In this episode, representatives Margot and Sabeen from Fired Up Stilettos discuss their fight for sex workers' rights in New Zealand. They share the genesis of the movement, which began with collective action against exploitative practices at a Wellington strip club, leading to the firing of 19 dancers. The movement has since evolved into a broader campaign for better legislation and rights enforcement. They discuss the challenges sex workers face, including unfair fines, contract changes without notice, and broader industry-specific issues. The conversation also touches on their media strategies, protests, and outreach work to build solidarity among sex workers and gain political support. Additionally, they highlight a recent case involving a top government official, Michael Forbes, to underscore systemic issues in protecting sex workers' rights.LINKSFired Up Stiletto Websitehttps://firedupstilettos.com/YAS Store Bees Knees Knee Pads Affiliate Link - 10% offhttps://www.beeskneeskneepads.com/collections/best-pole-knee-pads?sca_ref=7060136.lpCV4SclDtDonate to YAS Workhttps://yaswork.org/donate/00:00 Introduction and Greetings00:31 The Birth of Fired Up Stilettos00:58 Initial Challenges and Collective Action02:28 Media Strategy and Union Formation03:42 Union Busting and Worker Solidarity06:38 Legislative Efforts and Parliamentary Speeches08:31 Independent Contractor vs. Employee Debate17:11 Exploitation in the Strip Club Industry18:37 Club Practices and Worker Rights23:22 The State of Strip Clubs in New Zealand23:57 Building Solidarity Among Strippers and Sex Workers25:06 Fighting for Rights and Legal Support25:55 Challenges and Collective Power27:21 Political Recognition and Next Steps29:49 Outreach and Community Involvement32:07 Addressing Exploitation and Financial Support34:15 Michael Forbes Scandal38:15 The Need for Legislative Change42:45 Supporting the Movement and Final Thoughts
In our first segment, Latrice Johnson joins us to discuss the recent rally by Amazon workers and their supporters in Maspeth, Queens, protesting the company's recent firing of 105 workers who had supported union activities at the warehouse. Then, we hear from The Indy's Lane Dibbler about her piece "My View from the Back of the Ambulance: An EMT Describes How Medicaid Cuts Will Impact Low-Income New Yorkers.” Finally, we speak with Minneapolis-based freelance journalist Clint Combs about Minneapolis' hotly contested mayoral race where Muslim democratic socialist state legislator Omar Fateh is mounting a strong challenge against the city's business-friendly Democratic incumbent Jacob Frey which has gained momentum since Zohran Momdani's upset victory over in New York City's June Democratic primary.
A fired Amazon delivery driver, Latrice Johnson, discusses the recent rally by Amazon workers and their supporters in Maspeth, Queens protesting the company's recent layoffs of 105 workers who had supported union activities at the warehouse.
We're calling out the blatant hypocrisy of Congressman Bob Latta and the GOP's latest con: rebranding Trump's tax cuts. They're trying to sell you a "Working Family Tax Cut," but the truth is, it's a handout to the rich that guts vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP. We'll expose how they're twisting the truth, even when the polls show that most people—including Republicans—aren't buying it. Are you ready to see through the smoke and mirrors? Then, we're turning the spotlight on the dangerous game of putting questionable characters in charge of our health. We're talking about Robert Kennedy Jr. and his anti-vax agenda. We'll look at the consequences of promoting conspiracy theories and the very real threat of diseases making a comeback. Finally we'll expose a shocking betrayal: an Ohio Union Council endorsing Vivek Ramaswamy, a self-proclaimed "tech bro" whose party has a history of stomping on workers' rights. On episode 235, we welcome Jaz Brisack to discuss unionizing efforts for Starbucks workers and Project Germinal, how unions form and why workers may fear them, the popular ideas of unions and how they're misrepresented by corporate media, Jaz's experiences in the Starbucks union and “salting,” whether corporate managers act in good faith, anti-union tactics and why they should be considered psychological warfare, and how workers can sustain a sense of hope in the face of their significant and persistent professional struggles. Jaz Brisack is a union organizer and cofounder of the Inside Organizer School, which trains workers to unionize. After spending one year at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, they got a job as a barista at the Elmwood Starbucks in Buffalo, New York, becoming a founding member of Starbucks Workers United and helping organize the first unionized Starbucks in the United States. As far as American Icons go it probably doesn't get much bigger and recognizable than Henry Ford and Ford Motors. Not the inventor of the automobile, that credit goes to Carl Benz (go back and listen to that episode) but Henry developed what would become the modern automotive industry as we know it. Assembly lines were a thing, just not with cars until Henry decided to use them to mass produce the Model T. His first mass produced car took the nation by storm and at one point 1/2 of all individuals who learned how to drive did so on a Model T. Where Henry excelled at making affordable reliable vehicles he fell short on personal skills, treatment of his workers, and being a father. He even almost caused the downfall of his company by not being able to tear himself away from his precious Model T and modernize with companies like General Motors who came along and challenged Ford for the top spot and for a while took the crown. Through the "Pony Wars" where each manufacturer took turns one upping each other on Horsepower, to the battle to make the most economical car when the gas shortages hit. The story of Ford is fascinating to say the very least.Side note: Prof Chris was battling through a sinus infection which is why he sounds so sexy. Support the show

