Weekly and monthly reports determine what's profitable, what's not, and where your practice should grow or cut back.Stephanie Peterson and Anna Browning share why every decision, from staffing to services, should be driven by data, not gut instinct. They discuss how tracking true costs can reveal surprising insights, like which procedures are actually making money and which ones just look busy on the schedule. One key takeaway: “garbage in, garbage out.” If your data isn't accurate, your decisions won't be either.Plus, hear why staff engagement isn't one-and-done; it's ongoing and built through consistent training, check-ins, and trust.GUESTSteffanie PetersonPractice Manager, Dr. Matthew White Facial Aesthetic SurgeryFor more than 20 years, Steffanie has worked with physician, office and surgical center staff to improve efficiency, practice profitability, staff retention and patient care. In this episode of The Armor Men's Health Show, Donna Lee is joined once again by Dustin Fontenot, PA-C, for another candid conversation about “medical sexual anomalies.” This week's topic? Sexsomnia—yes, it's real. They break down what happens when people engage in sexual behaviors while asleep, often alongside conditions like sleepwalking or insomnia. Donna shares a wild (and a little scary) personal story, while Dustin explains how rare sexsomnia is—and how it can be treated through therapy, sleep studies, and medical evaluation. The conversation also dives into the effects of medications like Ambien and how they can impact memory and behavior during sleep. And true to the show's style, nothing is off-limits—yes, even some of the more unusual patient stories (no judgment here!).If you or someone you know is experiencing unusual sleep behaviors, this episode is a must-listen—and a reminder to talk to a medical professional.

In this episode, I'm bringing you a replay from our recent SPARK sprint, where we focused on strengthening operational leadership inside growing aesthetic and wellness practices. During this conversation, I sat down with Melanie Crowley, Practice Manager at Renova Aesthetics, to talk through her journey from elementary education into managing a multi-million dollar business, without a traditional background in this industry. What unfolds is an honest and highly relatable look at what it means to step into leadership before you feel fully ready, and build confidence through action. Together, we unpack the evolving relationship between an owner and a practice manager, and what it really takes to create alignment as a business grows. From navigating team dynamics and implementing change, to learning how to hold accountability without losing trust, Melanie shares what it's looked like to develop her leadership in real time. Inside this replay, we also get into some of the realities that many practice managers and owners face but don't often say out loud… What happens when your team doesn't understand your role How to lead people who were there before you How to balance being supportive while still upholding standards And how consistent communication becomes the foundation for trust, performance, and culture If you're a practice manager learning how to lead, or an owner looking to strengthen your operational leadership and partnership, I think you'll find this conversation both validating and clarifying. Because what this conversation reinforces is simple… Leadership isn't something you wait to feel ready for. It's something you build, one conversation, one decision, and one level-up at a time. In this episode, I'm sitting down with Whitney Stanford, Practice Manager of Meg Fox Aesthetics, for a conversation I've been really looking forward to sharing. This episode is a replay from Day 3 of our SPARK event, where we focused on strengthening operational leadership inside growing practices. We talk about what leadership actually looks like when you're in that seat between vision and execution, responsible for taking big ideas and turning them into something your team can consistently carry out across a growing, multi-location practice. Whitney shares her experience navigating that role, from building trust with her team while still holding a high standard for performance, to creating clarity around expectations so accountability feels collaborative rather than confrontational. We also get into how leadership has evolved for her as the business has grown, and what it's taken to develop the confidence and structure needed to support that growth. Throughout the conversation, we unpack the idea that as a business scales, complexity increases, and sustainable growth requires more than effort. It requires systems, alignment, and operational excellence. We also talk about the frameworks and tools Whitney has implemented to bring more consistency to her leadership and create clear, trackable execution across her team. If you're a Practice Manager, or an owner working closely with one, this episode will give you a real look at what it takes to scale without everything falling back on one person. I am joined not by one but by two guests this week - both from Everhart Veterinary Medicine. Kristy Ballwanz, Practice Manager of the Cross Keys location, and Niki Abendschoen, Director of Marketing and I.T., come on to the show to talk about how they have used their website and social media presence to improve their hiring and recruiting efforts, explaining that they wanted to showcase the culture and values of their practice to attract candidates who would be the right fit for them. On their website, Everhart includes detailed job descriptions for each position so that applicants know exactly what is expected of them. Kristy notes that this has been incredibly helpful, as one recent hire mentioned she had reviewed the job description and core values ahead of her interview, showing she was a good match for their practice culture. Listen in as both Kristy and Niki share some of the positive results that they have seen from their digital recruiting efforts, highlighting that the quality of applicants has