Elective office in each of the five boroughs of New York City
POPULARITY
While many travelers to New York City envision Manhattan's popular landmarks, NYC is composed of five unique and culture-rich boroughs. We'll give a brief overview of each borough and dive into some important NY terminology to help you have a smoother exploration of the city. The five boroughs of New York City are:ManhattanQueensBrooklynThe BronxStaten IslandEach of the five boroughs in New York City has unique offerings, cultures, and history. But first, let's define 'borough'.What is a Borough? In 1898, the term borough was adopted to describe a form of governmental administration for each of the five fundamental constituent parts of the newly consolidated city. So while each borough has some of its own governance, its power is inferior to the authority of the government of the City of New York. Before 1898, each borough (mostly) was seen more as a county and did not fall within the city of New York. Interestingly, each borough is also its own county. The boroughs aren't autonomous cities within a city, but rather administrative divisions of a single municipal government. It explains why, for example, the Mayor of NYC has authority over all five boroughs, and why there's one unified city budget, police department (NYPD), etc., even though each borough has its own Borough President and some local administrative functions. In today's terms, a borough is one of the five distinct geographic regions of New York City including:ManhattanQueensBrooklynThe BronxStaten IslandEach borough has multiple neighborhoods with distinct cultures and histories. We took to social media to get insights from borough residents, so you'll see their recommendations sprinkled throughout.See our full write-up on our website for links to places we mentioned (sorry, we can't fit it all in a podcast description). You'll Have to Check It Out - La Grande Boucherie in MidtownWant even more NYC insights? Brooooooklyn! Stand up! On this episode of #LatinosOutLoud, @RachelLaLoca heads back to her old stomping grounds, the borough of Brooklyn, to sit and chat with Borough President, Antonio Reynoso on location at Borough Hall. Antonio Reynoso is Brooklyn's 20th Borough President. Born and raised in Los Sures, Williamsburg, Borough President Reynoso is the youngest Borough President elected to a four-year term, the first Latino to hold the office in the borough, and the first Dominican to be elected as a Borough President in NYC! In his first year in office, Borough President Reynoso set an ambitious goal to make Brooklyn the safest borough in New York City to give birth. Building on that commitment, the Borough President announced a new partnership with Rachel's Alma mater, CUNY Brooklyn College, to launch New York State's first credit-bearing Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) Advanced Certificate Program. The program will prepare healthcare, mental health, early intervention, and early educational professionals to support pregnant mothers and birthing parents experiencing mental distress. For more info, click here. At his recent State of the Borough address, Reynoso introduced the public to Brooklyn's first-ever Arts Ambassador: renowned multi-disciplinary artist and fashion designer Colm Dillane, also known as KidSuper. This Week's Guests: Manhattan Borough President - Mark Levine https://www.votemarklevine.com/ Episode 348 Mark Levine has been at the forefront of advocating for more affordable, equitable and healthy communities for nearly 25 years. He's a former bilingual math and science teacher in the South Bronx, and he founded the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union, which today has made over $100 million of loans to local families and businesses in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. He served on the New York City Council for 8 years, including as Chair of the Committee on Parks, Chair of the Jewish Caucus, and Chair of the Committee on Health, where he brought his science-based and data driven approach to helping to lead the city out of the worst public health crisis in a century. He introduced and passed transformative tenants rights protections, including the first-in-the-nation Right to Counsel, which guarantees tenants at risk of eviction with legal representation if they cannot afford a lawyer. In 2022, Mark was elected Manhattan Borough President, where he led the fight to end our affordability crisis. He identified opportunities for tens of thousands of new units of housing, advocated for new policies that will help create badly needed affordable housing, and fought to protect tenants so they can stay in their homes. He has launched campaigns to plant a million more trees and deliver millions of dollars of low-interest loans to small businesses, and has pushed the city to improve our mental health system, ensure New Yorkers can travel quickly and safely on our streets, and prepare for climate change. Mark lives in Upper Manhattan with his wife and two kids, who are studying to be a nurse and EMT. In his free time, Mark spends time with his family and likes to study languages. He speaks Spanish and Hebrew fluently, and is studying Greek and French. "Rethink Production presents "Live From America Podcast" - a weekly show that combines political commentary with humor. #164 Recently a big indictment was revealed against NYC Mayor Eric Adams. He has seemingly been involved in some criminal activity and the Feds say it goes back to when he was a Borough President. I will never understand how politicians keep getting themselves into trouble! From Senator Menedez to Former President Trump in recent times, it seems that people in power will get there by any means necessary. Things are unfurling for Mayor Adams, and as of now it doesn't look good for him!Support the show
