When facing separation, the fear and overwhelm of finances can feel like the last insurmountable obstacle to freedom. Many people, paralyzed by the unknown, stay in unhappy marriages for the money. This week on A Year and a Day, Jaime Davis sits down with Lori Atwood, CFP®, founder of Fearless Finance, to demystify money management during and after divorce. Lori's firm provides objective, hourly, and affordable financial planning, driven by the mission that finances should never dictate a life-altering decision. They discuss the emotional roots of financial fear, the practical steps to gain control, and the critical elements of building a secure, sustainable life post-divorce.Tune in for:Why the question "Can I survive?" is often the last piece of the puzzle people need answered before deciding to leave a marriage.Lori's top two immediate steps for the "non-moneyed spouse" upon separation: establishing individual credit and gathering data on all accounts. Why the marital house is often "the elephant in the room" and why, from a financial standpoint, selling it is typically the cleaner and less stressful option. The financial pitfalls of nesting and why this arrangement is generally detrimental to long-term financial stability.Lori's simple spending tracker model that focuses only on two main areas—groceries and discretionary spending—to help people consistently spend less than they earn. The advantage of the hourly, no-commission financial planning model for divorcing individuals who need objective advice without the pressure of being sold products. The building blocks of a post-divorce financial roadmap, including cash reserves, emergency funds, and retirement savings.Lori's single most important piece of advice: The most critical thing to your finances is your happiness.About Lori Atwood:Lori Atwood is the founder of Fearless Finance, a firm dedicated to providing objective, hourly, and affordable financial planning. Slam The Gavel podcast welcomes back Julie M. Anderson Holburn. Julie was last on Season 6, Episode 319 and February 6th, 2023. Today we discussed how family court is treated like a "Kangaroo Court," and makes it appear to be "an excuse," for its BAD BEHAVIOR. We talked about several cases, one of them being the Taran Nolan case in Orange County, CA and how that was mishandled. The judiciary has gone rogue long enough, and this has been an ongoing problem nationwide, destroying parental bonds with their children by judges with little to no education in psychology or child psychological abuze. Up for discussion was the changes happening in Idaho and Arizona. We also discussed the article written by Greg Larose on 12-10-2025, "Lawmakers Fear DCFS Reorganization Could Cost Louisiana Experienced Child Welfare Workers," and how this could be a good thing. To Reach Julie M. In this episode, I unpack what it is like to be labelled a dad who “lost custody” after years of giving everything to my son. I walk through my work story, how my flexible career and time with him were framed as a weakness in court, and why that judgement left such a deep feeling of shame. From there, I talk about the choice to stop feeding resentment, to step away from online drama, and to focus instead on love, presence and long term connection.I also share one of the biggest turning points in my journey, taking my son and my partner off grid while we waited for an appeal decision, and how those days by the lake became a template for how I cope with stress as a long distance dad. I close with some simple ideas for staying connected across distance, from consistent FaceTime rituals to making small, memorable adventures when you are finally together. What you'll hear in this episode:What it actually feels like to “lose custody” and carry that labelHow my work history and time with my son were used against me in courtWhy holding on to bitterness gives your power away to the systemThe story of going off grid with my son while we waited for an appeal decisionHow nature, adventure and simple rituals help me stay grounded as a long distance dadPractical ideas for staying close through FaceTime, shared interests and small adventuresA reminder to get support, keep showing up and let your love for your child lead the way
Welcome to A Year and a Day. In this episode, board-certified family law attorney Jaime Davis talks with Thad Hollis, an expert in conflict resolution, divorce coaching, and mediation, and the founder of Better Outcomes.Thad introduces his powerful philosophy: "Conflict is inevitable. Combat is optional." He explains how someone in the middle of a painful divorce can begin to view conflict as a "gift"—an opportunity for positive change rather than a source of destruction. Thad shares his mediation and coaching techniques, emphasizing the need for clients to "find their voice" and shift their mindset from a win-lose battleground to constructive negotiation.Jaime and Thad discuss common emotional roadblocks in divorce, such as the need "to be heard," feelings of unfairness, and the prevalence of power imbalances in relationships. They conclude by focusing on the ultimate goal: being kind and future-focused to ensure the best possible outcome for the children and the co-parenting relationship.Need help from Thad? Welcome to A Year and a Day. In this episode, Jaime Davis, a board-certified family law attorney at Gailor Hunt, focuses on helping children during family transitions by talking with Todd Sarner, founder of Transformative Parenting and a licensed psychotherapist.Todd's work is built on Attachment First Science, which centers on the child's need for security in their primary relationships. He explains how his personal experience as a child of divorce inspired his mission to help parents move from daily chaos to lasting calm.Jaime and Todd discuss why a child's behavior—such as resistance and defiance—should always be viewed as symptoms of underlying anxiety or insecurity, especially when navigating a breakup or divorce. Todd reveals why children of divorce often struggle with separation anxiety and feel unable to connect to both parents simultaneously. They explore practical strategies for parents to unite, including the concept of "bridging" to help children feel connected to the absent parent. Todd also shares why he recommends a "parent timeout" over a child timeout when emotions run high, and emphasizes that parental self-care is the most critical factor in promoting a child's well-being.Need help from Todd? Slam The Gavel welcomes Wes Acton to the podcast. He is a 42 year old father of four amazing children. However, on December 19th, 2016, he had to turn his then wife in for physical child abuse, but he thought he was seeking help. What came next was the police arriving and CPS. Wes has no criminal record, not even a parking ticket. CPS removed the children from their home and placed them with the paternal grandparents. His wife served one year in prison. After 10 months, Wes FINALLY got the children back. With false accusations, his church turned on him without any evidence and even took time out to drive 40 minutes to go to court to lie about Wes. Nine members of his church and half of his family turned on him, disowned him because he SUDDENLY became an inconvenience and an embarrassment. To reach Wes Acton: Wes Acton on TikTok and on FB: Randolph ActonSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetrihttps://www.zazzle.com/store/slam_the_gavel/about*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. After marrying in 2014 and welcoming his son later that year, he faced the devastating reality of abuse and a court system that repeatedly failed to protect his child. Despite presenting evidence, expert testimony, and even sworn admissions that state investigators filed false allegations against him, the courts relied on perjury and denied his custody rights. He successfully fought off one petition by Child Protective Services, but subsequent rulings ignored due process and forced him into supervised visitation, framing his refusal to deny abuse as “endangerment.” His case now sits before the Supreme Court of the United States, raising critical questions about constitutional protections, government misconduct, and whether citizens can truly enforce their rights when the system itself violates the law.Joe Rued grew up in Minnesota, earned a degree in philosophy, and built a career in business development before his life was redirected by a custody case involving his son. When co-parenting feels impossible because of constant conflict, there is another way. It's called parallel parenting—a structure designed for high-conflict divorce that reduces interaction, sets clear boundaries, and allows both parents to focus on their children's wellbeing. In this episode of the Journey Beyond Divorce Podcast, I'm joined by Randi Karmel, PLLC, a family law attorney, mediator, and parent coordinator with decades of experience helping families navigate custody disputes, substance abuse cases, and complex parenting dynamics. Randi and I explore how to create a parallel parenting plan that actually works. We talk about what must be included in your legal agreement, the pitfalls to avoid, and how to handle the inevitable gray areas that come with real life. You'll also hear why having a parent coordinator can be a game-changer in easing ongoing conflict. If you're facing high-conflict divorce or struggling with parenting arrangements, this episode will give you practical tools to reduce stress, minimize court battles, and prioritize your child's emotional safety.
