The following day, the ISU reallocated medals in the team event, upgrading the U.S. to gold and Japan to silver, while dropping the Russian Olympic Committee to bronze. So with this news, we welcomed back to This Week in Skating, one of the newest Olympic gold medalists, Vincent Zhou.----------This Week in Skating is hosted by Gina Capellazzi and Daphne Backman and is a cooperative project between Figure Skaters Online and Ice-dance.com. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva wowed us all at the 2022 Winter Olympics. At just 15 years old, she jumped onto the international stage, earning first place in her Olympic routines. However, this success was embroiled by controversy after she failed a drug test weeks before the competition. She was still allowed to compete as officials investigated, but now, these achievements have been wiped from record books. We cover her disqualification & why this sentence sends a message to all countries competing in this year's Olympics. ISU Awards and Art on Ice 2024 Recap and Reactions

We breakdown the 2024 ISU Awards and their accompanying live concert event, Art on Ice. We also take a look at the ongoing 2022 Olympic Team Medal fiasco, and talk about Gracie Gold's new memoir, Outofshapeworthlessloser.   The ISU Awards were handed out for the fourth time on Sunday, February 11th during one of the first Art on Ice performances of 2024 — and the show was certainly a spectacle. Co-hosted by skating legend, Kurt Browning, and sports presenter and influencer, Elma Smit, the award show was intertwined with performances from elite skaters and musical acts performing as part of Art on Ice — a show that happens yearly in Switzerland, and is known for bold and unique shows that ignite the imagination.  While some of the awards are a bit vague in terms of how those in the category qualify and the methods used for voting a little confusing, we're always here for celebrating the skaters themselves. It was a delight to see Adam Siao Him Fa, Hana Yoshida, Loena Hendrickx, and Ilia Malinin all take home some hardware. The highlight of the awards had to be the Special Achievement honor given to Deanna Stelatto-Dudek in honor of all she has achieved during her unprecedented 2-part competitive career spanning over 2 decades. It was obvious how much this acknowledgment meant to Deanna, which was wonderful to see her receive. The streamed version of the Art on Ice performances were a bit disjointed to watch — with quite of bit of the skating being missed due to the cameras often focusing on the musical performances more than the skaters.  At some point, we'd love to see this award show move away from its partnership with Art on Ice and shift to the end of the season — perhaps directly following the World Championships (at the gala?). It seems like that may make these awards feel a bit more authentic and exciting.  2022 Olympic Team Medals  In other ISU news, we discuss the recent decision in the Kamila Valieva case, and how the ISU has stood their ground after making what seems to be a mathematical error in redistributing points for the Olympic Team medals. With Valieva being disqualified for 4 years as of December of 2021, her scores from the 2022 Olympic Team event and 2022 Europeans have been scratched.  While in the Europeans that means every woman moves up one spot, the points earned in the Team competition got far more harried and now leaves the US with gold, Japan with silver, and Russia with bronze. If the ISU had followed previous precedent and what has been their own rules, it seems Canada would be in the bronze position — and with that in mind, Canada has since filed a case to dispute the ISU's decision.  Gracie Gold's Memoir Lastly, like many of you, we were quick to grab a copy of US figure skating champion, Gracie Gold's, new member — Outofshapeworthlessloser. The title certainly gives you a preview of the tone of the book, but the contents definitely dig deep into the heart of what needs to change in figure skating.  From her difficult family life to massively unreasonable expectations of a teenager from varying coaches, officials, and judges, to her near-tragic meltdown prior to the 2018 Olympic Games, this book is unapologetically vulnerable. Our hope is that is brings more empathy for, and awareness to, what elite skaters go through — and the need for improvements from those who support them. Snowboard Speed Skating Closing Ceremony It's been a big news week for the Olympics! First off, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) released its ruling on the Kamila Valieva doping situation from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which only took 721 days. Valieva will face a four-year ban effective on the date of the doping, December 25, 2021. That ruling changes the results of the team figure skating competition from Beijing 2022, and the International Skating Union decided that USA would get moved up to gold, Japan up to silver....and Russia would drop down to bronze. We explain how the ISU's decision is possible--and who's not happy because of it.  