Meghan Weinman joined Carrix and SSA Marine in 2024 as Vice President of Sustainability. She is an industry leader across the sustainability, transportation, and environment sectors and has worked throughout North America and internationally, including Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.  Prior to joining Carrix and SSA Marine, Ms. Weinman was a Managing Director at Edison Energy, leading the Transportation Electrification and Clean Energy Practice. She has also served in roles in management, engineering, and consulting across sustainability and built infrastructure. Ms. Weinman has served as a mentor for the Clean Tech Alliance, an industry advisor at Kellogg School of Management, and is also a frequent speaker on topics relating to sustainability, transportation, clean energy transition, climate, and women in leadership. Meghan Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The scope of sustainability at SSA Marine and 2030 targets Decarbonization strategies including renewable energy sourcing Renewable diesel and hydrogen fuel options Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Meghan's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give to other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Taking on different roles that strengthen understanding of the overall business is always something that would benefit sustainability. I started out in engineering, I went to business school, I'm now in my role today. That has been hugely helpful to understand different parts and wearing different hats and really being able to think cross functionally. With that, networking with other professionals not only in your industry, but adjacent industries. I always learn things when I talk to others in their roles. I had lunch with one of my colleagues who's at Alaska Airlines and we got to swap stories about how they're handling waste management. That was really helpful. Lastly, being a collaborative partner and really looking at how you can solve problems for stakeholders internally always is a way that can benefit not only sustainability, but the business overall.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  I'll go back to the answer that I gave around doing things that are really good for the business, but that can be sustainability initiatives. I get really excited about doing things that can be mutual wins across an organization. I've been working in electric vehicles now for almost 10 years through a couple of different roles, and there's been so much progress that's been made in terms of technological advancement. The commitment from automakers and equipment makers and increasingly the technology is becoming more and more of a mainstay, and that makes it easier and easier to incorporate into operations. It also brings about cost parity. Those are the things that I'm really getting excited about because it really is at a tipping point.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read?  I'll give one book in two different categories. One that jump started my interest in sustainability over 20 years ago, and I'm sure this is probably known to most readers, was Natural Capitalism. That really helped me think about sustainability in a different way and really put into perspective the work that we're doing. But more recently I'm enjoying books that are at the intersection of business and can really help in a sustainability role, and so they're actually negotiation books, and you might wonder why negotiation. It's about coming up with solutions that may benefit many stakeholders across an organization and finding solutions that benefit potentially both sides. If you're thinking about how to convince your CFO or your commercial team, really think about it from a perspective of: how do I get what I want in sustainability, and also the finance team gets what they want. I'm going to give two books here, but one of them is Negotiate Without Fear by Victoria Medvec, and the other one is Getting to Yes, which is a classic by Roger Fisher and William Ury. Those are two that I would recommend any sustainability professional think about in terms of their own organization.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  I really do like getting newsletters. I love reading and finding out what's happening across the industry. A couple that I like is ESG Dive from Industry Dive. That one I find to be really great information about what's happening across different companies, a blend of news and initiatives. I also really like Fortune's newsletters. Fortune has a number of newsletters, but one that has a lot of sustainability topics in there is the Trust Factor. They talk a lot about how sustainability and ESG is really paramount to businesses. But they also have other great newsletters too, like CEO Daily and CFO Daily, and they dabble into sustainability in those newsletters, too.  Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at SSA Marine?  You can connect with me on my LinkedIn, Megan Weinman. You can also go to SSA Marine's LinkedIn page or visit our website, ssamarine.com to learn more about our work. Our sustainability report is on there. You can read more stories about things that we've been doing across the company, and our 2024 report will be in there too later on in 2025.