How can managers navigate the ever-changing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging landscape? While most people grasp the overall intention of DEIB—fair and equitable treatment for all workers—the specifics are nuanced and easily misunderstood, and they can be difficult to implement, especially in the face of recent pushback.Alida Miranda-Wolff is a DEIB practitioner, author, and podcast host driven by a deep passion for cultivating belonging. In 2019, she launched Ethos Talent, a full-service DEIB and employee advocacy firm that serves companies all around the world. In this episode, she leverages her decade of expertise to explain how support for this field has fluctuated over the years and what leaders—and first-time managers in particular—can do to facilitate the day-to-day integration of these practices, which are deeply intertwined with basic human rights.Elevate DEIB in your own leadership practice with these takeaways:How managers can be inclusive and equitable in their day-to-day leadership; How to navigate difficult interpersonal situations through a DEIB lens; Why the current political climate is such a challenge for DEIB practitioners and managers; The problem with the segmentation of DEIB within organizations.Related Links:The First-Time Manager: DEI by Alida Miranda-Wolff - https://alidamirandawolff.com/book/“Care Work with Alida Miranda-Wolff” podcast - https://alidamirandawolff.com/podcast/Connect with Alida on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/alidamw/Learn more about Alida and her work - https://alidamirandawolff.comWork with Ethos - https://www.ethostalent.com/Bias in Feedback Decision Tree - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C-HMz4RFwQNuIzMgS0wCmafQX09N81lp/viewEpisode 388, How To Leverage Your Power and Push For More Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode388Episode 423, Being White and Latina - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode423Ezra Klein affordability crisis article, “The Economic Theory That Explains Why Americans Are So Mad” - https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/07/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-annie-lowrey.htmlIntercept diversity and social justice article, “the Evolution of Union Busting” - https://theintercept.com/2022/06/07/union-busting-tactics-diversity/Alida's interview with Truthout “Here's How Workers Can Build Power Amid Corporate Co-optation of DEI Programs” - https://truthout.org/articles/heres-how-workers-can-build-power-amid-corporate-co-optation-of-dei-programs/Philosopher and psychiatrist Frantz Fanon's work “Black Skin, White Masks” - https://monoskop.org/images/a/a5/Fanon_Frantz_Black_Skin_White_Masks_1986.pdfFrantz Fanon's other work “the Wretched of the Earth” - https://monoskop.org/images/6/6b/Fanon_Frantz_The_Wretched_of_the_Earth_1963.pdfElite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else) by Olúfẹ́mi O. In one of the worst attacks on a union in Australian history, the Labor government has imposed a dictatorial administrator on the construction union, the CFMEU. This move has disenfranchised the union's entire membership. Chloe spoke to Jerome Small, ex-construction worker and reporter for Red Flag, about the causes and consequences of this unprecedented anti-union attack. Two years ago, workers from several different Trader Joe's grocery stores joined the wave of unionization efforts spreading across the country. Workers in Hadley, Massachusetts, made history in 2022 by not only becoming the first Trader Joe's store to vote to unionize but also by opting to form an independent union, Trader Joe's United (TJU). However, like with Starbucks, Amazon, Medieval Times, and other companies where workers have been exercising their right to organize in recent years, rampant union busting has been part of the Trader Joe's story from the beginning. What's worse, as Alex Press writes in Jacobin, rather than be compelled to follow the law and play by the rules, the supposedly progressive grocery chain has joined Elon Musk's SpaceX in attacking the very constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Board. What is the current state of the union drive at Trader Joe's? What issues are employees (“crew members”) still dealing with on the job, and what can supporters do to help? In this episode, Max speaks with Alec Plant, a worker organizer at the Lincoln and Grace Trader Joe's in Chicago and a member of Trader Joe's United. Move over, first class passengers on the Titanic! America has a new class of doomed elites! Extreme income inequality threatens our democracy and the security of the world, but unions are fighting back, showing our path forward for the safety of everyone. C.E.O.s and billionaires celebrate record-breaking profits, but for everyday workers, wages have remained stagnant, not keeping pace with the rising cost of living. The result? The American Dream is increasingly resembling a Neoliberal Ponzi Scheme, where the promise of prosperity seems to be reserved for nepo-babies. Beyond the obvious moral implications, income inequality has profound consequences for our society. It undermines trust in institutions, worsens political instability, and contributes to declining life expectancy—a stark reality in America today. When the rich get richer and the rest of us get left behind, it doesn't just create social rifts; it destabilizes the United States, and therefore the world. How do we overcome this crisis? The renaissance of unions will strengthen our economy for all and protect our democracy. This week's guest Michael Podhorzer has been on the frontlines of this fight for decades, as the former longtime political director of the AFL-CIO – the largest federation of unions in the United States. Podhorzer is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, the chair of the Analyst Institute, the Research Collaborative and the Defend Democracy Project, and writes the Substack Weekend Reading. A 2021 TIME article described Podhorzer as the architect of a broad movement that helped protect the integrity of our vote in the 2020 election. This week's bonus show, available to subscribers at the Truth-teller level ($5/month) and higher, includes Podhorzer's insights on how to protect the 2024 election, in an excerpt available to all. Exclusive to our Patreon supporters, this week's bonus show also includes a deep-dive examination of the recent arrest of Telegram's C.E.O. Pavel Durov and what that might mean for Russia's global war on democracy. Subscribe today at Patreon.com/Gaslit to help support our independent journalism! * Big Announcement! Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894, when President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September a day off for workers. Labor unions had campaigned for years to gain recognition of both the contributions and the mistreatment of workers. History is littered dirty tricks to keep unions out with bullets and billy clubs. Now it's more genteel, but some so called "good guy companies" are still quietly (and illegally) union busting.
