinks may be from walking funny due to the neck and back pain she had. We took x-rays of Laura on her first visit and after analysis from Dr. Chris found, multiple misalignments in the spine in the neck and back area were found. Laura began a specific care plan tailored to her needs, which included chiropractic adjustments, postural rehabilitation, electrical stimulation, massage bed, and ice therapy. After six weeks of therapy, another set of x-rays were taken and improvement was shown. Laura also documented her neck was “mildly better” and that she didn't wake up with pain anymore! She was also pleased her bowling had improved. Laura has been a patient with us for about 7 months now at Macomb Twp Chiropractic and her last re-exam showed even greater improvement. Today she is rating her neck pain at a 2, which is a great improvement from the 7 when she started. She has boasted she has no more back pain and is feeling well. She stated in her testimonial her daughter had noticed that she was developing a hump in the bottom of her neck due to poor posture of her head, and it's now straightened out and her posture looks so much better! Here's Laura's Macomb Township Chiropractic Neck Pain Relief YouTube Testimonial. Neck pain is one of the most common problems a person can experience. It can be caused by misalignments in the spine, traumas, poor posture, strains, disc degeneration, or arthritis. Pinching of the nerves in the neck causes pain, irritation, and inflammation in the neck and all surrounding muscles and tissues. Overuse of a cell phone today is also a common reason for neck pain. Putting the neck in an unnatural position for many hours a day can cause permanent misalignment of the neck. What are the Symptoms of Neck Pain? Pain can range from dull or excruciating, which can be in one spot or radiate to other parts of the body such as the shoulders or arms. Muscle tightness and spasms, decreased ability to turn the head, headaches, shoulder pain, numbness and tingling, and loss of strength in the arms or hands are also symptoms. What Kind of Problems Arise from Neck Pain? Headaches, spasms, difficulty sleeping, trouble performing daily activities, turning your head, sitting, standing, bending, driving, working, and even relaxing. Constant neck pain can cause emotional problems as well. How Does Chiropractic Help? Chiropractic adjustments help relieve neck pain and stiffness by correcting misalignments in the spine, increasing joint mobility and mechanics, and reducing pressure on the nerves. This increases range of motion, releases pinched nerves, reduces inflammation, and decreases pain, stiffness, and soreness. What Does Macomb Township Chiropractic Offer? Dr. Chris McNeil performs many different options and treatments for neck pain. Each patient is given a unique treatment plan based on their x-rays, pain level, and individual expectations. Treatments include manual manipulation of the neck, as well as adjustments without cracking. These include electrical stimulation, postural rehabilitation therapy, disc/spinal decompression therapy for the neck (with the use of the computerized decompression table), massage tables, and heat and cold therapy.

Have you ever wondered if steroids are the best choice for managing your eczema? While both topical and oral steroids offer quick relief from severe eczema flares, understanding their long-term risks and safer alternatives can dramatically improve your quality of life. In this episode, Dr. Mondana Ghias joins Kortney and Dr. Gupta to discuss the complex role of systemic corticosteroids in eczema management. They dive deep into the short-term relief that steroids provide for severe eczema symptoms and emphasize why steroids must be approached cautiously due to potential side effects and dependency risks. Dr. Ghias also highlights the unique challenges of eczema care for individuals with skin of color, addressing differences in treatment response and the common issue of hypopigmentation caused by topical steroids. What we cover in our episode about steroid use in eczema treatment: Role of Systemic Steroids: When steroids are necessary and how they quickly manage severe eczema flares. Risks and Side Effects: Understanding the serious long-term effects of systemic and topical steroids. Steroid Withdrawal: Recognizing the signs of steroid withdrawal and strategies to manage rebound effects. Challenges of Topical Steroids for Skin of Color: The unique risks of steroid use and managing hypopigmentation. Alternatives to Steroids and Innovative Treatments: The rise of biologics and targeted therapies offering safer, long-term solutions. Ever wonder if the “asthma shot” from the ER, or those go-to steroid pills for your asthma flares, might be doing more harm than good? Dr. Dipa Sheth joins us to discuss the common pitfalls of relying too heavily on oral corticosteroids (OCS), also known as oral steroids. We unpack why these systemic medications should generally be reserved for short-term use. She also shares how improving asthma control can help you avoid frequent steroid use in the first place. Although oral steroids can effectively treat asthma flare-ups in emergency settings, overuse poses significant risks, from adrenal insufficiency to osteoporosis. We dig into ways patients can proactively manage their asthma, reduce ER visits, and talk to healthcare providers about