IOC's Bach Demands Punishment of Doping Offenders over Valieva Disqualification
The Winter Youth Olympic Games 2024 has come to a close and the digital flame has been turned off. We run through the second week of competition, including feed beefs (or a lack thereof) and results from: Alpine Skiing Biathlon Cross-Country Skiing Curling Figure Skating Freestyle Skiing Ice Hockey - including why USA and Canada did not field women's teams in these Games Nordic Combined Short Track Speed Skating - the mixed relay was a lot of fun! Snowboard Speed Skating Closing Ceremony It's been a big news week for the Olympics! First off, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) released its ruling on the Kamila Valieva doping situation from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which only took 721 days. Valieva will face a four-year ban effective on the date of the doping, December 25, 2021. That ruling changes the results of the team figure skating competition from Beijing 2022, and the International Skating Union decided that USA would get moved up to gold, Japan up to silver....and Russia would drop down to bronze. We explain how the ISU's decision is possible--and who's not happy because of it. Paris 2024 announced that it will have random ticket drops until the Games begin in order to sell out its remaining 1+ million ticket inventory. The end of January brought decision-day for whether the Milan-Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee would commit to building a new sliding track (not IOC-recommended), or if they would put the sliding competitions at a track outside of Italy (IOC-recommended). Guess what they chose? Our slidingnovela lives on!! NFL – National Football League – Week 10 Yesterday Washington Commanders 32, Philadelphia Eagles 21 Commanders 32, Eagles 21 – Commanders end sloppy Eagles’ perfect season 32-21 The Eagles’ bid for an undefeated season is over. The Washington Commanders turned methodical drives into scores and took advantage of turnover-prone Philadelphia to stun the Eagles 32-21 on Monday night and send them to their first loss in nine games this season. Behind Jalen Hurts, the Eagles were 8-0 for the first time in franchise history and the last team in the NFL that could make a run at Miami’s 17-0 mark in 1972 and the lone perfect season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, going 18-0 before a Super Bowl loss. The Commanders also spoiled Pittsburgh’s 11-0 start in 2020. Hurts threw for just 174 yards. NCAAMBKB – Men’s College Basketball Tonight Michigan State vs. (4) Kentucky, 7:00 p.m. (at Indianapolis) Superhits 103.7 Cosy-FM 6:00 Eastern Michigan at Bradley, 8:00 p.m. NCAAMBKB – North Carolina, Gonzaga are 1-2 atop AP Top 25 poll North Carolina and Gonzaga are 1-2 in the first regular-season men’s college basketball poll from The Associated Press. Third-ranked Houston and fourth-ranked Kentucky picked up the remaining first-place votes in Top 25 with only slight changes from the preseason rankings. Baylor, Kansas, Duke, UCLA, Arkansas and Creighton round out the top 10. Tennessee fell 11 spots while Villanova fell out for the first time since February 2019. No. 24 Texas A&M and No. 25 Connecticut are the new additions. NCAAWBKB – Women’s College Basketball Tonight Oakland at Michigan State, 7:00 p.m. NCAAWBKB – No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 Stanford showdown set South Carolina remains the unanimous choice at No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll. The Gamecocks will face second-ranked Stanford on Sunday in the 63rd meeting between the top two teams in the poll. Texas, Iowa and UConn round out the first five. Ohio State moved up six spots to eighth after beating then-No. 5 Tennessee last week. The Lady Vols fell to 11th. Villanova and Utah entered the rankings at No. 24 and 25, replacing Princeton and South Dakota State. NCAAFB – Suspect caught in fatal shooting of 3 UVA FB players Authorities said a University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’ Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. The young men were athletes who’d been journeying through varying periods of transition in their college football careers. One was bouncing back from a season-ending injury. Another had changed positions on the team. And yet another had recently transferred in from the University of Wisconsin. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Carolina Hurricanes 3, Chicago Blackhawks 0 Hurricanes 3, Blackhawks 0 – Rookie Kochetkov gets 1st shutout, Canes beat Blackhawks 3-0 Rookie Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves for his first career shutout, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0. Jordan Martinook and Jordan Staal each had a goal and an assist for Carolina. Andrei Svechnikov scored his team-leading 12th goal, and Brent Burns had two assists. Kochetkov wasn’t heavily tested, but made some timely close-in stops in his second start this season and fifth game of his career. Chicago’s Petr Mrazek blocked 29 shots as the Blackhawks were blanked for the third time this season. Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00 p.m. NHL – Sedin twins, Luongo and Alfredsson inducted to Hall of Fame Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Canucks teammate Roberto Luongo, former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, Finnish women’s national team player Riikka Sallinen and Herb Carnegie were welcomed into the Hockey Hall of Fame as the class of 2022 on Monday. The Sedin twins and Luongo were elected in their first years of eligibility back in June, while Alfredsson had waited since 2017. The induction increased the number of Swedish players in the hall from four to seven. NBA – National Basketball Association Last Night Toronto Raptors 115, Detroit Pistons 111 Raptors 115, Pistons 111 – Blanton, Boucher lead short-handed Raptors past Pistons Dalano Banton scored 27 points and Chris Boucher added 20 as the short-handed Toronto Raptors snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Detroit Pistons 115-111. O.G. Anunoby added 19 points and seven rebounds for Toronto, which played without Fred VanVleet (non-COVID illness), Pascal Siakam (abdominal strain) and Gary Trent (hip). Rookie Jaden Ivey scored 21 for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight. Bojan Bogdanovic added 18 points. MLB – Seattle’s Rodríguez, Atlanta’s Harris voted top rookies Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez and Atlanta’s Michael Harris II, a pair of 21-year-old center fielders, are baseball’s Rookies of the Year. Rodriguez hit .284 with 28 homers, 75 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in helping the Mariners reach the postseason for the first time since 2001. He won the AL honor by receiving 29 of 30 first-place votes and one second for 148 points from a BBWAA panel. Harris batted .297 with 19 homers, 64 RBIs and 20 steals. He was voted the NL award, getting 22 firsts and eight seconds for 134 points from a different BBWAA panel. MLB – Cubs release 5-time Gold Glove outfielder Heyward The Chicago Cubs have released Jason Heyward, cutting ties with a five-time Gold Glove outfielder who never produced at the plate the way they hoped. The 33-year-old Heyward had one season left on the $184 million, eight-year contract he signed prior to the 2016 season. He hit .245 with 62 home runs over seven years with the Cubs. Heyward famously rallied teammates with a pep talk during a rain delay late in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Chicago went on to win 8-7 in 10 innings, ending a championship drought that dated to 1908. Olympics – Winter 2026 – Russian skater Valieva could miss 2026 Olympics over doping The Court of Arbitration for Sport says 16-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva faces a potential four-year doping ban which would rule her out of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. CAS has registered an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and says WADA is seeking a four-year ban to start on the date CAS makes its ruling. That would cover the next Olympics in Italy. WADA also wants Valieva to be disqualified from events including her gold-medal win in the Olympic team event in Beijing in February. Tennis – Djokovic set to be granted visa to play Australian Open Novak Djokovic is set to be granted a visa to play in next year’s Australian Open despite his high-profile deportation in January. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says it has confirmed newspaper reports that the immigration minister has overturned Djokovic’s potential three-year exclusion period from Australia. The Australian Border Force has previously said an exclusion period could be waived under certain circumstances. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has declined comment on privacy grounds. That means any announcement on Djokovic’s visa status for Australia would have to come from the 35-year-old Serbian tennis star. FIFA – World Cup – US Soccer uses rainbow crest in Qatar The U.S. Soccer Federation is using a rainbow version of its crest at the Americans’ World Cup training facility in Doha, Qatar. The federation normally uses a crest with blue lettering and red stripes but changed the stripes to seven different colors at the training facility, where workouts started ahead of the Americans’ World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21. The rainbow crest is part of the Be the Change initiative of the USSF and its players. Qatar has been criticized over attitudes towards LGBTQ fans and the treatment of migrant workers. Drug scandals are unfortunately notorious in sports, as the Beijing Winter Olympics so recently illustrated with its flashbacks to the vast Russian doping scandal of the 2014 Sochi Games. These doping issues have cheated many clean athletes out of their rightful medals and can take several Olympic cycles to sort out, leaving the true champions in the shadow of the doper and their scandal. Today's guest, Allison Wagner, has very personal experience with this issue and is now in a place to start making effective changes in sport for athletes. Allison is an Olympic silver medalist, a three-time World silver medalist, a thirteen-time national champion, and even held a world record in swimming for over fourteen years. On several occasions, Allison was beaten in major championships by swimmers who are highly suspected or