At 4:45PM on Independence Day 1944, The Raymond Scott Orchestra took to the air for fifteen minutes of music on CBS' WABC in New York. Born Harry Warnow on September 10th, 1908 in Brooklyn to Ukrainian Jewish parents, his older brother Mark, also a musician, encouraged Harry's career. He graduated from the Juilliard School of Music in 1931 where he studied piano, theory, and composition. He began his professional career as a pianist for the CBS Radio house band under his birth name. Mark, older by eight years, conducted the orchestra. Harry adopted the pseudonym "Raymond Scott" to spare his brother charges of nepotism when the orchestra began performing the pianist's unique compositions. In late 1936, Scott assembled a band from among his CBS colleagues. Although it was a six-piece group, he called it the Raymond Scott Quintette, joking with a reporter that calling at a sextet might take one's mind off the music. Scott believed in composing and playing by ear. He composed not on paper, but "on his band"—by humming phrases to his sidemen or by demonstrating riffs and rhythms on the keyboard, instructing players to interpret his cues. Also a sound engineer, he recorded the band's rehearsals, using them as references to develop his compositions. Scott reworked, re-sequenced, and deleted passages, and added themes from other discs to construct finished pieces. While he controlled the band's repertoire and style, he rarely took piano solos, preferring to direct the band from the keyboard and leave solos and leads to his sidemen. He also had a penchant for adapting classical motifs into his work. Independence Day 1944 was celebrated with remembrance, prayer, and War Bond drives. Norman Rockwell's July 1st Saturday Evening Post cover featured a wounded veteran holding up a $100 war bond. The July 3rd cover of LIFE Magazine featured a G.I with a leg wound being helped by a compatriot. There was a prominent sticker on top that said “buy war bonds.” Meanwhile in Bedford, New Hampshire, an unexpected explosion at the John P. Bedricks powder works sent nearly seventy-miles of New England into a panic as windows as far away as Worchester, Massachusetts were destroyed. Despite this, there were no fatalities. At 4PM, NBC celebrated the Treasury Department's “Salute To the Navy” from Philadelphia's Navy Yard. Speakers included Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthaur Jr., and Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal. In New York, Edward J. Nathan, Manhattan's Borough President, addressed a rally of Jewish war veterans at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Riverside Drive, while the Knights of Columbus and sixty-seven affiliated councils, sponsored a parade and band concert in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. That evening, a Special Fifth War Bond Rally was held at Lewisohn Stadium in City College.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a source of upheaval and suffering for over two years, but it has also presented us with an opportunity to try to do things differently going forward—in our personal lives, in our communities, and in the way governments serve people. During what looks to be a much-needed reprieve from the pandemic, Hillary turns to two brand new mayors, with different backgrounds and leadership styles, who are seizing this opportunity to transform their cities with vision and determination. First, we hear from Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, whose commitment to affordable housing, accessible transportation, and better health outcomes for all stem from her own experiences navigating dysfunctional public services for her immigrant mother with a mental health disability. Then we turn to New York Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer, state senator, and Brooklyn Borough President who says he wants to bring back the city's “swagger” by improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers while attending to both public safety and justice. Bios: Michelle Wu is the first woman, the first Asian American, and the first mother to be elected Mayor of Boston. She previously served on the Boston City Council, as a member and then, in 2016, as President. Eric Adams served with the NYPD for 22 years. In his second career as an elected official, he served as a state senator and Borough President of Brooklyn before winning the nomination for Mayor of New York in a crowded Democratic primary and going on to become New York's 110th, and only its second African American, Mayor.
