The Danger of Buy Now, Pay Later

“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” — Luke 12:15In an age of instant gratification, getting what we want has never been easier, even if we can't afford it. But as “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) services become increasingly popular, they're quietly reshaping our relationship with money, debt, and even contentment. Let's explore how these programs work, why they're spiritually and financially dangerous, and how Scripture invites us into a better way. What Is Buy Now, Pay Later?Originally used for large purchases like furniture or electronics, BNPL services now allow consumers to split nearly any purchase into multiple payments—even cheeseburgers. DoorDash, for example, lets customers finance their food in four installments. The convenience may seem harmless, but it can mask deeper issues.Companies like Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, Zip, Sezzle, and PayPal offer these options at checkout. According to Experian, more than 80% of U.S. shoppers have used BNPL. The ease is attractive, but the long-term impact can be devastating.BNPL makes it seem like you're not going into debt, but that's exactly what's happening. Small recurring payments across multiple platforms add up fast, leading to overdraft fees, financial stress, and, in many cases, high interest rates—some as high as 36% for missed or extended payments.A $60 DoorDash meal split into four $15 payments doesn't seem bad—until you do it for every meal. Or take a $3,000 couch bought with a BNPL plan: one missed payment, and that couch could ultimately cost $8,000 due to fees and interest.Scripture's Warnings About DebtThe Bible doesn't shy away from warning us about the dangers of debt. Proverbs 22:7 tells us, “The borrower is the slave of the lender.” Debt isn't just a financial issue—it can become an emotional and spiritual burden, dividing our attention and devotion. In Luke 12:15, Jesus reminds us that “life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” Yet BNPL feeds the lie that more stuff equals more satisfaction. Instead of trusting God to provide, we try to manufacture comfort and control through impulsive spending. Why are we tempted to buy now and pay later? Often, it's not out of need, but out of insecurity, impatience, or discontentment. Paul models a better path in Philippians 4:11–13: “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content...I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”True contentment doesn't come from a checkout screen—it comes from trusting the Lord to provide, even when the budget feels tight.A Better Way: Practical and Spiritual WisdomSo, how do we resist the pull of BNPL and grow in godly contentment?Practically:Build margin. Save up for purchases ahead of time.Budget for “wants.” Use a separate category or envelope system.Set spending limits. Use cash or debit card to help avoid overspending.Spiritually:Examine your heart. Ask: Am I trusting God, or just trying to feel better?Pursue contentment. Let God define your enough.Practice gratitude. Train your heart to see God's provision in what you already have.Freedom to Live GenerouslySaying no to unnecessary debt frees us to say yes to generosity. When we live with open hands and open hearts, we reflect the freedom we have in Christ—freedom from striving, fear, and scarcity. And that's far better than four easy payments. So next time you see a “Pay in 4” button, pause. Ask yourself: Do I really need this? Can I pay for it in full? And does this reflect trust in God, or just in a payment plan?Wise stewardship begins with contentment, and contentment begins with Christ. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My husband and I are sending our son on a five-week mission trip to Scotland. We're debt-free and want our kids to stay that way. I'm hesitant to open a credit card, but what's the best, safest way to give him access to money while he's overseas? We recently sold our home at a profit, bought a new one, and are now debt-free. However, the new home needs repairs, and we still have a mortgage. Should we tithe on the profit from the home sale, or use those funds for the house needs?I'm a recently retired teacher with two annuities—one worth $19,000 and the other about $13,000. I've just opened an IRA and wonder if I should roll the annuities into it, or if there might be a better strategy.I've inherited a large amount of cash-valued property and need guidance on how to manage it wisely, especially to minimize potential tax liability. We paid off our home in October 2024. Do we need the deed and title to protect ourselves from fraud, or is it handled automatically?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Christian Credit CounselorsWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money (Pre-Order)Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. In a recent decision, the U.S. Senate voted 52-48 to overturn a rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that would have capped overdraft fees at big banks to a reasonable $5. Instead, banks are now permitted to charge fees upwards of $35 per transaction. This vote has been characterized by advocates as a $21 million gift to big banks at the expense of working families. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau had aimed to address regulatory gaps exposed by the 2008 financial crisis. Nationally syndicated columnist Charlene Crowell shares more information on today's Rhythm & News podcast. Interview by Chris B. Bennett.