The last few years have seen a wave of labor organizing as it becomes more and more clear to workers that what they do is not expendable, but actually the heart of every business. From walkouts to unionization, workers from Starbucks to Amazon to your local coffee shop have come together to build and exercise their power. In this episode we explore the issues that led people to organize their workplaces, the ins and outs and ups and downs of the process, and the backlash. On the forefront of the next labor revolution, we visit a coffee shop in Maine called Little Dog whose staff starts a union. Then we talk to Robert Chlala from the UCLA Labor Center about the rise in unionization efforts among service workers and the social and cultural ethos in a post lockdown country that have led to this new wave of the labor movement. Sarah Johnson, a registered nurse, joins Nurse Jessica and Nurse Erica to discuss the process of organizing a union at her workplace, Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Michigan. Sarah shares the alleged reasons why nurses at her facility are seeking to unionize, including budget cuts, reduced benefits, and poor working conditions. She describes the tactics used by management to discourage unionization, such as empty promises, division among nurses, and a union buster. The conversation explores the tactics used by union busters and the importance of educating nurses about these tactics ahead of time. It emphasizes the need for nurses to expect and recognize union busting strategies and not fall for them. In this conversation, Sarah Johnson, Nurse Erica, and Nurse Jessica Sites discuss the various tactics used by employers to discourage nurses from unionizing. They cover topics such as misinformation about unions, delaying union elections, manipulating numbers, last-minute surprises, recruiting employees to do anti-union work, captive audience meetings, and temporary improvements to working conditions. The conversation emphasizes the importance of recognizing and not falling for these union-busting tactics. The hosts also encourage nurses to sign union interest cards and stay informed about their rights. "Expect it, recognize it, don't fall for it." Sign the cards! Congratulations to everyone who pitched in to help get out the vote! This night belongs to you and all those who voted to protect abortion in Ohio, protect Virginians from a Republican majority, protect the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and much more on a great night for democracy. This week's bonus episode will look at the election results, what they mean for 2024, and what to know about Trump's shadow network, Project 25, and answer questions from listeners at the Democracy Defender level and higher. One month has passed since the October 7th Hamas terrorist attack, and the Israeli leader who allowed it to happen after empowering Hamas, ignoring several credible warnings, is still in power, overseeing a historically brutal genocide. This episode looks at the Israel-Hamas war in the context of the global war of autocracy vs. democracy, including our own 2024 election. It once again calls for the immediate removal from power of Netanyahu, an important cog in the Trump-Putin global far-right movement that normalizes human sacrifice for power. Like Trump, Netanyahu wages war against the military and intelligence services, surrounds himself with a protective moat of extremists ready to commit violence on his behalf, and terrorizes the families of victims and hostages of October 7th. Let's be clear: Netanyahu's own record shows he doesn't care about the hostages—for more on that, read the show notes. Netanyahu wants and needs this war to stay in power, which means the war strategy itself cannot be trusted and must not be legitimized. A political solution is the only way forward and can only begin with a ceasefire. To dismiss or gaslight over the issue of a ceasefire is to give longtime corrupt criminal Netanyahu good faith and legitimacy after he's spent years trying to overturn democracy in Israel. For those distraught over the crisis in Gaza, this episode includes strategies to push the Biden foreign policy team, just as they had to be pushed on Ukraine, and makes the case for why, if we don't vote in 2024, former Interior Secretary and current House GOP Klansman Ryan Zinke, with his proposal to ban all Palestinians, is back in the White House, along with close Netanyahu co-conspirators the Kushners, and Trump, making Netanyahu even more powerful and dangerous.
