Episode FORTY-FOUR: Redefining Dreams: Rachel Corsini on Life, Love, and "Sushi and Sea Lions

Today's episode vividly explores the poignant journey of self-discovery and love as we discuss Rachel Corsini's debut novel, "Sushi and Sea Lions." Through the lens of Daniela's chaotic yet relatable experiences, we delve into the complexities of adulthood, relationships, and the importance of embracing life's messiness. • Daniela's journey of personal and romantic rediscovery  • New York City as a character in the narrative  • The intertwining themes of heartbreak and healing  • The balance of character development and relatability  • The humorous portrayal of millennial dating dilemmas  • The therapeutic nature of writing personal experiences   Author Bio: After declaring herself a pretty pink princess during her first ballet class, Rachel dreamt of sugarplums and began pirouetting her way through life. While studying to become a ballerina, she compulsively read books under her covers by flashlight and scribbled in spiral-bound notebooks. The urge to tell stories culminated in her graduation from Columbia College Chicago with a B.F.A. in fiction writing.Never one to keep her feet on the ground, she traveled the world from Prague to Cape Town. Once settled back in Queens, she dabbled in journalism before working as an Editorial Assistant for a medical publisher. Seeking a more fulfilling career, she earned her MAT from Queens College and currently works as an English teacher in an alternative program in NYC. Rachel spends her time sipping coffee, trying to cook, and practicing her pirouettes. She currently resides in Freeport, Long Island. Book Blurb: When a career-ending injury and a messy breakup send prima ballerina Daniela Verdi back to Queens, New York, she fills her days with countless distractions: meaningless sex, pinot grigio, and video games. It takes a chance meeting with her brother's best friend, Vincent LaBate, for her to remember who she was before the stage lights and distractions of the Upper West Side. She's convinced that Vincent could never love a girl like her: broken, insecure, and stumbling her way through life. What Daniela didn't count on is that Vincent is as scarred as she is after divorcing his cheating wife and going through an equally messy child custody fight. Soon enough, old vulnerabilities rear their ugly heads, opening a crack in Daniela's perfectly imperfect romance. As Daniela and Vincent's relationship develops, will Daniela learn to accept that a dream life isn't all it's cracked up to be?Socials: @MadameRaeRae on Tiktok/Instagram/X/BlueSky/ThreadsBuy the BOOKAbout Victoria:Hey there, I'm Victoria! The Formula For Successful Books with Editor Ivan Taurisano

Is there a formula for success? What do you do when "A new twist on something familiar" starts to feel overly simplistic? Enter editor Ivan Taurisano, editor at Abrams, who works from the opposite direction of most editors: he can think of a concept that's marketable, then put together the team to make it happen. We discuss: ***Collaborating with Licensing Partners: Ivan works closely with major brands like Disney, Netflix, and others to create books that resonate with current market trends. ***Data-Driven Decision Making: Unlike traditional editors who wait for manuscripts, Ivan actively seeks out market trends and creates content that meets those demands. ***Monitoring Bestseller Lists: Checking Amazon and New York Times bestseller lists to identify common themes and outliers. ***Examining BISAC Codes: Understanding how books are categorized to spot market trends. ***Creating Engaging and Humorous Content: Books should be fun and engaging for children, encouraging a love of reading. ***Finding the Sweet Spot: Balancing humor and content that resonates with children while being appropriate for parents. Ivan Taurisano was born in Rome, Italy, and moved to the United States almost ten years ago to pursue a children's book publishing career. The guiding principle of his work is that a child whose life is changed by a book will always be a step closer to becoming an adult who will change the world. Ivan's all-time favorite book is James and the Giant Peach, and his best friend is a chihuahua named Bilbo. Ivan has a BA in English and Creative Writing, an MA in Children's Literature, and an MFA in Writing for Children. He started his career at Sourcebooks as an Editorial Assistant, then moved on to become an Assistant Editor. His responsibilities included developing children's board books, picture books, and graphic novels, as well as acquiring board books and picture books. Ivan has worked with many successful series and brands, including How to Catch, Little Heroes Big Hearts, Sesame Street, Disney, Tokidoki, and Pokémon. Currently, Ivan lives in New York and works at Abrams as an Associate Editor on the Children's Entertainment Publishing and Content Development team. In this role, he focuses novelty books, board books, graphic novels, and select MG and YA titles. He is especially interested in stories with a strong commercial hook, crave-able content, compelling characters, and series potential. Board books and picture books: Ivan is interested in children's board books and picture books that are kid-centric, interactive, character-driven, and have series potential. He enjoys titles with a strong hook, fun read-alouds, great rhymes, bold and playful imaginative stories, books that break the fourth wall and invite reader participation, as well as seasonal stories such as Christmas and Halloween. MG: Ivan is interested in plot-driven, action-packed adventures with a strong commercial hook, compelling characters, magic, quests/competitions, and high stakes. YA: Ivan prefers strong commercial hooks, well-plotted, character-driven, atmospheric stories, and series potential. He loves fantasy, magic, and quests/competitions. He likes unique, morally grey characters, memorable villains, and propulsive, cinematic writing. Ivan is not the best fit for nonfiction, retellings, historical fiction, biographies, and novels in verse. *** Schedule a meeting with Ivan here: https://manuscriptacademy.com/faculty-members/ivan-taurisano

