When Brooklyn borough president, Eric Adams, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, he refused to resign himself to a life of medication and mere symptom management. Putting on his ex-cop detective hat, he dug deep for root cause solutions and discovered Whole Food Plant Based nutrition. A couple months into this new diet, his diabetes was reversed, including vision loss! Since then, Eric is on a mission to bring the power of food as healing medicine to Brooklyn and New York City residents. In this inspiring episode, Eric shares his journey overcoming diabetes and why he is now a passionate advocate of plant-based nutrition for the health of our bodies and our planet. You can learn more Eric and his story here. For the past three decades, Eric L. Adams has served the residents of Brooklyn as borough president, state senator, police officer, and coalition builder. In honor of Black History Month, Brooklyn’s Borough President, Hon. Eric L. Adams, sat down with award-winning Caribbean podcaster Jay Blessed in a rare conversation on his prismatic personal life, controversial career as a 22-year NYPD veteran, challenging political rise and his passionate pursuit to be the next Mayor of New York City. Despite the traumatic experience of being innocently arrested and beaten by cops at 15 years old, along with his younger brother, Adams chose to become an NYPD officer to be the change he wanted to see in his community, by using his voice and service as a form of therapy. The 2021 NYC Mayoral Candidate and formidable frontrunner shares his vulnerability in this unconventional and transparent podcast interview. Though some might consider him pugnacious, controversial and a firebrand, Adams shares that his dedication towards being a rebellious public servant has been deeply rooted in disrupting and correcting unfair, unjust and unhealthy societal norms. Jay Blessed skillfully leads this 63 minute light-hearted yet complex conversation, packed with raw emotions and covering a range of topics such as: Mental Health, Mindfulness, Police Brutality, Public Safety, Immigration Issues and Reform, Voting Rights, Diabetes, Food Justice, School Nutrition, Plant-Based Health, African American Men’s Health. Affordable Housing, Gentrification, Real Estate Fraud, Homelessness, Women’s Rights, Women’s Equal Pay, Corruption Scandals, Race-Based Brutality, Caribbean-American Issues. Adams brings his receipts as he declares, “I didn’t go into the police department because I wanted to, I went into the police department because I was called to. I’m not running for Mayor because I want to, I’m running for Mayor because I’m called to!” Get some laughs, learn something new and get to know the man behind the titles, as we get inside the head of the Borough President and, possibly, next Mayor of New York City! Health is the cornerstone of prosperity. If our body isn’t functioning properly, we can’t do anything, we can’t lead joyful lives. We normalize aches and pains, bloating, exhaustion, headaches, ill-health - all the things caused by our lifestyle. We come to believe that to be human means to get progressively sicker every year. That simply isn’t true. There’s no reason we can’t be vibrant and active well into our 90’s. Today’s guest is a perfect example. Eric L. Adams is a former Democratic State Senator and police officer, and current Borough President of Brooklyn and social justice warrior. He knows first-hand how powerful a simple lifestyle change can be. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with advanced Type 2 Diabetes. He had stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, permanent nerve damage to his hands and feet, and had lost sight in his right eye. Specialists told him that because diabetes ran in his family, he was inevitably heading towards kidney failure, blindness and possible foot amputation. So he made a change. After reading Dr Greger’s How Not To Die (check out Episode 214), and watching Forks over Knives, he cleaned out his kitchen cupboards and swapped his Standard American Diet for a whole foods plant-based diet. Just 3 weeks later, his vision cleared up, his stomach ulcers disappeared, and the nerve damage was reversed. A complete turn-around. Now, Eric is determined to empower people to heal themselves. Because after all, there’s no such thing as prosperity without a healthy community. He’s teamed up with schools to teach children to grow food, and runs initiatives like Meatless Mondays and 10-day challenges for people suffering with disease, as well as hosting events to demystify veganism. But perhaps the most exciting initiative is what’s happening at Bellevue hospital. The first ever plant-based unit will be set up, run by functional medicine doctors, dietitians and nutritionists to show patients how to heal themselves, reverse disease and come off their prescription meds with a whole-food plant-based diet. Could this model be rolled out on a global scale? This could change the conversation around medicine for good. The future’s looking bright! Check out Eric’s Instagram to learn more!
