Welcome to worlds where cunning foxes outsmart bears and humans, where people are turned into wolves, where ogres (stállus) terrorize communities until outwitted, where undead creatures of the sea (rávgas) lure others to their demise. These worlds are illuminated in more than 300 folktales and legends that make up the most extensive compilation of Sámi narratives recorded from Sámi storytellers ever published in English translation: Sámi Folktales from the Near and Far Worlds, originally recorded by Just Knud Qvigstad and Isak Saba and translated by Barbara Sjoholm. Sjoholm is joined here in conversation with Lise Lunge-Larsen.Barbara Sjoholm is an award-winning translator and author of many books, including From Lapland to Sápmi: Collecting and Returning Sámi Craft and Culture and The Palace of the Snow Queen: Winter Travels in Lapland and Sápmi. Among her translations are By the Fire: Sámi Folktales and Legends, collected by Emilie Demant Hatt.Lise Lunge-Larsen is the award-winning author of The Troll with No Heart in His Body and Seven Ways to Trick a Troll. She lives in Duluth, where trolls can still be found if you really look for them. Praise for the book:"Beautifully written, the introduction to Sámi Folktales from the Near and Far Worlds captivates the reader from the very beginning with poetic descriptions of the Sámi landscape, the historical context and thematic characteristics of the storytelling tradition in Sápmi, and an exploration of the relationship between Just Knud Qvigstad and Isak Saba. This book is a valuable collection of Sámi stories."—Line Esborg, Head of Norwegian Folklore Archives, University of Oslo"For decades, these stories have provided contemporary Sámi literature with drama, detail, and inspiration. This collection is a treasure trove for every writer and reader to explore, and it's a gift to the English language that these folktales are now translated."—Elin Anna Labba, author of The Home of the Drowned and The Rocks Will Echo Our Sorrow: The Forced Displacement of the Northern Sámi"The deeper you dig into this collection, the more satisfying it gets. Barbara Sjoholm's introduction is worth its weight in gold."—Lise Lunge-LarsenSámi Folktales from the Near and Far Worlds, collected by Just Knud Qvigstad and Isak Saba and translated by Barbara Sjoholm, is available from University of Minnesota Press. Hosts Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen recount Finnish corporal Aimo Koivunen's March 18, 1944 ordeal during the Continuation War: leading a seven-man long-range ski reconnaissance patrol in Soviet-controlled Lapland at −20°C, he collapses under exhaustion during a Soviet encirclement and, unable to dose properly with mittens on, swallows the patrol's full bottle of Pervitin—30 tablets (90 mg) of methamphetamine. After a brief surge, he develops psychosis, is disarmed by teammates, and skis on “autopilot,” later waking alone after covering about 100 km. He mistakenly skis through a Soviet camp, burns down a cabin by lighting a fire on the floor, survives on pine buds, steps on a landmine, and spends a week in a ditch before rescue in early April—two and a half weeks later—with a 200 bpm resting heart rate, 43 kg body weight, and frostbite requiring toe amputations. The episode adds WWII stimulant history and argues war repeatedly pushes armies toward chemical solutions. 00:00 Podcast Intro 00:28 Lapland Night Chase 02:28 Pervitin Decision 03:21 Finland Versus USSR 07:07 Aimo Early Life 11:43 Elite Ski Scouts 15:43 Ambush And Escape 21:00 What Is Pervitin 26:14 Pervitin Kicks In 27:24 Psychosis Takes Hold 30:17 Disarmed and Blackout Skiing 31:43 Autopilot Navigation West 34:48 Soviet Camp Close Call 36:16 Cabin Fire Hallucinations 37:10 Crash Hunger and Landmine 38:51 Week in the Ditch 40:31 Rescue and Aftermath 43:02 Life After the War 44:02 Story Published and Legacy 45:26 War and Drugs Through History 48:40 Limits of Human Will 50:29 Closing and Listener Support Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ REFERENCES Koivunen, Aimo — Personal memoir account published in Kansa Taisteli (1978). In this short Listener Q&A episode, I'm tackling a thoughtful question from Miranda that more of us should probably be asking — how do you find cultural experiences that are both authentic and environmentally responsible when you travel in Europe?I share practical ways to travel more consciously — from choosing locally owned accommodations and guides to supporting small restaurants and seeking out truly local experiences. I also talk about eco-certifications — and why they don't always tell the full story — plus a few simple ways to be a more responsible traveler without overcomplicating things. Then I shift gears and answer a second question from Miranda about traveling to Finland's Lapland region, including why timing matters and where to start your research if it's on your list. It's a short episode, but one packed with ideas to help you travel more meaningfully. And maybe think a little differently about the choices you make along the way.Got a question you want answered?Head over to wanderyourway.com/podcast and fill out the form!Note: These Listener Q&A episodes don't have a companion blog post, so you'll only find this one in your favorite podcast app. Happy listening!Important links: How To Travel Sustainably in Europe: Inspiring Tips From Carolyn S. 「快樂是對自己的打氣!」 https://chiachenchang.wordpress.com
