The Tampa Bay Rays lost the second game of the three-game series in Arlington against the Texas Rangers 5-3. Although Taj Bradley pitched great for five innings, the Rays bullpen was not able to hold it together as Javy Guerra allowed a three-run shot to Corey Seager. The Rays would counter with a couple solo bombs from Randy Arozarena and Brandon Lowe but it was not enough. The Rays will be unveiling a couple of statues to commemorate the 25th anniversary. One will be Evan Longoria's iconic Game 162 walk-off shot and the other Akinori Iwamura stepping on second base to get the Rays to their first World Series. The Tampa Bay Rays dropped the first game in Phoenix, Arizona as their expansion brother franchise, the Arizona Diamondbacks got their offense going early against Taj Bradley. Allowing 5 runs in the first inning for Taj was rough, but the Rays came right back in the second inning with 4 runs of their own. However, the floodgates were not closed and the Diamondbacks kept it going not only against Bradley but against Shawn Armstrong as well. The Diamondbacks got a huge three-run homer from Corbin Carroll and Evan Longoria also had a solo shot to add to the score. Jose Siri's 15th bomb of the season makes him the team lead for home runs for the Rays this year. The San Francisco Giants had an unforgettable offseason in the worst kind of way, with high profile misses on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa. The Giants, of course, had agreed to terms with Correa on a 13-year deal before it all fell apart over medical concerns following his physical. Despite this seemingly like the definite time to do so, the Giants did not sign a superstar over the offseason. They did, however, make several solid moves. Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto join the outfield rotation and address a couple of issues simultaneously. They push lesser defenders like Joc Pederson out of the outfield mix, and they also infuse some offense into a lineup that was quietly above average at scoring runs last year. The SF Giants didn't really have any major subtractions on the position player side (Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria found new teams, but neither contributed much in 2022), so Haniger and Conforto are straight up additions, not replacements. The Giants' issue in 2022 was run prevention, specifically caused by bad defense and an unreliable bullpen. Carlos Rodón joined Kevin Gausman in departing after an elite season, and the Giants replaced him with Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea. They're also getting Anthony DeSclafani back after he missed almost all of 2022 with an ankle injury. In the bullpen, the Giants' starting pitching depth bleeds over, and they also signed Taylor Rogers and Luke Jackson. Overall, the Giants look like a team that is on the fringe of the playoff picture, projected to have a win total somewhere around the mid-80s. San Francisco Giants fans already have to worry about the Dodgers and Padres in a tough NL West, but don't sleep on the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs are brimming with young talent, giving them the potential to exceed expectations in 2023 and perhaps become a problem for the foreseeable future. Evan Longoria is switching sides, and his status is the first topic discussed on today's crossover between Locked On Giants and Locked On D-backs. The SF Giants were clearly big game hunting this winter, but came away empty handed when it comes to superstars. But what should we expect from them next winter? Clearly, when elite talent is out there, the Giants are interested. They pursued Bryce Harper in 2018-19. They went after Aaron Judge and had an agreement with Carlos Correa this past offseason. Will they be the team that comes away with Shohei Ohtani next winter? Finally, the Giants and D-backs are directly compared. Which team has the higher floor? Which team has the higher ceiling? Neither host will back down from the belief that their team is better, but both respect that the D-backs are underrated and have the potential to be much better than people seem to think. The Giants, meanwhile, might not have the highest ceiling in the world (although 2021 should teach us never to assume we know a team's ceiling), but they seem to have one of the highest floors in the league. For the San Francisco Giants, Brandon Belt is certainly a Forever Giant. Be that as it may, it was still important for the SF Giants to follow through on their self-proclaimed goal of getting "younger and more athletic." Part of that can involve making tough decisions, and the Giants have done that by letting Belt and Evan Longoria walk. It was apparent in 2022 that Belt and Longoria, while important members of the Giants for many years and leaders in the clubhouse, were trending in a downward. Both players are in their mid-30s, and the Giants probably made the right call by moving on from these two popular veterans. In a roundabout way, Villar stands to benefit the most by Belt's departure. The reason is because it opens up first base for some combination of LaMonte Wade Jr., J.D. Davis, and Wilmer Flores. If Belt had returned to occupy first base, Davis and Flores would've profiled more at third base. Which would've pushed Villar, who has minor league options, to the minor leagues most likely. With third base instead wide open, Villar should be given a chance to play nearly every day for the Giants. Villar had a monster season in Triple-A, and had a huge September in the majors. If things don't work out, Davis and Flores are solid fallback options (though not great defenders at the hot corner) and Casey Schmitt is one of the Giants' best position player prospects and he made it to Triple-A last season. Changing gears, today is the deadline for teams and players to exchange arbitration figures. So far, the Giants have avoided arbitration with all but one of their arbitration-eligible players. Logan Webb is the only remaining arb-eligible Giants player who hasn't reached a salary agreement for 2023. If Webb and the Giants fail to settle by today's deadline, they'll be ticketed for an arbitration hearing, which is best avoided if possible. There's a chance the two parties settle on a one-year agreement, and there's also a chance they reach an agreement on an extension. Stay tuned for the outcome later on today. Another solid yet unspectacular signing for the San Francisco Giants. They've committed nearly $200 million this offseason, but have spread it around to seven players. The Giants announced today that they've signed right-handed reliever Luke Jackson to a two-year, $11.5M deal that includes a $2M buyout on a $7M club option for a third year. Jackson missed all of 2022 following Tommy John surgery, but figures to be back in the majors sometimes in the first few months of the 2023 season. Jackson had some ups and downs over his last three seasons in the majors, but overall was about 15-20 percent better than average during that span, with an above-average strikeout rate and well-above average ground ball rate. In Luke Jackson, the SF Giants are getting someone whose best pitch is a slider that he throws more than half the time. Jackson is similar to Camilo Doval in that way. The Giants' pitching staff overall figures to be one of the best in the majors at preventing homers and inducing ground balls. Now, the SF Giants must improve their infield defense. Infield defense was a major problem for the Giants in 2022, and so far they have yet to address it this offseason. They've signed some everyday-type outfielders in Mitch Haniger and Michael Confroto, which moves Joc Pederson out of the outfield, but in the infield the only major move was losing Evan Longoria, who was one of their better infield defenders. Nonetheless, once the Giants are able to improve their infield defense, the pitching staff begins to look formidable. The Giants' rotation is seven deep before accounting for top pitching prospect Kyle Harrison, and the extra arms from the rotation figure to slide into the 'pen. The Giants traded away Yunior Marte for LHP Erik Miller today, and so their 'pen projects as something like: Camilo Doval, Taylor Rogers, Brebbia, Tyler Rogers, Luke Jackson, Scott Alexander, and then starting candidates like Jakob Junis and Anthony DeSclafani.