Chapter 1:Summary of Getting To Yes"Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In," written by Roger Fisher, William Ury, and Bruce Patton, is a seminal book on negotiation strategy that advocates for principled negotiation. The book emphasizes the importance of finding mutual gains and collaborative solutions, rather than engaging in adversarial bargaining. Key Concepts:1. Principled Negotiation: The authors propose a method of negotiation that focuses on interests rather than positions. This means negotiators should seek to understand and address the underlying interests of both parties.2. Four Fundamental Principles:- Separate the People from the Problem: Negotiators should maintain a good relationship while addressing the substantive issues at hand.- Focus on Interests, Not Positions: Instead of taking fixed positions, negotiators should explore the interests behind those positions to find common ground.- Generate Options for Mutual Gain: Creativity in brainstorming potential solutions can lead to agreements that benefit both parties.- Use Objective Criteria: Decisions should be based on objective standards, such as laws, precedents, or expert opinions, rather than the will of either party.3. BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement): The book stresses the importance of knowing your best alternative if negotiations fail. This awareness empowers negotiators and helps them avoid agreeing to unfavorable terms.4. Communication: Effective communication is critical in negotiations. The authors advocate active listening and clear expression of interests to foster understanding.5. Emotional Intelligence: Recognizing emotions—both your own and those of the other party—can lead to more effective negotiation outcomes. Conclusion:"Getting to Yes" is a guide for those looking to negotiate effectively and fairly, promoting a win-win approach that can lead to sustainable and amicable agreements. The principles outlined have been widely embraced in various fields, including business, mediation, and conflict resolution.Chapter 2:The Theme of Getting To Yes"Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In" is a seminal work in the field of negotiation, co-authored by Roger Fisher, William Ury, and Bruce Patton. The book outlines a principled approach to negotiation that emphasizes collaboration and mutual benefit rather than adversarial tactics. Here are some key plot points (ideas), character development (the roles of negotiators), and thematic concepts presented in the book: Key Plot Points (Ideas):1. Principled Negotiation: The authors advocate for a method of negotiation that focuses on interests rather than positions. This approach encourages parties to explore their underlying needs and desires, leading to more sustainable agreements.2. Four Pillars of Principled Negotiation:- People: Separate the people from the problem. This point emphasizes the importance of maintaining good relationships and not letting personal issues interfere with the negotiation process.- Interests: Focus on interests, not positions. Negotiators should identify what each party truly wants instead of just defending their initial stance.- Options: Generate a variety of possibilities before deciding on an agreement. Collaboration can lead to creative solutions that satisfy both sides.- Criteria: Use objective criteria to evaluate options. This helps prevent negotiations from becoming power struggles and ensures that agreements are based on fair standards.3. BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement): Understanding and developing one's BATNA is crucial. This concept emphasizes that knowing the alternatives to a negotiated agreement empowers negotiators to pursue better outcomes and avoid unfavorable deals.4.

William Ury is one of the world's most influential peacebuilders and experts on negotiation. He advised Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos in the lead up to that country's historic 2016 peace agreement with the FARC, and played a key role in de-escalating nuclear tensions between the U.S. and North Korea in 2017. Getting to Yes, which Ury co-wrote with Roger Fisher back in 1981, is the world's best selling book on negotiation. Ury co-founded the Program on Negotiation at Harvard, as well as the Abraham Path Initiative, an NGO that builds walking trails connecting communities in the Middle East. His new book is called Possible: How we Survive - and Thrive - in an Age of Conflict. It's filled with incredible stories from Bill's career. In this episode, Bill talks about how lessons from the failures and success of the past – in places like Northern Ireland, Colombia, and the Middle East – can be instructive when dealing with the conflicts of today.  He shares exciting ideas about how journalists can tell stories about peace. What's more, his insights on managing conflict can be applied anywhere from the UN to the boardroom to your own family. William Ury's ideas aren't easy to implement –  in fact they're incredibly challenging. Ury says conflicts don't end, but they can be transformed, from fighting with weapons to hashing differences out in a democratic process. And if Northern Ireland, South Africa, and Colombia – places where people said violent conflict would go on forever – could transform their conflicts, then there's hope for the seemingly “impossible” conflicts of today. Music in this episode by Joel Cummins, Podington Bear, Kevin MacLeod, Meavy Boy, and Faszo. I began my life's work in two communities on opposite sides of Boston, one predominantly Black, the other predominantly White, both made up of hard-working, low-income families. For twelve years, I worked alternately as a community organizer, a journalist, and a counselor alongside people struggling to navigate circumstances largely stacked against them. Where they went, I went—to their homes, theirschools, the streets, the courts, even prison. The experience was a master class in hard-earned resilience on the one hand and learned helplessness on the other. That experience eventually led me to return to school to figure out how to inspire and empower people to create systems that work for them, not against them. As an undergraduate at Boston University and as a doctoral student at Harvard, I had the privilege of learning from and working alongside some of the world's best thinkers on how to navigate conflict and effect change in all kinds of systems from families(David Kantor) to organizations (Chris Argyris, Donald Schön, Ed Schein, Peter Senge) to nations (Howard Zinn, Roger Fisher). For the past 40 years, I have led long-term change efforts in some of America's most iconic businesses and cutting-edge nonprofits. Along the way, I discovered that it is possible to turn intergroup conflict into a powerful force for constructive change. Out of this fundamental insight, I developed an approach to conflict and change called Leading Through Relationships (LTR)TM with frameworks and tools captured in my own and others publications and used around the world by my colleagues and students. In addition to dozens of articles, I am the author of Divide Or Conquer, The Elephant in the Room, and Remaking the Space Between Us, and the co-author of Action Science with Chris Argyris and Robert Putnam. As a partner at the Monitor Group, I chaired Monitor University, and as chief executive partner at New Profit, I led a culture change effort that readied the firm for future growth.I share my life with negotiation expert and Getting to Yes co-author Bruce Patton, my husband of 30 years, a rambunctious border collie rescue, and a junkyard mutt.

