Smart manufacturing has moved past the pilot phase, and manufacturers that still treat AI and automation like side projects are running out of time.Rockwell Automation Chairman and CEO Blake Moret joins us to talk about the next era of smart manufacturing: AI-enabled operations, digital twins, autonomous mobile robots, cybersecurity, factory modernization and the workforce needed to enable it.Blake breaks down what Rockwell means by the “factory of the future,” including the company's planned million-square-foot facility and the modernization of its existing manufacturing footprint. He explains why the future of automation starts with identifying manufacturing problems, not technology for technology's sake, and why domain expertise still matters in an AI-driven world. We also dig into Rockwell's 11th Annual State of Smart Manufacturing Report, where AI and machine learning have moved to the top of manufacturers' investment priorities. Blake shares what manufacturers are getting right, where they're still vulnerable, and why U.S. companies need to adopt advanced technology “like they mean it” if they want to stay competitive globally. From digital twins of production lines to the possibility of digitally modeling entire enterprises, this conversation offers a clear look at where manufacturing is headed, and what industry, education and workforce leaders need to do now to keep up.3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Smart manufacturing has moved from experimentation to execution.Rockwell's $2 billion investment in plants, talent and digital infrastructure shows how seriously the company is modernizing its own operations. Blake explains how the planned New Berlin facility and upgrades to existing plants will use digital twins, mobile robots, MES software and edge data to improve customer service, efficiency and scalability.2. AI is changing the way factories are designed, operated and improved.Blake explains that AI and machine learning are simplifying automation by helping engineers design, commission, operate and maintain systems more efficiently. He also describes how digital twins and emulation can de-bottleneck production before physical equipment is running, and how those models could eventually extend beyond the plant floor into supply chain and financial forecasting.3. U.S. manufacturers need to adopt technology like they mean it.In discussing Rockwell's State of Smart Manufacturing Report, Blake points to a sharp contrast between U.S. and Chinese approaches to external risk. His message to manufacturers is clear: advanced technology adoption cannot be a hobby, a pilot or a box to check. It has to become a real source of competitive advantage.Resources in this Episode:Read the 11th Annual State of Smart Manufacturing ReportAcademy of Advanced Manufacturing (AAM) Program for VeteransRockwell Automation's planned 1-million-square-foot "factory of the future"Find more resources on the episode page! https://techedpodcast.com/moret2/We want to hear from you! There is something in this word from Isaac the Syrian that unsettles us a little. Because it speaks of a beauty that is not crafted, not projected, not explained. A beauty that simply… shines. He does not describe a monk as someone who teaches, persuades, or convinces. He speaks of a life so permeated by grace that even the enemies of truth, simply by looking, are pierced. Not by argument. Not by brilliance. But by something that cannot be imitated. The beauty of a life in Christ. And this is where the word becomes very personal. Because what he is describing is not first a role. It is not even limited to the monastic state in an external sense. It is the inner life that has begun to be born within a person when grace is no longer treated as an idea, but as something living… something fragile… something holy. Something that must be protected. There is a tendency in us to think of holiness as something we build. Virtue as something we accumulate. A kind of visible coherence. But Isaac speaks of something else entirely. He speaks of a life that has become transparent. Where nothing blocks the light. Where the heart has been so simplified, so purified, so stripped of its constant grasping, that what is within begins to radiate without effort. And yet, the way he describes this is striking. Silence. Watchfulness. Non-possession. Guarding the senses. Cutting off contention. Brevity of speech. Forgetfulness of wrongs. At first glance, it can feel severe. Even excessive. But it is not severity. It is protection. Because something has been born. And it is easily lost. Grace does not impose itself. It does not force its way to the surface of our lives. It is given quietly. Almost secretly. It begins like a small flame in the heart. And everything Isaac names is not meant to produce that flame. It is meant to guard it. To keep it from being extinguished by the