preventive treatments (like inhalers or biologics for asthma) that keep inflammation in check without the side effects of frequent steroid use. Note: Although we discuss oral corticoid steroids, they can also be given as injections or via IV drip for asthma. We would also like to refer to them as systemic steroids as they impact the entire body, unlike inhaled steroids, which target the airways and lungs. What we cover in our episode about oral steroid overuse Understanding Oral Corticosteroids (OCS): Learn what these steroids (often called the “asthma shot” in the ER) are and how they can help with severe flare-ups. Why Overusing Steroids Can Be Risky: Discover the potential long-term side effects of relying on systemic steroids (pills, injections, or IV), from adrenal insufficiency and osteoporosis to more frequent infections. Short-Term Fix vs. Lasting Relief for Asthma Care: Learn how urgent care or ER visits may mask an under-managed condition and why seeing a specialist can improve asthma control. Safer Alternatives to OCS: Explore inhaled corticosteroids, biologics, and other preventive treatments that target asthma at its source, reducing the need for frequent steroids. Taking Control and Reducing ER Visits: Get practical strategies for working with your healthcare provider to minimize steroid use, prevent flare-ups, and break free from the cycle of repeated steroid courses. In today's episode, we're diving into Follistatin 344. Whether you're interested in performance enhancement, muscle growth, or just curious about the science behind peptide therapies, this episode is for you. What is Follistatin 344? Let's start with the basics – what exactly is Follistatin 344? Follistatin 344 is a naturally occurring protein in the human body, specifically a variant of the follistatin protein. Follistatin itself plays a crucial role in regulating various biological processes, most notably muscle growth and the regulation of myostatin, which is a negative regulator of muscle development. Follistatin 344 is a synthetic form of this protein and is often used in peptide therapy for its muscle-building properties. Is Follistatin 344 a peptide? You would be right to point out that the typical definition of a peptide is a chain of amino acids that is usually 50 amino acids or fewer. By this standard, Follistatin 344 technically exceeds the usual peptide range, as it is a protein fragment consisting of 344 amino acids. This is much larger than what would typically be classified as a peptide. Follistatin 344 is still often referred to as a "peptide" in certain contexts, especially within the realm of peptide therapy and bodybuilding communities. This is because it's a synthetic fragment of a larger protein (follistatin), and it operates in a manner similar to smaller peptides that influence biological processes like muscle growth. So, while it's not a "peptide" by the strictest definition, in many practical uses, it is referred to as such due to its role in peptide therapy and its functional characteristics similar to smaller peptides. How Does Follistatin 344 Work? Now, let's talk about how Follistatin 344 works within the body. Myostatin is a negative regulator of muscle growth. It essentially acts as a ‘brake' on muscle tissue, limiting how much muscle you can build. In individuals with high myostatin levels, muscle growth is naturally suppressed. This is where Follistatin 344 comes in. Follistatin 344 binds to myostatin and prevents it from exerting its inhibitory effects on muscle development. This leads to increased muscle mass, strength, and performance. The action of Follistatin 344 is similar to lifting the restrictions on muscle growth, essentially removing the natural “limiters” that might otherwise hinder progress. Potential Benefits of Follistatin 344 So, why might someone be interested in using Follistatin 344? What are the potential benefits? Increased Muscle Mass: By inhibiting myostatin, Follistatin 344 promotes muscle growth. This makes it popular among bodybuilders and athletes who are looking to increase lean muscle mass without the use of traditional anabolic steroids. Improved Muscle Strength and Performance: Along with muscle mass, strength can also improve as muscle tissue is allowed to grow more effectively. This can translate into better performance in sports and physical activities. Faster Recovery: Some users report faster recovery times from intense workouts or injuries. This could be due to the increased muscle repair and regeneration that Follistatin 344 promotes. Fat Loss: Follistatin 344 may also indirectly support fat loss. As muscle mass increases, the body's metabolism tends to accelerate, which could lead to more efficient fat burning. Potential for Anti-Aging Benefits: There's ongoing research into the potential for Follistatin 344 to slow age-related muscle loss. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass and strength, so this peptide could potentially help mitigate these effects. Potential Side Effects and Warnings While Follistatin 344 has promising benefits, like any therapy, it's important to be aware of potential side effects and warnings. Unknown Long-Term Effects: As with many peptide therapies, the long-term effects of using Follistatin 344 are not yet fully understood. Most research has been done in animal models, and human studies are still relatively limited. As a result, the long-term safety profile remains unclear. Muscle Imbalance: Because Follistatin 344 inhibits myostatin, there's the possibility of muscle imbalances. Overuse of this peptide could lead to muscle growth in certain areas of the body, while other muscles may not develop as effectively. This could result in a distorted appearance or even strain on the body's natural systems, including the cardiovascular system. Potential Impact on Other Growth Factors: Follistatin also regulates other growth factors in the body. There could be unintended effects on areas like bone growth, fat distribution, and organ function. More research is needed to understand these potential risks. Hormonal Disruption: Peptides like Follistatin 344 interact with various hormonal pathways in the body, so improper use could potentially lead to hormonal imbalances. It's important to approach peptide therapy with caution and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new regimen. Thanks for listening to The Peptide Podcast. By now, many of you have heard of my coined term, The Mitochondrial Triad, which comprises the three most effective and efficacious ways (in my opinion) to optimize mitochondrial function. At the end of the day, mitochondrial function is the foundation of wellness and longevity until proven otherwise. With that being said, The Triad is not set in stone and is fluid based on new information, research, etc., meaning it could grow to a quad, quint and beyond. However, it would take a powerful modality, molecule, etc. with rigorous studies to make the cut. But by the end of today's conversation with renowned pharmacist and author, Dr. Nayan Patel, the case can be made that glutathione should be heavily considered. The kicker with glutathione is that we produce it endogenously, so we have some control over its abundance or depletion in our body. After all, it is the master antioxidant in our body and quenches oxidative stress, so given its powerful electron-donating properties (similar, but not exactly the same as methylene blue and C60), you can imagine the health benefits it provides when at proper levels and what happens when our body is depleted.Dr. Patel is a sought after pharmacist, wellness expert, and thought leader in his industry. He has been working with physicians since 1999 to custom develop medication for their clients and design a patient-specific drug and nutrition regimen. He has been the pharmacist of choice to celebrities, CEOs and physicians themselves. He recently published his first comprehensive book, The Glutathione Revolution. After 11 years of clinical research on the master antioxidant, glutathione, Dr. Patel and his team developed a patented technology to deliver glutathione topically, changing the game on how best to absorb GSH systemically. From this technology he additionally developed The Auro GSH Antioxidant Delivery System to create a skincare line to deliver antioxidants more efficiently and effectively than ever before at potent concentrations. Episode Summary: Welcome to this enlightening episode of Functional Health Radio with Dr. Kristin Hieshetter, where we dive deeper into the complex interplay between brain health and gut bacteria. In a follow-up to last week's compelling episode on children's neurological well-being, Dr. Hieshetter unpacks the critical role of gut microbiota in neurodevelopmental disorders. With a focus on immunomodulators like peptidoglycans, this episode explores how these bacterial components impact cognitive and emotional health, particularly in children. Dr. Hieshetter discusses the profound effects of antibiotics on children's learning and hormonal development, stressing the importance of maintaining a balanced microbiome for optimal brain connectivity. The conversation shifts to scientific findings from the journal "Protein & Cell," where Dr. Hieshetter references a significant study on the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis and its implications for neurodevelopmental disorders. Tune in to understand how the right composition of gut flora supports critical functions like synaptogenesis, which influences behaviors, anxiety levels, and stress responses. Key Takeaways: The balance of gut bacteria is crucial for children's brain development, influencing learning, hormone development, and immune responses. Peptidoglycans, derived from gut bacteria, can cross the blood-brain barrier and are instrumental in activating pattern recognition receptors, which are key in cognitive functions. Overuse of antibiotics in early childhood can disrupt learning trajectories and brain connectivity. Proper gut flora and dietary intake can regulate the body's inflammatory response, impacting social behavior and anxiety levels positively. Functional health approaches, including probiotics and low-level laser therapy, offer promising avenues for correcting imbalances in gut and brain health. Alan welcomes frequent guest and co-host Dr. Matt Standridge back to Very Dental. They dive into the evolving landscape of dental practice ownership, comparing traditional solo practices with the increasing prevalence of DSOs. The conversation explores the current incentives and hurdles for new dentists, the impact of rising dental school debt, and the practical aspects of introducing advanced procedures like aligner therapy and all-on-X implants into general