Seed Money
What Investors Really Look For w/ Mike Sherbakov

Seed Money

Many founders have a killer product, a passionate team, and traction, but they don't realize that investors are really betting on THEM. The truth is, your projections don't need to be perfect, your deck doesn't need to be perfect. But you need to do the things that most people won't do to stand out. You need to show that you are strategic, thoughtful, and aligned with your growth narrative. In this episode, we dive into what actually matters to investors and how early-stage companies can use financial storytelling to build trust and get funded. I'm joined by Mike Sherbakov, former Marine, serial entrepreneur, and General Partner at The Veteran Fund, an early-stage venture firm investing in founders from the military community. We talk about how founders should approach pitching investors at the seed stage, how different industries require different metrics, and why, at the end of the day, investors are betting on the founder, not just the numbers. Topics Covered: Why veterans make great founders   How The Veteran Fund evaluates early-stage opportunities How to project your financials without a finance background Why entrepreneurship isn't for everyone (and how to know it's for you) Top tools and resources for startup benchmarks   Guest Bio Mike Sherbakov is the CEO of Greatness Ventures, supporting impact-driven leaders and brands. He has led the business accelerator to thousands of investor members and hundreds of companies in their impact portfolio. Their venture philanthropy arm has built homes in underdeveloped communities since 2014 and continues to lead impact trips open for the community to join. He serves as General Partner at The Veteran Fund, a pre-seed venture capital fund in Silicon Valley, and Director of San Diego's Founder Institute, the largest early-stage startup accelerator in the world. Mike has previously founded three startups (HMS Fitness, Karuna Towels, Greatness Media), helped grow two companies from 0 to $ 20 M+ valuations (Wildfire and NurishMe), and consulted with large companies including Fitbit, lululemon athletica, Equinox, and Qualcomm. He served on active duty as a United States Marine, graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Diego State University, has traveled to 58 countries and counting, and believes that our greatness is not what we have but what we give. This isn't exactly the radical message one would expect from a primary physician from Columbia, Maryland. But according to Dr Andy Lazris, co-author of A Return to Healing, Big Pharma wields an iron grip on the American healthcare system. And it's only by aggressively challenging the control of the pharmaceutical industry, Lazris says, that we can begin to reform the system. Lazris discusses how pharmaceutical companies heavily influence healthcare through funding medical organizations, research, and federal agencies like the CDC and FDA. He advocates for a return to patient-centered medicine with longer appointment times and less emphasis on unnecessary tests and medications. He suggests three core reforms: removing pharmaceutical influence from federal agencies, changing Medicare reimbursement to favor primary care over procedures, and increasing Medicare funding for primary care residency programs. Interestingly, Lazris views RFK Jr.'s health agency cuts as chaotic, but potentially beneficial.Five Key Takeaways from Andy Lazris's Interview* Pharmaceutical Industry Influence: The pharmaceutical industry has excessive influence over healthcare, including federal agencies (CDC, FDA), medical associations, academic research, and treatment protocols, prioritizing profit over patient wellbeing.* Primary Care Crisis: Primary care physicians are a "dying breed" despite their importance, as they face burnout from administrative burdens, quality metrics, protocol constraints, and insufficient time with patients.* Protocol-Driven Medicine: Doctors are increasingly forced to follow standardized protocols and quality indicators rather than providing individualized care, with financial penalties for not adhering to these guidelines.* Patient-Centered Reform: Lazris advocates for a return to healing through longer patient visits (40 minutes), focusing on lifestyle factors like diet and exercise (duh), and reducing unnecessary testing and medication.* Actionable Reforms: Lazris proposes three immediate reforms: eliminating pharmaceutical influence in federal agencies, restructuring Medicare reimbursement to favor primary care over procedures, and increasing Medicare funding for primary care residency programs.Dr. Andy Lazris is a physician Board Certified in Internal Medicine. He has practiced both primary care Internal Medicine and Geriatrics for the past 30 years. The volatility of stocks, the unpredictability of real estate, and the rising cost of living are leaving many investors searching for something stable. Gold, historically a safe haven, has hit new all-time highs—but what's driving this surge, and what challenges lie ahead for those looking to get involved? The truth is, the future of investing can feel like walking a tightrope. While everything around us fluctuates, gold stands as a rare asset with the potential to offer liquidity and value when other investments falter.  But here's the kicker: the gold market isn't foolproof. It comes with its own set of hurdles—price volatility, geopolitical risks, and accessibility issues—that could trip up even the most seasoned investor.  So, how do we navigate these challenges while still capitalizing on the rise of gold? What can we do today to prepare our investments for a future where gold becomes the ultimate safe haven? What are the key factors driving gold's latest surge in value? Seasoned advisor at McAlvany Precious Metals, Michael Arries, joins me for this episode to talk about the drivers behind gold's rise and how to mitigate investment risks when it comes to precious metals. We also discuss how to take advantage of gold's reliability. Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Portfolios and precious metals Diversifying a portfolio with precious metals can provide stability and hedge against inflation. What percentage of a portfolio should be allocated to precious metals for optimal balance? -Using a self-directed IRA to purchase gold A self-directed IRA allows investors to purchase gold, though many are unaware of this option. What steps are involved in using a self-directed IRA to invest in gold? -Silver vs. gold Silver is more volatile than gold and has the potential to outperform it in percentage gains, but gold is generally more stable and a preferred long-term hedge. Given silver's higher volatility, is it a better investment than gold?   Guest Bio Michael Arries is an experienced advisor in the field of precious metals, having traded gold and silver for almost 25 years. A native of Colorado, Michael Arries graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fort Lewis College with a bachelor's degree in Accounting and Computer Science.
