Slovenia has numerous fascinating art museums, but none that are household names abroad, so they remain very pleasant surprises for visitors who discover them. In this episode, Dr. Noah Charney explores some of his favourite art museums in Slovenia, with a focus on those outside of Ljubljana. To cover some of those in Ljubljana, Dr. Noah Charney asked a few art world friends – Marko Jenko, a curator at the forthcoming Lah Museum, Matthew McQuarrie, a gallery owner and an American architect living in Slovenia, Blaž Peršin, the director of the City Museums of Ljubljana, and an Jaša Mrevlje-Pollak, a conceptual artist, for their tips. With Matthew McQuarrie, an American architect living in Slovenia, who coordinates the Dobre novice art exhibition featuring renowned international artists in Kamnik, the discussion delves into the importance of art in revitalizing communities and promoting critical thinking. Marko Jenko, a renowned curator, offers insights into the Lah Museum set to open in 2024. Blaž Peršin, Director of Museums and Galleries of Ljubljana, oversees various museums and galleries in the city and discusses the diverse art scene in Slovenia, spanning historical influences to contemporary trends. Episode 52 of ‘All About Art': Curating Frieze Sculpture with Fatos Üstek In this episode, I sat down with Fatos Üstek. It was announced earlier this year that Fatos would be curating the 2023 Frieze Sculpture Park, a major annual public art exhibition that places monumental works by leading artists throughout London's The Regent's Park during Frieze Art Fair, one of the biggest art fairs in the world. Listen in to hear me ask Fatos about her background in Mathematics and how it influences her curatorial approach. We of course talk about Frieze Sculpture 2023, as well as other projects such as FRANK Fair Artists Pay, an initiative she launched this year with two artists. This week: the Frieze art fair and spring auctions in New York. As the Frieze Art Fair returns to The Shed in Manhattan, coinciding with the season's big auctions, The Art Newspaper's live editor, Aimee Dawson, and our contributing editor Anny Shaw take the temperature of the market in New York. Just as we completed the episode, the US Supreme Court ruled that Andy Warhol infringed on the photographer Lynn Goldstein's copyright when he created a series of silkscreens based on her photograph of the late rock singer Prince. Coincidentally, we had already recorded an interview with our New York correspondent Laura Gilbert about the fact that a Manhattan judge last week refused to throw out two photographers' long-running copyright lawsuits against the artist Richard Prince, for his New Portraits series, which appropriated their original images. The case is bound to be affected by the Supreme Court's decision, as Laura tells us. And this episode's Work of the Week is Metronome by Sarah Sze, a new site-specific work made for a former first class waiting room at Peckham Rye station in south London, which until recently had been almost derelict. A tender moment is encapsulated in an act of thoughtfulness; a cup of tea at the end of the day, a gift of flowers, a display of love. Tenderness is to give up one's time, attention, precious moments devoted to another. Tenderness is also pain, a moment of fragility, of weakness. It evokes skin which expands, shrinks, multiplies, and shivers to the touch. Skin which is a dying organism, for surely that is what we all are. A tender morsel of meat, deliciously melts in the mouth. Exploring these themes in contrasting ways ‘Try a little Tenderness' brings together the works of Ingrid Berthon-Moine, Flora Bradwell and Damien Flood whose practice is unified in the attempt to capture these fleeting moments. Gem Fletcher speaks to photographer Gareth McConnell in the second episode of a three-part series in partnership with Seen Fifteen Gallery. The Troubles Generation - an ongoing curatorial project by Vivienne Gamble invites artists who grew up in Northern Ireland during The Troubles to shed new light on the impact of being brought up in an era of intense sectarian violence. Gareth McConnell is a London-based photographer with diverse interests and many styles of approach. His work as a fine artist has been given recognition in monographs, cover features, and articles including from Steidl/Photoworks, Frieze, and Aperture. His fine art prints are widely collected. In the past, he has worked as a documentary photographer for the New York Times, and served high-end fashion – Vogue Homme, Pop, and AnOther, and clients like Dior, Gucci and Chloe. He has worked in the music industry with artists including Sia, Disclosure and Ivan Smagghe. McConnell has actively instigated non-commercial projects with other artists and writers, publishing them under his imprint Sorika, and has co-curated a show at London's ICA, and talk events at the ICA and Tate Modern. McConnell has shown at many galleries and fairs, including Carl Freedman Gallery, Frieze Art Fair, Kasmin Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Photographers' Gallery. He is represented in significant private and public collections. He increasingly values a direct relationship with audiences through his websites and social media platforms. Looking ahead to a significant future moment in UK and Irish history with the 25th anniversary of The Good Friday Agreement in 2023, The Troubles Generation project seeks to examine the legacy of The Troubles from the viewpoint of artists born into its divided society and with lived experience of growing up with conflict as the backdrop to their lives. Taking a phased approach to