practices. They also touch on the phenomenon of influencer culture in dentistry and its implications. Mostly they just laugh about our absurd profession and how it continues to change. Key Takeaways: Private practice ownership is becoming increasingly challenging due to factors like rising costs, insurance reimbursements, and patient expectations. The "one doctor, one owner" model may become less common, with more practices incorporating associates or transitioning to alternative models. Many young dentists are less driven by ownership and more interested in alternative career paths, including becoming a dental influencer. Overuse of all-on-X procedures is a concern, with potential for complications and ethical considerations. Orthodontic training, particularly with aligners, offers a high ROI and can improve overall dental skills. "Bread and butter" dentistry still has value and shouldn't be dismissed. Beware of "style over substance" in dentistry, particularly when it comes to advanced procedures. Mentorship (or "coaching") can be valuable, but find trusted sources. The Inside Scoop with Anytime Soccer Training - Discussing Youth Soccer from Around the World
In this episode, we break down an important idea: the practice deficit and how it shapes the development of youth soccer players. Many players, especially at the average level, don't accumulate enough deliberate practice hours early on, leading to technical deficiencies as they grow. We discuss the importance of starting structured technical training early—a method not embraced by most. While unstructured play is valuable, committing to focused, unopposed drills at home can create a degree of technical refinement that many players miss out on. Think of it like becoming a classically trained chef—you develop a wide-ranging skillset that serves you in any setting. I also share insights on the 80-18-2 rule, which I see in highly competitive environments like MLS academies. About 80% of players are solid but average, 18% stand out with stronger technical or physical abilities, and only 2% are the truly gifted ones—the players who seem destined to shine at the highest levels. If your child dreams of playing professionally, you need to realize that the competition is fierce. It's not just about raw talent. It's about controlling what you can—like the volume and quality of touches they get on the ball. Here's what that looks like in my house: Before and after games or practice: My sons get in deliberate practice sessions. That's 25 minutes before and occasionally something short afterward, depending on how tired they are. During the school year: Two days a week, they practice in the mornings before school, and two days after school for about 15-20 minutes. At-home coaching: For several years, I coached their teams, integrating unopposed technical training into every session. These efforts added up to an extra 200-300 hours of deliberate practice over 5-6 years. And while many families hire private trainers, I found DIY coaching more flexible and affordable. Paying for that kind of volume would be prohibitive for most. But let's be real—this approach isn't without risks: Burnout: Not every child thrives under structured, intensive practice. You have to monitor their interest and adjust. Overuse injuries: My older son experienced leg pain and back discomfort as he hit puberty, likely from a combination of growth and training volume. We've focused on physio, stretching, and rest to manage this. This is why I emphasize listening to your child's body and being mindful of risks. Diversify activities, slow down when needed, and always seek medical advice if something seems off. At the end of the day, this level of commitment isn't for everyone. But if you decide it's the right path for your family, you can minimize the practice deficit and build a technical foundation that gives your child an edge. Let's keep sharing our experiences—both successes and setbacks—so we can all learn and grow together. As always, there's no ego here, just a desire to help each other improve. Let's get better together. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anytime-soccer/support

Holistic and functional approaches to pediatric healthcare focus on addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. By looking at the whole child, these methods integrate natural treatments like homeopathics, essential oils, and dietary adjustments alongside conventional care. This approach prioritizes preventive measures, reduces the overuse of antibiotics, and improves outcomes for chronic conditions such as eczema, allergies, and behavioral concerns, all while promoting healthier development through balanced nutrition and minimized exposure to toxins. This philosophy emphasizes collaboration between healthcare providers and families, fostering open communication and informed decision-making. By addressing modern challenges like poor diets, hidden food additives, and the effects of stress and screen time, this approach supports both physical and emotional well-being in children. Ultimately, it aims to offer personalized care that nurtures long-term health and resilience.Highlights of the Podcast00:34 - Introduction to Dr. Christie Potter's Practice01:11 - Difference Between Holistic and Traditional Pediatrics02:47 - Overuse of Antibiotics04:50 - Impact of Diet on Children's Health06:00 - Functional Medicine and Its Training07:56 - Root Cause vs. Symptom Management12:02 - The Role of Gut Health in Mental and Physical Well-being22:12 - Concerns About Food Additives and Sugar25:56 - Challenges in Modern Parenting30:52 - Functional Medicine as a Solution36:42 - Issues with Standard Care and Statins41:30 - Healthcare Resources43:03 - Closing Remarks
