Olympic gold medalist. Figure skating icon. Self-proclaimed "dramatic monster." Adam Rippon joins Franklin and Kate for an unhinged and hilarious episode that covers everything from Molly Shannon obsession to curating the perfect skating soundtrack. The trio dives into Useless Celebrity History, shares pop culture hot takes, and gets wonderfully derailed during a chaotic movie quiz. Plus, Adam opens up about his first on-screen crush (spoiler: Zac Efron inHigh School Musical) and the very unexpected hobbies that moment inspired. This episode is pure gold — just like Adam's medal.Questions? Comments? Criticism? Shuga Cain steps Behind The Rope. Shuga is here to discuss it all! Of course, all includes RuPaul's Drag Race and Shuga's Season Eleven contribution to the brilliant show. Shuga takes us down the road of her journey from quitting a six figure a year job, to performing nightly in the legendary New York City nightlife club scene with the likes of Bob The Drag Queen to eventually applying and being chosen for Drag Race. With all the drama so far this season on RHOA, RHOBH, Summer House and more, we figured today the perfect day to share something fun in this blast from the past chat with the one and only Miss Shuga Cain. Shuga opens up about the positives and negatives of Drag Race, the judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews as well as RuPaul herself. Shuga breaks down the best and hardest parts of Drag Race and lifts the curtain for a look into what filming the hit TV show is really like. We also chat about guest judges Miley Cyrus, Adam Rippon and last, but certainly not least, The Real Housewives of Atlanta's Kandi Burruss. @missshugacain @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: CORNBREAD - cornbreadhemp.com/velvet (30% Off With Code Velvet on Cornbread's Gummies) AIR DOCTOR - airdoctorpro.com (Use Code Velvet For Up To $300 Off Today The Best Air Purifier Voted By Newsweek) STRAWBERRY - Strawberry.me/VELVET (Get 20% Off Your First Month & Take Charge Of Your Future With The Help Of a Certified Coach) JUNE'S JOURNEY (Download This Hidden Object Interactive Mobile Game Now on Android or iOS) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. The very first time I saw WICKED was when the national tour came to Cleveland in February 2008. The actress playing Glinda at the time was Katie Rose Clarke. As fate would have it, I was recently offered the chance to speak with her and Steven Jamail about their brand new song connected to their upbringing in Houston, Texas titled 'Margarita Christmas.' So naturally, I said yes. Katie Rose Clarke made her Broadway debut almost 20 years ago when she took over for Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, where she even got to be a part of the PBS broadcast. Her subsequent credits include Hannah Campbell in ALLEGIANCE with George Takei and Lea Salonga, Ellen in the 2017 revival of MISS SAIGON, and most recently as Beth in the Tony-winning revival of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. Not to mention that she also happens to be Broadway's longest-running Glinda in WICKED. Steven Jamail is a composer, producer, musical director who has done arrangements and orchestrations that have been performed on Oprah, Howard Stern, Rachel Ray, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart, The NBC Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center, and the American Songbook series at Lincoln Center. He has also created arrangements and played for Bebe Winans, Rosie O'Donnell, Jessie Mueller, Jeremy Abbott, and Adam Rippon. He serves as the regular music director for Orfeh, Teal Wicks, Danielle Hope, and Lea Michele, having just recently orchestrated and conducted Ms. Michele's lauded Carnegie Hall debut and Life in Music Tour. He is the Associate Artistic Director of O'Donnell's foundation, Rosie's Theater Kids in NYC. *I do not own any of the content used in this video. In growing numbers, athletes are speaking up about their struggles with mental illness—including high-profile stars such as Michael Phelps, Kevin Love, Simone Biles, and Naomi Osaka. More disclosures are surely on the way, as athletes recognize that their openness can help others and inspire those around them. In Mind Game: An Inside Look at the Mental Health Playbook of Elite Athletes (Rowman & Littlefield, 2024), Julie Kliegman offers insight into how elite athletes navigate mental performance and mental illness—and what non-athletes can learn from them. She explores the recent mental health movement in sports, the history and practice of sport psychology, the stereotypes and stigmas that lead athletes to keep their troubles to themselves, and the ways in which injury and retirement can throw wrenches in their mental states. Kliegman also examines the impacts of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance use, and more, with a keen eye toward moving forward with acceptance, progress, and problem-solving. Featuring insightful interviews with Olympians Chloe Kim, McKayla Maroney, and Adam Rippon, NBA players Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan, former U.S. Open tennis champ Bianca Andreescu, and many other athletes and experts, Mind Game breaks down the ongoing, heartening movement of athletes across sports coming forward to get the care they need and deserve—and to help others feel safe opening up about their struggles, as well. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book was The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won. His next book, a biography of Moses Malone will be published in 2025. You can reach Paul at paulknepper@gmail.com and follow him on Twitter @paulieknep. Learn more about your ad choices. We welcome Tom Schwartz, best known from “Vanderpump Rules, now an EMMY nominated reality show after ten years of being on the air and Tom humorously acknowledges the irony of his appearance on a fashion podcast given his not-so-fashionable reputation. We delve into Tom's personal life, revealing his recent divorce and plans to move back to West Hollywood. He discusses co-parenting his puppies with his ex-wife Katie and announces an upcoming getaway to Mexico and spending new years with Tom Sandoval in Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Pol' and Patrik give him a lesson in Thailand do's and don'ts and can you guess a live sex show in the Bangkok Red Light District is a do, or a don't? Tom opens about shooting “Stars on Mars,” and working alongside celebrities like Lance Armstrong, Adam Rippon and Ariel Winter, from Modern Family fame. He reflects on his life post-divorce, emphasizing personal growth and the joys of rediscovering self-love. We all get real with the reality of Scheana Shay's Mexican wedding in Cancun and Pol's involvement in designing the wedding gown and we share our memories of Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills. Tom reveals his aspirations for future romance and fatherhood, his views on fellow cast members like Lala and Scheana and working with his ex-wife Katie and getting “cozy” with his Winter House co-star, the other Katie, or as he calls her Floody. We dive into the authenticity of “Vanderpump Rules” compared to other reality shows. We finish Part 1 with the first half of Tom's Armenian Coffee Cup Reading and Pol's insight into Tom's upcoming trip to Asia and the significance it will have on changing his life and entering 2024 with a renewed sense of belonging and healing, just before the new season drops and Tom attends his very first Emmys. Just in time for the height of the figure skating season, Amanda and Patrick are here to talk about 2016's Yuri!!! On Ice, the critically acclaimed sports anime about the world of professional figure skating and the blossoming of queer love! That's right, you read that correctly: this is an anime about queer love and if you don't agree, we would like to know what anime you are watching… Anyway… join this week's hosts as they discuss how this is not just one of the best sports anime ever made, but one of the best anime to ever come out of Japan. Just ask Amanda who watched it five times back-to-back! Amanda proceeds to yell about her favorite feral skate, Yuri Plisetsky, while Patrick prompts a discussion on the absolutely banger of an opening credits song. They discuss the importance of the very real romantic relationship between Yuri Katsuki and his coach and idol, Russian legend Viktor Nikiforov, and the lack of subtlety in it despite claims to the contrary. Patrick talks about the impact this anime has had on real life Olympic-level professional figure skating, including use of the music from the anime in competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Amanda and Patrick also talk about the broader cast of characters–from Kazakhstan's Otabek Altin to Thailand's Phichit Chulanot–while Patrick talks about just how talented they all are in the context of how the Grand Prix of Figure Skating is conducted in the real world (with only a little bit about how Adam Rippon was robbed of an individual medal at the 2018 Olympics). So come and join Amanda and Patrick as we talk about the highs and lows of figure skating (real and animated), queer love, and the beauty of Yuri!!! On Ice!

In this episode, Amira Rose Davis, Lindsay Gibbs and Jessica Luther discuss TV and film adaptations of sports stories. But first, Amira shares an urgent message of concern about Melissa Lucio, a mother in Texas on death row. To learn how to help, visit the Innocence Project. The team starts the show with a chuckle about the NBA playoffs. Following this discussion, you'll hear a preview of Jessica's interview with legendary ice skater Adam Rippon. Next, they burn the worst of sports this week on the Burn Pile. Please welcome the newest holiday podcast to The Dipp's lineup -- The 12 Gays Of Christmas, with Brian Moylan. This week olympic medalist and Quibi survivor Adam Rippon joins Brian to talk about Will Ferrell's Christmas classic where a human baby is raised in the North Pole and then returns to find his biological father. They talk about all the best moments of the film, the creepiness of Buddy the Elf creeping on his love interest in the shower, and how the worst part of the movie is that Zooey Deschanel is a blonde. Adam also shares the odd Christmas traditions of Finland, where his partner lives, and Brian tells a couple of stories about Christmas-inspired hookups. Sadly none are with Will Ferrell.