developing photographic projects and new writing, the ultimate ambition is to create a large-scale touring exhibition in 2023. The project's first phase at Seen Fifteen has been generously supported by the Genesis Kickstart Fund, enabling three solo exhibitions with Martin Seeds, Gareth McConnell and Audrey Blue. Seen Fifteen is an independent emerging gallery and project space in Peckham, South East London. Seen Fifteen's artistic programme champions contemporary photography with a focus on emerging, diverse and experimental artists who expand the boundaries of the medium. Founded in 2015 by curator Vivienne Gamble, the gallery has hosted a number of widely acclaimed first UK solo shows for breakthrough photographic artists such as Laura El-Tantawy, Jan McCullough, Maya Rochat and Martin Seeds. Pickpocketing is a form of larceny that involves the stealing of money or other valuables from the person or a victim's pocket without them noticing the theft at the time. It may involve considerable dexterity and a knack for misdirection. A thief who works in this manner is known as a pickpocket. As an occupation. Pickpockets and other thieves, especially those working in teams, sometimes apply distraction, such as asking a question or bumping into the victim. These distractions sometimes require sleight of hand, speed, misdirection and other types of skills. Pickpockets may be found in any crowded place around the world. However, Barcelona and Rome were recently singled out as being particularly dangerous pickpocket havens. Thieves have been known to operate in high traffic areas such as mass transit stations, even boarding subway trains so they can use the distractions of crowds and sudden stop-and-go movements from the train to steal from others. As soon as the thieves have what they want, they simply get off at the next stop leaving the victim unable to figure out who robbed them and when. As entertainment. Pickpocketing skills are employed by some magicians as a form of entertainment, either by taking an item from a spectator or by returning it without them knowing they had lost it. Borra, arguably the most famous stage pickpocket of all time, became the highest-paid European performer in circuses during the 1950s. For 60 years he was billed as "the King of Pickpockets" and encouraged his son, Charly, to follow in his cunning trade, his offspring being billed as "the Prince of Pickpockets". Henri Kassagi, a French-Tunisian illusionist, acted as technical advisor on Robert Bresson's 1959 film Pickpocket and appeared as instructor and accomplice to the main character. British entertainer James Freedman created the pickpocket sequences for the 2005 film Oliver Twist directed by Roman Polanski. American illusionist David Avadon featured pickpocketing as his trademark act for more than 30 years and promoted himself as "a daring pickpocket with dashing finesse" and "the country's premier exhibition pickpocket, one of the few masters in the world of this underground art." According to Thomas Blacke, an American illusionist who holds several world records, it has become more difficult nowadays to pickpocket both in the streets and on the stage because the general population wears less, or lighter, clothing. In 2015 an artist hired a pickpocket to distribute sculptures at Frieze Art Fair in New York. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/law-school/support

It was supposed to be a hailed and more open return to London art week and the Frieze Art Fair in Regent's Park. Sure, it was open last year, but 2022 saw a chance to revive the London art world after the pandemic and recent shock to the pound. But a few weeks ago, an outsider (albeit a much followed one) known as Mr. Doodle sent the message in the form of a massive 12-room Kent-mansion doodle out into the world and every newspaper, blog, social media account had something to say. But we wanted to go there ourselves and talk to the man himself. So that is what we did. What we found was an artist who not only fulfilled a childhood dream of doodling an entire home, but someone with both an earnestness and bold sense of what would make him happy to complete the project. Over two years he doodled on nearly every inch of the home, a home in which he and his wife will move into permanently in the days to come. When the shock and awe wanes, you realize that the public may never get a chance to see this home and the artist himself will be living and amongst his own mind. We asked him about that, the incredible timelapse he made the project and how he hears the critics now. This is the Doodle House. This week: The Collaboration, a new play dramatising the relationship between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat has opened at the Young Vic theatre in London. It looks at the period between 1983 and 1985 in which they worked together on a group of paintings, many of which were shown to critical derision and commercial failure at the Tony Shafrazi gallery in New York in 1985. Ben Luke talks to the playwright Anthony McCarten and the director Kwame Kwei-Armah about bringing these complex characters to life, and the issues, including race and class, that their relationship brings into focus. In today's New York, a Faith Ringgold retrospective has opened at the New Museum; Ben talks to Massimiliano Gioni, the exhibition's curator, about the astonishing breadth of the now 91-year-old artist's work. And in this episode's Work of the Week, Helen Stoilas is at the Frieze Art Fair in Los Angeles, where she talks to Julie Roberts, the co-founder of the gallery Roberts Projects, about Betye Saar's mural LA Energy—created and quickly destroyed in 1983, and now repainted for Roberts Projects' stand at the fair. We are honored to be speaking to Olamide “Ola” Awofeso today! Ola started her career in Public Relations, and she later created her own consulting company. Ola also does marketing and works with non-profits through multicultural events. Before that, she used to be with an agency where she worked on accounts like Walmart, J&J, Loreal, and Procter and Gamble. Ola is also a rockstar on Clubhouse! She is building a community there and sharing valuable information.   