improved, with candidates demonstrating a deeper understanding and alignment with Everhart's culture and values. This helps tremendously with the onboarding process, as new hires already know what to expect. Niki also describes Everhart's approach to social media, saying they try to keep it fun, engaging, and representative of their team and values. They highlight their team members, events, and the unique features of their different locations, with Kristy adding that they also use social media to build relationships with their community, showcasing things like their annual "Veterinary Olympics" that clients get excited about. Kristy and Nikki are in agreement that this transparent, community-focused approach to recruiting is beneficial not just for Everhart but also for the veterinary industry as a whole. By attracting employees who are passionate about the practice's mission and values, Everhart is building a truly engaged team that provides excellent patient care and client service! Show Notes: [2:48] - Kristy explains how Everhart has added job descriptions, core values, and culture details online to attract the right hires. In this episode of the Scalable Law Podcast, I dive into a game-changing topic that comes up time and time again with the firm owners I coach: When is the right time to hire a practice manager in a law firm, and what kind of impact can they have on your growth and operations? If you're constantly fielding team questions, managing leave requests, approving every invoice, or buried in admin instead of focusing on strategy, it may be time to level up your law firm management. Hiring a skilled practice or operations manager could be one of the most pivotal decisions you make to scale effectively and reclaim your time as the business owner. Episode Summary In this episode, I share exactly when I believe it's the right time to hire a practice manager in a law firm—typically when your revenue is in the $500K to $1M range. I break down the key responsibilities they can take off your plate, how this hire supports stronger law firm management, and how bringing in the right person allowed me to step back from the day-to-day of running my own firm. You'll learn how to spot the signs that you're overdue for this game-changing hire—and what to look for in a practice manager who can help your firm grow without you becoming the bottleneck. Key Segments When to Hire a Practice Manager in Your Law Firm Thinking about hiring a practice manager? If you're hitting growth ceilings or drowning in daily operations, it might be time. Signs It's Time to Hire: You're no longer the best person to handle day-to-day law firm management. You're overwhelmed, juggling people, clients, admin, and operations. You're ready to scale, but need leadership support to do it sustainably. What a Practice Manager Actually Does A great practice manager in a law firm isn't just admin support—they're your operational engine: Team Management: Handles HR, recruitment, performance reviews, and team check-ins. Client Experience: Improves intake processes, addresses complaints, and maintains service standards. Systems Oversight: Manages software, streamlines workflows, and ensures compliance. Operations & Admin: Takes care of invoicing, reporting, supplier management, and more. Leadership Support: Acts as your second-in-command, solving issues before they hit your desk. The Real Impact for Law Firm Owners Bringing in a practice manager creates space for growth and clarity: More time for strategy, vision, and high-value work Freedom from operational distractions and stress A scalable team structure with stronger accountability Better culture, performance, and profit Who to Hire When hiring for this critical law firm management role, look for: Strong leadership and operations experience A proactive, solutions-first mindset Confidence to manage up—not just follow instructions Law firm experience is a bonus, but not mandatory Hiring a practice manager could be the most important step you take to scale your firm without burning out. Think of them as the engine that powers your growth while you lead from the front. Takeaway Hiring a practice manager in my law firm was one of the most pivotal decisions I've made. It completely transformed how I operated, freeing up my time, clearing mental clutter, and allowing me to shift from being stuck in the day-to-day to focusing on real law firm management and growth. If you're buried in admin, constantly putting out fires, and craving more freedom and sustainable progress, this is the strategic hire that can move you from overwhelmed to in control. Joining us this week is Amy Brauns, Practice Manager, RVT at Everhart Veterinary Medicine located in Baltimore, Maryland. People management can truly be the hardest part of veterinary leadership, and in this episode, Amy, who brings nearly two decades of experience and a deeply thoughtful approach, gets real about what it means to “coach up or coach out.” She shares how she and her leadership team leaned into the EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) model to face the messy, uncomfortable truth - most problems come down to people. From there, they started using The People Analyzer™ tool to assess who really gets the job, who wants the job, and who has the capacity to do the job. This approach is not about forcing people out but is rather about clarity, self-reflection, and giving people the tools (and space) to figure whether or not they are in the right place. Not every place is the right fit for everyone, and that's totally okay. We talk through the tough stuff such as confronting long-standing team members who are great at the job but toxic to the culture as well as taking on those dreaded “this isn't a fit” conversations. Amy explains how their structured coaching process has turned struggling employees into top performers and helped others leave on their own terms, with dignity. If you have ever found yourself avoiding hard conversations or keeping someone around just because they have been there forever even though