In electric vehicle (EV) batteries, the anode serves as a critical component, acting as a storage vessel for lithium ions that are then released when the battery is being used to power the car. Graphite anodes, the current market dominators, have reached their peak energy density. This limitation is prompting a shift toward Silicon-based anodes, which offer up to 10 times the energy density. Major players like Porsche, Mercedes, and GM are embracing this technology, recognizing its potential to revolutionize EV performance. But while silicon-based anode materials hold great promise for batteries, they are known to suffer from significant degradation during charging and discharging cycles. Solving this problem will open up a market for silicon anode materials that could reach $130B by 2033. ENTER HPQ SILICON INC. (TSX-V: HPQ) (OTCQB: HPQFF) HPQ Silicon is positioning itself to become a key supplier of Silicon materials in battery anodes, which aligns with the US and Canadian government initiatives to establish domestic battery manufacturing ecosystems in an effort to reduce reliance on China. Novacium, HPQ's France-based affiliate, has acquired patents enhancing anode material performance, particularly in silicon-based Li-ion batteries. With the pressing demand for domestic battery material suppliers, HPQ Silicon's advancements in silicon-based anode material position it as a crucial player in meeting the evolving needs of the electric vehicle industry while addressing supply chain vulnerabilities. OVERALL CAPACITY IMPROVEMENT OF ~30% VS. GRAPHITE BENCHMARK HPQ announced remarkable results from the initial 50-cycle tests of GEN2 material. These tests demonstrated a 30% improvement in capacity compared to graphite benchmarks and a 14% enhancement over their GEN1 materials, positioning the company at the forefront of the battery innovation race. MINIMAL DEGRADATION The GEN2 material displayed minimal cycle degradation, with only about a 1% increase over 50 cycles, indicating robust durability. STRATEGIC VISION The results underscore HPQ's strategic vision to become a leading manufacturer of advanced silicon-based anode materials in North America and Europe. TRANSFORMING BATTERY TECHNOLOGY The tests, conducted on 18650 industrial batteries, revealed the following: Capacity Comparison: Batteries with 100% graphite showed an average capacity of 2,775 mAh, while those with GEN1 and GEN2 materials exhibited 3,174 mAh and 3,379 mAh respectively. Durability Insights: Over the 50 cycles, GEN2 materials not only maintained superior capacity but also demonstrated negligible degradation, ensuring longer battery life. Dr. Jed Kraiem, COO of Novacium, emphasized the practical implications of these results, stating, “These results continue to showcase our ability to produce a blend of graphite and advanced silicon anode material that can be seamlessly integrated into existing anode manufacturing facilities, improving overall battery performance.” Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of HPQ Silicon Inc., noted, “These achievements open new doors for HPQ as we strive to become a manufacturer of next-gen engineered silicon-based anode materials in jurisdictions that support these types of initiatives.” As HPQ Silicon Inc. and Novacium continue to push the boundaries of battery technology, their GEN2 anode materials mark a critical step forward. This breakthrough not only highlights HPQ's innovative capabilities but also underscores its potential for significant market impact.

On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels Uncle Tuck-er-we-mean-Jimmy gets angry, political, and straight to the point. You don't need a Masters in Physics to know that batteries don't work as well in the cold, but apparently a lot of people in Chicago and the Midwest didn't get the memo. NY'ers did, because they don't buy them in droves unless they need the EV tax write off. Even with temps dipping down into the 30's in the incredibly EV heavy market of Austin, people aren't really impressed with their EV purchases. We go into everything from Range Anxiety, to how the Nords deal with their cold-weather EV's, and get into some of the American motoring culture's inherent abhorrence to the concept. There are genuinely good hybrid cars at this point in the game, so pushing for full EV hegemony by an arbitrary date seems not only counter-productive, but completely undoable given the nature of automotive development/ product life cycles. The fact that more advanced biofuels and hydrogen developments paired with the first generations of EV's getting real-world miles underscore one of the other major issues at the heart of EV consumption: recycling. As American's there is also that underlying fact that we don't really like being told what to do, how far we can go, and what we can buy. This is a wild one: think, it's not illegal yet! Also Uncle Jimmy pitches Frankenstein-ing half a dozen X6's into one good one over buying an X6 Hybrid. This episode is distributed by The Wrenching Network. After all, range anxiety is well known when it comes to electric vehicles. And the industry is working hard to improve ranges, we hear. So why bother? It wasn't serious academic articles but rather some videos, gleaned here and there on the web, that brought me to write this post, a bit for the fun, but also to illustrate the very peculiar situation in which the car industry and society in general, i.e. everyone of us, are now confronted to with this push for EVs in a number of countries. With gasoline and diesel cars, range is not really an issue. Car manufacturers can easily increase the dimension of the tank, to ensure sufficient range. As previously discussed, energy density of such tank is about 100x superior to that of a battery. There is no range anxiety with conventional vehicles, it's just one of the many questionable novelties brought by the EV paradigm. Also not existing with conventional vehicles are related issues such as long charging time, scarcity of the charging stations, impossibility to secure conventional help, with just a jerrycan of gasoline or diesel, in case you run out of gas, etc. etc.Ladies and gentlemen, with electric vehicles, everything changes! But not for the better!

