Jordan Chariton is a Journalist. He's also one of the reasons I'm still as active as I am in the YouTube space. Jordan is the co-founder and Head Journalist for Status Coup News, an indie outlet dedicated to on-the-ground journalism. Status Coup has covered 100s of protests all over the country, they covered the East Palestine chemical spill, and they were the only outlet in the world to cover the UAW strike every single day. Jordan has been investigating the Flint Water crisis for 9 years and counting. Recently, he published a book on the topic and it's a bombshell. Full disclaimer, I'm a proud part of the operation over there.

This Perspectives on Practice manuscript focuses on an innovation associated with “Engaging Teachers in the Powerful Combination of Mathematical Modeling and Social Justice: The Flint Water Task” from Volume 7, Issue 2 of MTE. The Flint Water Task has shown great promise in achieving the dual goals of exploring mathematical modeling while building awareness of social justice issues. This Perspectives on Practice article focuses on two adaptations of the task—gallery walks and What I Know, What I Wonder, What I Learned (KWL) charts—that we have found to enhance these learning opportunities. We found that the inclusion of a gallery walk supported our students in the development of their mathematical modeling skills by enhancing both the mathematical analyses of the models and the unpacking of assumptions. The KWL chart helps students document their increase in knowledge of the social justice issues surrounding the water crisis. Using the mathematical modeling cycle to explore social justice issues allows instructors to bring humanity into the mathematics classroom. Special Guests: Dana L. Grosser-Clarkson and Joel Amidon.
A judge dropped the criminal case against 7 former officials in the Flint water crisis. The excuse involved a legal technicality which further demonstrates the ethical bankruptcy of our legal system. Instead of instructing the prosecutor to fix the error in the prosecution's case, Judge Elizabeth Kelly essentially dropped the case. The case for systemic corruption must be discussed and corrupt judges must be replaced. Next, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, a small Florida town located just 12 miles northeast of Fort Myers, not only sustained minimal damage, but never lost power. How did this happen? The town known as Babcock Ranch is 100% SOLAR POWERED. Furthermore, building codes required all structures to be designed with a "low-wind profile." This miracle of sustainable development was NOT covered by the mainstream corporate news, which is too busy greenwashing fossil fuel. This column was written by noted progressive journalist Thom Hartmann and it ran in Commondreams. We will be discussing this piece as it is clear that the subject of truly green, sustainable development which saved lives, has been blacklisted by corporate talking heads. Come join me. Jeanine

In the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. ascends to power, we'll talk about how a disinformation campaign that downplayed the crimes of the father propelled the son to the top job in that country, we will talk about and the fears for the future. Also, the charges against officials in the Flint, MI, water crisis have all been struck down by a unanimous court decision. Our guest is the retuning Travis Nix of Young Voices, who joins to talk about his recent writing in the Wall Street Journal on the latest version of "tax the rich" schemes, this time through regulation at the Treasury Department by the Obama Administration. Travis also explains why good tax policy is foundational to effective government, how we are a long way away from that, and why so few folks seem to be wanting to talk tax policy despite the importance of the issue. Travis also uses Brazil as an example of how the proposed "double taxing" policy is bad of America, bad for our trading partners and allies, and is really worrisome in the details of how the policy is written. Plus, a story of a charity that tries to help foster kids transition to being adults. Hey gang. We have our Flint Water update with personal tesimonies from residents, a reading of the story of Alicia Love and a short riff on the gangsterism of #MAGA.
Three years after lead was detected in the drinking water of Flint, Mich., state prosecutors say they are dropping all criminal charges filed against a group of eight government officials implicated in the scandal, in favor of launching a new expanded investigation. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the dramatic shift in a statement Thursday. “I want to remind the people of Flint that justice delayed is not always justice denied and a fearless and dedicated team of career prosecutors and investigators are hard at work to ensure those who harmed you are held accountable,” Nessel said. In a separate statement, Solicitor General Fadwa Hammoud and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, who assumed control of the investigation in January, said they had “immediate and grave concerns” about the investigation conducted by the previous team of prosecutors. They concluded that “contrary to accepted standards of criminal investigation and prosecution, all available evidence was not pursued.”

The CAS' decision comes in a challenge to the International Association of Athletics Federations' regulations for athletes with differences of sex development brought by Semenya, the Black South African runner who produces more testosterone naturally than has been deemed typical of cisgender women. The regulations that Semenya challenged would require her to artificially suppress her hormone levels in order to continue to compete in women's events. In the executive summary of the still-confidential full decision, the court explained that the “regulations are discriminatory but that ... such discrimination is a necessary.”