With Claire Underwood of the University of Cincinnati's Artlitt Center for Education, Research, & Sustainability and Children, Youth, Environments (CYE) Journal What does empathy look like in young children? How can we nurture it? When do we just need to step back and let children sort through the complexities of the natural world? Claire Underwood recently participated in a Community of Practice centred on using a Two-Worlds Approach to develop an empathy model for young children. This work was rooted in Natural Curiosity's four-branch framework of children's environmental inquiry informed by Indigenous perspectives. In this fascinating discussion, Claire shares the findings from the CoP as well as stories from educators who have implemented the empathy model in their teaching. Guest: Claire Underwood is a Doctoral Student at the University of Cincinnati, where she is the Editorial Assistant for the Children, Youth, Environments (CYE) Journal and conducts research with the Artlitt Center for Education, Research, & Sustainability.  After more than a decade working in non-profit leadership and community organizing focusing on environmental and social justice, Claire returned to academia to earn her Master's in Environmental Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. There, her work focused on the impact of nature-based learning on children's empathy development. Claire co-designed and co-facilitated a seven-month professional learning experience that supported 15 early childhood educators in deepening their empathy practices through intentional & respectful engagement with Indigenous peoples and perspectives.  Through her work, Claire seeks to support teachers, children, and their families in creating experiences that affirm children's agency, support their connection to the Earth, and work meaningfully together toward a just and sustainable present and future. If you've been following me for a while, you've probably heard of peptides, but maybe not peptide bioregulators. Peptide bioregulators - which can be taken orally as a supplement - have been a secret of the anti-aging and longevity world for years, but are just now beginning to hit the mainstream. Peptide bioregulators are small protein molecules that can activate genes for cellular regeneration, acting as cellular mediators to regulate gene expression and protein synthesis. These molecules were first discovered decades ago during the Cold War when the Russian military exhibited signs of premature aging. In response, the Russian government embarked on a mission to find a solution to maintain the health of its troops and prevent aging. As a result, they discovered peptide bioregulators, which have been shown to have potential benefits for cellular health and regeneration. My guest on today's podcast, Phil Micans, has extensively studied Khavinson's work and is one of the world's leading experts on anti-aging, peptide bioregulators. Use code BGF15 for 15% off. At the end of the ‘90s, after blowing up in Japan, Pokémon came to America. And it became so ubiquitous so fast that critics saw it as a plot to turn U.S. children into hypnotized consumers— or even devil-worshippers. But the version of Pokemon that conquered America was very much an American creation; in this episode we'll look at how Pokemon became an international brand, and how its success brought out the worst in more than a few American parents. Guest Suzanne Leonard joined the staff of The Dartmouth, but realized the pace of a daily paper didn't give her time to spend with the stories or the words she was writing. A work-study job at the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine gave her a taste of a different pace that suited her better. A double English and psychology major, she found the perfect internship, working as an assistant at Psychology Today and left college convinced she would work in magazine publishing. Landing at Fitness magazine, she didn't end up feeling comfortable with either the content or the paycheck. She took advice from her professor father that she might want to consider graduate school, applied, and found herself—and her people—in a master's program in Wisconsin. Realizing she was better suited to write about magazines than for them, she pursued her PhD in literature and worked across a variety of media, ultimately concentrating in gender, media, and popular culture. When she realized that the winds of popular opinion were blowing in ideas about what constituted “appropriate” curricula for schools across the country and particularly her middle-class town in Massachusetts, she realized that she her knowledge of critical race and gender theory needed to be applied to the debate and