Defense Begins Case in Karen Read Murder Trial with Testimony from Snowplow Driver

The defense team in the high-profile Karen Read murder trial began presenting its case on Friday, following the prosecution's conclusion after calling 68 witnesses. Defense attorneys Alan Jackson and David Yanetti called their first witness, snowplow driver Brian “Lucky” Loughran, whose testimony they believe is crucial to challenging the prosecution's timeline and theory. Loughran, a Canton town employee, testified that he was plowing his regular route during a storm on the night of January 29, 2022, and passed by 34 Fairview Road, the location where Boston police officer John O'Keefe's body was later found. According to Loughran, he drove by the house at 2:45 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. but saw no body on the lawn either time. “When you make that first pass by that residence at 2:45 in the morning, sir, with your headlights on,” Attorney David Yanetti asked, “What, if anything, did you see on the front lawn in the area of the flagpole?” “I saw nothing,” Loughran replied.  “If there had been a six-foot-two, 200-pound man lying in the snow there, would you have seen it?” Yanetti inquired.  Prosecutor Adam Lally objected to this line of questioning, and Judge Beverly Cannone sustained the objection. Loughran later testified that he saw a Ford Edge parked near the flagpole on a subsequent pass, a vehicle owned by Brian Albert, the then-owner of 34 Fairview Road. Prosecutor Lally challenged the reliability of Loughran's testimony, suggesting that his account has changed over time and questioning his timeline. Despite these objections, the defense maintains that Loughran's observations are pivotal in disproving the prosecution's case. “I saw nothing,” Loughran reiterated, emphasizing that he had a clear view of the lawn and would have noticed a body if it had been there. He also mentioned seeing a car parked in front of the house during his later pass but chose not to report it due to his familiarity with the Albert family.  In a significant development in the Karen Read murder trial, Dr. Marie Russell, a retired emergency room physician and forensic pathologist, testified that the wounds on John O'Keefe's right arm were likely caused by an animal attack, potentially by a large dog. Dr. Russell's testimony aligns with the defense's theory that O'Keefe was attacked by "Chloe," a German shepherd mix living at the scene. "I have a very strong interest in wounds in general, and I have a strong interest in dog bites in particular," Russell explained. She has extensive experience in the field, having seen over 500 patients with animal-related injuries and authored several peer-reviewed papers on law enforcement dog bites. Defense attorneys Alan Jackson and David Yanetti used Dr. Russell's testimony to challenge the prosecution's claim that Read struck O'Keefe with her SUV. Projecting an image of O'Keefe's wounded arm, Jackson asked Russell to describe the injuries. She pointed to "a number of patterns" in the wounds, including parallel lines she identified as "inflicted by either teeth or claw marks" and "punctate" marks from a pointy tooth.    When asked if she believed the injuries were from an animal attack, Russell replied, "Yes, based on a reasonable degree of medical certainty." During cross-examination, Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally questioned Russell's qualifications, noting she is not certified in forensic medicine or pathology and last worked in a coroner's office in 1995. Russell acknowledged these points but stood by her assessment, stating she formed her opinion after reviewing hospital records, autopsy photos, grand jury testimony, and local dog bite reports. The defense argues that O'Keefe was beaten inside the house and bitten by Albert's dog before being placed outside, countering the prosecution's timeline that O'Keefe was hit by Read's SUV around 12:45 a.m. The defense pointed to Chloe, the dog living at 34 Fairview Road, as the likely culprit for O'Keefe's arm injuries. With a full week of testimony expected this week, the defense aims to conclude their presentation quickly. Attorney Yanetti suggested to Boston 25 Investigative Reporter Ted Daniel that they could wrap up by this week with only three witnesses left to call. Judge Cannone has also indicated that jury deliberations could begin this week. Karen Read maintains her innocence, telling reporters, “There is no case against me. After eight weeks, it's smoke and mirrors and it's going through my private life and trying to contrive a motive that was never there.