Génesis 5: 4¿Cuántos primos tienes? ¿Dos? ¿Cuatro?
Episode 45 – Feline House Soiling – What You Need To Know! This is a topic we are SO passionate about. In a study by Salman et. al. (see below), 28% of cats who were relinquished to shelters were relinquished for behavioural reasons, and of those 28%, 43% were relinquished for house soiling. While this is a distressing situation for cats and caregivers alike, we actually have a really good chance of successfully treating these cases, as long as we take the path to getting to the correct diagnosis. In this episode, Dr Katrin gives you her approach to categorizing the different causes of feline house soiling and how we can differentiate between the different presentations to find the correct diagnosis and treatment plan. In this episode you will learn: 1. The normal stages of kitten development and elimination 2. Possible physical health contributions to Feline House Soiling 3. How to differentiate between Urine Marking and Elimination presentations 4. Where FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis) fits into the puzzle 5. Why addressing stress is vital in all cases of Feline House Soiling Here are the resources Dr Katrin mentions in this episode: 1. Salman, M. D., Hutchison, J., Ruch-Gallie, R., Kogan, L., New, J. Apocalipsis 2:17Dios encomendó a Adán una gran tarea.

The African crested rat? It's got that whole cute and cuddly vibe goin' on, but don't be fooled—it's packin' some serious venom. Yup, you read that right! This little dude coats its fur with toxins from poisonous plants, makin' it one of the sneakiest threats in the animal kingdom. And it ain't the only one playin' that game—there's plenty of other critters out there rockin' that adorable exterior but packin' a punch. From spiky hedgehogs to venomous frogs, nature's got a whole bunch of surprises up its sleeve. So, next time you spot somethin' lookin' all sweet and innocent, better think twice before gettin' too close! #brightside Credit: markaharper1, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/..., https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... Michelle Chow introduced me to her friends Lily Lau and Felis Hui, two women who play the shamanic drum. After two recordings with them in their studio in Tsuen Wan, they invited Michelle to play with them. They planned a little bit before the recording and just began playing. As the composition began taking shape, Michelle provided a constant drone and rhythm with her bowls while Lili and Felis began chanting with each breath, sometimes harmonizing and sometimes dissonant. There was a little bit of beautiful overtone singing at one point. More information here: http://www.sbsemergence.com

The domestic cat--your cat--has, from its evolutionary origins in Africa, been transformed in comparatively little time into one of the most successful and diverse species on the planet. Jonathan Losos, writing as both a scientist and a cat lover, explores how researchers today are unraveling the secrets of the cat, past and present, using all the tools of modern technology, from GPS tracking (you'd be amazed where those backyard cats roam) and genomics (what is your so-called Siamese cat . . . really?) to forensic archaeology. In addition to solving the mysteries of your cat's past, it gives us a cat's-eye view of today's habitats, including meeting wild cousins around the world whose habits your sweet house cat sometimes eerily parallels. Do lions and tigers meow? If not, why not? Why does my cat leave a dead mouse at my feet (or on my pillow)? Is a pet ocelot a bad idea? When and why did the cat make its real leap off the African plain? What's with all those cats in Egyptian hieroglyphics? In a genial voice, casually deciphering complex science and history with many examples from his own research and multi-cat household, Losos explores how selection, both natural and artificial, over the last several millennia has shaped the contemporary cat, with new breeds vastly different in anatomy and behavior from their ancestral stock. Yet the cat, ever a predator, still seems only one paw out of the wild, and readily reverts to its feral ways as it occupies new lands around the world. Humans are transforming cats, and they in turn are transforming the world around them. The Cat's Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa (Viking, 2023) suggests what the future may hold for both Felis catus and Homo sapiens. Melek Firat Altay is a neuroscientist, biologist and musician. Her research focuses on deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. Bibliographie : Vitale, Kristyn R. "The social lives of free-ranging cats." Animals 12.1 (2022): 126.
My guest this month is Dr. Jean-Denis Vigne, Emeritus Director of Research from the Natural History Museum in Paris. In this episode, we discuss the oldest farming village in a Mediterranean island (i.e., Klimonas) in addition to the significance of the Chirokitia Culture to the Neolithic Period and, of course, the earliest possible evidence of felid (cat) domestication: his finds in Shillourokambos that transformed our understanding of the period.