have proven to be users of banned performance-enhancing substances. She now works for the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) as their first Director of Athlete and International Relations. On today's podcast, Allison shares her story and gives us a basic understanding of how the drug testing process works and our rights as athletes. We also dig into the Russian doping scandal that started way back in 2014 and what we can do as athletes and coaches to affect change. Allison begins the episode with a rundown of her history as an athlete and her personal experience competing against dopers. She shares the frustration of not being protected by those in positions of power and influence and how that led to her current position working for USADA, where she's committed to driving changes in the global anti-doping system. Allison then gives some advice for current athletes on what to do if they find themselves up against dopers and an overview of how doping controls function, including the requirements enforced by the Whereabouts System. She also explains what rights athletes have to appeal in the event they miss a test or receive a positive result. The conversation then switches gears to discuss the Russian doping scandal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the failure to effectively punish those involved, and the negative impact that has had on trust in governing bodies in sport. Alison points out that there are still major issues regarding trust and transparency in sports governance, as highlighted recently with the Kamila Valieva scandal at the 2022 Beijing Games, and calls out the lack of concern and acknowledgment for the harm done to the clean athletes competing against Valieva. She calls for those in positions of power to speak up and take action and suggests ways that athletes can push for change by speaking to their sponsors and representatives, emphasizing that communication is key to making those in power take notice and change their priorities. Episode Highlights: Allison's history as an athlete Competing against dopers as a clean athlete Allison's advice for current athletes on dealing with dopers How doping controls work Athletes' right to appeal Turnaround times for sample analysis The Russian doping scandal at Sochi and its influence Issues of trust and transparency in sports governance The Kamila Valieva scandal How and where change can happen Speaking truth from positions of power How athletes can push for change Quotes: “Over the years, these doping issues have become front and center in the news to the detriment of the clean athletes. Sometimes, several Olympic cycles will pass before athletes are even found to have cheated, and the clean athletes are finally awarded their rightful medals and place on the podium. But that's long after the world has forgotten about the event and moved on, leaving the true champions forever in the shadows of the doper and their scandal.” “That experience, for me, was gradually and more increasingly frustrating and defeating. You know, realizing that my devotion to respecting the rules and a fair playing field and respecting my competitors, you know, that devotion wasn't being protected by those people in positions of power and influence.” “This is how things change, if people get engaged and involved. While there's a lot of room for improvement in terms of how athletes have or don't have power, decision-making power in sport-governance structures, I think it only helps if athletes can engage.” “I had a DCO once accompany me to a theater show. I had just emptied my bladder, and I had tickets to this show. And so, they just came with me. So I could, like, provide a sample again.” “I think that it's pretty unfair as an athlete to have to compete against a system that wasn't effectively sanctioned. And what we see now is that I don't think anybody's really confident that they've not been coordinating doping amongst their athletes. And that any punishment, or the lack of punishment basically, has led us to where we are today.” “It's unfair to everybody. It's unfair to the Olympic Games and the Olympic system overall. You know, people lost confidence in the Olympic Games being clean, they lost confidence that there would be bold action taken in response to the state-sponsored doping that was proved.” “What was concerning to me as well was that there was no acknowledgment for the irreparable harm to the clean athletes in competition, as well. So it was all focused on the harm to Kamila, but what about the harm to the clean athletes and also the sport and the Olympic Games?” “The Olympics in LA in 2028 are going to be a great opportunity for the US to assert concerns and create a new stage for the Olympics that is more dedicated to protecting athletes—clean athletes and athletes in general—from injustices.” “The Olympic spirit, as we know, and the Olympic values are a cherished part of the Olympic movement, I think by everybody, but they're not being sufficiently protected. And the Olympic Games are not being, and the Paralympic Games are not being sufficiently protected.” “Speaking truth is something that takes, you know, courage and boldness, and it's to be respected and supported. And I think