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Ron starts this episode railing about how auto repair is being judged by many and done by few and the amateur pontificators. He makes a strong case about how auto repair needs to be a more respected profession. He takes a call on a 22 Colorado with a low voltage warning and explains why the system is operating as designed. Prosecutors allege that Karen Read hit her boyfriend, Boston Police officer John O'Keefe, at about 12:45AM with her car when she left him off at a party on Fairview Road in Canton, MA and "left him to die in the middle of a snowstorm" after the two got into an argument earlier in the evening while the couple and Okeefe's work associates were at a local bar. She has been charged with second degree murder. The defense argues in this hearing that their client has been kept from receiving important evidence through discovery after more than a year, with the Distract Attorney offering only "on-going excuses" as to why the defense has not received important physical evidence. The defense further argues that because of lack of State cooperation and due to the cost of private testing, bail should be lowered to help pay for these private tests. That their client is not a flight risk and will turn over her passport.   In this hearing the defense goes deeper in their attacks against the State, claiming that investigators intentionally said no plows went by the home in the early morning hours, but a plow driver did drive by at about 2:30am and saw no body in the yard in the early morning hours, but saw a "Ford Edge" parked in front of the house for about an hour, they say, further supporting the defense's theory that John O'Keefe was not killed when Karen Read left him off, but was bludgeoned in the house and brought out to the front of the home to die much later. Car linked to escaped inmate corrections officer found in Tennessee The car linked to escaped Florence, Alabama, inmate Casey White and jail employee Vicky White was ditched in Williamson County, Tennessee, just hours after the jail break, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office said. Authorities first spotted the car around 3 p.m. CT on April 29 -- hours after the escape -- and it wasn't until Thursday night that the car was connected to the Whites, sheriff's office spokeswoman Sharon Puckett told ABC News. There's no sign that murder suspect Casey White, 38, and Lauderdale County Assistant Director of Corrections Vicky White, 56, are still in the area of Williamson County, which is about a two-hour drive north of Florence, the sheriff's office added. Authorities with the U.S. Marshals Service searched the area Friday morning but found nothing to indicate that the pair was still in Williamson County, Puckett said. "We don't believe they're anywhere near us," she said. Lauderdale County assistant director of corrections Vicky White and inmate Casey Cole White. However, authorities are still canvassing the area for any witnesses and are looking into whether any cars were reported stolen around the time the Whites' car was ditched, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said at a news conference Friday. Nothing was left behind in the car, the sheriff said. Casey White and Vicky White may be driving a 2007 orange or copper Ford Edge with m...Read More Vicky White withdrew approximately $90,000 in cash from multiple banks before allegedly fleeing, Lauderdale County, Alabama, District Attorney Chris Connolly told ABC News. He said the banks were local to the Lauderdale County area, but he could not say when she withdrew the money. On April 18 -- just days before she allegedly fled with inmate Casey White -- Vicky White closed on the sale of her home for just over $95,000. Singleton has said that investigators suspect Vicky White is "flush" with cash from the sale. MORE: Missing corrections officer 'willingly' participated in inmate's escape, sheriff says It's now been one week since Casey White and Vicky White went missing. The two are not related. Authorities said they believe Vicky White willingly participated in the April 29 escape from the Lauderdale County jail. The pair "may be armed with an AR-15 rifle, handguns and a shotgun," the U.S. Marshals Service said. The sheriff acknowledged that the pursuit is "behind where we'd like it to be" and said Vicky White's law enforcement background has likely helped her evade authorities. "This was a very well thought-out plan and her knowledge has put us at a loss," he said. Vicky White and Casey White disappeared after Vicky White allegedly told her colleagues that she was taking Casey White to the Lauderdale County Courthouse for a "mental health evaluation," the sheriff said. He didn't have a court appearance scheduled, Singleton said. Vicky White also allegedly told her colleagues that she was going to seek medical attention after dropping the inmate off at court because she wasn't feeling well, but Singleton