How do you think about faith and hope when your prayers aren't answered? What about when they are? Steph and her husband, Rivs, have the kind of story you might see in a blockbuster movie. Rivs was a professional endurance athlete who was suddenly put on life support with a mysterious lung disease. But then a confluence of shocking events occurred to get him the care he needed to survive. Steph grew up as part of the Church of Latter Day Saints, a faith that believed that if she prayed hard enough, miracles would happen. But then her dad died when she was 14. So how does she understand faith and hope and miracles after Rivs' survival? In this conversation, Kate and Steph discuss: How do you talk to kids honestly about life and death and hope? How pain is a conduit for empathy How to allow things to just suck and not feel pressure to find any brightsides How to think about faith, hope, and miracles without idolizing certainty Steph is someone who knows intimately that life sometimes just happens and that we have to learn to live alongside all of that pain and that joy and that love that somehow coexists. "I thought I was leaving my grief behind. I truly thought I had finished grieving. When Rivs got sick, that narrative was cracked wide open. And I learned that you never finish grieving, and that's OK. Healing is a continuous journey, and the grief kind of comes along with us and becomes a part of us. And that's a beautiful thing." It's hard to find suitable words to do justice for Steph Catudal's words. Her New York Times best-selling memoir, Everything All at Once, is heart-wrenching, gripping, evocative, and emotional. It's the story of Steph's childhood — of losing her dad to lung cancer when she was just 14, and the turmoil, rebellion, and upheaval that filled the following years. It's simultaneously the story of her adulthood — of nearly losing her husband, Tommy Rivers Puzey, to lung cancer, and of his 84-day medically induced coma. It's the story of grief, survival, strength, caregiving, motherhood, and so much more. And it's about running, but it's not about running at all. Eighty-four days. That's how long Steph Catudal's husband Tommy Rivs was in a medically-induced coma during his battle with lung cancer. Today, she's on the show reflecting on that and more — coinciding with the publication day for her new memoir, Everything All At Once. In today's episode, Steph talks about what it was like when Rivs became ill and was put into coma at the height of the pandemic, and what happened as a result of that. She also brings us to her childhood, talking about the struggles of losing her father to cancer as well as navigating her relationship with faith. Her words are truly remarkable. I started following Steph like many as Rivs story made headlines back in 2020, and I've always been so drawn to both her writing and her strength. I ask Steph about how she's managed the influx of attention, what it was like to mother her three girls when she felt at her lowest point, as well as how she takes care of her, and her feelings on hope when life feels grim. For those unfamiliar with Rivs' story — he is now 2+ years into remission; something truly miraculous after the most hard-fought battle. Wade-beslutet. Episode 60 is here and our podcast is almost as old as our parents. In this one we go a little in depth about the PWHPA's decision to move forward, creating a league independent of the already established PHF. Also in women's hockey we chat about the NOT AT ALL RELATED moves of Digit Murphy joining the Rivs and Anya Packer stepping aside. Then we dive in on NHL things that are gone - Keith Yandle's streak, Ryan Getzlaf's career, Buffalo's playoff chances, Drew Doughty's season, then also talk about the recent influx of college talent into the NHL. Then we finish it off with brief chats about the impending Stanley Cup Playoffs, Evgeni Malkin doing Evgeni Malkin things, Chris Krieder's incredible season and Ryan Hartman as the hero of the people.

Our NWHL Season Review series CONTINUES! In this episode, we have an absolutely incredible guest. Madison Packer, the Captain of the Metropolitan Riveters, is the second-LONGEST tenured player in the NWHL, and has really seen it all within the league. We sit down with Madison to talk about her storied career with theRivs, the Wisconsin Badgers, and how she got to be such an incredible advocate off the ice as well. In addition, we obviously have to talk about the Riveters' season right?! The Rivs are in a tough situation though - they were the first to face a COVID-19 shutdown in Lake Placid, and were only able to play three games. Madison, as Captain and a leader in the league, walks us through what this was like to digest during the season pause, and how she was able to carry herself with such poise (and humor!) during the Boston weekend as a guest and a media personality. Interested?! Be sure to listen up, give us a like and follow, and check out BOTH us and Madison on social media - trust us, she is hilarious on Twitter.
