Your darkest moments will either break you beyond repair—or make you stronger. This was the choice faced by Steph Catudal as she navigated mortality, motherhood, and the search for self while her husband—beloved ultra-runner Tommy Rivs—battled a rare form of lung cancer that nearly took his life. Beautiful and heart-wrenching, Steph relates the intimacies of this experience in her New York Times bestselling memoir, Everything All At Once—an arresting, must-read perspective on trauma, rebellion, faith, tragedy and the painful struggle to identify one's place in the world. If you count yourself among the millions deeply impacted by Tommy Rivs' brush with death and return to life—one of the most beloved episodes the history of this podcast—then today's conversation is non-negotiable. This is a conversation about the big things in life: trauma, death, grief, pain, identity and faith. An artist with words, Steph shares the details of her complicated upbringing, the loss of faith that catalyzed a decade of rebellion, her journey with substance abuse, and the experience of very nearly losing her husband Tommy—juxtaposed agains the mirrored trauma of losing her father to lung cancer during her adolescence. This is about seeing healing as a never-ending journey—and the importance of assigning meaning to life's profound moments. It's also about how to cultivate gratitude—how to recognize love and beauty amid tragedy, while also holding space for pain, anger, and sorrow. In other words, how to allow everything all at once. I was very moved by Steph's vulnerability—and the power with which she owns her story. May you find this conversation equally impactful. Eighty-four days. That's how long Steph Catudal's husband Tommy Rivs was in a medically-induced coma during his battle with lung cancer. Today, she's on the show reflecting on that and more — coinciding with the publication day for her new memoir, Everything All At Once. In today's episode, Steph talks about what it was like when Rivs became ill and was put into coma at the height of the pandemic, and what happened as a result of that. She also brings us to her childhood, talking about the struggles of losing her father to cancer as well as navigating her relationship with faith. Her words are truly remarkable. I started following Steph like many as Rivs story made headlines back in 2020, and I've always been so drawn to both her writing and her strength. I ask Steph about how she's managed the influx of attention, what it was like to mother her three girls when she felt at her lowest point, as well as how she takes care of her, and her feelings on hope when life feels grim. For those unfamiliar with Rivs' story — he is now 2+ years into remission; something truly miraculous after the most hard-fought battle. Here's the thing that I'm not sure we realized when we started this thing: the work of excavating all the bits of ourselves is a really hard, really forked, incredibly individual path. We talk to Katie about what her path looked like, and how it's okay to want stuff and things and still be spiritual and shit. And some profound realizations along the way. Humor and pathos, right this way! Master Healer and Akashic Records Reader Katie Rubin spent 4 years at The University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism releasing her own trauma, opening her Spiritual Channel, and developing her Healing Skills and Psychic Abilities. She has since attended two other four-year-long Energy Healing Institutions including Lisa Barnett's Advanced Akashic Records Reading Training. Katie now uses the panoply of Divine Light Healing skills she's gained to serve her private and group healing clients, as she is directed to do so by the client's system, and The Divine itself. Lastly, In her nationally touring Comedic Healing Events known to her audiences as “Everything All At Once, an Irreverent Healing Event” Katie speaks deeply and intimately on the topics of trauma healing, spirituality, consciousness, personal purpose, the small-s self, The Big-S Self, God, Unity, and Oneness all while delivering wildly inappropriate jokes, singing apropos-to-the-moment songs, and sharing true stories from her life. Her talks (or shows) are Raw, Real, Hilarious and Game-Changing for her audiences. Blending question and answer style group processing with comedic storytelling, Katie's events will bring you clarity, awakening, awareness, laughter, joy and quite possibly some tears. So bring your tissues and your sense of humor, cuz it's bound to be a wild ride, indeed.
