The San Francisco Giants are in free fall. They're playing absolutely horrendous baseball, and they've slipped to two games out of the NL's final wild card position. Something needs to change, and the Giants decided to (finally) promote hot-hitting infielder David Villar ahead of today's game against the Diamondbacks. It would be hard to play any worse than the SF Giants played on this homestand. They were outplayed in all aspects of the game against three teams that came in below .500. Simply put, the Giants do not look like a competitive team right now, and there's plenty of blame to go around. Farhan Zaidi did not do enough on the position player side this offseason. The Giants' older position players have not gotten the job done. Gabe Kapler's staff takes some blame for the team's miserable defense and recent hitting. Villar represents a change in the right direction. The Giants need some young players who could be a part of the future start to emerge for this team. Veterans like Evan Longoria, Brandon Belt, and Brandon Crawford simply don't have much of a future here. It's a bit of a problem that the Giants are now tied up to Darin Ruf and Tommy La Stella, who have also been significant disappointments so far in 2022. They need more players like Villar to join the roster and be given a real opportunity. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

SF Giants' position players falter in second straight mediocre month overall

The San Francisco Giants, surprisingly, had the NL's second-best team ERA in the month of June. Yet they only managed a 13-13 record, their second straight month of mediocre baseball. The Giants are currently on the outside looking in of the NL Wild Card picture, but they trail the final spot by just a single game. The Giants' June overall is evaluated. Carlos Rodón righted the ship in a major way, establishing himself as a legitimate Cy Young candidate. He was easily the Giants' best player this month. Not far behind him was Logan Webb, who has also had an excellent season. The bullpen was also good, led by Camilo Doval and John Brebbia. Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani really struggled in June, although DeSclafani only pitched 5.2 innings (but his ERA was near 20.00). It was the position players who were costly. Evan Longoria and Joc Pederson had strong months, but otherwise there wasn't much to write home about. Mike Yastrzemski cooled off in a major way, and Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford continued to be essentially non-factors. LaMonte Wade Jr. played in just one game in June, but thankfully he is now back. Donovan Walton has played a lot and been a net negative. Jason Vosler's somewhat surprising demotion is discussed as well. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Just when you thought it couldn't get any uglier... The San Francisco Giants played defense like a little league team in the third inning on Sunday against the Reds. Evan Longoria couldn't make a throw across the diamond to lead off the inning. Mike Yastrzemski threw to the wrong base. Austin Slater broke in on a ball that ended up bouncing off the warning track. And they weren't done for the day. Later in the Giants' embarrassing 10-3 loss to the Reds, their second series loss to the league's worst team, there was a ground ball to Brandon Belt. Pitcher Jarlín García was late covering the bag, and Belt threw behind him. The ball went then sat near the Reds dugout for far too much time while no one in a Giants jersey went to pick it up. A high school team would've probably played a better game defensively than the SF Giants did on Sunday. What is causing them to play so poorly defensively? What's staggering is that their defense was much better last year with basically the same players. Brandon Crawford, Darin Ruf, Yastrzemski, Thairo Estrada, and Belt have had the biggest drop-offs. Have the Giants taken their fans for granted? They could've done more in the offseason to bolster their team, but didn't. Is the experience stale at Oracle Park? These questions, written about today in The Athletic by Andrew Baggarly, are addressed on today's show. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

