The new definition of painterly success just might be having Elisabeth Condon describe your painting. It's truly that satisfying. Elisabeth is back on the pod to describe a painting, and it's a fascinating one: "Untitled" 1968-69 from the Edge Painting series by Sam Francis. Come along as Elisabeth takes us not only through the painting itself, but also through Sam Francis' life and influences: namely that of his beloved Japan. The concept of "ma" or the potential of emptiness, Asian ink painting, and Francis' unique anti-New York gentle lyricism all factor in to make this talk a riveting deep dive into this Californian-born, second-generation Abstract Expressionist artist. PODCAST - BREAKING GLASS hosted by Dennis Broe. Tuesday and Friday at and 13:00 pm CET. Dennis Broe presents an overview of TV series shows and events. This week, Dennis talks in two parts about on the anti-colonial, anti-racist work of Robert Colescott. This part is about how it was developed in reaction to the de-politicized abstract movement that went before it also centers on Colescott's study with Fernand Leger.
Cubism learned a lesson or two when Fernand Leger’s The Wedding hit. In fact, many art historians joke that this painting introduced Tubism… because reality curves into glorious tubes in this remarkable work. As abstracted as it is, we know what it’s like at this wedding. The bride’s pale body luxuriates across the canvas in luscious hints to the night ahead. This sensual aspect contrasts the strident excitement of wedding activity. These elements intersect, combat, and parallel throughout the work. It feels like a carnival. Fernand was a big fan of the circus and it shows. He creates order too, though. Leger differentiates the space with consistent groupings of shapes, color and texture. Russell & Robert meet artist Wong Ping at Camden Arts Centre, London for a special tour around his solo exhibition 'Heart Digger'. Wong Ping creates digital and sculptural works that reveal very human, often universal fantasies, through absurd narratives. Drawing from his own social encounters, he elaborates his stories into dark humorous tales that touch on political and cultural anxieties. Digitally rendered in a seductive technicolour language, they recall the modernism of Fernand Leger, the pop language of Tom Wesselman or Allen Jones, and the design aesthetic of The Memphis Group and early 1980s video games. These simple but seductive animations also disguise a deeper critique of technology.Wong Ping is the inaugural recipient of Camden Art Centre’s new Emerging Artist Prize at Frieze (2018). The Prize was established in collaboration with Frieze Art Fair, as part of Camden Arts Centre’s commitment to nurturing and celebrating the most innovative artists of the moment, who have yet to receive the recognition their work deserves. The annual prize awards an artist exhibiting in the Focus section of Frieze London with an exhibition at Camden Art Centre. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Coen Brothers take on the Western movie in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Made with money from Netflix, is it REALLY a cinema release? Hadestown is a musical that's stopping off at London's National Theatre on its way from Off-Broadway to Broadway. It sets the Greek myth of story of Orpheus and Eurydice in modern New Orleans (and the underworld of course!) and reimagines the sweeping ancient tale as a timeless allegory for today's world. Chris Kraus wrote the bestseller I Love Dick and now follows it with Social Practices, a particular mix of biography, autobiography, fiction, criticism, and conversations among friends. How does it hold together as a single book? There's an exhibition of work by French artist Fernand Leger just opened at Tate Liverpool charting his development throughout his life. BBC2's Death and Nightingales is an adaptation of Eugene McCabe’s novel set in Fermanagh in 1885, written by Alan (The Fall) Cubitt Tom Sutcliffe's guests are Kate Bassett, Kit Davis and Kevin Jackson. The retrospective charts five decades of her work, reflecting her fascination with mathematics, science and Islamic art. Shahidha Bari reviews.