she ran for an open seat on the school committee in her town.In this episode, find out from Suzanne how moving from doing what you know to casting a critical eye toward it can sometimes make more impact…on Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestSuzanne Leonard is Professor of English and the Director of the Graduate Program in Gender and Cultural Studies at Simmons University. She is on the board of Console-ing Passions, an organization devoted to the study of Television, Video, Audio, New Media, and Feminism. Her recent books include Wife, Inc.: The Business of Marriage in the Twenty-First Century (2018); and the edited volume Imagining We in the Age of I: Romance and Social Bonding in Contemporary Culture(2021). On the other hand, Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes paralleled the ideology of "The China Man" being well-grounded to their Chinese identity and ancestry, same as Jewish communities, while modern-day Filipinos would easily adapt to different cultures and practices. And also the supposed issue behind Andrés Bonifacio's scheme to use José Rizal's name during KKK meetings that led to the latter's eventual demise. In other words, "Why, Andrés? Why!" Podcast Producer Alphecca Perpetua asked Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes if the 1986 EDSA Revolution and the 2022 Philippine Elections results were both contrasting historical events, and found that the two weren't as different and weren't as ironic from 16th to 19th-century Las Islas Filipinas after all; with cities, municipalities, and towns still ruled and governed by the same Principalía (or ruling Mestizo Class) now simply known as the "Politician-Elect". He added, "I was using these families as examples that not much has changed in the Philippine society since the Spanish period. How our society is run is simply dictated by the choices of a very few wealthy elite families. The Principalía of the 1800s pretty much dictated how their local communities were governed. Fast forward to today, we are still slaves to the choices of a few wealthy families who may or may not come from the Principalía of old. This idea came from Alfred McCoy in his book, 'An Anarchy of Families: State and Family in the Philippines.' A must-read especially in these [trying] times." And while heavily stationed in the Luzon-Manila area, the KKK started recruiting members in the Visayas region; primarily around the Iloilo and Negros area due to the Mestizo's wealthy network and connections brought by large profits of estates and plantations, which eventually led to the recruitment of Hiligaynon revolutionary leader Lt.-Gen Pantaleón "León Kilat" Villegas to spread word of an upcoming rebellion on the highly urbanized Cebuano shores that would soon be known as the bloody battle of Tres de Abril. Aside from bringing fortune and culture, what else did the Galleon Trade bring to the Philippines? For two and a half centuries, Spanish trading ships sailed between Acapulco and Manila that brought cargoes of luxury items such as tobacco, spices, and porcelain to the Americas. With all the 16th-century Spanish ruckus between Cebu and Manila, whatever happened to Mindanao? Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes recounts on the Spanish-Moro conflict originating from medieval 11th-century Europe, where Muslim-Christianity hostility was first recorded. Apart from infighting issues between a few Muslim tribes, the sea border (Bohol Sea) separating Visayas and Mindanao also contributed to the slow progress — with an additional note that the Ifugao tribes within the Cordillera region (Northern Luzon) were also free from Spanish reign; mentioning their threats of Spanish heads displayed on spikes and poles within routes as warnings. THE VIRGIN MARY SYMBOLISM. In 1986, it was believed that the Lady of Fátima—the Catholic title of Mary that's based on the Marian apparitions of three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal in 1917—"miraculously mediated" a peaceful revolution against former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr, where demonstrators largely consisted of Roman Catholic nuns who offered flowers to soldiers while praying the rosary. Two years later, a "Holy Ground" marker known as the EDSA Shrine was built as an act of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary. In 2019, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines declared the church as an "Important Cultural Property". PHILIPPINES, A MATRIARCHAL NATION. Stemming from pre-colonial social structures, the Philippines already allowed equal importance among kinships, where women inherited property, commanded as religious leaders, composed the military forces, and led villages in the absence of a male heir. Today, Filipino women still contribute to the decision-making process within families, businesses, and the country. The Philippines currently ranks 7th in the Gender-Equality List for Southeast and East Asia in the 2022 SDG Gender Index by Equal Measures 2030, with an overall score of 69.8 just after Malaysia and Thailand. THE MANILA GALLEON. For two and a half centuries, Spanish trading ships sailed between Acapulco and Manila that brought cargoes of luxury items such as tobacco, spices, and porcelain to the Americas. During the Spanish empire, priests and missionaries were mobile. And also aboard the galleons were deportees, prisoners, exiles, and among other undesirables from the colonies; making a diverse variety of crewmen traveling between Spain, Peru, and the Philippines. THE BATTLE OF TRES DE ABRIL. In March 1898, Filipino revolutionary leader Lt.