After the Olympics in 2018, both Jason Brown and Evgenia Medvedeva decided to move to Canada to train with legendary coaching team Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson. They made friends and, despite the pandemic, stayed in touch when life put them down different paths. They were reunited (briefly) at Beijing 2022 in person. But we decided to get them together for a catch up with journalist Katerina Kuznetsova.
15-year-old Kamila Valieva sparked a lot of media attention during the Beijing 2022 Olympics - first for becoming the first female skater to land a quad jump in Olympic competition then for testing positive for a banned angina medication. As the world keeps asking questions about her doping test, there is a much bigger issue with the state of women's figure skating that needs attention. We break down the evolution of women's figure skating under Valieva's coach Eteri Tutberidze who introduced the quad jumps into women's skating and led teen skaters Yulia Lipnitskaya, Evgenia Medvedeva, and Alina Zagitova to Olympic glory. Davis and Orser chatted about Hanyu’s ankle injury, Fernandez’s European Championships mission and what his opinion on Medvedeva’s inconsistent season. “I ask everyone for their patience. Please. This week, Nick McCarvel and Jackie Wong recap the unpredictable Skate Canada International, discussing Evgenia Medvedeva, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Jason Brown's performances and more. Then, McCarvel chats with Outi Wuorenheimo, the general secretary of the Finnish Figure Skating Association, ahead of the first Grand Prix in Finland ever.
Our first in-person competition of the season was the 2018 Autumn Classic International, so we have a lot of thoughts about all of the disciplines! We start with the ladies, and break down Evgenia Medvedeva's new look and attitude under Brian Orser, our love of Shae-Lynn Bourne's choreography, and the confidence and intensity of Bradie Tennell.
It’s time to start thinking about the new Olympic cycle for figure skating. So, we asked two Olympic champions what they think Yuzuru Hanyu and Evgenia Medvedeva should do next. Russia’s Evgeni Plushenko (interview starts at 02:56) says that Hanyu is ‘from a different planet’. And hints that the Japanese double Olympic champion could be capable of doing the quad axel. Plushenko also says that if Medvedeva feels more comfortable training with coach Brian Orser then – why not? We also spoke to USA’s Brian Boitano (interview starts at 11:10) who won gold against Brian Orser at Calgary 1988. He advises Hanyu against taking too much of a break from competitive skating. And he thinks that Medvedeva will become an even better skater after training with Boitano’s former rival Brian Orser. Two exclusive interviews that you won’t see (or hear!) anywhere but Olympic Channel. If you liked this episode, we would love it if you gave it a five star review on iTunes or wherever you found us.