Chicago just landed the 2024 Democratic National Convention, an update on the business of golf in Chicago and why a long-distance journey by electric vehicle can be a risky proposition.
Ponder this, non-EV owners: Would you accept an EV as your next vehicle if, no matter your budget, you knew you'd always have the range you needed without ever having to plug in to charge up?If you ask Jeremy McCool, founder and CEO of HEVO, this promise will be the catalyst that will convert the masses to EV owners."The one thing that wireless does better than anything else in terms of accelerating EV adoption is that it can provide the ability for drivers to drive and charge at the same time. And this year... we will be demonstrating in the Detroit area highway speed tests with 200-kilowatt wireless dynamic charging. So an [electric] vehicle will be driving at highway speeds, collecting charge as it goes," McCool says.In this episode of The Amped EV Podcast, McCool talks us through reasons why fleets are switching to wireless EV charging, how wireless charging works and why tollways that charge your car while you're driving might be the next evolution of U.S. driveable infrastructure. The Buzz: www.thebuzzevnews.comAutel Energy: www.autelenergy.com

Russ Mitchell who covers the rapidly changing global auto industry, with special emphasis on California, including electric vehicles, driverless cars and vehicle safety at The Los Angeles Times once again joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy Podcast to discuss overcoming electric vehicle charging anxiety. The conversation begins with Russ discussing how voters in California are leaning on Prop 30 which would raise taxes on California residents with an annual income over $2 million by 1.75% to a State Income tax of 15.05%. The ballot measure has significant backing from Lyft, as they contributed $45 million to influence voters to vote yes on Prop 30.Lyft made the political contribution because the State of California is requiring 90% miles driven in rideshare vehicles to be electric by 2030.As everybody knows, drivers aren't employees, but contractors buy those cars. So they want to make it easier for their drivers to be able to buy an EV and be able to use the EV. – Russ MitchellLyft's biggest competitor Uber, has not made a contribution or a public statement in regards to Prop 30. They have been silent. While Uber has been silent, Governor Newsom of California has been publicly questioning why Lyft is funding Prop 30 in TV ads and mailers. Then there is the recent UC Berkley/LA Times poll which found that only 20% of California consumers plan to buy an electric car as their next vehicle. With 80% of consumers not planning to buy an EV as their next vehicle, Grayson and Russ discuss what will happen to rideshare prices and the 2035 mandate banning the sale of new gas-powered cars. The law was passed, the arguments were made and it's just expected to happen. It will be a political fight, both within bureaucracy and in the Legislature and in the Governor's office to deal with it if it proves impossible. – Russ MitchellIf the ban is pushed back due to the fact that it turns out to be impossible, who is to blame and what will be the political blowback? Grayson and Russ discuss what it could look like from a political perspective. With the State of California clearly moving towards an all-electric future, the demand for EV charging infrastructure is only going to grow. While the demand for charging infrastructure grows, the need to ensure that the chargers are reliable grows as well. Without a reliable charging network, consumers anxiety will only grow leading to decline in EV adoption. The California Energy Commission is dolling out billions of dollars in funding to build out EV charging infrastructure with the requirement that EV chargers are functional at least 97% of the time. While 97% reliability sounds good in theory, however there is no standard to define what defines charger up-time.The charger companies are coming up with all sorts of different formula that would in effect as a consumer coming up to a gas pump expecting that 97 times out of a 100 it would be working may not be anywhere close to that. – Russ Mitchell Without guaranteed up-time and reliability, consumers will begin to experience charging anxiety the same way they experienced range anxiety when electric vehicles were first introduced. On a recent trip down I-5 in California in a Ford F-150 Lighting, Russ experienced the California EV charging experience first-hand and it was not pretty. At a charging stop along the route where only one charger was working, Russ spoke with a fellow traveler about charging and that individual said; “I do not have range anxiety, I have charger anxiety”. Charging anxiety is the new range anxiety. In order to usher in an all-electric future, the consumer has to trust the technology and the fueling mechanism the same way that the trust gas-powered car and the gas stations where they refuel. The question is with so many problems, and with so many billions of dollars raining down is this going to be fixed? That is really an open question and the entire viability of the EV market is going to depend on the public charging situation and whether they can get it fixed. – Russ MitchellThis is where Tesla shines, Tesla owners trust when they pull into a Tesla Supercharger station the chargers are going to work. When compared to all other electric vehicles, Tesla has the most superior charging network as they developed it from the ground-up without relying on 3rd party charging partners. In the future do other electric vehicle companies form a consortium to own and operate their own chargers that are reliable and meet up-time guarantees that consumers trust? It's possible as EV manufacturers outside of Tesla still have to develop charging trust with their customers. Wrapping up the conversation, Russ shares his opinion on what the future of energy looks like in California.Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Thursday, October 27, 2022See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

One reason many people are hesitant about switching to an electric car is range anxiety, the fear that their car's battery will die on them in the middle of a trip. It is pretty much the same thing as running out of gas, but somehow it seems like more of a danger. Perhaps this was […]
Greg Balkins from Transit Systems was not sure what to expect when the first electric buses rolled out on Sydney routes. It turns out he needn't have worried - they have performed far better than expected, and the passengers, drivers and mechanics love them.
