Business schools are among the most coveted higher educational institutions. Students go through some of the most competitive exams and pay significant fees because they hope that at the end of their degree, they will get a great job.Yet, the onerous process of finding, soliciting and bringing dozens of companies to campuses each year falls mostly on final-year students, who are part of elected/selected placement committees. For as long as we can remember, these committees have always been accused of bias, arrogance and powerplay by other students.Yet, the fact also remains that those on the placement committees sacrifice a significant part of their education and grades in order to run a great job-matching process for their entire batch.Should they, though? In the US, for instance, most leading B-schools have their professional teams that run the entire campus hiring process instead of students. Finding quality jobs for hundreds of students each year is a full-time job.In India, too, many colleges are gradually coming around to the same POV.IIM Kozhikode has transitioned the process from students to faculty. Ellen Van Oosten is Professor of Organization Behavior at Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. She's also the co-author of one of the best books we've read about human behaviour. Helping People Change, written by Richard Boyatzis, Melvin Smith and Ellen Van Oosten was Henley Business School's coaching book of the year in 2020. And we are unsurprised, because by taking a human-first approach to change, it turns most conventional thinking about organisational change management on its head. In this episode, Jen, Dom and Cat chat with Ellen to hear what she's learned about human behaviour over the course of her career. They discuss how organisations can better help their internal stakeholders not only shift behaviour for the long-term but also navigate the continuous change that marks the 2020s. Takeaways Continuous change is a prevalent and ongoing experience in the workplace, with many organisations undergoing restructuring and leadership changes. Successful change requires individuals to have a sense of agency and to feel a personal connection to the desired future state. Communication plays a crucial role in change management, particularly in articulating goals and objectives and fostering a shared understanding of how individuals can contribute to the organization's strategy. The failure rate of change programmes remains high, indicating a need for a more empathetic and human-centered approach to change management. Empathy and emotional intelligence are essential skills for leaders and communicators to cultivate in order to create supportive and engaging environments for change. Positive emotion is needed to thrive and flourish. It's about dreams, not just goals. Build resonant relationships through clarity, connection, and compassion. About Ellen Van Oosten Ellen B. Van Oosten, Ph.D. is Professor in the Department of Organizational Behavior and Faculty Director of Executive Education at the Case Weatherhead School of Management. She is also Director of the Coaching Research Lab, a scholar-practitioner collaboration to advance coaching research founded in 2014. Her research interests include coaching, leadership development, emotional intelligence and women's leadership in STEM fields.  She teaches in the MBA, Executive MBA and directs the Weatherhead Coach Certificate Program, the Leadership Institute for Women in STEM and Manufacturing Program and several company specific programs.  She is also the author of numerous academic and practitioner articles and co-author of the award-winning book - Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth – with colleagues Richard Boyatzis, PhD and Melvin Smith, PhD.  She has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Dayton and a MBA and PhD from Case Western Reserve University.   Find Ellen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ellenbrooksvanoosten/ Ellen's website: https://case.edu/weatherhead/about/faculty-and-staff-directory/ellen-van-oosten HBR article: https://hbr.org/2019/09/coaching-for-change 5 Training Mistakes that Inhibit Lasting Change:  http://tinyurl.com/y6qeh8uw . In today's episode, I'm speaking with writing coach, Jonathan Reitz, who is the author of an article in our latest issue “Technology & AI ~ Will it support or replace human coaching?" His article is entitled:  The Revolution of AI in Coaching ~There's nothing artificial about it.Using a chatbot or other artificial intelligence source, a coach offers a client benefits that would not be possible without technology. Large language models – like the core algorithm behind ChatGPT and GPT-4 – offer statistically plausible suggestions or conversational prompts that frame a coaching conversation.Coaches might use these tools to prepare for a coaching session by developing a list of potential questions or evaluating their word choices afterward. Automating coach-client interaction between sessions may build accountability, and a results focus. Welcome to the Managing CRE Risk podcast with Jeremy Goodrich. Today, we have a veteran CRE investor with us who has more than 25 years of experience, Ken Gee. In our conversation, Ken breaks down risk in different parts of the lifecycle of a commercial real estate deal. He lays out how to succeed in the CRE world and mitigate the risks through due diligence, raising capital, and asset management. You don't want to miss out on this episode! Learn more about Ken and his story at shineinsurance.com/managing-commercial-real-estate-risk! “I've always told our investors, it's my job to try to protect the downside and make sure we have a good upside plan in place.”   04:52 Ken has around 2000 doors in his portfolio and he's been investing in commercial real estate for more than 25 years. He describes himself as a risk-averse person. According to him, one of the hardest aspects of real estate investing is bringing yourself to the awareness of the risks that you want to mitigate.    Ken's advice on how to successfully identify and mitigate risk: Educate yourself on the industry, market, and property. Focus on your operation and constantly evaluate your business plan. Have a solid insurance policy. Identifying risk comes easier with experience, so don't give up. “There's going to be things wrong everywhere. It's just a fact of life. What our job is, is to identify risks that matter.”   12:40 Ken talks about how to manage the risks surrounding the lifecycle of the property. Due diligenceLook at the physical property and see if there are hidden things there that are difficult to correct or significantly impact your business plan. Ken's advice is to find a mentor at the beginning of your investing journey to help you build out your due diligence process. Document the entire procedure. Raising capitalIt's important for passive investors to understand what it means to be invested in a multifamily real estate deal. Ask all the uncomfortable questions from the sponsor to evaluate if they're professional and knowledgeable enough. Figure out if they're transparent and have a good track record. Asset managementGive yourself 30-60 days to learn everything about the property before you start the renovation. Based on this information, modify your business plan.   Ken shares his insight on CRE risks in the near future. Interest rates have doubled in the last year and we might go into a recession. In the real estate industry, the most important thing is occupancy, so make sure you're buying in a growth market and keep your occupancy high. No matter what your job is, sales expert, business owner or manager working your way up the corporate ladder, you're going to have to sell your ideas.  The prospect can be a little scary but it doesn't have to be according to our guest Patrick Donadio. He shares some simple tips like opening with a hook instead of an introduction.  You can open with a question or a compelling statistic that catches their attention. Then you have earned the right to tell them who you are.   Engage the audience on an physical, mental and emotional level.  Then close with a specific call to action.    About Patrick  For the past three decades, Patrick Donadio has spoken nationally and internationally and trained thousands of leaders and their teams, in a variety of industries, from Fortune 100 companies to associations. In his desire to help C-Suite executives and all leaders “grow their people”, Patrick has taken his decades of experience and crafted a results-based process detailed in his book, “Communicating with IMPACT”. His process focuses on improving communication, increasing profits, and boosting performance in less time. Patrick has served on the board of the National Speakers Association (NSA). He is also one of a few people in the world to have earned both the Certified Speaking Professional (CSPTM) designation from the NSA, and the Master Certified Coach (MCC) designation from the International Coach Federation (ICF), the highest distinction from both associations. As a business communication coach, Donadio works with C-suite executives, leaders and Professional Services Providers to grow their business, improve communication/presentation skills, increase sales, and enhance their community image. As an educator, he has taught communications at The University of Notre Dame, The Weatherhead School of Management, The Ohio State University, and The John Glenn College of Public Affairs.