they might not be the right fit for your workplace culture, then this episode is definitely for you. Amy doesn't sugarcoat the process, but we agree that the transformation on the other side is worth it! Show Notes: [1:37] - Amy Brauns reveals how using EOS clarified that most problems are people-related. [4:09] - Hear how soft skills proved difficult to teach, leading to better team alignment over time. [6:41] - Hear how, despite team longevity, change ultimately happened via clear communication and tools like The People Analyzer™. [8:25] - Amy's team focused mainly on role clarity and transparency, helping staff self-correct before goals were even set. [10:46] - Jill opens up about how removing a toxic veteran employee revived morale and reaffirmed her team's culture. [12:28] - Amy affirms that even just a couple of people who are rowing in the wrong direction can completely disrupt morale. [14:26] - Amy asserts that coaching begins with transparency and standards, helping staff improve or realize that the role isn't right for them. Global Food Policy Report IFPRI Policy Seminar 2025 Global Food Policy Report | Food Policy: Lessons and Priorities for a Changing World May 28, 2025 Over the last 50 years, the world's food systems have evolved tremendously amid major economic, environmental, and social changes. Throughout this period, policy research has played a critical role in providing evidence and analysis to inform decision-making that supports agricultural growth, better livelihoods, and improved food security, nutrition, and well-being for all. IFPRI's 2025 Global Food Policy Report—a special edition marking the Institute's 50th anniversary. This year's flagship report examines the evolution and impact of food policy research and assesses how it can better equip policymakers to meet future challenges and opportunities. As we approach 2050, policy research and analysis will be essential to help build sustainable healthy food systems in this changing world. Thematic presentations from IFPRI's leading researchers will explore the role of evidence in shaping policies over the past 50 years, as well as the potential for research to address emerging challenges and opportunities. A keynote lecture by Michael Kremer, Chair of the Innovation Commission and joint winner of the 2019 Economics Nobel Prize, will address innovations for the future. With over 12 years of experience in veterinary medicine, Lopes brings a deep understanding of patient care, team leadership, and client relations to his role as Practice Manager at Doral Veterinary Care (DVC). His career began in a 24-hour emergency and critical care hospital, where he spent six years as a veterinary technician before expanding into oncology, ophthalmology, and orthopedic surgery. Before joining DVC, he successfully managed multiple general practice veterinary teams across several cities, ensuring excellence in both medical care and client service. Lopes's expertise extends beyond veterinary medicine. His first decade of professional experience was in hospitality, where he developed a keen ability to enhance client experiences and foster strong team dynamics—skills he seamlessly integrates into his work in veterinary care. His lifelong passion for animals began in childhood, growing up alongside a wide array of pets, from dogs and rabbits to a pig and a goat. This love for animals led him into zoological care, where he worked with an impressive range of species, including canids, raptors, primates, and large fauna such as rhinoceroses and giraffes. Notably, he has worked with all seven species of big cats and even the Southern Cassowary, known as the world's most dangerous bird. Outside of work, Lopes is an avid aquarist who enjoys outdoor adventures, fitness, and—above all—spending time exploring the world with his wife and daughter.

Joining us this week is Joshua Blakemore, CVPM, RVT, FFCP of Onion River Animal Hospital in Burlington, Vermont to talk about what it really takes to prepare the next generation of veterinary technicians not just for graduation but for the day-to-day demands of clinical practice. Josh is a standout practice manager and longtime technician advocate who was recently named VHMA's Practice Manager of the Year, but Josh is a humble person who has never lost touch with where he started: in the kennel, working his way up with persistence and purpose. Listen as we unpack the often overlooked disconnect between academic training and real-world application, getting candid about the gaps that we have witnessed in new technician graduates - from handling basics like restraint and jugular draws to dealing with complex procedures with confidence. Josh shares what he's doing at his hospital (and beyond) to help ensure that today's students become tomorrow's professionals, including his involvement in college advisory boards and his commitment to skill-driven externships. We also explore some broader challenges in technician education from the uneven quality of online programs to the really surprising ways that some hospitals may unintentionally stifle growth. With firsthand experiences, practical insights, and a clear call for mentorship, Josh sheds some light on the kind of support that vet techs really need not just to survive but also to thrive in the profession. It's all about making sure that they stay, grow, and succeed once they arrive. Show Notes: [3:01] - Josh made note of Vermont's lack of licensure requirements and worked to improve tech training in hospitals. [6:40] - Josh highlights the importance of hands-on skills in externship programs, especially phlebotomy. [9:13] - Students should work in hospitals during education to apply bookwork to hands-on experience. [13:22] - Hands-on skills help students stay in the field, offering them more confidence. [16:04] - Josh loves training and creating roles to help employees professionally grow. [19:12] - A technician can really help organize surgeries, optimizing time and space. [20:31] - Hear how Josh supports employee growth by trusting them with making decisions.