In this Company Update, we are joined by Thomas Credland, President and CEO of Valkea Resources (TSX.V: OZ | OTCQB: OZBKF). Thomas provides an insider's perspective on the massive shifts occurring in Finland's mining landscape following the recent ~$3 billion consolidation of the Lapland Greenstone Belt by Agnico Eagle. Having been part of the team during the world-class Ikkari discovery at Rupert Resources, Thomas discusses what Valkea has planned to systematically explore its own expansive land package. Key Discussion Points: The Agnico Eagle Effect: An analysis of how the recent consolidation of Rupert Resources and Aurion Resources by Agnico Eagle validates the prospectivity of the district and creates a "slipstream" for junior explorers. Strategic Land Positioning: Why being the second-largest landholder in the Lapland Greenstone Belt puts Valkea in a prime position as the region undergoes rapid development. Systematic Exploration Methods: Insights into the "base of till" geochemical drilling strategy that led to the Ikkari discovery and how it is being deployed across Valkea's high-priority targets. Priority Targets and Catalysts: A look at the Paana and Rover properties, including the upcoming 10,000-meter diamond drilling program aimed at uncovering the next standalone deposit. Funding and Strategic Partnerships: Thomas addresses the company's current treasury, budget flexibility, and the philosophy behind maintaining independence versus bringing in a strategic partner. A few weeks back, we asked you to weigh in on a question that's been on our mind a lot lately: Who are the Zohran Mamdanis of Europe, and when, pray tell, are they going to give our beloved, ailing continent a much-needed shake-up? As it turns out, that's a complicated question. This week's guest, Brussels-based journalist Dave Keating, says that the decks are stacked against insurgent outsiders like the New York mayor – yet we need them more than ever. We had a long-overdue chat with Dave about what might be preventing a charismatic, insurgent figure on the left from taking off in the EU, and we also talked about a few of the leaders you wrote in to share with us. (Of course, keep us posted of any changemakers cropping up in your country at hello@europeanspodcast.com.)We're also talking about a controversial new law in Germany introducing voluntary military service in the country for men under the age of 45. We recorded this segment a few hours before the news that young men will not have to seek permission for long stints abroad after all; you can read updated reporting here. We also unpack Netflix's failed legal challenge to EU regulations that led to a flood of funding for European TV and film production. A burning question has now been answered: yes, the US streaming giant really does have to set aside a decent budget for francophone Belgian content. This week's Inspiration Station recommendations are the viral videos emerging from Zara Larsson's tour and Juhani Karila's book Summer Fishing in Lapland, brought to our attention by listener Monika.Resources for this episode:Dave Keating's websiteDave's book The Owned ContinentUK Green Party leader Zack Polanski on the BBC's Political Thinking“Why a legal challenge by Netflix and Disney in Belgium could have huge implications for European producers” - Screen Daily, 14 May 2025“Forget Netflix — YouTube is our main rival, top French broadcaster says” - Politico Europe, 3 April 2026“Reading for a star: Meet the Portuguese teenager influencer helping kids to pick up books” - Euronews, 18 March 2026Can't get enough of us? Send us a textIn this episode of the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast, host Angela Nicholson speaks with Kaisa Sirén, a photographic artist from Finnish Lapland, whose work is rooted in intentional camera movement (ICM). With a background in photojournalism, Kaisa shares how she moved away from traditional documentary work to embrace abstract photography, allowing herself the freedom to explore emotion, movement and mood.Based inside the Arctic Circle, Kaisa draws inspiration from Lapland's eight