Ellen Rae Greenberg was found dead in her apartment on January 26 2011. She was 27 years old and was engaged to be married to Samuel Goldberg. Goldberg called 911 claiming he found Ellen unresponsive. Josh and Sandee Greenberg gave birth to their one and only child a daughter they named Ellen Rae Greenberg on June 23rd, 1983. It wasn't until 9 years later in 1994 that the family of three decided to move to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where Ellen later attended Susquehanna Township middle school. After graduating high school, she attended Penn State graduating with a major in communications later realizing that was not the path for her, so she decided to attend Temple University in order to earn her teaching credentials. She later obtained a job teaching the first grade at Juniata Park Academy located in Philadelphia. By January of 2011, she was loving being a teacher and was even engaged to be married that same year although, that day would never come for Ellen.

On Wednesday, January 26th of 2011, 27-year-old Ellen Greenberg is found with 20 jab wounds to her head, neck and chest, including one with the sharp object still lodged in it. Her fiancé, 28-year-old Sam Goldberg, finds her and immediately begins stating that Ellen must have done this to herself. On January 26th of 2011, Ellen Rae Greenberg left work early as a blizzard was going to hit Philadelphia.  She was a first-grade teacher and she waited until all her students had left before she headed out and she gassed up her vehicle on the way home.  She got back to her apartment that she shared with her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, who was a TV producer for NBC.  Sam went to the gym for roughly 45 minutes and when he got back, the apartment door was locked with the swing latch, and he couldn't get in. When he entered the apartment, he found Ellen, dead, sitting against the cabinets on the kitchen floor.  She had 20 stab wounds and ten of them were to her back and neck and there were eleven bruises in various stages of resolution.  Since Sam said the door was locked and there was really no way for someone to flee the apartment, this was ultimately ruled a suicide.  There was a small amount of time that the medical examiner had this listed as a homicide, but after a secret meeting with the police, it was changed to suicide and the case was closed. On January 26th 2011,  27-year-old schoolteacher Ellen Rae Greenberg was found dead in the kitchen of her Philadelphia loft. Ellen's fiancé, Sam Goldberg, allegedly came home from the gym to find the door locked from the inside. When there was no answer from Ellen, Sam broke the door down and discovered her lifeless body inside, with a knife protruding from her chest. Ellen suffered a total of 20 stab wounds, half of which were delivered to the back of her neck and head. Curiously, Ellen's death was declared a suicide. Ellen Rae Greenberg seemed to have it all.  She was beautiful, successful, ambitious and engaged to the man of her dreams.   In January 2011, her partner Sam left their apartment and went to the gym in their complex.  When he came back under an hour later, the apartment door was allegedly bolted from the inside and he could not get in.  He frantically tried to contact Ellen and he ended up breaking down the door.   Inside, he found Ellen dead in their kitchen, with a knife sticking out of her chest.  She had more than 20 stab wounds, including many to the back of her head and neck.   Ellen's death ended up being determined a suicide.  Her family have always disputed this and have pushed for over a decade for it to be reclassified.  In September 2022, the investigation into Ellen's death was reopened.