we need more people doing that.” “I'm just trying to find a way to change this, you know, I don't want to just leave it the way it is. I love sports, and I want it to be this awesome thing for my kids coming up, for the next generations coming up. I want it to be this beautiful thing that made us fight for things and want to be these amazing people, you know, in this pure, beautiful way.” “What I'm hearing is the moral of the story is we just can't stop pushing. I guess we just need to be this consistent drumbeat where we just don't let it go.” “I've experienced the downsides of sports. And I am happy to keep any concerns confidential. And there will be no selling out on my behalf. Because I just, you know, I paid too high of a cost personally, for what I experienced in sport, to take anything lightly. Most especially confidence.” “We need to start speaking up. We are courageous athletes, we need to be courageous people as well, you know, outside of our arena, outside of the sport, when it has to do with these things like our sport that we love.” “The conversations I have with people from the IOC, WADA, and other sport-governance people is that they just have no idea. You know, they're living in this bubble of unicorns and rainbows, and that is not in touch with the reality of how athletes fight their way through their careers oftentimes. And athletes need more support in lots of ways, and they need more advocates.” Pursuit of Gold Podcast is brought to you by Kaatsu Global. Can we get a solid answer on the difference" between their situations? Mediators ruled that Valieva should be allowed to skate regardless of testing positive for performing enhancing drugs. While suspending Richardson for Marijuana use used to cope with depression and grief. How do we address the double standard within the athletic community as well as the Black community? Do we as people of color have a responsibility to uphold higher standards or does that higher standard actually backfire and shrink the voice we have?

If anyone can show Olympic figure skater, Kamila Valieva, how to rise above with joy, it's Olympic gold medalist, Scott Hamilton. The 2022 winter games that just wrapped up were devastating for the 15 year-old Russian phenom. She went into the games as a gold medal favorite and finished 4th in the midst of a doping scandal.Hamilton brought not only his expertise, but his humanity, to his role as a commentator for NBC Sports. He stood firm in his belief that Valieva should not be allowed to compete after testing positive for three banned substances. But he was just as firm in expressing his compassion for a young athlete — a minor — whose coaches and other adults failed to protect her. That is Scott. Compassionate. Warm. Vulnerable. Inspiring. All of that and more are on full display in this emotional conversation we had almost a year ago.As you will see, Scott was undeterred and undaunted by the inevitable ups and downs of life. Time after time, it would have been so easy to quit. But that is not in his DNA.One can only imagine the emotional turmoil Valieva is experiencing — and how she will come out of it.It will not be easy. But if she is looking for a roadmap to begin this difficult journey, she need look no further than the Olympic Champion who can give us all a master class in how to rise above with joy.www.ourvoicesmatterpodcast.comwww.lorellemedia.comThis podcast is devoted to empowering us all to better understand each other's differences...one story at a time. Emmy Award-winning journalist, Linda Lorelle, guides guests through insightful, unexpected conversations that reveal our common humanity. **CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of abuse, eating disorders and death by suicide.** In this episode Brenda Elsey, Lindsay Gibbs and Jessica Luther break down the figure skating doping controversy at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. They start the show, however, with Olympic moments that were fuzzy and cute. Then, they decipher what happened in the mess of the women's figure skating conclusion that started when Russian teenager Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance on February 7. They discuss everything from the troubling, yet celebrated, coach Eteri Tutberidze, to what the heck trimetazidine is and what the hell the ROC is doing with it, to the alphabet soup (WADA, RUSADA, IOC, CAS ) that is "governing" the debacle. They also talk about the harm that this fiasco has caused Valieva, as well as gold medalist Anna Shcherbakova, silver medalist Alexandra Trusova and bronze medalist Kaori Sakamoto, as well as the damaging impacts that the culture of figure skating has on it's athletes, especially teenagers. Following this discussion, you'll hear a preview of Shireen's interview with Billy Bridges, a Paralympic gold medalist and sledge hockey legend. Then, the team burns the worst of the sports this week on The Burn Pile. Next, they lift up those making sports better, including Torchbearer of the Week Sarah Nurse, Canadian women's hockey player and gold medalist who set an Olympic record of 18 points in the Beijing Games. She's also the only Black female hockey player to compete in the Olympics. They wrap up the show with what's good in their lives and what they are watching in sports this week. U.S. sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has accused sports authorities of a double standard in how she and Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva were treated after positive drug tests. The IOC denies the claim, the Guardian reports. Deadspin argues that the handling of Valieva’s situation is setting a dangerous precedent. Texans are racing to get early appointments for abortions to get ahead of the six-week deadline set by the state’s restrictive law. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva fell several times and finished fourth in THE women's Olympic individual figure skating event, which she was favored to win.Her teammate clinched the gold. A medal ceremony will be held on Friday. The International Olympic Committee had previously said no medal ceremony would be held if Valieva finished in the top three...because the 15-year-old athlete failed a drug test taken in December, before the Olympic Games started. The doping controversy surrounding the young skater continues to delay the awarding of medals for an earlier event. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

15-year-old Kamila Valieva sparked a lot of media attention during the Beijing 2022 Olympics - first for becoming the first female skater to land a quad jump in Olympic competition then for testing positive for a banned angina medication. As the world keeps asking questions about her doping test, there is a much bigger issue with the state of women's figure skating that needs attention. We break down the evolution of women's figure skating under Valieva's coach Eteri Tutberidze who introduced the quad jumps into women's skating and led teen skaters Yulia Lipnitskaya, Evgenia Medvedeva, and Alina Zagitova to Olympic glory. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, whose doping case has rocked the Beijing Olympics, had three drugs that could be used to treat heart conditions in the sample she provided last December, the New York Times reported on Tuesday. In addition to testing positive for the banned angina drug trimetazidine, the New York Times report said the Stockholm laboratory that analyzed Valieva's sample also found evidence of two other heart medications that are not on the banned list: hypoxen and L-Carnitine. "It's a trifecta of substances — two of which are allowed, and one that is not allowed," United States Anti-Doping Agency Chief Executive Officer Travis Tygart said in the report. Tygart added that the benefits of such a combination "seem to be aimed at increasing endurance, reducing fatigue and promoting greater efficiency in using oxygen." Despite this, health and quarantine authorities are continuing to mull over the prospect of easing social distancing guidelines. Important Updates Konnor McClain's former coaches respond to her accusations of racism Fisk University will launch the first HBCU college gymnastics team Fart sabotage. That's right: fart sabotage. That whole figure skating thing gets us talking about changing the age limit in gymnastics. Some context: "Because she is younger than 16, Kamila Valieva is considered a “protected person” by the World Anti-Doping Agency and therefore could receive a lesser punishment than an adult who could receive a maximum two-year suspension." "The panel said Monday that it would be unfair and cause “irreparable harm” to Valieva if she were barred from the Olympic competition." College Gym Update The National Collegiate Achilles Apocalypse claimed more victims this week. What will it take to stop the madness? Thoughts on the midseason blues, NQS, and the college gymnastics schedule Do DIII teams really get higher scores when they go away at DI schools? SURE DO. Not an urban myth, it's a study from Spencer. Using data from every meet for the DIII WIAC teams (the 8 teams in Wisconsin/Minnesota) for the last 10 years—679 team scores—the average score when they compete away at a DI or DII school is 186.104. Compared to when they compete at home or at other DIII schools or neutral venues, when the average score is 183.776. That's a difference of 2.328 in the team score—or greater than four falls—maintained across an entire decade of meets for an entire division of teams. Far from being an urban myth, DIII teams scoring far higher at DI and DII schools is a long-standing and verifiable reality. Russian prodigy Kamila Valieva made figure skating history last week, becoming the first woman to land a solo quadruple jump at the Olympics. In fact, Valieva landed two quadruple jumps as she led Russia to the women's team gold. But just two days later, the medal ceremony for the event was suddenly delayed — and we've since learned that Valieva tested positive for a banned heart medication in December. The Court for Arbitration in Sport has now ruled Valieva can still compete in the women's individual event, but there will be no medal ceremony if she lands on the podium. Shortly before the ruling, we spoke to freelance journalist Gabby Paluch about how this case fits into a history of Russian doping, and about the story behind the notoriously tough coach that's both making and breaking young stars like Valieva.
