They discuss how parents can model positive behaviours, keep conversations about food neutral rather than moralistic, allow children pleasure in eating, handle picky eating, encourage movement joyfully, and more. Listeners can expect to gain insight into fostering body acceptance and food freedom for the next generation. Key Discussion Points: - How parents can support children in having a healthy relationship with food and bodies through positive modeling and neutral, non-judgmental communication (00:07:00) - Setting reasonable limits around certain charged "trigger" foods if needed, while still allowing pleasure and food freedom (00:17:46) - Letting kids tune into their bodies' natural signals and self-regulation abilities around eating (00:23:53) - Making physical movement a fun, family-oriented activity based on the child's natural temperament (00:35:27) - Signs that a child is struggling with food/body image issues and how to intervene and get professional support (00:36:43) Key Quotes: "I think the more neutral and joyful and relaxed we can be around food with children, the better." (00:07:15) "If the child is jumping up and down and saying, I want ice cream, to just say, we're not going to have ice cream tonight, but we might have it later this week. And just nonchalantly, not not with a lot of emotion." (00:17:46) "I would say that reaching out and letting them know that you are concerned is really, really important...the sooner, the better to actually let someone know that you're concerned, and potentially bring in some help." Plant-based foods have remarkable healing properties, but many physicians overlook them when consulting with families about their health and wellness. Physicians like Dr. Yami Cazorla-Lancaster, Board-Certified Pediatrician and Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician, are changing the face of pediatrics with a plant-powered approach. Dr. Yami is a traditionally trained pediatrician bridging the gap between using conventional medicine to treat serious illnesses while also promoting the healing power of food through holistic plant-based diets. In her own home, her family lives a vegan lifestyle and eats a vegan diet. She shares her insights on the profound impact of plant-based diets on gut health and overall well-being and debunks the concept of kids' menus. Instead, Dr. Yami encourages parents to embrace a more diverse and nutrient-rich approach to feeding their children, including lots of fruits and veggies. She also delves into how a child's dietary habits can predict their adult choices, and how even a fetus' exposure to flavors in the womb shapes their palate. In this episode, Dr. Yami talks to Jen about the transformative potential of plant-based diets for kids' health, the impact of plant-based foods on the gut, and myths about dairy. Key Takeaways [01:47] - Dr. Yami's passion for helping her patients live a long, healthy life. [03:17] - How Dr. Yami feels about kids' menus. Having a healthy relationship with food is so important for our mental health, but it also affects our physical health. Tune in to hear our guest expert, a board certified pediatrician, share strategies and tips to keep you feeling amazing! Keeping a positive food relationship when you are trying to make dietary changes can be challenging, even when you are trying to eat a more plant-based diet. The online diet world is tough to navigate so leaning on experts to guide the way is really important! Dr. Yami is a board-certified pediatrician, certified lifestyle medicine physician, national board-certified health and wellness coach, author and international speaker. She is a passionate promoter of healthy lifestyles, especially the power of plant-based diets for the prevention of chronic disease. She founded VeggieFitKids.com where she provides information on plant-based diets for children. Definition of a Healthy Food Relationship While the meaning of a healthy relationship with food will be different for each person, it's really important that we strive towards having one. According to Dr. Yami, her healthy relationship with food is defined as: One the supports health and well-being and fuels the body but also fits into ones lifestyle, culture, brings pleasure and is never associated with judgement, guilt or shame. The journey and end result may morph and change as we go through life, but the main thing to focus on is that you are moving forward and not falling into traps that diet culture can bring. Why a Healthy Food Relationship is Important In the US, 70% of children's calories come from ultra processed foods. Let that sink in a bit. Offering a diet rich in all the nutrients is so important for a child's growing body. And doing so in a way that helps guide them into a healthy food relationship is just as important. By the age of 5 children have already unlearned tuning into their bodies. This is due to many things, but parents trying to get their children to eat more, finish their meal, clean their plates, etc is a big contributer. If we don't give our children opportunities to be in tune with their own body cues with relation to food is very damaging. They won't be able to tell when they are hungry, full, or even honor their body's cravings (which can be a signal they need a certain nutrient). If children don't have these self help skills when they become adults, it can lead to a range of disordered eating. Which then moves from generation to generation. However, if we help guide our children when it comes to food, we allow them to become adults with a positive relationship to food. What Causes a Bad Relationship with Food? There are many reasons why one would create a negative relationship with food. It generally stems from the past and their experiences. One reason could be family environment, meaning how their family growing up viewed food and handled eating. It could be comments about appearance, weight, eating habits, etc. For example, telling our kids that we can't eat birthday cake, ice cream or candy can trigger a false fear surrounding that food. This restricting of certain foods can affect the brain and trigger binging when they come into contact with that food again.
