Paul Prestopino was a musician, inventor, and technician with a long and varied career. From 1970 until its closure in 1989, Paul was a technician at the Record Plant in NYC, a venerated studio that helped produce an endless stream of hit records and launched dozens of careers for the engineers and producers that worked there. While working at the studio, Paul, known to everyone as “Presto,” was charged with the maintenance and care of the recording equipment, but he also played on dozens of albums for bands like Aerosmith, The Hooters, Alice Cooper, Slade, and Edgar Winter. He was also an integral member of the bands of Peter, Paul, and Mary, John Denver, and The Chad Mitchell Trio. Paul was part of the lifeblood of the Record Plant, and his passing in 2023 was felt deeply by those who worked with him at the studio. Our very own John Agnello organized this special memorial episode for Paul, where we interview Record Plant alumni and Paul's brother, Greg Prestopino, to pay homage to a man who touched so many lives through his work and music.

https://youtube.com/live/p3sMg29xXtk Any guitarist who's been around long enough has dealt with their share of imitators. It's inevitable that someone will borrow their style, and while it can be frustrating, the true mark of a great guitarist is staying ahead of those who try to follow in their footsteps. Although no one could quite replicate Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking style, he once called out a session guitar legend as one of the biggest copycats he'd ever encountered. It's hard for any guitarist not to be influenced by Eddie. While tapping had been around in some form before him, Eddie perfected it, using it to craft entire musical passages. There were glimpses of it on Steely Dan records, but when Van Halen dropped ‘Eruption,' it was like watching someone reinvent the guitar in just two minutes. Suddenly, the same old blues licks weren't going to cut it anymore—Eddie had raised the bar for everyone. The session scene, though, had already started exploring different musical directions. Steely Dan, for example, had top-tier jazz and fusion musicians, but Rick Derringer was making waves on the rock side. While he was known for his hit ‘Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,' Derringer was also celebrated for his standout work with Edgar Winter, particularly the iconic lick in ‘Free Ride.' Despite his own skills, Derringer couldn't resist drawing from Eddie after seeing Van Halen on tour. But instead of just being inspired, he started outright copying Eddie's moves. According to Eddie, Derringer would go onstage and replicate his solos note for note, saying, “Rick Derringer opened for us last year, and he did my exact solo. The next night, he does my solo again and ends the set with ‘You Really Got Me,' just like we do. So I told him, ‘If you keep that up, you're not opening for us anymore.' And I kicked him off the tour.” Even Eddie knew the game. When Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi noted that the band had borrowed some of Sabbath's licks, making their music sound even darker and heavier. Derringer copying Eddie's style was a sign of the changing times. Guitarists who clung to traditional blues riffs were being left behind, while Eddie Van Halen had set a new standard, pushing the guitar to uncharted territories. If players didn't adapt, they risked fading into obscurity. “Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. Step into the world of rock and roll legends as we delve deep into the history, music, and trivia surrounding one of the most iconic bands of all time. Join us as we explore Van Halen's storied career, from their electrifying performances to the making of their timeless hits. Born in New York City and raised in the Caribbean as Richard Gerstein - Richard T. Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of acclaimed solo albums and collaborations with a number of influential icons, including Al Kooper, Stephen Stills, former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli, Kiss, Pat Benatar and many more. He has shared stages with artists such as Dave Mason, Mick Fleetwood, the Doobie Brothers, Richie Havens and Odetta. T. Bear penned "Love and Pain," a track found on Take Me Home, one of Cher's most successful albums and also tallied several hits on his own, including the single "Sunshine Hotel" from his debut album Red, Hot and Blue. He has appeared on a number of recordings including CSN's Southern Cross, Billy Squier's Tale of the Tape and The Blues Brothers Soundtrack album. After taking some time to focus on his own sobriety, T. Bear became an early activist helping others with addiction. His self-imposed hiatus lasted nearly three decades, and now T Bear is back with two striking new releases, Fresh Bear Tracks and The Way of the World, his first studio albums in 25+ years. Richard is a distinctive singer and talented keyboard player. His latest albums feature a host of special guests. From Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, to former Paul McCartney & Wings members Laurence Juber and Denny Seiwell and The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench. His latest album, The Way of The World, was written and recorded as the world emerged from the pandemic. It boasts a stunning set of 13 original songs. Musically, it's a stirring melodic mix of blues, rock n roll, Americana, and roots. T. Bear's first album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to #4 on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. Richard has appeared on numerous recordings by iconic artists including Crosby, Stills and Nash's Southern Cross, The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss' solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau's hit single My Angel Baby. As a soloist T Bear found his initial inspiration in the sounds of the British Invasion. At age 13 he was writing his own songs. An early break came when he was working at Manny's Music in New York City when Hot Tuna's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady stopped in and hear him improvising on piano. They were impressed enough to ask him to sit in with them during a Hot Tuna show at the famed Fillmore East. He worked for a time as Carly Simon's road manager and opened shows for the likes of Jeff Beck and Richie Havens before moving to Los Angeles. In 1983, he took a lengthy hiatus from making music to get his personal life in order before returning to action in 2017. Fast forward to the present and T Bear is so excited about the new album. As he puts it, “Making The Way of the World was like getting a new pair of glasses. I see everything more clearly and in focus around me. These are songs that made me think and dream. It's an oasis for the mind.” Meet Richard T Bear this week as he unravels his incredible story of survival and comeback against all odds. I hope you really enjoy this episode.

