Financial Crisis Blame GameThe Ochelli Effect 6-5-2023 Tony ViolaRemember the 2008 Mortgage Mess? Tonight we meet a guy who was wronly accused and convicted regarding the 2008 housing disaster.Tony Viola, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland-based Realty Corporation of America, graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and has an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. Realty Corporation of America, a licensed real estate brokerage and auction services business, had offices in Ohio and Florida and over 150 team members. In 2008, Tony was indicted by a multi-jurisdictional Mortgage Fraud Task Force, alleging he stole $46 million by orchestrating the "Nation's Largest Mortgage Fraud Scheme." Following a federal conviction, Tony established his innocence at a second trial using Bates stamped federal evidence that Justice Department suppressed before the first trial, but that was provided by a whistleblower inside the prosecutor's office, the Task Force's Office Manager Dawn Pasela. In 2020, both the FBI and Justice Department admitted making materially false statements about evidence in Tony's case and he was released from jail after a decade of wrongful imprisonment. In 2022, after a Justice Department investigation found evidence of criminal activities and false statements, disbarment proceedings against former federal prosecutor Mark Bennett commenced, Disciplinary Counsel v, Bennett, case number 2022-034; DOJ Inspector General Report Number 21-005. Guest: Wendy Gillis, crime reporter After two Toronto police officers stole drugs for their personal use from evidence lockers, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated and found a lax and dated system that all but opened the door for abuse. The report calls for greater restrictions on access to evidence by officers, just as it is becoming clear that such thefts are affecting cases before the court. Michael and Christine Taylor were happily married when they joined the charismatic church called the Christian Fellowship Group in 1974. Michael became deeply involved in the group, but soon things took a sinister turn. Church leaders believed that Michael was a victim of demonic possession and performed an all-night exorcism. They sent him home and the unthinkable happened. Confusing his own wife for a demon, he attacked her, killing her violently with his bare hands. This week, Bob is joined by the creators of the “Evidence Locker” podcast, host Noel Vinson and producer Sonya Lowe. Sonya works behind the scenes to research, write, and direct each episode of the Australia-based podcast, while Noel utilizes his background as a rap-artist to narrate a new story each week. The dynamic duo chats with Bob about their accents (or lack thereof), what lockdown is like down under, and the differences in producing film vs. audio content. They then dive into the 1989 mysterious death of Cindy James in British Colombia. Cindy, a nursing school graduate, began experiencing incidents of harassment shortly after separating from her husband, ranging from creepy phone calls to apparent attempted murders, with Cindy being found drugged and tied up on multiple occasions. Police were skeptical, however, with many wondering if Cindy was staging these attacks. The harassment continued for almost a decade until Cindy was eventually found dead in an abandoned building. Despite the circumstances of her death, many still doubt that Cindy was the victim of a crime, but the truth may be lost forever. In the month of July, we are celebrating Evidence Locker's third birthday and our 150th episode. For the last episode in our Blockbuster series, we explore the true crime case behind the Australian Noir film, Snowtown. John Bunting, Robert Wagner and James Vlassakis committed a series of brutal murders in Adelaide between 1992 and 1999. The remains of eight victims were found in six acid-filled barrels in a disused bank vault in the small town of Snowtown, which is why the case is known as Snowtown (or the 'Bodies in the Barrels' case). A possible 12 people lost their lives to the group, who were on a mission to ‘cleanse' society. Their victims were all known to them: neighbours, friends, family… Warning: This episode contains references to child abuse and details of severe torture of adult victims by homophobic killers and would not be suitable for sensitive listeners. In the month of July, we are celebrating Evidence Locker's third birthday and our 150th episode. With this in mind, we decided on a Blockbuster theme. This week we look into the true crime case behind Steven Spielberg's film, Munich. Palestinian militant group Black September took nine 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team hostage during the Summer Olympics of 1972. The world watched as events unfolded, and it ended in the death of all the hostages and a German police officer, as well as five of the eight terrorists. To avenge their murders, Operation Wrath of God was born, a covert mission to take out everyone who had played a part in the Munich Massacre. In the month of July, we are celebrating Evidence Locker's third birthday and our 150th episode. In the spirit of celebration, we decided on a blockbuster theme. To kick things off, we look into the true crime case behind the film, The French Connection, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Film Editing, and Best Writing in 1971. The French Connection was a real-life case, during which a team of investigators busted a drug-smuggling ring into the USA in the early 1960s. Clifford Bartholomew, a 40 year old family man, went on a killing rampage in the quiet rural setting of Hope Forest, South Australia. His 10 victims were all family members, making him Australia's worst family mass murderer.Clifford murdered his wife; his sister-in-law; his 7 children, ranging in age from 4-19 years; and finally, he remembered his 18 month old nephew who slept through the horror. He walked up the hallway to his cot and shot him at point blank range, a dummy in his mouth and his face down in the pillow. All this was carried out with a .22 single shot rifle. That meant, Clifford had to shoot, empty, reload every time, giving him plenty of time to stop.Clifford would only be charged with his wife's murder. A murder conviction was a mandatory death sentence at the time. So how did Clifford get out of jail in only 7.5 years? Thank you to Sonya and Noel from the Evidence Locker Podcast for joining me to discuss the case of Ivan Milat aka The Backpack Killer. You can check out their show wherever you get your favorite podcasts. Ivan Milat was a road worker who killed seven backpackers in the Belanglo state forest in the early 1990s. Since his death questions loom on how many other victims he is responsible for; because he supposedly made his first kill in his 40's. This leads investigators to believe there may have been victims as far back as the 1970s.