It also sets standard for voter roll purges. Two other major pieces of legislation passed the House yesterday: a bill limiting the power of federal district judges to make rulings affecting national things and another overturning bank overdraft fee limits put in place by the Biden administration.

This Day in Legal History:  Wong Kim Ark becomes Wong Kim ArkOn March 28, 1898, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, affirming that a child born in the United States to Chinese immigrant parents was a U.S. citizen by virtue of the Fourteenth Amendment. Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco in 1873 to Chinese nationals who were legally residing in the U.S. but ineligible for naturalization due to prevailing immigration laws. After a visit to China in 1895, he was denied re-entry on the grounds of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which severely restricted immigration from China and barred Chinese nationals from becoming citizens. The Court rejected the government's argument that children of Chinese immigrants were not subject to U.S. jurisdiction and thus not entitled to birthright citizenship. In a 6–2 decision, the Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed citizenship to nearly all individuals born on U.S. soil, regardless of the nationality or immigration status of their parents. This decision established a major precedent for interpreting the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and reinforced the principle of jus soli, or right of the soil. The ruling came during a period of intense anti-Chinese sentiment, when the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and its extensions aimed to restrict Chinese immigration and civil rights. Wong Kim Ark was a significant rebuke to efforts that sought to limit the constitutional rights of U.S.-born children of immigrants, and it laid the foundation for future interpretations of birthright citizenship. The Senate's vote to repeal the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's $5 cap on overdraft fees is a clear signal: protecting bank profits matters more to Senate Republicans than shielding consumers from predatory financial practices. With a 52-48 vote, Republicans—joined by only one Democrat—moved to dismantle a regulation designed to curb exploitative overdraft charges that routinely hit working-class Americans the hardest. This isn't a technical policy disagreement—it's a choice to side with an industry that routinely charges Americans up to $35 for covering small shortfalls, even when the overdrafted amount is often less than the fee itself. The CFPB's rule was narrow, targeting only large banks and credit unions with more than $10 billion in assets, and still allowed higher fees if justified by actual costs. It was a modest, evidence-based consumer protection measure. The financial industry's immediate lawsuit and the GOP's use of the Congressional Review Act to kill the rule reveal the coordinated effort to preserve a lucrative revenue stream. The overdraft fee fight is just one piece of a broader Republican strategy to roll back protections the CFPB has implemented—protections meant to hold powerful financial institutions accountable. No one should mistake this vote as anything other than what it is: an effort by Senate Republicans to keep consumers on the hook, ensuring that banks and credit unions can continue bleeding them dry in the name of "choice" and "flexibility"—buzzwords that conveniently mask an enduring deference to corporate power. They'll couch these kinds of moves in language of fairness–pretending they ensure lower-income consumers are given access to these financial instruments. A moment's reflection, however, makes it clear that even under their best dressed reasoning they're looking to enable banks to charge exorbitant fees to account holders in precarity. Senate Votes to Repeal CFPB's $5 Cap on Bank Overdraft Fees (1)Yesterday, President Donald Trump issued an executive order against the prominent law firm WilmerHale, following its connections to Robert Mueller, the former special counsel who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The order directs federal agencies to cancel contracts with WilmerHale's clients, revoke lawyers' security clearances, and restrict access to U.S. government buildings. This is part of a broader strategy targeting law firms with ties to Mueller's investigation, including Perkins Coie, Paul Weiss, and Jenner & Block.Trump criticized Mueller's investigation as an example of government overreach, labeling it as politically motivated. In addition to its ties to Mueller, Trump also accused WilmerHale of discriminatory practices in its diversity programs, echoing similar claims against other law firms earlier this month. The firm, which has a long-standing history of handling high-profile cases, responded by labeling the order unlawful and vowed to seek appropriate remedies.WilmerHale, a major player in litigation with over 1,100 lawyers, represents a variety of high-profile clients, including Gilead, Comcast, and Meta Platforms. The firm has also been involved in cases challenging actions taken by the Trump administration, fueling further tensions. Notably, Trump also targeted other firms for their involvement in the