In an unusual turn of events here, this week I have doubleVee on the podcast…the entire band! Welcome both Allan and Barb Vest to the podcast. They are a duo with a very interesting past and a wonderful new EP.  Allan was a musical late bloomer while his wife Barb has it in her blood, literally. Her grandmother was a composer. That led to a really beautiful project, later on, for Barb and Allan. And Barb's career started in radio, not on the radio. In a bizarre set of coincidences, the two of them met prior to being formally introduced, in a few unconventional ways while Allan was in his previous band, Starlight Mints.  But once they got together, the musical magic started. They have such a unique sound. That's part of what has helped them master the art of sync. Their music has been in movies including Barnyard, Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj, Smiley Face, and The Art of Getting By. They have also made the cut for shows like Malcolm In The Middle, One Tree Hill, Californication, Gossip Girl, and Tim Burton's Wednesday. They have recently released their latest (and possibly last) EP, Periscope At Midnight and it is possibly their best set of songs to date. The six song release is pure doubleVee. Abby Lloyd is an artist and curator based in New York, working in sculpture, performance, video, and installation. Her work utilizes humor and common materials to explore themes of loss, memory, and the emotional charge of objects. Lloyd's recent solo exhibitions include Goodbye Dolly at Alyssa Davis Gallery, New York, NY, and Abby's Room at Freddy, Harris, NY. In 2024, she organized a series of events and exhibitions, including Artists & Recipes at Marvin Gardens in Ridgewood, Queens, based on her 2020 cookbook of the same title featuring over 40 artists. In 2025, she was an artist-in-residence at The Church in Sag Harbor, NY. She will be performing in The Pigeon Impersonation Pageant on the High Line, New York, NY, on June 14 and participating in the exhibition School's Out at Ten Barn Farm, opening July 5, organized by The Macedonia Institute in Ghent, NY. This past Tuesday, December 17th, celebrated the birthday of filmmaker and UCSB alum Gregg Araki. Back in March of this year, we were joined with Araki at the Pollock Theatre for a screening of his newly restored 90s classic, Nowhere, in addition to a Q&A. This event was co-sponsored by UCSB's film and media studies program, and our very own KCSB-FM. Araki is known for directing films such as Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation, Smiley Face, his work on the show 13 Reasons Why, amongst other films. His film ‘Nowhere', along with the other films within his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy have recently been remastered and restored from the 35mm negative to 4k. It's complete with scenes that were deleted for the original release due to rating restrictions, and the original score. KCSB's Kelly Darroch spoke with Araki for a few minutes after the screening and Q&A!

From 1997-2010, a rash of drownings in the Mississippi River in La Crosse were mostly blamed by police on the culture of alcohol in Wisconsin. The deaths being attributed to people becoming inebriated, wondering down by the river, and ultimately falling in, unable to find their way out of the rushing or icy waters before succumbing.  However, a pattern soon began to appear, as all of the victims were college-aged young men, athletic, popular, good-looking, good students, were drinking, and ended up in the river. All of these deaths were the result of a culture of marriage between alcohol and college, according to law enforcement. A group of independent investigators, some retired NYPD detectives, believed otherwise. They believe the deaths to be homicides, committed by a network of serial killers, deemed "The Smiley Face Killers," as smiley face grafitti was repeatedly found in the vicinity of these deaths, according to the detectives.  Scott and Mickey discuss the "Smiley Face Killers" theory, the rationale behind it, the drownings in La Crosse and how they correlate with others throughout the country.  In the opening Banter, we discuss the case of murder victim Mary Schlais, finally solved by DNA after 50 years, and the continued rise of familial DNA in solving cold cases.