said his office confirmed that no appointment was made. MORE: Inside escaped Alabama inmate's criminal history as manhunt intensifies Singleton said Friday that his message to Vicky White is: "Hopefully we find you safe." Singleton has described Vicky White, a 17-year veteran of the department, as "an exemplary employee" until now. Vicky White has submitted her retirement papers and the day of the escape was her last day, the sheriff said. At the time of his escape, Casey White was facing two counts of capital murder for the stabbing Connie Ridgeway in 2015, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Manhunt for dangerous inmate continues. Alabama jail guard Vicky White had secret phone calls over the course of two years with the murder suspect she helped smuggle out of jail last week. The corrections officer kept her 'special relationship' with Casey White alive while he served a 75-year sentence in state prison for a crime spree that involved him shooting at his ex-girlfriend, according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton. Casey was moved from state prison to the county jail where Vicky works in February to face trial on separate capital murder charges. Vicky then sold her house and planned to retire on Friday before taking off with him instead. A warrant has been issued for her arrest. Video of her leading the 6ft9in inmate out of jail shows she was 'prepared' to help him escape, says Human Behavior Academy president Susan Constantine. 'It was really obvious to me what was going on here was planned out, methodical, and she had played it out in her mind, even to where how she parked the car,' she told Fox News. 'She was prepared.' Her 'waddling gait' as she stepped out of her car and walked in to retrieve Casey shows she was 'rough around the edges' and somewhat masculine, Constantine said. Authorities are on day seven of a US Marshal-led manhunt for the fugitive pair. They could be armed with an AR-15 and a shotgun and may have used a copper 2007 Ford Edge to get away Surveillance video shows the moment Vicky White, 56, snuck 'monster' Casey White, 38, out of jail. She parks her cruiser by the door and takes her time exiting the vehicle, leaning back into the seat to grab something. She 'waddles' into the facility and leads Casey out, holding the door for him as he's shackled. 'She doesn't seem to have a care in the world,' said Constantine, the body language expert. 'Her stride movements are just at ease. There's not a sense of franticness or rapid movement.' Dave Katz, a former DEA special agent who helped hunt down mobster Constabile 'Gus' Farace, says the pair could be anywhere. 'If she's smart, you're going to have a hard time catching her,' he told Fox News, adding that he would start the search by looking at where she had been shopping, what she had been buying, and who Casey had been talking to right before they left. 'She might not have used cash – she would have bought them in advance,' he said. 'If he's a backwoodsman, if he can sustain them hunting and fishing, I wouldn't discount that the people in the area, who live there, who may even know him, they'll tell you where [he would fish or hunt].' --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

In New York State's Finger Lakes region, Route 89 runs north, out of Ithaca, up to Lake Ontario. Route 89 doesn't look any different than any of the other state routes, in New York State, but it has a dark secret. You see, Route 89 has a history of Dogman encounters. Late 1 night, tonight's guest, Judy, was driving home from Cornell University's emergency veterinary clinic, with her neighbor and her neighbor's dog. They had just rounded a corner, in Judy's Ford Edge, when all of a sudden, up ahead, Judy saw a dark figure start to cross the road. At 1st, she thought it was a large, wounded dog, due to its strange movements. It wouldn't be long, though, before she realized that was no dog. That's because, as it was crossing the road, in front of her, it stopped and blocked her lane... Don't forget to check out tonight's new episode of My Bigfoot Sighting. In what's become an annual tradition, we take a look back at the cars that stood out over the last year, both the good and the bad. But no review of 2015 would be complete without discussing the Volkswagen emissions scandal. Our testing reveals that VW themselves may have created an efficient alternative to diesels, with their new 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. Moving on, we look at the cars that most impressed us. It was a good year for SUVs, with mentions going to the Kia Sorento, Ford Edge, and Volvo XC90. We're even more in agreement about the test cars we disliked the most over the last year, including the Fiat 500X, Acura ILX, and Land Rover Discovery Sport.