winds that constantly move through us—distraction, judgment, curiosity, the need to be seen, the need to speak, the need to defend ourselves, the subtle violence of opinion, the constant turning outward. This is why he speaks of watchfulness over the eyes. Because what we allow in, shapes what remains within. This is why he speaks of brevity in speech. Because words, when unguarded, scatter the heart. This is why he speaks of cutting off contention. Because even when we are right, we can lose what is infinitely more precious than being right. There is something in us that resists this. It feels like diminishment. Like becoming smaller. Less engaged. Less visible. Less… alive. But the opposite is true. What he describes is the birth of a life that is no longer dependent on being seen, affirmed, or justified. A life that has begun to live from another source. And this is the mystery. The more this life is hidden, the more it becomes luminous. The more it is protected, the more it becomes a refuge. The more it is guarded in silence, the more it begins to speak—without words—to the world. This is why he can say that the monk becomes a place others run to. Not because he is accessible. But because he is real. Because there is something in him that has not been compromised. Something that has not been traded away. Something that has been kept. And this is where the word becomes a question. Very quietly. Very honestly. What in your life have you not protected? What has been given to you… that you have allowed to be scattered? What has been born in moments of prayer, of stillness, of suffering, of grace… that was real… that was alive… and yet was lost because it was not guarded? Not out of malice. But out of forgetfulness. The Fathers are not calling us to severity. They are calling us to reverence. Toward what God Himself has begun within us. Because the tragedy is not that we are weak. The tragedy is that we do not recognize what has been given. And so we treat lightly what is holy. The monk, in Isaac's vision, is simply the one who refuses to do that. Who begins—slowly, imperfectly—to live as though what has been planted in the heart is more precious than anything else. More precious than being understood. More precious than being right. More precious than being known. And in doing so, something begins to happen. The life of Christ is no longer something he believes in. It becomes something that can be seen. Not dramatically. Not visibly in the way the world measures things. But quietly. Like light through a window. And others… even without knowing why… begin to feel it. This is the beauty Isaac speaks of. Not an aesthetic. Not a perfection. But a life so carefully guarded, so gently protected, that it remains alive. And because it remains alive… it becomes light. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:11:10 Fr. Molly McAdams is a tireless advocate for the beef industry with experience rooted in respect for land and livestock. Using science and innovation, she revolutionized the retail meat landscape by bridging the gap between laboratory research and the consumer's dinner plate. Dr. McAdams' commitment to excellence began with her education: a B.S and M.S. from the University of Florida, and Ph.D. from Texas Tech University. Her early career in meat packing, followed by research project management with National Cattlemen's Beef Association, established her as a champion of applied science. She was instrumental in foundational meat science research, but her strengths were best demonstrated by leading implementation of the research at retail. During her 13-year tenure at H-E-B, Molly led the Own Brand portfolio to industry- recognized status as Vice President and Corporate Health & Wellness officer. She pioneered the first pre-cooked meats category, with sales exceeding $115 million in just 5 years; over 1000% growth. Recognizing the retailer's need for value-beef cuts, she drove adoption of Muscle Profiling research findings for H-E-B and their suppliers. Dr. McAdams spearheaded an effort to drive efficiency, sustainability, and operational excellence through packaging engineering that realized over $11 million bottom-line savings in the first year. She also launched the first nutrition-focused food products for children under the retailer's H-E-Buddy brand. In 2011, Molly founded Om3, helping mid-sized meat companies scale their businesses. Through this work, she launched Truly Simple, an award-winning brand focused on beef nutrition. Now leading the Texas Beef Council, Dr. McAdams oversees Beef Checkoff-funded efforts for Texas and continues to drive innovation in promotion, research and education. Molly lives with her husband, Jim, and son, John Kohl, in New Berlin, Texas. Dr. McAdams remains a hands-on steward of the land, embodying the principles of livestock advocacy she has championed throughout her career.