Paris 2024 announced that it will have random ticket drops until the Games begin in order to sell out its remaining 1+ million ticket inventory.  The end of January brought decision-day for whether the Milan-Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee would commit to building a new sliding track (not IOC-recommended), or if they would put the sliding competitions at a track outside of Italy (IOC-recommended). Book Club Claire is back for our last Book Club meeting for 2022, and we're discussing Snowball's Chance: The Story of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games Squaw Valley & Lake Tahoe by David C. Antonucci. Know nothing about the 1960 Winter Olympics? Neither did we until we read this book, and it's got all sorts of fun details that are surprisingly relevant to other parts of this episode. Plus, Walt Disney was involved with the ceremonial aspect of these Games, which definitely peaked our interests. In other big news, Paris 2024 announced its mascots: The Phyrges! We've got the story behind these two symbols and our thoughts on how they'll be as mascots. We also have another chapter in our Modern Pentathlonovela and the Kamila Valieva doping situation. In our Albertville moment, Alison shares the story of the temporary stadium that housed the ceremonies - and what happened to it after the Games. Checking in with our Team Keep the Flame Alive, we have competition results and news from: Shooter Tim Sherry Beach volleyball player Kelly Cheng Table tennis player Melissa Tapper Handball player Sarah Gascon Speed skater Erin Jackson (that link goes to her Hear Her Sports interview where she talks about the differences between inline and speed skating) Figure skater Nate Bartholomay Retired luger Shiva Keshavan Marketing consultant Terrence Burns We also have some news from Milan-Cortina 2026 on the speed skating venue -- which includes another flashback to Winter 1960. NFL – National Football League – Week 10 Yesterday Washington Commanders 32, Philadelphia Eagles 21 Commanders 32, Eagles 21 – Commanders end sloppy Eagles’ perfect season 32-21 The Eagles’ bid for an undefeated season is over. The Washington Commanders turned methodical drives into scores and took advantage of turnover-prone Philadelphia to stun the Eagles 32-21 on Monday night and send them to their first loss in nine games this season. Behind Jalen Hurts, the Eagles were 8-0 for the first time in franchise history and the last team in the NFL that could make a run at Miami’s 17-0 mark in 1972 and the lone perfect season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, going 18-0 before a Super Bowl loss. The Commanders also spoiled Pittsburgh’s 11-0 start in 2020. Hurts threw for just 174 yards. NCAAMBKB – Men’s College Basketball Tonight Michigan State vs. (4) Kentucky, 7:00 p.m. (at Indianapolis)  Superhits 103.7 Cosy-FM 6:00 Eastern Michigan at Bradley, 8:00 p.m. NCAAMBKB – North Carolina, Gonzaga are 1-2 atop AP Top 25 poll North Carolina and Gonzaga are 1-2 in the first regular-season men’s college basketball poll from The Associated Press. Third-ranked Houston and fourth-ranked Kentucky picked up the remaining first-place votes in Top 25 with only slight changes from the preseason rankings. Baylor, Kansas, Duke, UCLA, Arkansas and Creighton round out the top 10. Tennessee fell 11 spots while Villanova fell out for the first time since February 2019. No. 24 Texas A&M and No. 25 Connecticut are the new additions. NCAAWBKB – Women’s College Basketball Tonight Oakland at Michigan State, 7:00 p.m. NCAAWBKB – No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 Stanford showdown set South Carolina remains the unanimous choice at No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll. The Gamecocks will face second-ranked Stanford on Sunday in the 63rd meeting between the top two teams in the poll. Texas, Iowa and UConn round out the first five. Ohio State moved up six spots to eighth after beating then-No. 5 Tennessee last week. The Lady Vols fell to 11th. Villanova and Utah entered the rankings at No. 24 and 25, replacing Princeton and South Dakota State. NCAAFB – Suspect caught in fatal shooting of 3 UVA FB players Authorities said a University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’ Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. The young men were athletes who’d been journeying through varying periods of transition in their college football careers. One was bouncing back from a season-ending injury. Another had changed positions on the team. And yet another had recently transferred in from the University of Wisconsin. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Carolina Hurricanes 3, Chicago Blackhawks 0 Hurricanes 3, Blackhawks 0 – Rookie Kochetkov gets 1st shutout, Canes beat Blackhawks 3-0 Rookie Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves for his first career shutout, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0. Jordan Martinook and Jordan Staal each had a goal and an assist for Carolina. Andrei Svechnikov scored his team-leading 12th goal, and Brent Burns had two assists. Kochetkov wasn’t heavily tested, but made some timely close-in stops in his second start this season and fifth game of his career. Chicago’s Petr Mrazek blocked 29 shots as the Blackhawks were blanked for the third time this season. Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00 p.m. NHL – Sedin twins, Luongo and Alfredsson inducted to Hall of Fame Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Canucks teammate Roberto Luongo, former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, Finnish women’s national team player Riikka Sallinen and Herb Carnegie were welcomed into the Hockey Hall of Fame as the class of 2022 on Monday. The Sedin twins and Luongo were elected in their first years of eligibility back in June, while Alfredsson had waited since 2017. The induction increased the number of Swedish players in the hall from four to seven. NBA – National Basketball Association Last Night Toronto Raptors 115, Detroit Pistons 111 Raptors 115, Pistons 111 – Blanton, Boucher lead short-handed Raptors past Pistons Dalano Banton scored 27 points and Chris Boucher added 20 as the short-handed Toronto Raptors snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Detroit Pistons 115-111. O.G. Anunoby added 19 points and seven rebounds for Toronto, which played without Fred VanVleet (non-COVID illness), Pascal Siakam (abdominal strain) and Gary Trent (hip). Rookie Jaden Ivey scored 21 for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight. Bojan Bogdanovic added 18 points. MLB – Seattle’s Rodríguez, Atlanta’s Harris voted top rookies Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez and Atlanta’s Michael Harris II, a pair of 21-year-old center fielders, are baseball’s Rookies of the Year. Rodriguez hit .284 with 28 homers, 75 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in helping the Mariners reach the postseason for the first time since 2001. He won the AL honor by receiving 29 of 30 first-place votes and one second for 148 points from a BBWAA panel. Harris batted .297 with 19 homers, 64 RBIs and 20 steals. He was voted the NL award, getting 22 firsts and eight seconds for 134 points from a different BBWAA panel. MLB – Cubs release 5-time Gold Glove outfielder Heyward The Chicago Cubs have released Jason Heyward, cutting ties with a five-time Gold Glove outfielder who never produced at the plate the way they hoped. The 33-year-old Heyward had one season left on the $184 million, eight-year contract he signed prior to the 2016 season. He hit .245 with 62 home runs over seven years with the Cubs. Heyward famously rallied teammates with a pep talk during a rain delay late in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Chicago went on to win 8-7 in 10 innings, ending a championship drought that dated to 1908. Olympics – Winter 2026 – Russian skater Valieva could miss 2026 Olympics over doping The Court of Arbitration for Sport says 16-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva faces a potential four-year doping ban which would rule her out of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. CAS has registered an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and says WADA is seeking a four-year ban to start on the date CAS makes its ruling. That would cover the next Olympics in Italy. WADA also wants Valieva to be disqualified from events including her gold-medal win in the Olympic team event in Beijing in February. Tennis – Djokovic set to be granted visa to play Australian Open Novak Djokovic is set to be granted a visa to play in next year’s Australian Open despite his high-profile deportation in January. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says it has confirmed newspaper reports that the immigration minister has overturned Djokovic’s potential three-year exclusion period from Australia. The Australian Border Force has previously said an exclusion period could be waived under certain circumstances. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has declined comment on privacy grounds. That means any announcement on Djokovic’s visa status for Australia would have to come from the 35-year-old Serbian tennis star. FIFA – World Cup – US Soccer uses rainbow crest in Qatar The U.S. Soccer Federation is using a rainbow version of its crest at the Americans’ World Cup training facility in Doha, Qatar. The federation normally uses a crest with blue lettering and red stripes but changed the stripes to seven different colors at the training facility, where workouts started ahead of the Americans’ World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21. The rainbow crest is part of the Be the Change initiative of the USSF and its players. Qatar has been criticized over attitudes towards LGBTQ fans and the treatment of migrant workers. David Perron was the only Red Wings player to score during the shootout. Detroit captain Dylan Larkin shot wide on the third attempt to give Montreal the victory. During regulation time, Larkin also failed to convert on a first-period penalty shot. Montreal’s Mike Hoffman scored two first-period goals on similar plays.  