Back in late February and early March, I spent a week in Rovaniemi exploring, dog sledding, riding on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, freezing in the cold as I witnessed the Northern Lights dance above my head, meeting Santa, and even doing a polar plunge into a lake before running to the sauna. After 7 days in Rovaniemi, here are some things I learned and top travel tips for visiting Lapland Finland in the winter. Let's talk about the best travel tips for Rovaniemi in winter! Coy Jandreau & John Humphrey react to Sisu (2022), the brutal and stylish Finnish action film written and directed by Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports, Big Game). Set during the final days of World War II, Sisu has become a modern cult favorite thanks to its over-the-top action, striking visuals, and a near-mythic one-man-army protagonist. The story follows Aatami Korpi, played by Jorma Tommila (known for Rare Exports and Big Game), a quiet prospector with a terrifying past. When he strikes gold in the Lapland wilderness, he attracts the attention of Nazi soldiers led by the ruthless SS Officer Bruno Helldorf, played by Aksel Hennie (The Martian, Headhunters). What follows is a relentless warpath of retribution as Aatami single-handedly takes on an entire platoon determined to steal his fortune. Supporting performances include Jack Doolan (The Boys, Marcella) as the vicious Wolfgang, Mimosa Willamo (Aurora, Bodom) as Aino, one of the women captured by the Nazis, and Onni Tommila (Rare Exports) in a memorable minor role. Iconic and highly searched scenes from Sisu include the minefield sequence, Aatami's insane underwater knife fight, the tractor convoy ambush, the hanging escape, and the over-the-top plane finale that cements Korpi as one of the toughest action heroes of the past decade. With its grindhouse energy and jaw-dropping stunts, Sisu is a blood-soaked ride that blends spaghetti western vibes with '80s action excess. Andrew Zimmern is an Emmy-winning TV host, James Beard Award–winning chef, and one of the most influential food personalities in the world. Renowned for his adventurous spirit and groundbreaking show “Bizarre Foods,” Andrew has dedicated his life to exploring global cultures through their cuisines. Beyond being a culinary trailblazer, he is a passionate advocate for food as a connector and healer, working to address hunger and sustainability both locally and globally. Andrew's curiosity, honesty, and genuine drive to make the world a better (and tastier) place set him apart, whether he's sharing a meal with reindeer herders in Lapland or with friends at home. Takeaways: Food as a Universal Language: Andrew believes food has the power to heal, connect, and break down barriers – sharing a meal brings out the shared humanity between people regardless of background. Purpose-Driven Passion: Despite monumental success, Andrew's “because” is rooted in giving back, making amends, and never ceasing to be curious about the world—a relentless pursuit to make a difference through storytelling and action. Eating for the Future: Through his new “Blue Food Cookbook,” Andrew advocates for sustainable, ocean-derived foods, arguing that diversifying and responsibly sourcing our diets is paramount to solving global issues from hunger to climate change. Sound Bites: “If we diversify our diets, we can save this planet. We can save families.” (Andrew Zimmern) “Co-regulating with human beings before operationalizing with them is the most crucial thing that you can do.” (Andrew Zimmern) “We are universally humanized by that experience... sharing food is a neutral ground over which we can communicate with each other, and it has immense value.” (Andrew Zimmern) Connect & Discover Andrew: Website: andrewzimmern.com Instagram: @chefaz Facebook: @AndrewZimmern YouTube: @andrewzimmerndotcom Book: The Blue Food Cookbook