-Gen. Pantaleón "León Kilat" Villegas agreed to revolt against the Spaniards with the Cebuano Katipuneros (KKK); plotted on April 10th, an Easter Sunday. After the Spaniards caught wind of the scheduled rebellion, armed with bolos (machete) and some guns, 6,000 revolutionists fought a week earlier on Palm Sunday, April 3rd, and won; now known as the 'Battle of Tres de Abril'. The PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION (also known as the "EDSA Revolution") was a series of nonviolent political demonstrations in February 1986 as a civil resistance campaign against violence and electoral fraud under the 21-year Marcos regime. EDSA is a limited-access, circumferential highway in the Philippines. It is an acronym for "Epifanio de los Santos Avenue," and is considered as the longest and most congested highway in Metro Manila; stretching at about 23.8 km in length. FERDINAND EMMANUEL EDRALIN MARCOS SR was the 10th and 11th president of the Philippines, as well as the 3rd Prime Minister, from 1965 to 1986. He ruled under Martial Law from 1972 until 1981, but retained powers as the country's dictator until the People Power/EDSA Revolution in 1986. The TASADAY TRIBE is a controversial indigenous group living in the Lake Sebu area in Mindanao, Philippines, and are considered to belong to the Lumad group, the Austronesian indigenous peoples in the southern part of the country. The controversy started in 1971 when Manuel Elizalde Jr of the Presidential Assistant on National Minorities (PANAMIN)—a former Philippine government agency created to protect the interests of indigenous peoples—initially reported to the Smithsonian Institution to inform the world of an isolated group of primitive hunter-gatherers living in caves. The report garnered so much global attention that it attracted various specialists, professionals, and scientists to conduct preliminary investigative and academic work. In 1972, the Marcos administration then established a 19,000-hectare rainforest reservation that surrounded the caves of the Tasaday tribe. Two years later, visitors were then required to obtain special permits; therefore, prohibiting further interaction. In the aftermath of the EDSA Revolution in 1986, Swiss anthropologist and journalist Oswald Iten, among others, debunked the existence of the "Stone Age" cave dwellers when Tasaday tribesmen confessed that they were, in fact, a mixed group of Manobos and Tbolis lumads who acted as cave-dwelling, stone-tool using primitives in exchange for land and money as promised by PANAMIN. Alex studied at the Middlebury College, and had a stint as an Editorial Assistant at the Yale University Press, and has now spent 23 years working at Microsoft. In this episode, we discuss what drew Adam to journalism and then the world of community, the different types of communities Alex has been building at Microsoft, and the business impact of his work. We wrap up by talking about the metrics that can be used to track effective community-building activities, the mistakes Alex has made that he would like you to know about and the tactics he uses to drive engagement. Listen to the full episode to level up your community-building game... Who is this episode for?: Community Managers 3 key takeaways: When connecting community members: think win: win not zero-sum Simple things to make virtual events more effective: get your speakers online 30 minutes early, be a present host and be clear about how to attend the event When tracking community metrics, don't be to concerned with the raw number, be more concerned with its trajectory Notable Quotes: “And then I read this report that was titled something like “the emerging role of the community manager”. That was about 2010 or 2011. And it was like a light bulb went off in my mind. Cause I thought, this is what I'm doing. Someone has defined what this job is, you know, and that was, I think, where I really started to feel like community management is my calling.” “You are going to need to have someone who's driving that community. Personally in my context, I think like there's very few organic, completely organic communities where Hey, someone just has a great idea and there's a bunch of people in the organically get together and somehow things happen and it keeps happening and just goes on. It's not that those don't ever happen. It's just, they're quite rare. They're the exception. They Def I think they definitely are. You need someone who's the community lead or the community manager. They could be part-time or full-time, it could be official part of their job or an unofficial. Part of their job, but they've taken ownership of it, but you just need someone to kind of turn the crank.” Rapid fire question answers: 1. What's your go-to pump up song? We Will Rock You by Queen 2. What's your proudest ultimate frisbee moment? Took the disappointment of being cut from a Master's level team into re-invigorating his career 3. What's your favorite book to give as a gift to others? Watership Down by Richard Adams 4. What did being an editor teach you about community? Publishers understand what the audience wants and then creates that content, Alex is doing this now but for his community! 5. Have you ever worn socks with sandals? In my backyard, yes 6.