Marcus Aurelius Anderson sits down for a return visit with J. Jason Hicks — author, technologist, and storyteller — to dig into his new nonfiction book The War of Leadership: Hard Lessons and Practical Truths for Surviving In and Beyond Leadership. Drawing from 30 years in the corporate world, Jason unpacks the uncomfortable truths that no one tells new leaders: the manipulation, the blind spots, the politics, and the quiet treachery of organizational life. Marcus and Jason explore why awareness of dark leadership tactics doesn't make you a bad leader — it makes you a prepared one. They also cover the craft of writing, the role of AI in creative work, and why the human element in art, music, and literature will never be replaceable. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS The Dark Side of Leadership — 2:16 Jason reads the defining passage from the book: "You'll be misled. You will be asked to mislead..." — a raw, unflinching look at how leadership corrupts incrementally, and how good people get drawn into cycles they never intended to be part of. The Blame Game & Double-Edged Sword — 6:23 Marcus and Jason break down how leaders attack their predecessors while their own teams are quietly building a case against them. Leadership blind spots, self-preservation, and the vicious cycle of blame are all on the table. The Message in a Bottle — 12:05 Jason reveals who he really wrote this book for: the bright-eyed, naive young professional walking into the arena with no idea what's coming. This is the intel he wishes someone had given him early in his career. Agreeable and Wrong vs. Disagreeable and Right — 17:57 One of the most quotable moments of the episode: Jason drops the line "It's better to be agreeable and wrong than disagreeable and right — you'll be remembered for being disagreeable, not for being right." Marcus and Jason unpack the tactical wisdom of knowing when to push back and when to let the dust settle. Jason Hicks was born in Deerfield, Illinois, raised in New Berlin, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where he studied English literature, religions, and early Christianity. While attending a television screenwriting course, he won the department's screenwriting award for a Star Trek: The Next Generation script — then spent the next 30 years successfully avoiding writing while building a career in technology. Upon leaving that career, he returned to his first love and penned Ruin Waters: Bane Book One of the Annals of the Last Emissary, followed by the second book in the series, The Earth, My War. His debut nonfiction, The War of Leadership: Hard Lessons and Practical Truths for Surviving In and Beyond Leadership, draws directly from his three decades in the corporate world. We are joined with Emma Golden, executive director of the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts. The Golden Foundation was conceived as a way to thank the community of artists for their support, encouragement and friendship. For the Golden family and friends, the Golden Foundation is also a means of celebrating the legacy of Sam and Adele.Emma paints a story in this episode that honors that legacy by sharing stories of her grandparents, Sam and Adele Golden and her parents, Mark and Barbara Golden as they all embarked on the founding of Golden Artist Colors. From the rich experience that Sam had as a paintmaker working along his uncle Leonard Bocour producing hand-ground oil colors for artists in 1936, she reveals that in retirement Sam and Adele returned to the arts materials world joined by Emma's parents, Mark and Barbara. That was 1980 and the company Golden Artist Colors now manufactures GOLDEN Artist Acrylics, Williamsburg Artist Oil Colors, QoR Watercolors, and PanPastels and is a respected leader in the paintmaking industry. In 2012, Golden Foundation opened its doors to a one-of-a-kind residency experience to artists around the world. Across the road from the Golden manufacturing factory in New Berlin, New York, a 19th century barn was renovated into spacious studio and living space for artists chosen through an application process. The artists during their four-week residency have multiple opportunities to meet with paintmakers and experienced material application specialists to learn more about the paints they work with. It is a unique experience that is often not taught or is not accessible to artists and advances each artist's expertise in their field. Emma explains the application process and informs our listeners on the logistics and timetable of the process. She also lays out the day to day living arrangements for the artists. Artists with curiosity and a quest for learning are encouraged to apply. The application will become available in June so keep an eye out for the announcement on Goldenfoundation. org. Thank you, Emma, for this inside look into your foundations opportunities for artists. We are looking forward to staying in touch with you and your residents. Brad Olsen, a leading world explorer, has revealed startling new documents showing how Nazi Germany established at least two bases in Antarctica during and immediately after World War 2. The documents show passports for Nazi personnel traveling to Base 211 in New Schwabenland, and also a New Berlin base in the vicinity of the South Pole. Using translations of German documents gained from a reliable source, Olsen was able to trace for the first time the long journey under the Antarctic ice sheets by German U-boats ferrying supplies, equipment, and personnel to Base 211 and New Berlin. Olsen also discusses claims that the Antarctica Germans (aka Fourth Reich) reached deals with the Eisenhower administration and how the bases were eventually handed over to the United Nations after the Germans left for Mars. Erik caught up with the people in charge including Kelly Eger who had the idea to create an event to raise money and gather materials for teachers to use rather than pay out of their pocket which teachers typically have to resort to.