Russia investigation and opposition research, but some, like Paul Weiss, have managed to have orders rescinded by agreeing to specific terms, including providing legal services aligned with Trump's agenda.Trump Hits WilmerHale With Executive Order Over Mueller Ties (2)Trump targets another law firm, citing ties to Robert Mueller | ReutersA federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a Labor Department rule that would force grant recipients to abandon their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The decision, issued by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly in Chicago, halts a two-week enforcement window of a January executive order that required organizations receiving federal funds to certify they don't operate any DEI initiatives—even those unrelated to their grants. The case was brought by Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT), a nonprofit that trains women for skilled labor jobs and receives federal funding. The judge sided with CWIT's argument that the DEI restriction violates First Amendment protections, noting that such a rule could pressure grantees into self-censorship. Kennelly also blocked the Labor Department from terminating CWIT's funding under Trump's directive to eliminate “equity-related grants,” though this protection applies only to CWIT and not nationwide.Kennelly's order represents a legal pushback against Trump's broader effort to dismantle DEI initiatives across government agencies and contractors. While a federal appeals court recently upheld a temporary ban on DEI programs in federal agencies and contracting businesses, this ruling suggests courts may scrutinize how far the administration can go in policing DEI-related activity outside direct federal oversight. The ruling underscores an emerging legal battleground over free speech, anti-discrimination law, and the limits of executive authority in regulating DEI efforts.Judge blocks Trump's Labor Department from requiring grant recipients to abandon DEI | ReutersA federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to preserve Signal messages exchanged by top officials regarding planned military strikes in Yemen. The messages, inadvertently shared with a journalist from The Atlantic, revealed internal discussions involving Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe about timing and targets of attacks against the Houthi militant group. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg's ruling mandates that all Signal messages sent between March 11 and March 15 be retained by the agencies involved. The order came in response to a lawsuit filed by American Oversight, a government watchdog group, which argued that the use of auto-deleting messaging apps like Signal violated federal record-keeping laws. The lawsuit doesn't focus on the national security aspects of the disclosure but rather on the legal obligation of government agencies to preserve official communications. The controversy deepened after Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly criticized Boasberg, accusing him of political bias and claiming he was attempting to obstruct Trump's agenda. Trump himself has previously called for Boasberg's impeachment after the judge blocked a deportation policy targeting Venezuelan migrants—an action later upheld by an appeals court. The White House has not commented on the matter, but the episode has sparked scrutiny over the administration's handling of sensitive military planning and whether efforts to bypass official communication channels undermine transparency and accountability.Judge orders Trump administration to preserve Yemen attack plan messages | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Sergei Rachmaninoff. This week's closing theme is one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable moments in all of classical music: Variation XVIII from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, in a solo piano arrangement by Schultz. Rachmaninoff composed the Rhapsody in 1934 during his later years in exile from Russia, blending his romantic sensibilities with virtuoso brilliance. The work is a set of 24 variations on the 24th Caprice by Niccolò Paganini, itself a legendary theme known for dazzling technical demands. While most of the piece is fiery and rhythmic, the 18th variation stands apart—lyrical, sweeping, and emotionally expansive. In fact, it's a musical inversion of Paganini's theme, reimagined as a lush romantic melody that seems to rise straight out of the piano's depths. Rachmaninoff himself admitted it was his favorite part of the piece, and it's easy to understand why: it's tender, grand, and full of longing. This solo arrangement by Schultz pares down the orchestral drama but keeps all the expressive power, letting the piano sing with full-hearted warmth. The variation has since transcended its classical origins, appearing in films, commercials, and pop culture, yet it never loses its emotional punch. It's the kind of music that doesn't need explanation—it just resonates.Rachmaninoff, ever the late Romantic in a century veering toward modernism, poured his soul into his music. This variation, placed deep in a virtuosic whirlwind, emerges like a moment of clarity—an unguarded confession in a storm. Let it carry