In this episode Jennifer shares insights from her 15 years of experience as a language advisor and program director in Amman, Jordan. With over 1,800 students coached, Jennifer discusses common language errors that are often made while learning spoken Levantine Arabic. This episode focuses on two key categories of errors: 1. Verbs with Different Functions: You'll gain awareness of how Arabic verbs can differ significantly from their English counterparts. For instance, while English uses one verb for "to spread," Arabic employs two distinct verbs depending on the context—one for spreading news and another for spreading tangible items like butter. Jennifer highlights the nuances in verb usage and encourages learners to observe these differences in order to improve their communication. 2. Overuse of Delexicalized Verbs: Learn about the pitfalls of relying on delexicalized verbs and helping verbs in Arabic, such as "got" or "made." Jennifer emphasizes that Arabic verbs often carry more meaning on their own, urging learners to adopt more precise language instead of defaulting to simpler expressions that they may use in their first language. Throughout the episode, listeners will gain practical examples in Levantine Arabic and tips for navigating these common challenges learners face with this dialect. This is the beginning of a series aimed at improving your language skills by becoming aware of common mistakes Arabic learners make—stay tuned for more episodes where we'll cover additional errors and provide further insights into effective communication in Levantine Arabic. Lifespan increased and healthcare was revolutionized as people were no longer dying due to minor injuries and infections. But now, there is a real danger of losing the evolutionary arms race with superbug bacterias, who are increasingly becoming resistant to the antibiotics we have discovered so far. What are the causes that's fast tracking antibiotic resistance? What can be done to arrest this hidden pandemic? What should policymakers do? Anirban Mahapatra, microbiologist and author of ‘When The Drugs Don't Work', joins us to simplify this topic and bust the many myths that surround the use and misuse of antibiotics. We discuss:* What are superbugs?* Bacterias are everywhere* Overuse of antibiotics* How does antibiotic resistance develop?* Horizontal Gene Transfer* Moore's law vs Eroom's law* Myths about antibiotics use* Antibiotics in agriculture and poultry farming* What should be the policy response?* Market failure in drug discoveryReadings:When The Drugs Don't Work: The Hidden Pandemic that Could End Modern Medicine by Anirban Mahapatrahttps://www.animahapatra.com/Related Puliyabaazi:मानसिक आरोग्य और हम. It was based on one guy: Dr. Ancel Keys,” says Dr. Makary. How can America reverse the trend of chronic disease and poor metabolic health? Is there any hope?“The foundation of the medical profession is not to have a one-size-fits-all. It's always to consider nuance and to consider scientific detail,” says Dr. Makary.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
In this episode, Jake and Mike sit down with Dr. Chloe Carmichael, clinical psychologist and author of Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety. Together, they dive into the benefits of free speech, the mental health advantages of self-expression, and the dangers of groupthink. Dr. Carmichael introduces nine practical techniques from her book to help manage anxiety, including mindfulness, emotion-based to-do lists, and mental shortlists for redirecting energy. They also examine cultural trends contributing to the overuse and medicalization of anxiety, including the financial incentives driving overdiagnosis and the diminishing role of spirituality in society. Parenting challenges, such as schools shouldering too much responsibility and limited parental involvement, are discussed as factors influencing childhood anxiety.Dr. Carmichael and Jake highlight concerns with the current mental health system, which often focuses on symptom management rather than addressing root causes. They also stress the importance of the cautious use of screening tools to prevent the pathologization of normal experiences. The conversation explores barriers to finding the right therapist, from financial limitations to insurance challenges, and concludes with a deeper look at the intersection of mental health and gun ownership. Topics such as red flag laws, cognitive dissonance in mental health diagnosis, and the shortcomings of research on gun ownership are all addressed.Send us a text