Patrick Highsmith, Chairman & Co-Founder of Firefox Gold (TSX.V:FFOX - OTCQB:FFOXF - FSE:FIY), joins me to discuss strong initial results from the company's 10,000m drill program at the Mustajärvi Project in Finland's Lapland Greenstone Belt. Key Points • First Hole High-Grade - 9.5m of 9.1 g/t Au and 11.2m of 7.2 g/t Au from the furthest step-out (280m SW), expanding the East Zone. • Consistent Success Rate - All four holes in this release hit significant gold mineralization, continuing the project's impressive 79% hit rate. • Geophysics-Driven Growth - Fixed loop electro-magnetic (FLEM) geophysical survey highlights new conductive targets linked to gold-bearing pyrite. • Next Steps - Over half the program remains, with drilling expanding to the northeast and southwest before shifting toward resource definition in 2026. Send us a textMargie Goldsmith, author of Becoming a Badass: From Fearful to Fierce, suggests "do one thing every day that scares you" – a mantra that transformed her into the adventure-seeking "badass" she is today. She shares captivating stories from her journeys across more than 100 countries, revealing how memorable travel experiences often arise from unexpected human connections. We start in the remote mountain paths of Bhutan, where Margie found herself teaching American camp songs to fascinated schoolchildren. In Morocco, what began as local women laughing at her marathon training outfit evolved into a joyous mountain-top celebration. Her tales take us to Mongolia, where an 85-year-old toothless horseman (the country's fastest racehorse rider) led her across vast plains, and to Easter Island, where she recounts the dangerous traditional Birdman competition where participants risk their lives.Whether she's distributing harmonicas to children in developing nations, playing blues with an Acadian women's drum corps in Canada, or exchanging personal items with a mountain guide in Argentina despite having no common language, her tales ring with authenticity, and resonate decades later. From following a Finnish reindeer herder through Lapland's snowy forests to navigating past aggressive elephant seals in Antarctica, Margie demonstrates how facing fears leads to extraordinary experiences and personal growth. This engaging conversation, including many of Lea's travel tales as well, will inspire you to seek authentic connections in your travels – and challenge yourself, as Margie does. As she proves through her harmonica performance ending the episode, it's never too late to develop new passions and continue growing through travel and creative expression._____Margie Goldsmith is an award-winning writer, musician, and author of Becoming a Badass: From Fearful to Fierce, available in print, Kindle and audiobook, with Margie narrating (including some of her music!). Think you can hear the difference between tuli, tuuli, and tulli? We dive into the sounds, rhythm, and real-life phrases that make Finnish surprisingly learnable—and endlessly fun—when you know where to start. With our friend Evelina guiding pronunciation and cultural nuance, we pull together a traveler's toolkit you can use the moment you land: simple greetings (hei, moikka), how to say sorry and excuse me, the “please” workaround with kiitos, and the power duo missä on… and on to find bathrooms, train stations, airports, cafes, and more.We keep things practical and warm. You'll learn to order confidently—yksi kahvi/tee/vesi, kiitos—and to spot the words that unlock your day: vessa, juna-asema, lentoasema, kahvila, ravintola. We also share the secret sauce to sounding local: noniin, the multi-tool filler that fits nearly every moment, from rallying your friends to nodding along with a story. Along the way, we taste our way through Finland: the comfort of karjalanpiirakka, the sweetness of pulla, the debate over salmiakki, and why Fazer chocolate sits perfectly between Swiss and Belgian styles. Expect pronunciation tips on double letters and the ä vowel, plus the legendary phrase kuusi palaa that proves context is everything.Beyond language, we celebrate what keeps us returning: Santa's Lapland roots, reindeer on quiet roads, the wow of the northern lights, and the radical shift between midnight sun and winter darkness. These rhythms shape how Finnish feels in your mouth and in your day. Whether you're planning a first trip to Helsinki or polishing your phrasebook for a Lapland adventure, this guide helps you speak clearly, order kindly, and enjoy more of what makes Finland special. If you loved this, follow The Romies, subscribe for more traveler-friendly language guides, and leave a review—what Finnish word will you try first? Thanks for your ongoing support!http://paypal.me/TheROAMiesAlexa and RoryThe ROAMiesPlease subscribe, rate and share our podcast! In this conversation recorded live at Shakespeare and Company, travel writer Monisha Rajesh talks about her new book Moonlight Express: Around the World by Night Train. From Paris to Istanbul, Scotland to India, the United States to Lapland, Rajesh explores the romance and realities of sleeper trains—where the carriages, the landscapes, and above all, the people become the story. She shares how her love of rail travel began in India, why night trains are enjoying a resurgence amid the climate crisis, and what it means to travel as a woman, a mother, and a writer in a turbulent world. Alongside the practicalities of packing eye masks and hot water bottles, Rajesh reflects on the communities that form in dining cars, the unexpected intimacy of train travel, and the way technology, politics, and global events shape the journeys we take.Buy Moonlight Express: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/moonlight-expressMonisha Rajesh is a British journalist whose writing has appeared in Time magazine, the New York Times, and Vanity Fair. Shannon Airport says it hopes to be able to make an announcement regarding new routes in the coming weeks. The Clare base expects to see almost 60,000 passengers pass through its gates this August Bank Holiday Weekend which is 10% up on the same period last year. Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine says they're always working to find ways to fly to new destinations.