San Francisco Giants starter Alex Wood has a 5.05 ERA, among the worst among all pitchers in the game with at least 60 innings. Is it a mirage, or is the performance deserved? What should Giants fans expect from the lefty starter moving forward? Wood was a staple in the SF Giants' rotation last year, helping the team win 107 games, but it hasn't been smooth sailing so far this season—for Wood or the team. And what about that pesky bullpen? Tyler Rogers hasn't been the same guy. Neither has Jake McGee, José Álvarez, and many others. Ironically, John Brebbia, who struggled mightily for the Giants in 2021, has been arguably their best reliever in 2022. Camilo Doval has had his ups and downs. What can the Giants do to ensure better bullpen performance moving forward? Is there any prescedent for Giants president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi cutting ties with players on guaranteed deals? The SF Giants have had their share of roster crunches in 2022, and that figures to continue with LaMonte Wade Jr. back soon, and Luis González also likely coming back from a minor injury shortly thereafter. Giants fans have argued that underperforming veterans like McGee, Evan Longoria, and Tommy La Stella should be DFA candidates, but is that actually a realistic option at any point? Austin Wynns to the rescue! The San Francisco Giants catcher was a triple shy of the cycle, and his three-run homer in the second inning set the tone for the offense in a thrilling 12-10 win for the SF Giants. Wynns has been a fresh air ever since the Giants acquired him from the Phillies, but he wasn't the only offensive star last night. Mike Yastrzemski had a big bases-loaded double, Joc Pederson added a solo shot, and Wilmer Flores had a two-out, two-strike hit that drove in two runs in the ninth. Those runs proved to be essential, as Giants closer Camilo Doval surrendered a two-run homer to Matt Olson in the bottom of the inning. It wasn't all sunshine and roses, however. Brandon Crawford had an injury scare and came out of the game. He's day-to-day and is getting an MRI, but it looks like he was able to avoid a serious injury. Thairo Estrada made another critical error at a very bad time (although Evan Longoria probably should've made a different throw). And Anthony DeSclafani allowed five runs in three innings in his return from the 60-day injured list. To clear a spot on the major league roster, LHP José Álvarez was placed on the 15-day IL with back tightness. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

When should SF Giants fans worry about Brandon Crawford? He was their best overall player in 2021, racking up over six FanGraphs WAR and hitting at a clip that was almost 40% above the major league average. This year, he's been okay, but he hasn't come close to equaling last year's production. On the bright side for the Giants, Crawford is coming in significantly below his career BABIP and ISO, which he should be able to at least match when all is said and done. That's encouraging, given that he's been close to league average offensively despite those numbers being well below expectations. Defense has also been a bit of a struggle for Crawford, who was showing signs of slowing down prior to 2021. But then last year, he was great again. Can he get back to that level? Also discussed: with the impending roster crunch (LaMonte Wade Jr. getting closer to returning), is it a given that a promising young player like Luis González will have to be optioned? Or might the San Francisco Giants try to shed the contract of an under-performing older player like Darin Ruf, Evan Longoria, or Tommy La Stella? Wilmer Flores. Evan Longoria. Curt Casali. The San Francsico Giants rode clutch home runs from those three veterans to a resilient 5-4 win in Philadelphia. The offense was sputtering again until Flores' two-run shot tied it. We were still tied in the 9th when Longoria's solo blast gave the SF Giants the lead. And Casali's blast felt the biggest of them all, a two-run bomb that gave the Giants a two-run lead in the 10th. Logan Webb actually allowed three homers himself, but the damage was limited as they were all solo shots. Despite the three home runs allowed, Webb was brilliant in this game. He struck out 10 and walked none. Giants manager Gabe Kapler actually shook Webb's hand and told him he was coming out of the game after the 8th, but Webb talked his way into going back out there. It didn't work out, as Webb immediately allowed a game-tying homer to Kyle Schwarber, but Webb and the team at large appreciated Kapler's willingness to place trust in his young ace pitcher. Dom Leone and Camilo Doval were sharp the rest of the way. Donovan Walton had a particularly rough at-bat in the 10th. He took what should've been ball four, but continued to stand around the plate until the catcher asked if he might've swung. The home plate umpire checked, and the third base umpire said he did. None of that would've happened if Walton had just taken off for first base. He clearly didn't know the count, and it could've easily cost the Giants in a big way. Walton then chased way out of the zone of the next pitch for strike three, failing to advance the free runner placed at second base to begin each extra inning. Thankfully, the next man up Casali lifted a mammoth home run to left that saved the day. Fans have been asking why Walton has been playing over Thairo Estrada, and an explanation is provided on the show. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Tommy Pham SLAPPED Joc Pederson in the face prior to the San Francisco Giants' game on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds. Apparently, Pham held onto a grudge for months after he didn't agree with some of the things Pederson wrote in a fantasy football group chat late last year. Pham thought that Pederson was being shady with some rules, but Pederson says he was operating within them and that Pham was actually doing the same thing. Pham also says (and Pederson admits) he made fun of the Padres with a GIF late last season as the SF Giants and Dodgers fought over first place in the NL West and the Padres floundered. Pham took these incidents so poorly that he decided to hit Pederson in the face on Friday. Pederson did not fight back and said that "violence isn't the answer." Pham was suspended for three games by MLB. The Giants then went on to play an ugly series in Cincinnati. Their offense just could not get anything going pretty much all series, until they finally broke through with six runs with two outs in the 8th inning on Sunday. They were being no-hit through 6.2 innings until Thairo Estrada finally broke up the no-no. Evan Longoria delivered the big hit in the 8th, crushing a three-run homer to right that gave the Giants the lead. Luis González added a two-run double, and the Giants would go on to win the finale. Still, it was a rough series and the Giants have played relatively poorly over an extended stretch this month. Their team offense has overall been pretty good, however, with a 112 wRC+. Their pitching has under-performed their peripherals by a wide margin. Alex Cobb has been perhaps the unluckiest pitcher in baseball, but the results finally matched up with the peripherals with a very strong outing on Sunday. The SF Giants have a three-game lead over the final playoff spot and are five games over .500. Despite the poor play as of late, they appear to be in pretty good shape to improve over the remaining 70%+ of the 2022 season. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Mauricio Dubón was traded to the Houston Astros. The San Francisco Giants made the perhaps unpopular move because Dubón was out of minor league options, rosters shrunk from 28 to 26, and guys were getting healthy. Even after trading Dubón, the SF Giants will have another tough decision to make regarding the impending activation of Tommy La Stella. Last year wasn't the best of La Stella. When he's right, he brings a rare combination of contact and power. La Stella owns a 125 wRC+ against righties since the 2019 season, with a K% under 10 and ISO near .200. He should be a valuable part of the Giants' offense, but it won't necessarily be easy to add him to the major league roster. The Giants will either have to option popular outfielder Luis González, who's done nothing but hit since being called up to replace the injured Steven Duggar, or else they'll have to option a pitcher and have 14 positions players and 12 pitchers. Based on past arrangements, they seem to prefer to carry as many pitchers as possible. Things were mostly ugly for the Giants on Sunday Night Baseball in a blowout loss, but they took a turn for the better late in the game. González took the mound and threw some entertaining eephus pitches. In the top of the 9th, legendary first baseman Albert Pujols took the mound for St. Louis. González launched a three-run homer against Pujols, and Joey Bart hit a solo shot as well. Evan Longoria singled, and asked for the baseball. It was a lighthearted finish to a frustrating game and series. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Mauricio Dubón says "not to fast" to his critics. Carlos Rodón punches out 12 Rockies in six innings. Yes indeed, the San Francisco Giants had a good night as they won their third straight game. Now they must deal with a looming roster crunch. Dubón's role is to hit left-handed pitching, and he's done that consistently since joining the Giants. He hasn't had a chance to show it off much this year, as the SF Giants have almost exclusively faced right-handed starters. In the past few games, however, Dubón has started against lefties and homered both times. His role looks fairly secure, although the Giants will need to make corresponding moves when they activate Evan Longoria and Tommy La Stella. Longoria is in San Francisco and ready to be activated. The only player it makes sense to option is Luis González, but he doesn't seem to deserve it. They could option a pitcher and go with 14 positions players against 12 pitchers, but then they'll certainly need to make a move on the position player side when La Stella is ready. They're in a bit of a bind, and a trade is a possibility to help them sort it out. Dubón and Thairo Estrada are among many Giants who cannot be optioned, so it's difficult to tell how they will proceed. Joey Bart was