House cats are more akin to wild animals than dogs are (something cat owners already know). Jonathan B. Losos, evolutionary biologist at Washington University and the founding director of the Living Earth Collaborative, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the evolution of our feline friends and explore the relationship we humans have with Felis catus. His book is “The Cat's Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa.”
A čo ovládajú z diferenciálnej geometrie? O tom všetkom diskutujú Jozef a Samuel. Podcast vzniká v spolupráci so SME. We've lived side-by-side with domestic cats for thousands of years, yet they maintain an aura of mystery and a reputation for aloofness and even outright disdain for humans. But are cats really so enigmatic – or are we only just beginning to understand them? In this episode, Ella Rhodes, journalist for The Psychologist, speaks to two experts who are working to help us to understand cats. They discuss research on cat cognition and intelligence, chat about what we can do how to make our cats' lives happier, and even share some tips on how to train them. Our guests are Dr Kristyn Vitale, assistant professor of animal health and behaviour at Unity College, and Dr Zazie Todd, author of the Companion Animal Psychology blog and recent book Purr: The Science of Making Your Cat Happy. Episode credits: Presented and produced by Ella Rhodes. Script edits by Matthew Warren. Mixing and editing by Jeff Knowler. PsychCrunch theme music by Catherine Loveday and Jeff Knowler. Many Ukrainian transgender people fleeing the war face discrimination and humiliation at border checkpoints. In this episode we discuss the personal stories of several trans people in Eastern Europe, two who struggled to get out of Ukraine after Putin's invasion due to discrimination by border guards who refuse to let them leave the war zone, and one teen in Moldova who tragically took her own life after years of harassment by kids at school and the parents of those kids, school administrators, and teachers. If you like our content please become a patron to get our premium episodes, and our public episodes ad-free! We discuss the stories of Edward Reese, Zi Faámelu, and trans woman named Judis. Edward was able to flee his home city of Kyiv to Denmark, but Zi, Judis, and Judis' friend Alice were not so lucky. They were all stopped at the Ukrainian border by border guards who attempted to forcibly enlist them into the army after the border guards declared them to be men. Ukraine is currently under martial law, and restricts all men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the country. Zi managed to swim a narrow part of the Danube river... in February, and make it to Romania and then on to Germany. Judis and Alice didn't get out of the country, as far as we know they're still in Ukraine. 1, 2 Rainbow Europe lists Ukraine as the 39th of 49 countries in Europe in terms of the favorability of LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual) rights. Prior to 2017, people were forced to self-commit to a mental institution for a month, sterilize themselves, divorce if they were married, and undergo gender affirmation surgery to appease the state rules in getting their gender changed on official documents. Since then the WHO has removed the "disorder" classification from transgender medical diagnoses and required all member nations to follow suit, the deadline is this year. In fairness, not all western European countries are much better off. The case that got the EU human rights court to outlaw forced sterilization was a ruling on homophobia. It was originally aimed at three gay men in France. 3 We next discuss the tragic story of Felis Joy, a trans teenager from Chișinău, Moldova who took her own life after harassment by teachers, school administrators, classmates, and the parents of those classmates. One of the teachers who failed to protect her from physical abuse even spoke in favor of transphobia and belittled Felis at her own funeral. Most of the primarily Catholic or Orthodox European countries are heavily biased against LGBTQIA people in their laws. Poland has even declared "LGBT free zones" which is funny considering how many priests there are in that country... 5 1. Julia Lee. “When people use negative words, we need to help correct them. People might speak ill of cats because they don't understand them.” This episode is sponsored in part by Humane Network, Buzz to the Rescues, and Maddie's Fund. Stacy talks to Tracie Hotchner, author, podcaster, animal wellness advocate and founder of The Radio Pet Lady Network, a network of informative radio programs, co-hosted by Tracie with top veterinarians and other pet experts. Tracie is also the founder and director of the annual NY Cat Film Festival and NY Dog Film Festival, which feature short cat-centric and dog-centric films. Premiering in New York City every year, the festivals then travel across the country, partnering with local animal welfare groups in every location that receives a portion of every ticket. Tracie lives in Vermont with her two rescue dogs and enjoys playing tennis. The discussion partially focuses on the results of a recent British research study, which surveyed pet owners to rate their cats' level of psychopathy as defined by human psychological standards. Tracie explains how using certain words and labels can contribute to viewing cats in a negative way. Tracie agrees with Stacy that standard field terminology (such as TNR) and messaging in the animal welfare community needs to be consistent and simple to make it accessible