The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Oneida County: https://bit.ly/3D9yHwfThe Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCXCampfire Conversation: Eric, Ana, and Jake dive into ice in this episode - well, not INTO ice but into the topic of the sculptures people make with ice around Wisconsin in wintertime. These are icy creations you can see, and sometimes even interact with. Many are at festivals. Examples include the Knickerbocker Festival in Lake Mills, named after a company that harvested ice from the city's own Rock Lake. They offer plenty of fun activities, including ice sculpting demonstrations throughout the downtown area and an ice bar with Tyranena Brewing Company, which was named after the lake's original name. Other fun activities like ice golfing, ice skating, and an activity named “Ididherdad” which you'll just have to hear about in the episode. This year, it takes place February 3-4, 2024.Lake Geneva offers similar fun from January 30-February 4 with their classic Winterfest and US National Snow Sculpting Competition, which also features ice sculptures meticulously crafted and presented at locations throughout the city's downtown. You can also enjoy Winter Realms at Geneva National in the Lake Geneva area, which opens in January and will continue as long as the weather allows. Winter Realms is an update of the annual Ice Castles event, featuring sleigh rides, an ice volcano, igloos, tubing activities, mesmerizing ice sculptures, and ice slides. Meander among snow caverns, tunnels and an ice throne as you experience a world of winter magic. More ice-filled events kicking off in January include the massive Waukesha Jan-Boree, a 10-day festival encompassing activities across the city from January 19-28. Ice-related activities include sculpting demos and completed works, ice skating, ice dancing, ice fishing clinics, and more. More sculptures and crafted ice art can be found nearby at events like New Berlin's Winterfest January 6th and Dela-FREEZE in Delafield January 13th with live ice carvings taking place throughout the day.At the other end of the state, late January features the Lake Superior Ice Festival in Superior the weekend of January 26th & 27th, which not only has ice carving and sculptures but an ice throne you can sit on! Just not for too long…That weekend kicks off Friday the 25th with the Winterfest Ice Carving Competition in Green Bay, which pins carvers against each other to create works of art that are proudly displayed in the Broadway District for as long as the weather allows. And yes, they have an ice throne, too!February festivals featuring ice carvings and sculptures include the Kenosha Snow Daze Festival February 4th, which includes tons of demonstrations; Winterfest in Cedarburg February 16-17, where the ice sculpting is a contest; and Appleton's Avenue of Ice, which debuts the 3rd weekend in February every year with over 30 unique ice sculptures displayed in front of the unique boutiques, specialty shops and restaurants.Other sites for ice sculptures include Roger Nelson's Ice Formations, which is a place in Maiden Rock where the Rush River rushes towards the Mississippi and pushes enough water and ice up strategically placed wood and other materials to freeze on them and create some unique looks people are welcome to come and see. They have a Facebook page with photos and regular updates, as Mother Nature basically makes these at random. One fantastic annual creation is in Eagle River: the Ice Castle. The beautiful monument to the city that heads up the World's Largest Chain of Interconnected Freshwater Lakes and Snowmobile Capital of the World is perched at the western edge of the city's downtown right where all the main roads converge. It dates back to 1933 and began with only 250 blocks of ice; today it utilizes over 3,000 blocks and rises over 20 feet, incorporating obelisks and colored flood lights that bring illumination all night long. The Ice Castle, made from foot-thick blocks of ice harvested from nearby lakes and rivers, generally rises around New Year's and stays as long as weather allows. It's a staple of Eagle River's winters almost every year and a beautiful sculpture creation done by volunteers.Companies like designed by Krystal Kleer Ice Sculptures, LLC and Art Below Zero often create the ice sculptures for events, but many establishments hire companies and artists like these to create ice bars for them that patrons love to frequent whilst imbibing outdoors in the cold months. Ice Bars get set up in places like Titletown District establishments in Green Bay, Belair Cantina at The Corners of Brookfield in the Town of Brookfield, Third Ward and the Milwaukee Public Market in Milwaukee, at the Baker House during Winterfest in Lake Geneva, and many more spots around the state. Look forward to the big freeze and enjoy these icy works of art this winter in Wisconsin!