In this interview, we introduce Tero Kosonen, Chairman & CEO of FinEx Metals (TSX.V:FINX), a newly listed exploration company with five projects in northern Finland, highlighted by the Ruoppa Project. FinEx is part of the NewQuest group, known for backing discovery‑driven exploration companies like Headwater Gold and Inflection Resources. Key discussion points: Strategic land position: Ruoppa lies just 17 km from Agnico Eagle's Kittilä Mine and near Rupert Resources' high‑grade Ikkari discovery. Exploration progress: Four years of groundwork including geophysics, trenching (highlight grab sample of 95.1 g/t Au), and top‑of‑bedrock drilling. Upcoming catalysts: A fully permitted maiden drill program starting in days (12-14 holes, ~2,500m) with results expected by mid‑September to early October. Strong team & infrastructure: Led by experienced Finnish geologists with excellent government relationships and support, operating in a region with roads, power, and year‑round access. Portfolio beyond gold: Additional permitted projects include nickel‑PGM‑cobalt targets in eastern Lapland with potential for partnerships. FinEx is well‑funded (~C$4M treasury) and positioned in one of the world's most prospective yet underexplored belts. Investors are watching closely for early drill results that could signal a new discovery. If you have any follow up questions for Tero please email us. Fleck@kereport.com and Shad@kereport.com. Interview with Noora Ahola, President & CEO of Mawson Finland Ltd.Recording date: 21st July 2025Mawson Finland, a TSX Venture-listed exploration company, is positioning itself as a compelling investment opportunity through its Rajapalot gold-cobalt project in Northern Finland's established Lapland mining region. The company, which spun out from Mawson Gold in 2023, offers investors exposure to 867,000 ounces of gold and 4,311 tons of cobalt in one of the world's most stable mining jurisdictions. The appointment of CEO Noora Ahola represents a strategic advantage for navigating Finland's complex regulatory environment. Her 12-year tenure with Finnish environmental administration provides crucial insight into permitting processes that often challenge international mining companies. "Working for the authority as an authority was very important. To get that kind of background is good for this job because it's all about the permitting," Ahola explained, emphasizing the importance of regulatory expertise and local community acceptance.Project economics appear increasingly attractive given current market conditions. The 2023 Preliminary Economic Assessment was conducted at $1,700 per ounce gold, while current prices exceed $3,300, suggesting substantial improvement in returns. At $2,000 gold, the internal rate of return increases from 27% to 37%, demonstrating significant leverage to metal price appreciation.Recent drilling campaigns totaling 22.8 kilometers over two winter seasons have identified additional ounces not yet incorporated into resource estimates. The company faces a strategic decision within the next two months between updating the current assessment or advancing directly to prefeasibility study level. The cobalt component provides additional strategic value beyond traditional economics. As a designated EU critical and strategic mineral, cobalt offers potential for accelerated permitting timelines not exceeding 24 months and access to specialized European funding mechanisms. This dual-commodity approach positions Mawson Finland advantageously within European supply chain security initiatives while providing exposure to gold's monetary premium amid ongoing currency debasement concerns.Sign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

The $400m investment announced last month has seen a fourth aircraft added to Shannon, along with three new routes to Madeira, Lapland and Madrid. Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine says it's an exciting new chapter for the region.

An Irish airline has announced a new based aircraft and three additional routes at Shannon Airport. Ryanair has confirmed that its fourth based aircraft at the facility will enable it to run services to Lapland, Madeira and Madrid from Winter 2025/26. Extra flights have also been added to existing routes to Alicante, Edinburgh, Krakow, Lanzarote, Manchester and Wroclaw. The announcement is expected to boost Ryanair's annual passenger numbers through Shannon per annum by 20%, or 100,000, to over 1.6 million, while supporting 1,500 local jobs. The airline's Irish Growth Plan states its intention to boost its Shannon passenger numbers to three million and its number of aircraft to six by 2030. Ryanair Chief Commercial Officer Jason McGuinness has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons only a shift in national aviation policy can bring about a further increase in passenger traffic through the Midwest base.

How has Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland, become a global hub for the Christmas economy? Known as the official home of Father Christmas, Lapland attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year - generating significant revenue. We head to the most popular Christmas spot, Rovaneimi, to hear how a resort there benefits from this tourism. And the head of the tourist board, Sanna Kärkkäinen, tells us how records are about to be broken.Presented and produced by Izzy Greenfield Reporter: Erika Benke(Picture: Lapland at night, showing illuminated buildings. Though we may celebrate some of the same holidays across regions and countries, we all do them so differently. Understanding those differences can help us to understand each other, it adds beauty to the season, and might even give you a new destination for your wishlist. This year I'm chatting about holiday traditions with Samuel Dabinett, the GM of the famed Park Hyatt Sydney, Urban Axelsson from Swedish Lapland, and Gustavo Brana, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Urban shares stories from the Arctic Circle, while Samuel and Gustavo tell us how it feels to celebrate Christmas and New Years in the middle of summer. We chat food, traditions, fireworks, and special experiences galore. So my friends, Salute, Cheers, and Skal. I hope you have a joyous holiday season ahead, be safe, thank you, thank you for listening and for all your support, and please enjoy this festive episode of Luxury Travel Insider.
