EP 44: How David Gorman overcame a 5 year battle with cocaine addiction

Today's conversation is nothing short of incredible. I'm joined by David Gorman, a man who has completely transformed his life after years of struggle.David grew up in Coolock in a loving home with a happy childhood, but by 23, he had fallen into the grip of cocaine addiction—a battle that consumed the next five years of his life.At his lowest, David faced unimaginable hardship. He lost 30kg, endured drug-induced psychosis, accumulated €40,000 in debt, and struggled with suicidal thoughts. One night, he found himself sitting on a motorway, ready to end it all.Desperate for change, he moved to Denmark, but his addiction only deepened. It wasn't until he finally got clean and relocated to Sweden that his true recovery began. Now, 3.5 years sober, David has rebuilt his life in extraordinary ways.Today, he works as a supervisor at the very organization that once helped him, guiding young adults impacted by addiction. He's also built a thriving online coaching business, using his powerful story to inspire and support others on their own journeys to recovery. This conversation is raw, real, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Let's get into it.Follow David:Instagram Online Coaching Application Form Tik Tok Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

David's whole life was football, it was everything to him. So when a knee injury put an end to that, David felt his whole life purpose was gone. Boredom turned into nights out, nights out turned into the odd line, and the odd line turned into a cocaine addiction with a dept at one point of nearly €30,000. David now 10 months sober credits his mental strength his family especially his mother. Sea swims, ice baths and finally a new community keeping him on the straight and narrow. Jon David Gorman has been playing music his entire life. His father was a guitar player and Jon David remembers listening to his dad play when he was very young. His father unfortunately passed soon after, and his mother Tara Gorman, goddess of Awesomeness and co-founder of Planetary Gigs Society, began hosting Music Nights at their house practically every month. The idea was to invite anyone who wanted to come play music at the Gorman house, and many fine and talented musicians routinely showed up. Jon David considered himself very lucky and was grateful for the Music Nights with so many ‘super encouraging' friendly musicians who helped him learn to play. He first took guitar lessons, then saxophone in 4th grade, before settling on bass as his main instrument. The Music Nights became like organic lessons, learning tips here, chords there. Music Nights taught him to be a very versatile player. He says music is powerful because it conveys emotions and ‘music builds empathy.' Jon David wants to use music to help build community. He got some good advice at one point, to learn a song that means something and play it, and he tries to follow that advice. He believes music is just as worth it as learning any other language.
