True friendship is rooted in helping others grow spiritually and emotionally, treating them as valued companions who reflect Christ. Every brick in the building matters. On Sunday, President Trump apparently caught wind of that announcement from a CNBC report and took to Twitter, suggesting “This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A.” where the company would pay no tariffs. - There’s some news about one of the Detroit area’s largest remaining abandoned shopping malls, Summit Place. - A key deadline in the granting of licenses to medical marijuana facilities looks set to be extended, meaning some facilities will be able to keep operating during the licensing process. - There’s a big mural nearing completion in Hamtramck that pays tribute to Detroit City FC and its passionate fan base. - The city of Detroit has a new strategic transportation plan that they unveiled Friday. The plan focuses on improvements to Detroit’s transportation system. It’s not just updates to the bus system, which is getting 50 new bus shelters. The plan looks at projects that would slow down cars in neighborhoods, resurface more than 300 miles of roads, implement smart technology in signals…. and of course, lower the highest-in-the-nation car insurance rates in the city. - A taster of beer news for you. The automotive industry is always changing. But two of the more significant announcements in recent years — the apparent demise of the VW Beetle and the jettison of the majority of Ford sedans — is the focus of Episode 41 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the recent announcements by the respective carmakers in the news-oriented edition of our ongoing week chat about all things cars and trucks. Image © James Raia/2017 The pending loss of several Ford models and the icon Beetle came, respectively, in a press release from the former and the text of a speech by a VW executive in Europe. The Beetle was first sold in the United States in 1949. Sales of the iconic vehicle suffered in 2017, with 15,116 new units sold. It was 3.2 percent lower than 2016 sales. Also in Episode 41, we discuss Ford's massive pending changes. The carmaker recently announced it “will transition to two vehicles.” The remaining sedans will be the iconic Mustang and an unannounced vehicle, the Focus Active. Currently, Ford sells six sedans and coupes in North America: the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, C-Max, Mustang and Taurus. This lineup hits multiple segments, from the compact Fiesta to the mid-size Focus, C-Max and Fusion to the full-size Taurus. The Mustang stands alone as the lone coupe. It's likely Lincoln's sedans will also disappear, though this was not explicitly stated in today's press release. Lincoln currently sells the mid-size MKZ and full-size Continental — both share platforms with Ford counterparts. If Ford is phasing out the development of sedan platforms, Lincoln will likely suffer, too. John Carmichael, CEO, Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council talks about Ford who will stop selling every car in North America but the Mustang and Focus Active.

Ford Motor Company yesterday released its first quarter 2018 financial results. In the release Jim Hackett, president, and CEO of Ford provided an update to Ford's strategic framework, declaring one way that Ford will create long-term value is by: Building a winning portfolio and focusing on products and markets where Ford can win. For example, by 2020, almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities, and commercial vehicles. Given declining consumer demand and product profitability, the company will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America. Over the next few years, the Ford car portfolio in North America will transition to two vehicles – the best-selling Mustang and the all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year. The company is also exploring new “white space” vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space, and versatility. Currently, Ford sells six sedans and coupes in North America: the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, C-Max, Mustang, and Taurus. This lineup hits multiple segments, from the compact Fiesta to the mid-size Focus, C-Max, and Fusion to the full-size Taurus. The Mustang stands alone as the lone coupe. It may be likely that Lincoln's sedans will also disappear, though this was not explicitly stated in yesterday's press release. Lincoln currently sells the mid-size MKZ and full-size Continental — both share platforms with Ford counterparts. Since Ford will be phasing out development of sedan platforms, Lincoln may suffer, too. This reduction in traditional cars was a long time coming. North America consumers have increasingly turned to crossovers, trucks, and SUVs over sedans and small cars. As of April 3, according to the Wall Street Journal Top 20 Auto sales in March – 13 are a combination of SUV, Pickup Truck, and crossovers. The Ford F-150 tops the list for March at over 87,000 sales. The Toyota Camry comes in at fourth with over 35,000 in sales. It will be interesting to see if other automobile manufacturers follow the Ford strategy.