Stop Doing So Many Spikes - Mike Cohn One of the more common mistakes I see teams make is relying too much on spikes. A spike is an activity a team performs to get smarter about something. With a spike, a team isn't trying to immediately deliver a new capability; instead, they are building the knowledge that will allow them to deliver the new capability later.Spikes are a great tool, and I'd expect every team to use them...but not on everything they work on.The best use of a spike is to reduce excess uncertainty. This could be uncertainty about how a feature should work or about how it will be built.A team may opt, for example, to spike the user interface for a particular feature. Or it may use a spike to determine if a technical approach is feasible or will perform at the required level. Each of these can be a good use of a spike. The problem comes when a team wants to use a spike on everything. Spikes should be used only in cases of extreme or excessive amounts of uncertainty. Spikes should not be used to reduce the typical, garden-variety uncertainty that exists in all work.Further, spikes should not be used to eliminate uncertainty. Teams need to be comfortable bringing work into their sprints or iterations with open issues remaining. Is your team reluctant to allow work into a sprint with any remaining uncertainty? That's sometimes the result of team members feeling excessive pressure to estimate perfectly, to always achieve the sprint goal, or to always deliver everything that they brought into a sprint. If that is happening, a Scrum Master or coach needs to work with outside stakeholders or whomever is creating these unrealistic expectations. Sometimes it's even the team members putting this pressure on themselves. But what's the problem with frequent spikes anyway? It's that overuse of spikes extends your time to value. This is especially true when the spike is done in one iteration and the rest of the work in a subsequent iteration.Overuse of spikes also reduces the extent to which teams overlap work. This can increase the burden on testers. For example, consider the case of a programmer who uses a spike to reduce the uncertainty of a backlog item. If that item is brought into the next sprint, the programmer's work has been made simpler by the spike, but the tester's has not.If your testers are struggling to keep current with the programmers, consider whether the team is doing too many spikes. It's a good question to ask yourself even when the testers don't seem overburdened, if you want to succeed with agile. In this conversation, Dr. Michael Vlerick discusses the mismatch between our modern environment and our Stone Age brains, which can impact our happiness. He highlights examples such as our predilection for sugary and fatty foods, our stress response, our sedentary lifestyle, and the artificial ways we seek dopamine boosts. Dr. Vlerick explains how our brains evolved to seek opportunities and rewards, but our modern environment often provides excessive and unhealthy stimuli. He also touches on the addictive nature of social media and the importance of cultivating attention and quieting the mind. The conversation explores the negative consequences of overusing social media, the complex nature of addiction, the role of environment in addiction, the prevalence of loneliness in modern times, the mismatch between our natural responses and the modern world, the possibility of adapting to the modern environment, the importance of habit formation, gratitude for modern living conditions, and looking forward to increasing happiness. Takeaways Our modern environment often clashes with our Stone Age brains, leading to mismatches that can impact our happiness. Examples of mismatches include our predilection for sugary and fatty foods, our stress response, our sedentary lifestyle, and the artificial ways we seek dopamine boosts. Understanding the evolutionary purpose of certain behaviors can help us navigate the challenges of our modern environment. Cultivating attention and quieting the mind are important for our well-being in an environment filled with distractions. Overuse of social media can have negative consequences, especially in young people, leading to depression and social isolation. Addiction is a complex phenomenon influenced by both chemical compounds and environmental factors. The environment plays a crucial role in addiction, as seen in studies with rats and the experiences of soldiers in the Vietnam War. Loneliness is a major problem in modern times, with one-third of adults suffering from it. Our natural responses and instincts are often mismatched with the modern world, leading to challenges in maintaining happiness. Adapting to the modern environment requires knowledge and caution. Habit formation is key to protecting against threats to happiness and increasing long-term well-being. Despite the challenges, it is important to be grateful for the improved living conditions in modern times. There are strategies and solutions to increase happiness and improve overall well-being. --- Become an Audible Member for only 99 pence for 3 months: https://bit.ly/3vzSox9 Riverside.fm: get a 15% discount by using the code MESSY or sign up here https://bit.ly/3HCU4IC Register to Receive Books for £1 from Scholastic:https://bit.ly/49lRimq Leading the Circular Fashion Revolution with Preworn: Get a 25% discount using the code MESSY25: https://bit.ly/49bEXlD Cold Case Inc (use the code MESSY and get an exclusive 15% discount): https://bit.ly/3HN75PD Connect with the Brands you love at Awin:https://bit.ly/3vzSvJ5 Find the Perfect Gardener on Care.com: https://bit.ly/4cLKcdZ Grown Alchemist: https://bit.ly/3vKGXCD Cake or Death: https://bit.ly/3J4tDfG Kids Party Craft: https://bit.ly/4cFrULj Bike Club: https://bit.ly/3xj7DuF The Code Zone: https://bit.ly/3UlspmU