Ola is joining us to discuss her experience as an entrepreneur, talk about the power of collaboration and purpose, and share how she used Clubhouse to create a community.  We're sure you will enjoy listening to our conversation with Ola today! Ola Awofeso's bio  Ola Awofeso is a marketer, an event strategist, and the founder of E.K.O Consulting, a marketing and events consulting business dedicated to helping business owners, brands, and nonprofits connect with multicultural audiences through marketing, events, and partnerships. Her love for events began early in her career as she worked as a public relations specialist in New York City. It was there that she got exposed to attending and working on many events. Those events include shows, fairs, and exhibitions such as the New York Design Show, Kipps Bay Decorator Show House, and Frieze Art Fair for clients in décor, design, and entrepreneurship. Later in her career, she was able to work with the Bloomberg team on their New Energy Finance summit and knew that events led by professional and social impact were her niche. Over the years, she partnered with brands such as WeWork and General Assembly on events in her beloved New York City. Olamide is passionate about marketing, events, and community. Some background Ola started her career in PR. She worked mostly with clients in art and décor, and she went to many very detailed trade shows. She got into the events industry because those shows opened her eyes to what was happening in that industry and she grew to love that space. Project management Although some people say that meetings and corporate planning are boring, that is the space that has the most to offer Ola in terms of project management. It also entails a lot of sponsorships that you need to garner for events. With her PR and marketing background, Ola felt she could hone in on that space, and her skills could get utilized most effectively there. Non-profit Ola currently works with a non-profit that works towards getting more black people into technology. Daily, Ola looks at different tech companies. She does that to see if they are trying to get more black talent into the tech space and find out how they are doing it. She is in constant communication with the Growth Marketing Managers because their responsibility is to help the company grow. She is also in touch with recruiters and community managers.  How to create a community Find a space that is not being served and listen to your audience. Ola Awofeso Clubhouse overview Clubhouse is about community-building and allowing people to come in with their ideas and speak freely. When Ola first got onto Clubhouse, she did not see any of the planning clubs, so she created one. By doing that, she had conversations about different topics and she brought people up to the stage on Clubhouse to talk. Then, she started to post rooms more frequently. She also found someone to become her co-moderator at Clubhouse. Leveraging the power of collaboration Collaboration is vital if you want to create an impactful community. Listen to your audience, and give those people the space to speak. Also, be authentic. Ola shares what she knows, and she empowers people when it comes to the industry.  Ola Awofeso's thoughts on understanding your purpose Finding her purpose was all about trial and error for Ola Awofeso. She had to learn to be comfortable in stepping outside of the box and allowing herself to shine. She also had to decide whether her purpose was just about her or about other people as well. She started doing events because she wanted to educate people about their careers and personal development. Once you align your call and your purpose, you can go very far. You need to step back and discover what it is that you are good at doing and know who you are serving. Her first event Ola did her first event because she wanted to educate people who were struggling in their careers.  Creating her own company Ola started her company five years ago. Creating her own company was about finding out which factors and what kind of value she wanted to add to the world, aside from corporate. She also wanted to decide what her legacy would be.  Rebranding Ola learned that it is okay to shift things and change direction. She rebranded her company last year because she wanted to shift who her client would be.  Ola Awofeso, on being mentored Ola Awofeso started her business on her own. But throughout the years, she has had mentors and people from whom she could seek advice. Her brother is a full-time entrepreneur, and he gives her advice. Breaking the solitude of the entrepreneur Tell your circle and your network about what you are doing in your business and don't allow anyone to make you feel a certain way if you decide to become a part-time entrepreneur, because many people build their skills at their day-job while being a part-time entrepreneur. Social media can be a great tool, but not all businesses are on social media because their customers are not there.  