seasons and the unique quality of light each one brings. She reveals why the polar night is her favourite time to shoot and how nature's changes guide her creative process.Kaisa also discusses her journey from experimenting with ICM on a foggy trip to Iceland to becoming a full-time artist, teacher and gallery owner. Her work encourages photographers to let go of control, embrace surprise and allow creativity to lead.Angela and Kaisa talk about the challenges photographers face when learning ICM, why processing matters, and how to build confidence when showing your work. With warmth and honesty, Kaisa shares her experiences of exhibiting internationally, opening her own gallery, and balancing freelance photojournalism with artistic expression.Whether you're curious about ICM, looking to grow as a photographer or simply seeking creative motivation, this episode is filled with insight and inspiration from a life shaped by light, landscape and artistic freedom.TakeawaysLetting go of technical perfection can open the door to genuine creative expression.Abstract photography encourages personal storytelling beyond literal images.Nature, seasons and light are powerful sources of creative inspiration.Building confidence is essential when exhibiting or presenting your work.Experimentation and play are key when learning new photography techniques.Managing creative energy means learning to say no to projects that don't align.Connect with KaisaWebsiteInstagram (ICM)Instagram (Art)FacebookSupport the show

This month we were delighted to be joined by Tom Royer who is a Visiting Researcher at the Arctic Centre and a Doctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Law at University of Lapland. Tom's work revolves around commercial space ports in the arctic from a more-than-human perspective. This work combines critical legal studies, multispecies justice, and extractivism. These space ports are hubs where commercial spacecraft are stored, worked on, launched, and re-entered (sometimes whole, sometimes not). The Arctic is not a new venue for commercial space activities, with some ports having a more than 50-year history. This is partially because satellites orbiting the poles can circle the globe in a single day. Tom opens a whole world to us in relation to commercial space ports and gives us a lot of food for thought in terms of impacts of these operations. Tom would like to make sure listeners are aware that everything he says during the episode is his own critical interpretations rather than simple factual statements. While his arguments map to onto existing critical literature, they are still his own interpretation of his and stand as supported analytical claims. Want to learn more about Tom's work? Better than we could have hoped for. Her number one sport continues to be water polo. She also joined the school concert band and jazz band. She has made a lot of friends and is popular in her year.Jacqui manages to train as a surgeon while fitting in diving trips to Thailand, Cayman, Cuba and the Red Sea. We've told you about Tori's sporting prowess, and at number 5 in the world, she is not doing badly! The boys have a hamster.Script 2It was snowing. It was always snowing at Christmas. December, in my memory, is white as Lapland, although there were no reindeers. But there were cats. Patient, cold and callous, our hands wrapped in socks, we waited to snowball the cats. Sleek and long as jaguars and horrible-whiskered, spitting and snarling, they would slide and sidle over the white back-garden walls, and the lynx-eyed hunters, Jim and I, fur-capped and moccasined trappers from Hudson Bay, off Mumbles Road, would hurl our deadly snowballs at the green of their eyes.Script 311 a.m. Office. Oh my God. Daniel Cleaver just sent me a message. Message Jones: You appear to have forgotten your skirt. As I think is made perfectly clear in your contract of employment, staff are expected to be fully dressed at all times. CleaveHah! Undeniably flirtatious. Have never messaged Daniel Cleaver before but brilliant thing about messaging system is you can be really quite cheeky and informal, even to your boss. Also can spend ages practising. This is what I sent:Script 4The finger pointed from the grave to him, and back again."No, Spirit! Oh no, no!"The finger still was there."Spirit!" he cried, tight clutching at its robe, "hear me!I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse. Why show me this, if I am past all hope!"For the first time the hand appeared to shake. We'd love your feedback - and if you listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, hit the follow button today!