Do you ever worry about whether or not your children are getting adequate nutrition from the food they are eating? Or are you a concerned parent now that your child has chosen to become vegetarian? In this episode of me&my health up we discuss family nutrition with Pediatrician Dr. Yami. We explore the topics of from disordered to intuitive eating. From traditional western diets to more plant based diets. Early on in my plant-based journey I had several conversation with family and friends about other kids who were eating super healthy at home but went hog wild whenever they they were at a birthday party or other activity where they had access to processed foods they didn't get at home. They observed that kids hadn't learned to regulate themselves and the underlying message I felt was that it was just better to have all the candy and processed foods at home so kids could learn. I wrestled with the right approach here for years. I knew that processed food companies had teams of very smart scientists working to find a food's bliss point and make it hard to stop eating. But I also wanted my kids to have a healthy relationship around food and frankly didn't want to be embarrassed by a kid going crazy when in public! I began looking into Intuitive Eating and hoping I could find some takeaways that would help me figure it out. But it wasn't until I found Dr. Yami Carzola-Lancaster's book, A Parent's Guide to Intuitive Eating: How to Raise Kids Who Love to Eat Healthy that I finally found information that helped me find the right balance in teaching my kids about the power of healthy food as well as giving them the freedom to navigate their own food choices. It is such an honor to have Dr. Yami join us today and I think you are going to learn so much from her. Dr. Yami is a plant-based, board certified pediatrician, certified lifestyle medicine physician and host of the popular veggie doctor radio podcast. She is the author of A Parent's Guide to Intuitive Eating: How to Raise Kids Who Love to Eat Healthy, mother of 2 and spent her summers in Panama with her grandparents on their cattle farm. Having started her first doctor-prescribed diet at the age of 9, she understands what it's like for parents and children to worry about and struggle with health and weight and she has dedicated her life to helping families give their kids the healthiest start they can. In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I have lively conversation with Drs. Ayesha and Dean Sherzai about their newest book, The 30-Day Alzheimer’s Solution and what they want us to know about the brain right now. About featured guest: A unique husband and wife team on the cutting edge of brain science, Dr. Dean and Dr. Ayesha Sherzai are dedicated to educating people on the simple steps to long-term health and wellness through their work as Directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Health, with patients, as well as through online writing, videos, and books. There is a tsunami of diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease permeating our culture. In our own communities and families, we all have known at least one person suffering from these illnesses and in many cases seen the fallout first-hand. There is no treatment for these diseases, and the emotional, financial and social burden is immense. These diseases are thieves, stealing time, money and ravaging the minds of our loved ones. The Sherzais see scientists and physicians working furiously to find a cure for these diseases, and in this frantic race against time somehow, the big picture is usually lost among the molecules and chemicals related to the diseases. As Co-Directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, the Sherzais, through research and their extensive collective medical backgrounds, work to demystify the steps to achieving long-term brain health and the prevention of devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. On March 23rd, 2020, the Sherzais are launching their newest book, The 30-Day Alzheimer’s Solution, a brain-health conscious cookbook and lifestyle program grounded in rigorous science and explained simply with anecdotes, recipes, and actionable steps. In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I check in with Dr. Laurie Marbas and we talk about her amazing service, Plant-Based Telehealth and her dreams for the future. About featured guest: Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA is a double board certified family medicine and lifestyle medicine physician, who has been utilizing food as medicine since 2012. Previously, she created a new medical model combining the power of nutrient-dense foods and intensive clinical psychological therapy to treat not only food addiction but also chronic disease. She was the first Managing Editor for the Plantrician Project’s International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention. The journal is focused on bringing plant-based research to the forefront of modern medicine and to the general public. She is also co-founder of Healthy Human Revolution, whose mission is to provide resources that will empower individuals with the knowledge, tools, and mindset to successfully adopt and sustain a whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diet. She is also the co-founder of Plant Based TeleHealth focused on the prevention and reversal of chronic disease utilizing lifestyle medicine. This new service provides access to plant-based lifestyle medicine across the United States. She is currently holds 48 state medical licenses (plus DC) across the United States with the last few pending. In Colorado, Laurie persuaded a large hospital to create a lifestyle medicine program centered around a WFPB diet, the program showed resounding success. At another hospital, she conducted a one-month study of 26 employees on a WFPB diet. All employees were fed from the hospital’s kitchen, and each individual experienced improved health. She has spoken at the Golden VegFest in Colorado, the International Plant-based Nutrition Healthcare Conference, and other venues teaching about the value of the WFPB diet. Laurie received her dual degrees (MD and MBA) from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and TTU School of Business. She was awarded the Texas Tech University School of Medicine Gold Headed Cane Award, a symbol for excellence in the art of medicine and the care of patients. She wrote seven books while in medical school, six of which were in a series called “Visual Mnemonics.” These books used cartoons to help people memorize vast amounts of information—a system that helped her personally when she was a mom attending medical school. As a United States Air Force veteran, she served in the Middle East and South America. She is also a wife, mom of three grown children, host of the Healthy Human Revolution podcast, author, speaker, and avid runner. DR.
