New Yorkers speak out on dangers of 5G towers being put up in their neighborhoods. Question is, will the City Council listen? Do our local politicians have the power to even stop the 5G towers from being put up? Americans for Responsible Technology (ART) contends that HR 3557 is a federal bill that will make it difficult for local governments to stop the erecting of more 5G towers. On June 3, 2023, a hearing took place in New York City before the City Council during which many NYC residents spoke out about 32-foot jumbo 5G towers being erected in their neighborhoods. Many complained of serious health effects. Some said they needed to leave their homes due to health concerns. Since we've known for decades now--long before 5G, 4G, or even 3G--that over exposure to EMF (electromagnetic frequency) radiation can be harmful, why are we still needing to explain it to our politicians or even to our friends and neighbors--many of whom will still accuse us of being "conspiracy theorists"? How can we stop this insanity when protesting and speaking out at hearings doesn't seem to work? Will the voices heard during this NY City Council hearing make a difference, or will the PTB (Powers That Be) just continue installing more towers anyhow? What then? In Buffalo, NY, the mad construction work continues. Something is being installed underneath the roads. Hmm... I wonder what it could be... By the way, in case you are wondering, I am a proud conspiracy theorist! Yep, conspiracies abound. That's just how power works. Once people get power, they get together with others who also have power and they all conspire together to maintain their power and status. Why is that hard for some people to believe? We need a term to describe the naive and politically uneducated. How about "Naivete Theorist"? Or maybe "Gullibility Enthusiast"? Are you a "Trust the Science Theorist? A "Fauci Afficianado"? "Celebrity Pseudo-Science Addict"? A "Fauci Fool"? Friends, we need to push back against the anti-conspiracy nuts and come up with a term to describe them because they are the crazy ones. I can't think of anything too clever right now, but we'll think of something. Am I a conspiracy theorist? Uh no. You are an Authority Truster? Am I an antivaxxer? Naw, I'm an anti-authoritarian. I will not comply! Not I! The transcript of the NYC hearing is available thanks to Environmental Health Trust (EHTrust.org) at https://ehtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/Hearing-Transcript.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au-1JQxfMqk Americans for Responsible Technology's website is: https://www.americansforresponsibletech.org #oym #podcast #nyc #5g --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/occupyyourmind/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/occupyyourmind/support

On this week's show, I welcome Sharon Ward to the show. Sharon is the Senior Policy Advisor for the Education Law Center, a statewide nonprofit legal services and advocacy organization that works to secure quality education for Pennsylvania children with an emphasis on students who are most underserved. She has worked for 30 years, inside and outside of government, to secure quality schools, affordable health care, and people-serving budget priorities and to empower advocates to work for economic and social justice. We'll be talking about the ongoing attempts by school boards across the country to ban books, limit teachers' ability to provide welcoming environments to LGBTQ students, and enact extremist agendas in our schools. Last week the ACLU of PA filed a lawsuit against Central Bucks School District for creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ students and the Pennridge School District seems like it wants a lawsuit of its own as it bans books, limits expression, and demands schools be stripped of Pride flags. We'll talk with Sharon Ward about the work of the Education Law Center in defending the rights of ALL students and the legal hot water Bucks County Schools find themselves in. Sharon served two terms on the Albany, NY City Council, directed Governor Tom Wolf's Budget Office and led a government-wide transformation initiative to help state agencies use technology, data, collaboration, and social policy innovation to deliver better and quicker services to Pennsylvanians. She is the founding director of the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center; Pennsylvania's premier progressive policy think tank and led the fight for an equitable state tax system. She has served as an advisor on state legislation, policy, and advocacy for the School District of Philadelphia, the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, the Impact Project, Education Voters of Pennsylvania, the Voter Project, and the Keystone Research Center. Oh we mean BANNED.  The Church of Stop Shopping and The Black Institute helped ban the carcinogenic pesticide RoundUp from NYC parks. On Earth Day, the NY City Council unanimously banned this poison. 1,700 parks and 30,000 acres of greenery are filling up with children and picnics and lovers and joggers and birdwatchers. Now they won’t have to risk getting cancer. (Monsanto invented Agent Orange, Bayer manufactured Zyklon B gas and ran a slave-labor factory at Auschwitz). Hopefully throughout this country and the world these corporations will be sidelined by fines, jury awards, class actions by cancer victims. Hopefully they will be controlled by governments that work for the health of people.

Melissa and Erik go on to talk about when and how they first join Stonewall Democrats. Erik describes what it was like working for Christine Quinn, former speaker of the NYC Council.Segment 3Melissa talks about what it was like to run for her different office positions, including her run for Assembly in 2018, and what really motivated her to represent the LGBTQ community. Erik, in turn, talks about his experience helping run specific campaigns under Christine Quinn and his own, detailing work environments, personal anecdotes with discrimination, and learning from policies that passed and didn’t pass.Segment 4Erik describes how he became Chief of Staff for Corey Johnson and back to City Hall. Following this, Melissa muses on the issues she’s been committed to and worked for over the years and if they’ve changed at all. Erik, too, thinks on how issues, policies, and culture have changed and what he has observed over the years.