**Listen to all of our podcasts here - you can also watch on YouTube, or say to your smart speaker "Play How Do You Say That?!"About our guests: Katy Maw has been voicing for about a quarter of a century after becoming a classically trained actor in London. Imagine being jailed for opening the worst Christmas park in history. False advertising is no joke in the UK, as we learn in the tragedy of the 2008 Lapland New Forest. Speaking of phonies, ever heard of the Minnesota Iceman? How about Baby Jesus Theft? Merry Christmas you beautiful people! It's our last episode of the year and it's packed in like 50 elves in a single Christmas stocking. We start the show with Santa Claus is Not Coming To Town and Todd Polte shares the story of how he found out the truth about Saint Nick.Next up it's our yearly visit to see Shelli and Frank Arnold's Christmas village. It's a spectacular sight and if you check out my facebook page there should be some pictures there. Then it's Where Are You Christmas, and Bob Baker looks at Christmas in Lapland. This episode's version of A Christmas Carol is one of the worst yet. It's a modern day version with Dean Cain and it's just awful. Here's a link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt37266428/?ref_=fn_t_10Ever wondered what the term 'Guv'nor' means, well Bob Baker is going to explain it all for you in Do You Hear What I Hear.Check out Bob's podcast here: https://4fpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Then it's The Christmas Quiz and you can test your Christmas knowledge against Jeanie Mulligan from Ireland. It was a low scoring episode for both of us.This episodes recommendation is I'm Not Complaing with Robin and Juno. Each week my two young daughters aged 10 and 5, tell jokes, talk about what they've been up to and argue. I think you'll enjoy it.Here's a link: anchor.fm/notcomplainingGet in touch:Email: totalchristmas@gmail.comWeb: totalchristmaspodcast.comMerry Christmas!

HELLOOOO 6 O'CLOCKERS HAPPY LAST RADIO SHOW FOR THE YEARRRR!! And what a show it was... we had Raye call through to have a chat, we spoke to Santa's Elf from Lapland and told us what goes on in the North Pole. We had a 2025 wrapped and counted how many times we did things throughout the year, think how many times Jackie said "aye" and Kyle said "just so you you know" and you'd be surprised how many times we did a few things.. Thanks for listening this year! Catch you a in 2026!!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Back in late February and early March, I spent a week in Rovaniemi exploring, dog sledding, riding on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, freezing in the cold as I witnessed the Northern Lights dance above my head, meeting Santa, and even doing a polar plunge into a lake before running to the sauna. After 7 days in Rovaniemi, here are some things I learned and top travel tips for visiting Lapland Finland in the winter. Let's talk about the best travel tips for Rovaniemi in winter! Andrew Zimmern is an Emmy-winning TV host, James Beard Award–winning chef, and one of the most influential food personalities in the world. Renowned for his adventurous spirit and groundbreaking show “Bizarre Foods,” Andrew has dedicated his life to exploring global cultures through their cuisines. Beyond being a culinary trailblazer, he is a passionate advocate for food as a connector and healer, working to address hunger and sustainability both locally and globally. Andrew's curiosity, honesty, and genuine drive to make the world a better (and tastier) place set him apart, whether he's sharing a meal with reindeer herders in Lapland or with friends at home. Takeaways: Food as a Universal Language: Andrew believes food has the power to heal, connect, and break down barriers – sharing a meal brings out the shared humanity between people regardless of background. Purpose-Driven Passion: Despite monumental success, Andrew's “because” is rooted in giving back, making amends, and never ceasing to be curious about the world—a relentless pursuit to make a difference through storytelling and action. Eating for the Future: Through his new “Blue Food Cookbook,” Andrew advocates for sustainable, ocean-derived foods, arguing that diversifying and responsibly sourcing our diets is paramount to solving global issues from hunger to climate change. Sound Bites: “If we diversify our diets, we can save this planet. We can save families.” (Andrew Zimmern) “Co-regulating with human beings before operationalizing with them is the most crucial thing that you can do.” (Andrew Zimmern) “We are universally humanized by that experience... sharing food is a neutral ground over which we can communicate with each other, and it has immense value.” (Andrew Zimmern) Connect & Discover Andrew: Website: andrewzimmern.com Instagram: @chefaz Facebook: @AndrewZimmern YouTube: @andrewzimmerndotcom Book: The Blue Food Cookbook