and easily understood by a wider audience. She believes in “elevating the status of cats” since society's view of community cats as the cause of problems like the decimation of birds and wildlife and even cartoon depictions of cats as “clever and slightly villainous” has led to negative stereotypes of cats. Tracie ponders whether that is partly based on the ability of community cats to thrive and survive outdoors. Love letter to Jamie I've never had a clue how to express it to you, but I love you beyond what words can say. I just wrote the following on Little Feather's tribute page: Regrets. I knew I would have them. I've known for 23 years, but now that is mostly what I feel. When Little Feather first arrived and was so sick, I had to carry her in a pouch in my shirt because I still had to work. I had to run a real estate business, care for a husband suffering from Alzheimers, and care for more than 60 other exotic cats who had been rescued from fur farms and taxidermists. Jamie was only 13 and was the most help I had. It would be three more years before my family would join us in this endeavor. I adored Little Feather and wanted so much just to enjoy her kittenhood, to spend time with her, and others, like Windsong, Raindance, Hercules and Catera, but was always being pulled in so many directions that I never had that luxury. I always knew I would regret it. I knew I'd wake up one day and that opportunity would be lost forever. I tried to spend time with each of them, and all of the others that I loved in each and individual ways, but it was never enough. The phone would ring, a text would arrive, some other cat would need assistance and the time was always cut short. Today as I saw Jamie struggling to deal with the loss of a sister, a child to her, a constant in her life for all of her teens and adulthood, I took it to heart that I need to make more time for those I love because I don't want to regret a minute of my life that wasn't spent showing that I love them. Today I wrote up my speech for tomorrow's USDA call What animals should APHIS consider including under the definition of dangerous animals? I believe it is easier to exclude animals from the definition of dangerous animals, when it comes to felids. Because there is no known vaccine against rabies in exotic cats, ALL cat species, other than Felis catus or Felis silvestris catus, should be classified as dangerous animals. Failure to classify them as dangerous, implies that they are not dangerous. The very meaning of the word “dangerous” is: Being able or likely to do harm. Virtually every state requires that exotic cats, of all species, other than domestic cats, be kept caged. That is because they are dangerous, both to humans they may bite, scratch or kill and to the environment. Many states require that domestic cats be vaccinated against rabies and even more require that domestic cats coming into their state be vaccinated first, but there is no known, effective vaccine against rabies in non domestic cats. Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain. Symptoms include: violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Once symptoms appear, the result is nearly always death. That's a pretty awful death and is easily preventable by classifying all non domestic cats as dangerous, and thus not suitable as pets or pay to play props. As for environmental issues, there isn't a week that goes by, that we don't get a call from someone reporting a cougar in their yard. Usually it is a bobcat, or a HUGE domestic cat that is likely the cast off from the hybrid cat trade. 1st generation hybrids, between domestic cats and wild cats, are often bigger than either parent and never work out as pets. These cats often escape or are released into the environment and then breed with feral cats, causing danger to the public and to the local eco systems who are not designed for these super predators. Back in the 60s and 70s, when the Animal Welfare Act was passed, no one would have dreamed that people would try to make pets out of wild cats, so the antiquated rules have not kept up with protecting wild animals from the abuses they suffer today. I am glad that you are considering rule changes and hope that you will drastically improve the protections afforded wild cats in captivity. The changes you make now will probably have to survive another half century of human evolution, so they should be far more restrictive than you may think necessary for now. Other News Around the Sanctuary Today Last night I got a call from a woman in OR who's been working for Bonnie Ringo for 4 years off and on, and full time since April 1. She relayed a long tale of law breaking and abuse toward her and her family, but I don't have time to write that up now. Suffice it to say that I'm glad the bad guys use my name all the time because when they alienated their staff, they always know to come to me. I'm thankful that my mother is lucid enough to still handle as much as she does. Today she and I set aside time to call my credit card company to find out why my card is frozen. I'd asked my mother to send a $5000 payment, when I learned a month ago that we had not gotten the April bill in the mail. When my card froze again, I thought maybe she hadn't paid a bill, or had lost a bill, but today the credit card company said that I was over paid, but that they had blocked my card because the post office told them they couldn't forward my mail any longer. I've been at this address for more than 20 years. There is no mail forwarding going on. Our postal service has just become completely unreliable.
