As of recording this episode, the filing of candidacies for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections has concluded, which means it is election season all over again in the Philippines. With that being said, throughout the course of our country's history various political events that have led to violence and killings have occurred. One of the most infamous incidents that changed the course of our country's political landscape is The Plaza Miranda Bombing in 1971.The Plaza Miranda Bombing, at the time, was viewed as one of the most infamous tragedies that happened during a political event. On the evening of August 21, 1971, the Liberal Party, which was the opposition party against former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s Nacionalista Party, was holding a political rally at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila. As the rally was in full swing, two grenades were thrown onto the stage where the Liberal Party leaders were gathered. The explosions caused chaos and devastation, resulting in nine deaths and injuring 95 others. Among the casualties were a five-year-old child and Ben Roxas, a photographer for the Manila Times.CONNECT WITH US▸ https://linktr.ee/phmurderstoriesHere are links to our social media accounts, case photos, episode notes, and sources!YOUTUBE▸ www.youtube.com/phmurderstories DISCORD SERVER▸ https://bit.ly/3n38Tuh IG CHANNEL▸ https://ig.me/j/AbaOmN2HytgKay0F/ SUPPORT OUR SHOW ON PATREON▸ www.patreon.com/phmurderstories Hosted on Acast. June 30th marks the full circle of the first year under Philippine president Ferdinand ‘Bongbong' Marcos Jr., son of previously deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The Philippines is both a globally critical hotspot of biodiversity and natural resources, and a historic beacon of democracy and people power in Asia. But the environmental and human rights situation has deteriorated over the past decades, especially under the prior regime of the fascist Rodrigo Duterte, president from 2016 to 2022.

The unimaginable happened in the Philippines' 2022 presidential election, which had been anticipated for a long time. In June, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., succeeded the controversial Rodrigo Duterte as president. The recent electoral victory of Bongbong in the Philippines is significant. Since his father, Marcos Sr., was in power for 21 years, including 14 years of martial law, this is effectively the first time a genuine democracy has existed in the Philippines. But those who were there at the moment of martial law were going crazy over it. His father was a horrible dictator. His mother's extensive shoe collection was legendary. So how did Bongbong, or 64-year-old Ferdinand Marcos Jr., become the frontrunner in the Philippines' presidential election on May 9? Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*FULL SPEECH: President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. inaugural address (Manila Bulletin Online YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! After fleecing billions of dollars from the Philippines, torturing and murdering thousands during the period of martial law, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was removed from power through a popular uprising in 1986.  How was it possible that his son, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., was elected as president in 2022?  Dr. John Lee Candelaria, from Hiroshima University, argues that a long history of memorializing heros and forgetting the victims of the nation's past, has much to do with the reality of the Philippines present.  From the influence exerted by American authorities during their half century of rule in the Philippines to the dependence on Japanese aid in the present, larger political forces have played a major role in shaping the parameters of official memory in the Philippines.