pinch hit for with the bases loaded and one out, with the Giants leading 5-2. Joc Pederson came in to hit in his place, and lifted a sac fly that extended the Giants' lead. It's unclear exactly how Bart felt about being lifted in that situation, but he didn't appear to be thrilled in the dugout. He walked out with his catchers' gear as the at-bat was starting. Later, however, he could be seen cheering in the dugout. Bart has struck out in over 44% of his plate appearances this year, and that was a situation when they couldn't live with a high probability of a K. Two total runs in two games isn't going to cut it. The San Francisco Giants were swept by the Dodgers in emphatic fashion in this two-game series—how concerned should we be about the lifeless offense? Yes, the Dodgers' pitching was fantastic. Yes, the SF Giants are missing several key players. But still, there is some concern about an offensive unit that has more or less hovered around league average so far in 2022. Part of it is the baseball: it truly appears that this baseball isn't flying as well as the ball in recent years, and it's affecting all teams, including the Giants. It was good to have Mike Yastrzemski and Joc Pederson back in the lineup yesterday, but they didn't really factor into the offense. Still, with time, they should be able to help the team get back on track. The Giants have lost five of their last six games. They've scored 14 more runs through 24 games this year than they did last year. The DH spot helps, but if anything that's a wash. LaMonte Wade Jr. could return as soon as tonight. Evan Longoria and Tommy La Stella have begun rehab assignments. Brandon Belt will be back as soon as he can return two negative Covid tests. The Giants are totally banged up, but it's a long season and they should have plenty of time to return to full strength (or something close to it) and get on a roll. At 14-10, they're only one win worse than the 2021 team that went on to win a franchise-record 107 games. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants' lineup featured Mauricio Dubón, Kevin Padlo, and Luke Williams. The Dodgers' lineup had Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Trea Turner at the top. Injuries and Covid-19 have ravaged the Giants in recent weeks, and it was on full display in the 3-1 loss on Tuesday. Carlos Rodón pitched well, but Julio Urias was just a bit better. The SF Giants' lineup was different in part by design, as they were finally facing a left-handed starter for the first time in ages. Austin Slater at the top was no surprise, and Dubón has swung the bat pretty well all year with very little to show for it. Padlo was recently acquired in a trade and had just hit three home runs in a game for Triple-A Sacramento. Thankfully, reinforcements are on the way. Mike Yastrzemski, who's been out since testing positive for Covid in Washington, DC, could be back tonight. Joc Pederson was able to pinch hit last night and could be back in the lineup tonight. LaMonte Wade Jr.'s return is imminent. Tommy La Stella and Evan Longoria began rehab assignments last night. Through it all, the Giants still have a solid 14-9 record with the fourth-best run differential in baseball. It's hard to win a series when you allow 28 runs on 45 hits. That's over nine runs per game—yikes! The San Francisco Giants are dealing with a huge amount of injuries and a Covid outbreak, but that really wasn't why they got blown out by the Nationals over the weekend. Chalk the series loss up to uncharacteristically poor pitching. Alex Wood and Alex Cobb failed to set the tone in each of their starts, putting the Giants in big early holes. Cobb was returning off the injured list after missing a couple of starts with a groin injury. But yes, the Giants look largely unfamiliar due to all of their injuries and the Covid outbreak. Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt, Dom Leone, and Zack Littell have tested positive for Covid-19. LaMonte Wade Jr., Evan Longoria, Tommy La Stella, and Anthony DeSclafani remain on the injured list. They're missing about 10 guys from their active roster who would ordinarily be in there. As a result, we're seeing a lot of the likes of Luis González (who's done a really nice job), Jason Krizan, Mike Ford (just acquired in a trade in response to all of the players on the IL), and Jason Vosler. Joc Pederson and Austin Slater are also banged up, but thankfully not on the IL. Despite it all, the Giants' hitting was not the problem this weekend, and hasn't been a problem all season. They're scoring the most runs per game in all of baseball (5.0), and scored six runs per game in this series. It was a weird one, but the Giants have no choice but to turn the page, try to get healthy, and get ready to face the Dodgers on Tuesday. Are the SF Giants doomed without Evan Longoia, LaMonte Wade Jr.?