Send us a Text Message. The Voice Of Autograph, Steve Plunkett Talks New Long Awaited Second Solo Album,"Straight Up"#singersongwriter #autograph #steveplunkett #newalbum #straightup The year was 1984, the year of the cassette boombox and the Sony Walkman, and the year when a little band from Los Angeles invited the world to “Turn Up The Radio.” That band was Autograph, fronted by the fiery-haired powerhouse vocalist Steve Plunkett, and their single became an immediate smash hit from the debut album Sign In Please and was featured in numerous films and TV shows of that era.But as big as Autograph was, it could not contain the creative energy of Plunkett. He soon found a new career as an in-demand songwriter for bands such as The Go-Go's, Edgar Winter and Vixen as well as doing production work for Cyndi Lauper and Graham Nash. He released his first solo album in 1991, an album that showed Plunkett's growing confidence in both his own songwriting and studio techniques. Now, more than 3 decades later, Plunkett is ready to release his second solo album, a smokin' hot collection called Straight Up.This 10-track all-killer, no-filler album cranks up the volume knob to 11 and shows that Plunkett hasn't lost an ounce of the passion and power that made him a hard rock hero! Just check out the album's first single, “Rock Machine,” which kicks off with a driving guitar lick and chanted lyric that lunges straight at the listener's jugular. Mark Bram, AKA Ruby Topaz, has a myriad of musical influences that bleed into his sound, but what sets him apart as a musician is the ability to take these styles and morph them into something entirely unique.“I think it's the mixture of music, because it is so diverse,” Bram said. “When you take the Beatles, the Monkees, Herman's Hermits, the Turtles, and you mix it with bands like King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Edgar Winter. It's just so diverse.”Ruby Topaz has just released an album titled Mark Bram/Ruby Topaz Again, which is a 23rd anniversary remaster of a record that will blow the listeners' hair back. “I love recording and I feel like I am painting pictures of sound, and the equipment and the music we do, is the pallet,” he said. He is also very fond of the improvisational instrumental Fusion/Progressive songs that they do live, noting: “These songs exist for the moment, and they're just on fire. It's like meditation while you're playing, just in the zone, and I love that stuff.Support the Show.

Texas Scratch is made up of three born-and-bred Texas guitarists – Jim Suhler from Dallas, Buddy Whittington from Fort Worth and Vince Converse from Houston. This mighty threesome of big dog guitar slingers takes no prisoners when it comes to red-hot guitar performances, both live and in-studio.This trio of six-string guitar beasts are accompanied on the album by drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Nathaniel Peterson, both fine musicians in their own right. The band's name derives from the term Texas scratch, which is a style of guitar picking (also known as the Carter Scratch) said to have originated by Mother Maybelle Carter back in 1927.Their combined efforts have resulted in a debut album consisting of – obviously - fiery, passionate guitar licks everywhere you turn, soaked in the blues and kicked in the ass by the blues-rock they all love to play. Some of the song titles on the album alone lets the listener know what they are in for – What the Devil Loves, Trip Hammer, Showdown and Louisiana Cock Fight – give a few clues as to what to expect musically. But the album is far from just a six-string shootout or shredding contest between top gun guitarists; the nine total songs on the album feature seven original songs written by a combination of Suhler, Whittington and Converse with killer arrangements, passionate vocals, tight ensemble playing, and clever lyrics. One can hear the mutual sense of love and joy for the music in the band's playing and singing together. But, given the level of talent in this band, none of the musical goodness that flows from this album should come as any surprise.Suhler's and Simon's day jobs are longtime members of George Thorogood and the Destroyers…in fact, Simon is an original member of The Destroyers (he co-founded the band with Thorogood in 1973) and Suhler has been a Destroyer since 1999. Suhler is also a founding member of the band Monkey Beat since 1991.Whittington recorded and toured with blues legend John Mayall for 15 years before heading off to an acclaimed solo recording and touring career in 2008 that continues to this day. Converse made his bones with heavy blues-rock power trio Sunset Heights, touring with acts like Johnny Winter, Peter Green, Fats Domino, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. A devoted blues musician, he now kicks ass with his band, Vince Converse and Big Brother. And Nathaniel Peterson shone brightly as a member of Savoy Brown. For one reason or another through the years -- be it music industry woes, conflicting gigs, budget issues, and most recently, the pandemic -- this hot blues album never got its release. That didn't stop the stories from spreading throughout the music world about what a tremendous album this was. We're thrilled to be the label that finally releases this legendary album,” says Quarto Valley Records President & CEO Bruce Quarto. “Texas plays such an integral role in the history of blues music. So many great blues musicians hail from the Lonestar State - Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, T Bone Walker, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Stevie Rae Vaughn and Billy Gibbons -- just to name a few. It's only fitting that these three stellar blues shredders, Jim, Buddy and Vince, while a part of that history in their own right, join the list as Texas Scratch!” I'd Rather be Lucky Than Good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIASP8HwN_0 Ain't Got the Scratch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMDB8k14jhs Learn more about your ad choices. Ringo Starr, Rod Argent, Sheila E, Billy Squier, Edgar Winter, Hamish Stuart. On July 16, 2006 Ringo and the All-Starrs joined the High Rollers at the Mohegan Sun, transforming another Sunday night at the tables into a bit of rock and roll history. Martin Quibell joins the co-host roster officially, and we talk about this tour, the assembled talent, and eighties MTV pretty boys.