Austin Czarnik and Lucas Raymond had Detroit’s goals in regulation. NCAAFB – Georgia is new CFP No. 1, followed by Ohio St, Michigan, TCU Georgia was the new No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, followed by Ohio State, Michigan and TCU. The Bulldogs rise from three to one was no surprise after their dominant victory against the previously top-ranked Volunteers. Clemson, which was No. 4 in the selection committee’s first rankings last week, also lost. That cleared the way for changes in the top four. Ohio State stayed at two. The Buckeyes’ Big Ten rival, Michigan moved up from five to three. TCU jumped three spots to No. 4, putting the nation’s four unbeatens at the top of the rankings. Tennessee fell to No. 5. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 11 Last Night Eastern Michigan 34, Akron 28 EMU 34, Akron 28 – Eastern Michigan holds off Akron 34-28 for 6th win Austin Smith and Samson Evans each accounted for a pair of touchdowns and Eastern Michigan became bowl eligible with a 34-28 victory over Akron. Eastern Michigan (6-4, 3-3 Mid-American Conference) secured its fifth bowl appearance in six seasons and the program’s seventh overall. Smith threw a touchdown pass in each half. Evans had a 9-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and broke loose for a 23-yard score early in the third to give the Eagles a 31-14 lead. Cam Wiley got Akron close, running for 11- and 56-yard touchdowns early in the fourth quarter to pull to 31-28. Tonight Northern Illinois at Western Michigan, 7:00 p.m. Buffalo at Central Michigan, 7:00 p.m. NCAAMBKB – Michigan State among college hoops teams facing tough tests Tom Izzo is proud of the fact that Michigan State has consistently played tough nonconference schedules throughout his career. Playing challenging competition before the Big Ten season begins has prepared the Spartans for conference play and set them up in the NCAA Tournament to make eight runs to the Final Four under their Hall of Fame coach. Even Izzo acknowledged he might’ve bit off more than his unranked team could chew this year. Izzo is the first coach since at least 2009 to play two opponents ranked in the top four and two other teams in the poll in November. NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight Denver Nuggets at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics, 7:30 p.m. New Orleans Pelicans at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NBA – AP source: Suspended Kyrie Irving meets with Adam Silver A person with knowledge of the meeting says suspended Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving has met with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. The Nets banned Irving for at least five games without pay on Thursday after he refused to say he had no antisemitic beliefs. That came hours after Silver said Irving made a “reckless decision” to post a link on his Twitter feed to a film that contains antisemitic material and said he would be meeting with him within a week. They finally did on Tuesday, the person told The Associated Press, speaking on anonymity because the meeting and its details were private. NCAAWBKB – Women’s College Basketball Tonight Delaware State at (25) Michigan, 6:00 p.m. WNBA – American Brittney Griner moved to a penal colony in Russia The jailed American basketball star Brittney Griner has been moved to a penal colony in Russia. A Russian court rejected her appeal of her nine-year sentence for drug possession last month. Her legal team says Griner was transferred Nov. 4 from the detention center in Iksha and is on her way to a penal colony. They said they don’t know her exact current location or her final destination. NFL – Saturday faces daunting task in preparing Colts for Raiders Indianapolis Colts interim coach Jeff Saturday faces a dauting task this week. First, he must find a play-caller. Then he must create a game plan for this week’s game at Las Vegas. And then he still must figure out how to fix the Colts offense and specifically its offensive line. It’s a lot to ask of someone who has spent more time in a broadcast studio than on a sideline this season. But team owner Jim Irsay thinks Saturday is right guy for this Sunday — and Indy’s final eight games. MLB – Rizzo, Bassitt turn down options, among 11 now free agents First baseman Anthony Rizzo became a free agent again when he declined his $16 million option with the New York Yankees for 2023. Pitcher Chris Bassitt declined his $19 million option with the New York Mets and followed rotation mates Jacob deGrom and Taijuan Walker into free agency. They were among 11 players who became free agents Tuesday, raising the total to 151. About 33 more players are potentially eligible to go free by Thursday, joining a free agent class headed by Aaron Judge, Trea Turner, Dansby Swanson, deGrom, Carlos Correa and Xander Bogaerts.  New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, spoke about the team’s goal to re-sign slugger Aaron Judge. “Optimally, if you could wave a magic wand, we would secure Aaron Judge and retain him and have him signed and happy in the fold as soon as possible,” MLB – A’s still pursuing Oakland ballpark with eye on Las Vegas Oakland Athletics general manager David Forst says the A’s are still interested in staying in the Bay Area if a stadium deal can be completed. The A’s have been exploring building a new ballpark in Oakland or Las Vegas. Forst is in Las Vegas for baseball’s general managers meetings. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed concern about getting a deal done in Oakland. Manfred and the A’s have said a new stadium is needed to replace the aging Oakland facility. The A’s lease at the Oakland ballpark expires after the 2024 season. MLB – Cubs promote Dustin Kelly to hitting coach on Ross’ staff The Chicago Cubs have promoted Dustin Kelly to hitting coach after two seasons as the organization’s minor league hitting coordinator, one of three additions to manager David Ross’ staff announced on Tuesday. Kelly becomes the Cubs’ eighth hitting coach in 12 seasons. He replaces Greg Brown, who lasted one year. A former minor league infielder, Kelly worked as a hitting coach in the Dodgers farm system from 2018-20 before getting hired by Chicago. The Cubs also added former outfielder Jim Adduci as assistant hitting coach and Alex Smith as an assistant coach for data development and process. FIFA – World Cup – American defender Chris Richards to miss World Cup American defender Chris Richards will miss the World Cup because of an injury that has sidelined him for more than two months. He wrote on Instagram that he was “gutted.” A 22-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama, Richards debuted for the U.S. in November 2020 and has made eight international appearances. U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter is set to announce his 26-man roster Wednesday. The U.S. already was missing Atlanta defender Miles Robinson, who tore his left Achilles on May 7. FIFA – Blatter says picking Qatar as World Cup host was a ‘mistake’ Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter says picking Qatar to host the World Cup was a mistake 12 years ago. Blatter led FIFA at the time of the vote and says soccer and the World Cup are too big for a country as small as Qatar. He repeated his claim that key votes for Qatar were swayed by a 2010 meeting in Paris between then-French president Nicolas Sarkozy and FIFA vice president Michel Platini. The 86-year-old Blatter spoke with a Swiss newspaper group. It was his first major interview since being acquitted with Platini in July of financial misconduct at FIFA. Golf – PGA Tour to Houston, Champions Tour ends season in Phoenix The main tours are getting close to the end of the year. The PGA Tour goes to the Houston Open for the penultimate event of 2022. The LPGA Tour returns to Florida for its final two events. The leading 60 players are eligible for the season finale. For the PGA Tour Champions, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix wraps up the year. The $1 million prize for the Schwab Cup comes down to Steven Alker and Padraig Harrington. The European tour is in South Africa. The Nedbank Golf Challenge was canceled the past two years. Olympics – WADA forces hearing in Russian skater Valieva’s doping case The president of the World Anti-Doping Agency said Tuesday the agency has stepped in to send the Kamila Valieva doping case which shook figure skating at the Winter Olympics to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. WADA president Witold Banka alleges Russia made “no progress” toward resolving the case after a warning. The Russian anti-doping agency had indicated last month it was preparing to hold a hearing but wouldn’t make the verdict public because Valieva was only 15 at the time she tested positive. Olympics – US marathon trials for 2024 Olympics will be run in Orlando The 2024 United States Olympic marathon trials will be held along the streets in Orlando, Florida. USA Track and Field recently announced the decision. The site for the rest of the track and field trials is still being determined. The top three men and women finishers in the marathon race on Feb. 3, 2024, will earn a roster spot for the Paris Olympics held that summer. That’s provided they have met the qualifying standard. Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 overall pick last summer, had 27 points, nine rebounds and five assists in an impressive NBA debut. Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 pick last year, had 18 points and 10 assists. Cunningham’s last assist set up Isaiah Stewart for a 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left that gave the Pistons a four-point lead. Bogdanovic made two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to restore Detroit’s four-point cushion, sealing the victory. Bulls 116, Heat 108 – DeRozan scores 37, Bulls top Heat 116-108 in season opener DeMar DeRozan scored 28 of his 37 points in the second half, Ayo Dosunmu added 17 and the short-handed Chicago Bulls topped the Miami Heat 116-108 in the season-opener for both teams on Wednesday night. Nikola Vucevic scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Bulls, and Goran Dragic added 12 off the Chicago bench. Jimmy Butler scored 24 points and Tyler Herro added 23 for Miami, which got 22 from Max Strus and 12 from Bam Adebayo. Wizards 114, Pacers 107 – Beal, Wizards open season with 114-107 win over Pacers Bradley Beal scored 23 points and Kyle Kuzma added 20 as the Washington Wizards led from wire to wire, beating the rebuilding Indiana Pacers 114-107. Kristaps Porzingis added 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Wizards won consecutive season openers for the first time since 2004-05. Indiana was led by Tyrese Haliburton’s 26 points and 19 from rookie Bennedict Mathurin. The Pacers’ losing streak reached 11 games overall, including 10 to end last season. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – League Championship Series (best of 7) Yesterday Houston Astros 4, New York Yankees 2                                            (HOU leads 1-0) San Diego Padres 8, Philadelphia Phillies 5                                       (Series tied 1-1) Astros 4, Yankees 2 – Verlander Ks 11 to lead Astros over Yankees 4-2 in ALCS Justin Verlander struck out 11 in six strong innings and Yuli Gurriel, Chas McCormick and Jeremy Peña all homered to power the Houston Astros to a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees in their AL Championship Series opener. The Astros are in their sixth consecutive ALCS, looking to reach the World Series for the fourth time in that span, against a New York team in the LCS for the first time since being eliminated by Houston in 2019. The game was tied 1-all in the sixth when Gurriel connected off reliever Clarke Schmidt for a solo shot that put Houston on top. Two batters later, McCormick sent a sinker from Schmidt into right field to make it 3-1. Padres 8, Phillies 5 – Drury, Padres rally to beat Nola, Phillies 8-5, tie NLCS 1-1 Brandon Drury hit a go-ahead, two-run single during a five-run rally in the fifth inning and the San Diego Padres stunned Aaron Nola and the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5 to tie their all-wild card NL Championship Series at one game apiece. The outburst started with Padres catcher Austin Nola hitting an RBI single off his younger brother that brought the sellout, towel-twirling crowd of 44,607 at Petco Park to life. Three innings earlier, the Phillies took a 4-0 lead with a rally that included bloop hits, a sun-aided double on a gorgeous, 92-degree afternoon and some shoddy Padres defense. Tonight NY Yankees (Severino 7-3) at Houston (Valdez 17-6), 7:37 p.m.            (HOU leads 1-0) NHL – Red Wings’ Vrana enters NHL/NHLPA player assistance program Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana has entered the player assistance program of the NHL and NHL Players’ Association. The league and the union made the announcement. They did not specify why he entered the program. Vrana will be paid while he is receiving treatment. The program administrators will determine when he’s cleared to compete for the Red Wings. The 26-year-old Vrana is from the Czech Republic. He had a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win at New Jersey. He did not play in a home game two days later against the Los Angeles Kings due to personal reasons. NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Tonight New Orleans Saints at Arizona Cardinals, 8:15 p.m. NCAAFB – Notre Dame Stadium no longer place of solace under Freeman Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman understands the problem. The Fighting Irish have lost their home-field advantage. Finding the solution has proven to be challenging. Notre Dame is an inexplicable 1-2 in South Bend in Freeman’s first season, despite entering each game as a double-digit favorite. And they easily could be 0-3. They’ll have a chance to turn things around Saturday when UNLV comes to town. Notre Dame is a heavy favorite but will need to sweep its final three home games to post a winning record at Notre Dame Stadium. NCAAFB – Mississippi State freshman lineman Sam Westmoreland dies Mississippi State says freshman offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland has died at the age of 18. Westmoreland was an industrial technology major from Tupelo who would have turned 19 on Friday. The news release announcing Westmoreland’s death did not provide details but said the school was working with the athletic department, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office to determine facts and would not comment further. MSU coach Mike Leach said the athletics family was heartbroken by Westmoreland’s death, which he called sudden. Westmoreland was listed on the roster for the Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference game Saturday at No. 6 Alabama but had not played this season, according to game notes. NCAAMBKB – Wolverines add another Howard The 22nd-ranked Michigan basketball team features three Howards this season. Juwan Howard is entering his fourth season as coach, and his first with two sons on the roster. Highly touted freshman Jett Howard is expected to be in the starting lineup on the wing. Junior Jace Howard will have an opportunity to play a larger role this season as his brother’s backup. Center