Her story is at the heart of our latest episode, where she recounts her transformative journey and how it's led to her role as president of the Tompkins Foundation for Feline Leukemia Advocacy. Join us for a moving exploration of Margaret's tireless efforts to change perceptions and improve the lives of FeLV cats through adoption and awareness.  Shifting gears, we tackle the nuts and bolts of managing FeLV in the wider feline population. I explore the lifesaving impact of spaying and neutering, not only for controlling cat populations but as a key strategy in preventing the spread of FeLV from mother to kitten. We also talk about the importance and effectiveness of vaccination programs, like those offered by Merck, and how they play a crucial role even in multi-cat households. When Pets Attack Many of us have stories of being bit or attacked by companion animals. Some careers are inherently vulnerable to attacks, like veterinarians and postal carriers. USPS Carrier Ramiro DeMarco talks about dogs, cats and snakes that have 'gone postal.' Listen Now The Sounds You Can't Hear Dr. Jeremy Turner, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Illinois College, studies the sounds that humans can't hear, but that may be loud and clear, and maybe even annoying to your pets. Dr. Turner says the proliferation of electronic devices introduces un-heard noise that can actually stress our furry companions. Listen Now Dog Shoots Man An Iowa man's dog shot him while the two were playing together. They were roughhousing on the couch when the large mixed breed dog bounded back up on the sofa, somehow disabling the safety on the gun, which the man had in his belly-band. The dog then stepped on the trigger, hitting the man in the leg. After the gun went off, the dog knew it was no longer playtime because he laid down beside his owner and cried because he thought he had done something wrong. Listen Now Woman Discovers Dog Is Actually Fox A woman was stunned to discover her dog was actually a domesticated fox. She paid $190 for what she believed to be a Japanese Spitz puppy from a pet shop. For months she raised the pup, but kept noticing odd behaviors. The dog never barked and at three-months-old it began refusing to eat dog food. She turned to a friend who worked at a nearby zoo who told her that her dog wasn't a Spitz; it was really a white haired domesticated fox! Listen Now Pawfficer Donut Sworn In A suburban Detroit police department is giving a kitten a new home after their newly selected police cat, Pawfficer Badges, was too sick to join the force. Interview! Vickie Fisher - President of The International Cat Association (TICA) “We cherish both pedigree and non-pedigree cats. We just want the world to value cats as companion animals." Vicki Fisher had a successful career in finance & management, but in retirement, she has really been able to devote more time to her passion: CATS! She is the President of the Albuquerque Kennel Compadre, which is an affiliate of the Animal Welfare Department. She recently received the Albuquerque mayor’s Good Samaritan award for all of her great work in this arena, and she has also created two coloring books for children on how to take care of cats. You may also remember that TICA was one of the sponsors of the recent Online Cat Conference that we just held! We’re so thrilled to have her on the podcast! Vicki has always been an animal lover and got into feeding cats outside her door ... which soon became inside the house. She has had cats for decades and has shared her love of cats all over the world. She even showed cats for many years, which helped her get involved in TICA. TICA, which is kind of like the AKC (for dogs), is international. They register cats and sanction shows. Show cats can either be pedigreed or non-pedigreed. TICA is more interested in just getting people involved by making it fun to show your cat, no matter their breed or type. TICA is an overall registry and also does a significant amount of education and outreach, especially with children, regarding how to take care of cats as pets. Vicki has an incredible knowledge of all the different types of cat breeds, along with their history and how many started out as alley cats. She shares some of this history with us, along with how science now gives us a lot of opportunity to make sure cats are bred properly to pass along good genes. Finally, Vicki discusses the Winn Feline Foundation, where she is the Treasurer, which fundraises exclusively for cat research. They work on ways to focus on curing different feline diseases, particularly Feline Leukemia. They are also involved in different ringworm studies in a shelter environment. In this first podcast we’ll be discussing the Feline Leukemia virus with our guest, Alice Wolf. We’re looking to answer the questions, “Which cats are truly at risk for Feline Leukemia virus?” and “Which test is best for diagnosing Feline Leukemia?” In this podcast, Dr. Wolf provides her recommendations and guidance for an effective Feline Leukemia prevention program. We’ll also discuss the pathology, transmission as well as clinical signs of Feline Leukemia. We’ll conclude our talk with a discussion on how to interpret diagnostic tools and what vaccination protocols she recommends.

Cattitude - Cat podcast about cats as pets on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)

If you are looking a that little piece of the wild kingdom to call your own, you might consider our special cats for this episode of Cattitude. The Abyssinian and Somali breeds of cats are very reminiscent of the African Wildcat, Felis lybica and often look as if they should be sunning on the savannah rather than your window sill. The 4th most popular cat in the US, Abyssinians are known to be great problem solvers and adept at getting anywhere in the household. Later, learn about feline diseases that are still affecting our cats. We may have vaccines for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, but concerns, controversy and misunderstandings are keeping many people from fully comprehending the true seriousness of these diseases.