Montrose was considered to be America's answer to Led Zeppelin in the early 70's. Founder Ronnie Montrose had played with a number of musicians including Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, and with Edgar Winter on the hit singles “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride.” He formed the band bearing his name with bassist/keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald, drummer Denny Carmassi, and front man Sammy Hagar. Paper Money is the group's second album, and was the band's highest-charting release, reaching number 65 on the Billboard 200 chart. This follow-up to their self-titled debut album took on a broader style, with a stronger range of rhythm and dynamics while downplaying the heavy metal feel of the first album. Ronnie Montrose thought that the heavier music was a passing thing. However Montrose was just ahead of its time, and heavy metal was about to explode. Ronnie Montrose had a strict no-drug use policy for concerts, as he wanted all the members to be in top shape on their instruments and vocals for the show. The sessions for Paper Money were often marred by the deteriorating relationship between Montrose and Hagar. Soon after this album release, Sammy Hagar would leave the band for a solo career and eventual duties as the front man for Van Halen. Fitzgerald would go on to play for Night Ranger, and as an offstage keyboard player for Van Halen in the 90's. Carmassi would play for a number of artists including Heart, Whitesnake, Al Stewart, Kim Carnes, and Joe Walsh, as well as his own solo work, placing him on more recorded albums than Sammy Hagar.Wayne features this rocking album for today's podcast. StarlinerWe start this podcast with an instrumental with a space theme — prior to Star Wars. This song is the final track for side 1 of the album. Spaceage SacrificeAnother space themed song, this one was written by Hagar and Montrose. Although considered “sci-fi rock,” the song itself is a bit critical of the effort and money spent to go to the moon when troubles remained unsolved on Earth. "Don't think twice spaceage sacrifice. Well, let's go back when it all was starting. A man on the moon and people were starving."Paper Money This track is a critique of the monetary system in a time of inflation. “Take away all my silver, take away my gold, and hand me a stack of paper, paper money don't hold.” This one is the first single from the album, and the concluding track.I've Got the FireWayne saves his favorite track for last. It is a hard-driving song with explosive energy. This one may benefit from the concealed tension between Montrose's edgy tone and Hagar's vocal virtuosity. It would be the last one the band recorded before Hagar left the band to pursue a solo career. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Puttin' On the Ritz by (from the motion picture “Young Frankenstein”)Mel Brooks' black and white comedy classic featured Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced FRAHNK-en-steen) and the monster in Broadway-styled number. STAFF PICKS:You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman Turner OverdriveRob get's the staff picks rolling with a Canadian band's number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was intended as a joke for Randy Bachman's brother Gary, who had a stutter. It was used as a “work track” to set up the mics and amps in the studio, but it wound up being a hit after it was included on their “Not Fragile” album.Killer Queen by QueenBruce's staff pick is the first U.S. hit from Queen. It went to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is off their third album “Sheer Heart Attack.” It is the first Queen song to incorporate the cabaret-style and harmonies that we know today as the quintessentially Queen sound. The lyrics are about a high class call girl.Longfellow Serenade by Neil Diamond Lynch brings us a song inspired by an incident in school where Diamond used the poetry of Henry W. Longfellow to woo a girl. It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Adult Contemporary charts. It is off Diamond's ninth studio album, "Serenade."I've Got the Music In Me by Kiki Dee and the Kiki Dee BandWayne wraps up the staff picks on a positive note. The lyrics describe how the singer will not be deterred because they have the music in them. Kiki Dee is best known in the U.S. for her duet with Elton John, but is better known in England as a singer of "blue eyed soul." She was the first white British artist to be signed by Motown. NOVELTY TRACK:Kung Fu Fighting by Carl DouglasInterest in martial arts in the early 70's inspired this song which would go to number 1 on the US, UK, Canadian, and Australian charts.