Hunter Dickinson put his NBA goals on hold to return for his junior season after leading the team in scoring and rebounding the previous two years. WNBA – Brittney Griner spends 32nd birthday in Russian prison Brittney Griner spent her 32nd birthday in a Russian prison, awaiting an appeal to her nine-year sentence for drug possession that’s set for next week. The WNBA star has been especially down lately, according to her lawyers. They were with her for part of her birthday on Tuesday. Attorney Maria Blagovolina says they passed along well wishes from family and friends. The WNBA star’s appeal hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25. While it’s unlikely the appeal will overturn her conviction, her lawyers hope it could lessen the sentence. NASCAR – Bell says Wallace apologized on flight home from Las Vegas Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell shared a flight home from Las Vegas, and Wallace apologized during the trip to his fellow Toyota teammate for the incident that crippled Bell’s championship chances. Bell said Wallace also apologized to the entire Toyota group in the Monday competition meeting. Wallace has been suspended one race by NASCAR for a dangerous act of retaliation that inadvertently collected Bell. He will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway for deliberately retaliating against reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Larson at Las Vegas. Wallace hooked Larson in the rear corner of his car to spin him directly into traffic, where Larson drilled Bell and ended Bell’s race. Olympics – US figure skaters still await medals from Beijing Games Eight months after finishing behind the Russians at the Winter Olympics, the U.S. team has yet to receive its medals. They do not even know whether they will be silver or gold. That’s because the Russian Anti-Doping Agency only recently finished its investigation into Kamila Valieva. Her positive doping test surfaced during the opening week of the Olympics. It led to its biggest scandal in years. RUSADA did not reveal the results of its investigation, but it did say that the next step in the process would be to hold disciplinary hearings in September or October. Former NBA player-coach Ray Scott, author of The NBA In Black And White: The Memoir of a Trailblazing NBA Player and Coach

ABOUT RAY SCOTT AND THE NBA IN BLACK AND WHITEA memoir of hard lessons learned in the racially segregated and sometimes outright racist NBA of the early '60s by celebrated NBA player and first Black Coach of the Year, Ray Scott.Ray Scott was part of the early wave of Black NBA players like Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain who literally changed how the game of professional basketball is played, leading to the tremendously popular financial blockbuster the NBA is today. Scott was a successful 6'9" forward/center after being chosen by the Detroit Pistons as the #4 pick of the 1961 NBA draft, and then again after he was named head coach of the Pistons in 1972, winning Coach of the Year in the spring of 1974-the first Black man ever to capture that honor.Scott's is a story of quiet persistence, hard work, and, most of all, respect. He credits the mentorship of NBA player and coach Earl Lloyd and talks about fellow Philly native Wilt Chamberlain and friends Muhammad Ali and Aretha Franklin, among many others. Scott has lived through one of the most turbulent times in our nation's history, especially the time of assassinations of so many Black leaders at the end of the 1960s. Through it all, his voice has remained quiet and measured, transcending all the sorrows with steadiness. This is his story, told in collaboration with well-known basketball writer, former college player, and CBA coach Charley Rosen. Racism in the world of sports is still all over the news-from Brian Flores's racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, to Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva being allowed to compete in the Olympics while African-American runner Sha'Carri Richardson was banned, to the prolonged detainment of Black WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia. And while we still have much work to do to make equality a reality, The NBA in Black and White answers the question "How did we go from there being only white players in the NBA to the highest paid athletes in the NBA being Black?" and reminds us of the progress we've made toward equal opportunity and fair compensation for people of color.Philly native John Raymond "Ray" Scott's college career began at the University of Portland. After three seasons in the professional Eastern Basketball League, he was chosen as the 4th pick in the 1961 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. He spent six years with the Pistons as a stand-out rebounder and deadly shooter from the perimeter, and another five years playing for the Baltimore Bullets and the Virginia Squires. Then, in October 1972, Scott was promoted from Assistant to Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons, thanks in part to strong support from former coach Earl Lloyd who, a decade earlier, had scouted Scott and recommended that he be the Pistons top pick. Two years later he was named NBA Coach of the Year, the first African-American to win the coveted award. From 1976 to 1979, Scott was Men's Basketball Head Coach at Eastern Michigan University. Today, he lives with his family in Eastern Michigan, not far from Detroit. This is his first book. ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE NBA IN BLACK AND WHITE"Scott, who became the first Black coach to be named NBA Coach of the Year in 1974, delivers a moving reflection on his influential career.Fans of the sport will relish Scott's insights, including how the game's been changed by the emphasis on three-point shooting.A valuable addition to hoops history." - Publishers Weekly"This is a truly wonderful book that reveals the difficulties of the quota system and all the other obstacles that African American NBA players had to face when the league began to integrate in the mid-1950s and beyond. It also tells how Ray and many other great Black players managed to achieve the fulfillment of their respective talents. Indeed, Ray was the rare successful NBA player who became a successful NBA coach. Along the way, the plight of 'ordinary' Black citizens who succeeded and/or tragically failed in facing their own racial barriers is addressed. Above all, Ray's honesty, intelligence, and deep understanding of how social injustice influences every aspect of all our collective and individual lives, makes this narrative totally relevant today. There's enough wisdom in here to enlighten and inspire even people who have little or no interest in basketball. Incredibly powerful-a must read." - Hubie Brown, NBA Coach of the Year (1978, 2004), member of the Basketball Hall of Fame"Ray Scott has chronicled his four-decades-long basketball odyssey beautifully. It is a thoughtful and well-written book about the transforming landscape of the NBA. He shares his firsthand knowledge and experiences and adds value to an era not so often discussed. I have been blessed to have known Ray, and blessed even more to have someone who trudged through the early days of the NBA take me along with him for the journey."- Marques Johnson, twelve-year NBA player, five-time All Star"I first met Ray Scott in 1965 when I was a rookie player for the Detroit Pistons. I was scared to death of the challenges I faced trying to make it in the NBA, but Ray welcomed me to the team. As one of the veterans, he organized all the players to work out and prepare for camp together. It meant the world to me, and I have never forgotten how he treated me. Ray's book brought back so many good memories from my NBA days. He was and is a leader and a wonderful example of how we should all respect, get along, and love each other. Ray is a good man."- Tom Van Arsdale, 12-year NBA player, three-time All StarGet the book here:https://www.amazon.com/NBA-Black-White-Memoir-Trailblazing/dp/164421198X

**CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of abuse, eating disorders and death by suicide.** In this episode Brenda Elsey, Lindsay Gibbs and Jessica Luther break down the figure skating doping controversy at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. They start the show, however, with Olympic moments that were fuzzy and cute. Then, they decipher what happened in the mess of the women's figure skating conclusion that started when Russian teenager Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance on February 7. They discuss everything from the troubling, yet celebrated, coach Eteri Tutberidze, to what the heck trimetazidine is and what the hell the ROC is doing with it, to the alphabet soup (WADA, RUSADA, IOC, CAS ) that is "governing" the debacle. They also talk about the harm that this fiasco has caused Valieva, as well as gold medalist Anna Shcherbakova, silver medalist Alexandra Trusova and bronze medalist Kaori Sakamoto, as well as the damaging impacts that the culture of figure skating has on it's athletes, especially teenagers. Following this discussion, you'll hear a preview of Shireen's interview with Billy Bridges, a Paralympic gold medalist and sledge hockey legend. Then, the team burns the worst of the sports this week on The Burn Pile. Next, they lift up those making sports better, including Torchbearer of the Week Sarah Nurse, Canadian women's hockey player and gold medalist who set an Olympic record of 18 points in the Beijing Games. Then, they discuss the some of the hottest topics of the 2022 Winter Games so far, including Eileen Gu, Mikaela Shiffrin and Kamila Valieva, and the ways that the commentary around these athletes is sexist, limiting and often times, just bizarre. They also discuss ski jumper uniform disqualifications, why women's hockey should stay in the Olympics and if athletes are using their platforms to speak to geopolitical issues. Following this discussion, you'll hear a preview of Lindsay's interview with Julie Kliegman, Chief Copy Editor at Sports Illustrated about trans swimmer Lia Thomas's fight to compete. Then, the team burns the worst of the sports this week in The Burn Pile.