you out this week. This is a public episode. Lex chats with Zuben Mathews - CEO and Co-founder of Brigit. Brigit is a leading consumer financial app in the United States that offers a suite of holistic financial products including budgeting, financial insights, access to paychecks, and credit building. Zuben kicks off the conversation discussing his journey from investment banking at Deutsche Bank to founding one of the largest financial health apps in the U.S. Mathews reflects on his early experiences in banking, where he launched a small entrepreneurial team within Deutsche to leverage the bank's data and client relationships to drive revenue. This experience helped shape his approach to solving real financial pain points, which became the foundation of Brigit. Zuben explains Brigit's focus on addressing the U.S. financial crisis of living paycheck-to-paycheck, a problem he personally experienced as an immigrant student. Brigit's initial product leverages cashflow data to provide instant cash advances, helping users avoid overdrafts and predatory loans. Mathews emphasizes that Brigit's success stems from a commitment to solving users' deepest financial issues and using real-time cashflow data, not traditional FICO scores, to provide financial solutions. The conversation delves into Brigit's subscription-based business model, which offers transparency and value to users, helping them save money while improving financial stability. Zuben discusses how the app has grown to serve over a million users, generating more than $100 million in revenue with a small team of 90. He also addresses challenges in fintech, such as data access in the U.S. compared to Europe's open banking regulations, and calls for more balanced regulation that encourages innovation while protecting consumers. The discussion concludes with Zuben advocating for greater access to bank data and better infrastructure for fintechs, highlighting the importance of innovation in improving customer outcomes in the financial space. MENTIONED IN THE CONVERSATION Brigit's Website: https://bit.ly/4d8tqohZuben's LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3XvsEvT Topics: Fintech, neobank, overdraft, cash advance, subscription, financial wellbeing, PSD2, regulation Tags: Brigit, Deutsche Bank, Plaid, Chime, Revolut, Monzo, Yodlee, Synapse, Coastal Community Bank ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” - Romans 6:6Being born again in Christ changes a person. We're given a new nature that fights against our old, corrupt nature. Sometimes, the evidence of this is in the area of finances. Straight ahead—a journey to faithful stewardship.Bobby's TestimonyIt's always a great privilege to connect with people, answer their financial questions, and offer help whenever possible. Recently, we spoke with Bobby from Nebraska, whose story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith and determination.Bobby was in a tough spot. He had accumulated significant debt, including a car repossession, delinquent medical and credit card debt, and unpaid overdraft loans sent to collections. But despite his financial struggles, Bobby was committed to turning his life around. When asked if anything had changed in his life since accumulating that debt, Bobby shared his story. In his own words, Bobby explained, “Back then, I was big into partying and addicted to drugs. I sold drugs and went to prison for it. Well, now I'm clean and sober. I don't do any of that anymore. I actually have money in my bank account. September 10th, 2021, was the biggest start of it. That's when I gave my life to Jesus Christ. And now I'm just trying to get everything back in line and where it needs to be.”Hearing how Bobby's life has changed since inviting Christ in as his Savior was truly inspiring. His commitment to sobriety and financial stewardship is a powerful example of God's redemptive power.Steps Toward Financial FreedomA few weeks ago, we advised Bobby to take several steps to get his finances in order. First, we recommended that he pull copies of his credit reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion to identify all his debts. Then, we suggested he contact Christian Credit Counselors to help manage his credit card debt through a debt management plan, which would consolidate his payments and help him pay off his debt faster. We also offered to connect Bobby with one of our Certified Christian Financial Counselors (CertCFC) at no charge. This counselor would work with him one-on-one to develop a budget and create a plan for paying off his old debts. Finally, we took a moment to pray with Bobby, thanking God for His miraculous intervention and the gift of eternal life that Bobby had received.Biblical Principles Guiding Bobby's TransformationBobby's journey highlights several biblical principles that are now guiding his life:The Body as a Temple: Bobby's decision to give up drugs aligns with 1 Corinthians 6:19, which reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Recognizing that we are not our own but belong to God is a powerful motivator for making healthy choices.Humility: Bobby's willingness to seek help, even on a public platform, reflects the humility described in Proverbs 22:4: “The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.”Honesty: Bobby's commitment to owning up to his debt is a reflection of the biblical principle of honesty. Exodus 20:16 and Colossians 3:9 teach us the importance of living truthfully, especially as followers of Christ.Repaying Debts: The Bible emphasizes the importance of repaying what we owe. Psalm 37:21 says, “The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives.” Bobby's desire to pay off his debt is a step toward fulfilling this principle.Stewardship: Perhaps the most significant principle guiding Bobby now is stewardship. He wants to manage his finances faithfully, in line with 1 Corinthians 4:2: “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”We were grateful to help Bobby on his journey to faithful stewardship, and we want to extend that same help to you. If you're struggling with your finances, need help creating a budget, or want to develop a plan to pay down debt and start saving, please reach out to us. We're here to help you take the next step toward financial freedom and faithful stewardship.Bobby's story is a powerful reminder that with God's help, it's never too late to turn your life around and get back on track. If you're ready to take that step, we're here to walk alongside you.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 70 and have a lot saved in my retirement accounts. The best thing to do is to make sure you're aware of the cost of the fees beforehand so you won't be surprised at checkout.   When it comes to resort or hotel fees, make sure you explore the listing before you purchase and read all the booking information. Get a good understanding of what's included and what's not. Will you need to pay extra for wifi, breakfast, certain amenities? Make sure that you've reviewed all the information when you purchase so you're fully aware of all the additional charges you might have to pay when booking.  For late payment fees, the most important way to avoid paying them is to, you guessed it, avoid missing payments altogether.  The best way to make sure you no longer miss payments is to stay organized and set up automatic payments. With online and mobile banking you can use bill pay tools to easily automate payments to different payees. Setting this up will ensure your payment will be sent on time every month and you won't get slammed with additional fees. It'll also help your credit score!   An overdraft fee is a charge imposed by a bank when you spend more money than you have in your account, causing your balance to go negative. This fee compensates the bank for covering the shortfall and allows the transaction to proceed. To avoid overdraft fees, set up overdraft protection with your financial institution so the missing funds will be drawn from another one of your accounts. Also, set up account balance notifications that will send an automatic message to alert you when your account balance dips below a set dollar amount of your choice so you always know your account balance before initiating a transaction.  Termination fees are another way people get charged extra in ways they didn't quite expect. Some companies like gym memberships, phone services, internet and more have written contracts where they charge you a fee to cancel your subscription before the contract ends. The best ways to avoid paying too much to cancel a membership is to make sure to review the FAQs and fine print cancellation policy before signing up to learn how much the company will charge to cancel the service.   And our final fee is one you may encounter when getting cash from ATM. ATM transaction fees are common but can easily be avoided with a little planning. Try to find and use ATM locations that don't charge fees like ones at your banks branch location or others that might be part of an ATM co-op. If you're a credit union member, your institution likely participates in a co-op system that allows any credit union member to use another credit union's ATM fee free. You can also check your institutions' website for a list or map of fee free ATM locations in your area like some gas station chains and other locations.  When it comes to paying junk fees it's important to stay vigilant and informed on the most common types of junk fees so you can take measured actions to reduce their impact on your finances.   Have you recently encountered junk fees? Do you have a special strategy you use to avoid them? Our special guest is David Pommerehn, SVP, General Counsel, Head of Regulatory Affairs at the Consumer Bankers Association. In January 2024, the CFPB proposed two new rules: one restricting overdraft fees and the other prohibiting NSF fees on certain declined transactions. The proposals are among the CFPB's latest moves in furtherance of the Biden Administration's “junk fees” agenda. In this episode, which repurposes a recent webinar, we discuss the key provisions of each proposal and entities covered, the CFPB's justification for each proposal, the legal authority relied on by the CFPB for each proposal, business practices impacted by the proposals, and potential legal challenges. Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel in Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group, moderates the discussion, joined by John Culhane, a Partner in the Group, and Kristen Larson, Of Counsel in the Group.
