Dr. David Fitch on Acts 4:1-7, 29-34
Living Stones Christian Church East Bay (formerly Great Exchange)
Christians sadly, embody the same partisan and political divisions of the world. But we have something the world doesn't: God. What if God is in our political disagreements? What if there is something he is trying to teach us, form us, sanctify us in our conflicts? What if he is can make something new if we discern his presence in our radically opposing passions and beliefs? This draws heavily on Tim Otto's “Oriented to Faith” and David Fitch's “Church of Us v Them”

Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with David Fitch about what it means to follow Jesus in the culture of our day. Fitch sees power as the primary force shaping our culture, one that, as God's people, we have to confront. Dave draws attention to the ways power has infiltrated the church, issuing a call for church leaders everywhere to confront their own use of worldly power, and to turn instead to godly power. He argues that this power is of a God who is not coercive, but whose power is one of presence for which we have to make space.David Fitch, “Fitch” to his friends, is the founding pastor of Life on the Vine Christian Community, a missional church in Chicago. He describes himself as “a neo-Anabaptist holiness Pentecostal” and is on the pastoral staff of Renew Church in Westmount, Illinois. Fitch is Professor of Evangelical Theology at Northern Seminary, a member of the Jesus Collective and writes and speaks on cultural engagement, leadership and theology. In this episode, David Fitch and I reckon with power in this conversation. We talk about worldly power versus Godly power. What's the difference? Why do we need a new relationship with power? We talk about mutual submission, engaging the table for reconciliation and justice, non-coercive evangelism. We even engage in a conversation around power dynamics and the Middle East. It's a fantastic conversation that is much needed as we continue to encounter abuse of power in the church. So join us as we reckon with power and hand over the reigns to God. "How does God change the world?" That's the questions at the heart of this study. Our answers tend to be political, social, moral, cultural, etc. But David Fitch wants to suggest an answer that is at once much more straightforward, and yet much more deeply challenging - "By knowing God's presence in Christ [in our midst], we are then able to recognize his presence in the world. We participate in his work in the world, and his presence becomes visible. The world sees God's presence among us and through us and joins in with God. And the world is changed." This, Fitch contends, is "faithful presence". But how do we see, seek, and join this presence? In Trinitytide & Advent of 2022, St. Aidan's gathered for a weekly discussion on this precise topic. God is present everywhere. And we are called to embody and become the presence of God by joining in God's redemptive mission everywhere. But we do that differently in different contexts. How we experience and embody the presence of God is different in the church, our homes and neighborhoods, and in the world. In this sermon we consider David Fitch's description of these contexts as the "close circle," the "dotted circle," and the "half circle."

The Peoples Theology is back after our long summer break. In the first part of season two we looked at the question, why is the world the way that it is? In the second part of our season we want to focus on the question, what do we do about it? How do we engage our world? How do we make it better? To help us answer that question we interviewed author, professor, and pastor David Fitch. Fitch is interested in how the church, which is so often compromised by culture, can become a community that serves and loves the world well. How we can be the people Jesus intended us to be.