Late Night LaMonte has an injured knee. Evan Longoria, the Giants' starting third baseman, will miss at least six weeks following finger surgery. Are the Giants completely doomed? Actually, when Longoria missed more than two months last season, the Giants went 38-20 in his absence. This is a team built on depth, and Wilmer Flores is an underrated substitute at third base. His defense was surprisingly adequate last season (after a disastrous showing in 2020), and his bat more than held his own when Longoria went down. In the outfield, Wade's injury opens the door for Steven Duggar, who looked destined for another Triple-A assignment to begin 2022. Trades and free-agent signings should remain in play as well. How about the Tampa Bay Rays' Vidal Bruján? He's an explosive athlete with electric speed, but only a contact oriented hitter who may not develop game-chaning power. So what? The Giants could absolutely use a player like that, and he's a bit blocked on the Rays' roster. Part of a deal could involve taking on the roughly $14.7 million owed to Kevin Kiermaier. Just a thought. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

SF Giants' LaMonte Wade Jr., Evan Longoria to miss Opening Day with injuries

A San Francisco Giants offense that was already looking questionable is without two of its likely Opening Day starters. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Evan Longoria will start the season on the injured list. Where should the Giants go from here? Neither injury looks to be extremely serious, with Longoria having a minor surgery on his right index finger that will lead to him immobilizing the finger for at least 10 days. Wade Jr. has swelling and a bone bruise in his knee, and he will be re-evaluated in 10 days. It's not like the Giants to make big, reactionary moves in a panic, so don't expect major changes because of these injuries. However, it's clear that the Giants' depth is already being stretched thin and the season hasn't even started. Michael Conforto is still a free agent, José Ramírez may be available in a trade, and there are several other options the Giants could turn to in order to fill these voids. Also discussed is the announcement that Logan Webb will be the Giants' Opening Day starter. For Webb, he joins other homegrown starters such as Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, and Matt Cain to get the Opening Day nod. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Does Michael Conforto still make sense for the San Francisco Giants?

For an SF Giants team in need of more thump, why not Michael Conforto? Yes, he would add to an already crowded left-handed outfield mix, but the addition of the DH in the National League should make the fit possible. LaMonte Wade Jr. could play left, Mike Yastrzemski could play center, and Conforto could play right against right-handed pitching. This would allow Joc Pederson so slide into the DH spot on most days against righties. Darin Ruf might not get his opportunity to be an everyday player right away, but is that really such a bad thing? He would be their top weapon off the bench every single night, and he would hit in the middle of the lineup every time they face a lefty. Against lefties, Ruf could start in left, Austin Slater in center, and Conforto in right (as one of the Giants' few everyday players, along with Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Evan Longoria). ESPN predicted when the offseason began that Conforto would command a three-year, $51 million deal, which host Ben Kaspick thinks is extremely reasonable for a player of his caliber, particularly given that he's just 29 years old. Ben thinks a deal like that with multiple opt outs could make sense for both sides. A one-year deal is also a possibility at this point for Conforto, who has some questions about his vaccination status, which could be holding up his market. Teams in the AL East are wary of signing unvaccinated players, since they won't be allowed to travel to Toronto under current Canadian law. One more consideration: Conforto rejected the qualifying offer from the Mets, meaning he would cost the Giants their second-highest draft pick in 2022 (roughly 65th overall). Ben thinks that shouldn't be prohibitive and that Conforto should still be a priority. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Life without Longoria. Is it time for the San Francisco Giants to figure out what comes next at third base? Evan Longoria is finally entering the last year of his deal that the Giants inherited in a trade, and the future at the position is murky. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Now that Longoria has just one year left on his deal, is it possible for the Giants to stop thinking of him as an unmovable contract? Can we stop trying to find platoon partners for him and instead trade for/sign another cheaper and/or better long-term solution? How likely is it that I'll be able to use the current bookings I have for my kids & I to go watch Spring Training the 1st weekend in March? Alex Pavlovic mentioned in a recent article that the Giants could look to add a LEFT handed bat at DH like Kyle Schwarber or Joc Pederson. Can the idea make sense if they also add a righty as well?