Audience Understand where your audience is. It could be email-list heavy, or Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter-heavy. You also need to understand what your focus will be. Once you know that, you can check out different videos, e-books, and podcasts about that niche and share that with your audience. Achieving the best Having a calendar to list her daily priorities is something Ola loves. She used to feel like she was doing too many things at once, so she learned to block the time for her various tasks. Having a project management tool has also been very useful for her. Ola likes to use Asana because it is simple and easy to use. Effective sponsorship Effective sponsorship aligns with whoever your client is. Because when you are looking for sponsorship, you want longevity. Long-lasting and effective sponsorship will build trust for your brand and with others when they come to you. Relationship-building is essential for effective sponsorship. Slavery and empire building shaped Liverpool's development. Can art works help give a new understanding of the city's history? In a discussion organised in partnership with the Liverpool Biennial, Anne McElvoy is joined by the Festival curator Manuela Moscoso, by the artist Xaviera Simmons, the historian Dr Diana Jeater and the composer Neo Muyanga. The Biennial runs from 20 March to 6 June 2021 with art works sited around the city. Neo Muyanga is a composer and sound artist whose work traverses new opera, jazz improvisation, Zulu and Sesotho idiomatic songs. His project A Maze in Grace is a 12'' vinyl record and a video installation at the Lewis’s Building, inspired by the song “Amazing Grace”, composed by English slaver-turned-abolitionist John Newton, who lived in Liverpool. The piece was co-commissioned by Fundação Bienal São Paulo, echoing some of the trading links which operated in the transatlantic slave trade. Xaviera Simmons has previously spent two years on a walking pilgrimage retracing the transatlantic slave trade with Buddhist monks. Her installation at the Cotton Exchange Building uses images and texts set against backdrops of the American landscape to explore ideas about "whiteness". It's co-presented by Liverpool Biennial and Photoworks Curator Manuela Moscoso has worked at the Tamayo Museo in Mexico City and has come up with a framework for the Biennial -The Stomach and the Port- that uses the body as an image to think about the city Historian Diana Jeater, from the University of Liverpool, is also Emeritus Professor of African History at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and teaches themes that help understand African history such as witchcraft and territorial cults, healing systems, nationalist movements and religious institutions. Talk Art Live in London, with Ruinart! Russell & Robert meet Vik Muniz, the superstar Brazilian artist best-known for his complex photography made with a diverse range of materials including sugar, toys, diamonds and even trash to recreate and interpret famous images, such as the 'Mona Lisa' (which he executed in peanut butter and jelly), or a Picasso (created entirely with raw paint pigment). Muniz taps into our collective memory of known and recognisable images and artworks. With a wry and canny combination of high and low, Muniz uses the photograph not in the traditional sense, as a recording of reality, but instead as a document of his illusion. Recorded live in front of an audience at Soho House Greek Street on 1st October 2019, we discuss his new Ruinart collaboration 'Shared Roots' on display this week at Frieze Art Fair in London. As well as looking back to his childhood dyslexia, drawing cartoon clouds in the Manhattan sky (using a modified crop-dusting plane) and his legendary 'Verso' series in which Muniz recreates the back panels of world famous paintings like Van Gogh’s 'Starry Night' or Vermeer’s 'The Girl with a Pearl Earring'. This special edition of the Lisson podcast ON AIR, entitled ‘Voices’, is dedicated to the artist Susan Hiller, who died earlier this year, aged 78. Hiller’s was a unique voice in contemporary art over the last five decades and succeeded in distilling many important truths and posing enduring questions about belief and humanity, often using the speech or the impressions of others, many of which were seldom heard. While a memorial is being held at Tate Modern in the same week as this podcast is being released – as is a presentation of important early pieces, staged in a solo booth at the Frieze Masters art fair – this episode calls on many of her friends, colleagues and admirers from all over the art world to share their memories and interpretations of her life and work. Among these recordings are interjections from Susan Hiller herself, taped at many live panels and conversations held over the last few years, including at Tate Liverpool, Frieze Art Fair, Art Basel, Lisson Gallery, the Jewish Museum in New York, the Model in Sligo, Ireland, as well as for Resonance FM, Slade School of Art, and Hiller's alma mater of Smith College in Massachusetts. Wong Ping creates digital and sculptural works that reveal very human, often universal fantasies, through absurd narratives. Drawing from his own social encounters, he elaborates his stories into dark humorous tales that touch on political and cultural anxieties. Digitally rendered in a seductive technicolour language, they recall the modernism of Fernand Leger, the pop language of Tom Wesselman or Allen Jones, and the design aesthetic of The Memphis Group and early 1980s video games. These simple but seductive animations also disguise a deeper critique of technology.Wong Ping is the inaugural recipient of Camden Art Centre’s new Emerging Artist Prize at Frieze (2018).