Filipinos voted for Ferdinand Marcos in 1965, and he became president. The Philippines during that time was admired as a model of Third World governance and economic success. His presidency coincided with a period of unprecedented economic growth in the Asia-Pacific. It was the biggest and fastest economic growth the world has ever seen. The majority of people of his time believed Marcos to be one of the most intelligent and thoughtful lawyers and political leaders in all of Asia. When martial law was declared in 1972, it was with the promise that the country would follow the economic development models of its neighbors. These positive developments occurred simultaneously, but then a national tragedy struck.Music:*24hr News by O2 StudioSupport the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! In Commemoration of the 37th EDSA People Power Anniversary: To Forgive and to Forget or To Forgive and Remember | Word and Songs Podcast with Sr. Lines Salazar, fsp Today, February 25, 2023, we commemorate the 37th anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution 1. It was an iconic event in our Philippine History which was recognized and admired by people worldwide because it unites the Filipino people to carry out a bloodless revolution to end the 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the restoration of democracy in the Philippines. Do you still remember those days? Or for our young generation… Are you aware of it? Do you have painful or encouraging memories of it? Or we just say these phrases; “forgive and forget” or “forget and remember” what happened there? From February 22 to 25, 1986, Filipinos are united to regain our freedom, in restoring our dignity, and bring back life. And for us, new generation, we benefitted from the courage of our people at that time; and it leads us to see that weapons are not a solution to resolve conflict instead humility and openness of heart. Through the prayers of nuns, priests, and those who believe that God will intervene there is a twist of decision that happened unexpectedly. We FORGIVE and move forward. Sometimes, memories or past events give us a good spirit to move forward but sometimes it adds conflict among us. Conflicts divided us and made us forget the goodness that happened in that event. EDSA 1 is a powerful image of courage but most of all forgiveness. Forgiveness is an action that seems so impossible but leads to healing, let us not FORGET the suffering of our people who were there in EDSA 1. They fought bravely, risked their lives for any eventuality. Do not forget the pain that it caused our people during that time, the lives that suffered abuse. Do not forget that somehow, we defended our country, that somehow God showered us with his graces with bravery to face the tanks and soldiers who were ready to shoot the rallying people. Yes, we forgive! But to forget is not a way to be blinded by the thought that that event is just mere propaganda. It is a heroic event that unites all Filipinos from different walks of life, religion, and beliefs. As it says, “The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naive forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget.” The wise can forgive but cannot forget because the error that happens in his life guides him to be keen in traversing the present. Remembering is our way of reminiscing about an event that somehow helped us not to forget the person we loved or memories we treasured. Like the other thief who begged Jesus not to forget him when he is in his kingdom. “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Lk. 23:42) His words moved the heart of God and he promised that he will be with him. Then, let us remember that event, and forgive those people who abused others and their power but do not forget the good things that happened, and even the pain that our fellow Filipino endures. History cannot be repeated but if we are not careful enough we will repeat history and maybe much worse than the past. Let us remember God's saving hand that guides our people at that time. EDSA 1 is not only about one person or one family, instead it is about the solidarity of one nation that awes the entire world. Friends, let us forgive the people who hurt us and pray for them and remember the pain and cruelty we experienced are points to be strong. Hand in hand let us stand as one to attain our most longed for peace in our country.

He graduated with a degree in AB History at the University of San Carlos, Philippines in 2015, and worked as a Program Officer for Research at the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation where he contributed as a Principal Researcher, Indexer, Editorial Assistant, and Field Researcher for various local and regional events, exhibits, academic publications, and projects. THE VIRGIN MARY SYMBOLISM. In 1986, it was believed that the Lady of Fátima—the Catholic title of Mary that's based on the Marian apparitions of three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal in 1917—"miraculously mediated" a peaceful revolution against former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr, where demonstrators largely consisted of Roman Catholic nuns who offered flowers to soldiers while praying the rosary. Two years later, a "Holy Ground" marker known as the EDSA Shrine was built as an act of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary. In 2019, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines declared the church as an "Important Cultural Property". PHILIPPINES, A MATRIARCHAL NATION. Stemming from pre-colonial social structures, the Philippines already allowed equal importance among kinships, where women inherited property, commanded as religious leaders, composed the military forces, and led villages in the absence of a male heir. Today, Filipino women still contribute to the decision-making process within families, businesses, and the country. The Philippines currently ranks 7th in the Gender-Equality List for Southeast and East Asia in the 2022 SDG Gender Index by Equal Measures 2030, with an overall score of 69.8 just after Malaysia and Thailand. THE MANILA GALLEON. For two and a half centuries, Spanish trading ships sailed between Acapulco and Manila that brought cargoes of luxury items such as tobacco, spices, and porcelain to the Americas. During the Spanish empire, priests and missionaries were mobile. And also aboard the galleons were deportees, prisoners, exiles, and among other undesirables from the colonies; making a diverse variety of crewmen traveling between Spain, Peru, and the Philippines. THE BATTLE OF TRES DE ABRIL. In March 1898, Filipino revolutionary leader Lt.-Gen. Pantaleón "León Kilat" Villegas agreed to revolt against the Spaniards with the Cebuano Katipuneros (KKK); plotted on April 10th, an Easter Sunday. After the Spaniards caught wind of the scheduled rebellion, armed with bolos (machete) and some guns, 6,000 revolutionists fought a week earlier on Palm Sunday, April 3rd, and won; now known as the 'Battle of Tres de Abril'.