Show Notes: Title: Media Entrepreneur and Filmmaker   Show notes: Natalia Tsarkova, a transfer student from Latvia, was the first student from the former Soviet bloc to apply to an American college. She was thrown into a completely different world and roles, but knew she wanted to create more contexts for others to transform their lives like she didher life. Growing up in Latvia, she watched pirated MTV videos and credits seeing Billy Jean for the first time for inspiring her to work in the media space. In 1993, she met a professor at the MIT Media Lab, who recognized her mixed background of mathematics, social studies, and filmmaking. She fell into the master's program at the MIT Media Lab, where she was educated on the new way of thinking about media and how to create more meaningful experiences through on-demand interactive media platforms.   Working in Video on Demand and Interactive Experiences Natalia was eager to move to New York City and found a job with a startup in Soho. She was driven to explore the world of startups and entrepreneurs, which she didn't know much about before. She created projects Barry Diller, Sony Music and was hired by the Beatles estate to create the first Beatles digital experience. She had the luxury of diving deep into the Beatles archives and creating unique digital content. Natalia worked with IMG, fashion, and sports, and was tasked with explaining the digital transformation to CEOs in management, helping them imagine new types of media experiences that were digital and on demand. Her journey from MIT to New York City was filled with excitement, partying, and meeting people from all walks of life. She was able to stay afloat as a consultant, working on projects that fascinated her and helped shape the future of digital media.  The Development of Transmedia  In 2001, Natalia met her husband, a French television music television producer, who was looking for a digital media expert. In 2003, they set up the first European video on demand platform, called Transmedia.  Natalia convinced television producers that linear television was dead and that video on demand was the future. They built a business by packaging content from France television and other European producers and selling it to telcos in Belgium, Switzerland, and even France. With their large library of live musical content, they launched a video on demand platform called iConcerts, similar to Netflix but with only live music. This platform evolved into a hybrid high-definition TV/Video on Demand channel, licensed by operators in 128 countries between 2007 and 2010. The platform was successful, with collaborations with CCTV, an office in Singapore, Paris and Tokyo and partnerships with Senegalese musicians and Africa. Natalia explains how she became disillusioned a few years before it was sold.     Making a TV Documentary  Ever since Harvard, Natalia always did some form of documentary filmmaking. During summers, she rented a house in France and started filming the Gypsy Kings, a group that were popular in the 90s. Natalia showed the excerpts to a head of a European arts channel called Arte, who suggested she submit a the proposal for a full length film. The film was released in 2016 and received triple primetime ratings on the channel, and the Gypsy Kings loved it. This experience of original content storytelling and the idea of tribes, such as the Gypsy tribe, inspired her. She moved on to create a project called Tribo, designed to be a storytelling platform for groups to share their stories. Tribo has become more about digital storytelling and dynamic storytelling.  The Evolution of the Tribo Platform  Natalia discusses the concept of Tribo as a media platform for storytelling. Tribo was initially designed as an extension of live music festivals, but after two years of testing, it has been found to be particularly effective in private communities during COVID-19. Tribo aims to create a platform where stories that matter over time are told, such as collective storytelling. This can involve recording portraits of different people who are part of the organization, allowing everyone to post photos and videos during an event, and giving CEOs a space to motivate everyone. Natalia emphasizes the importance of engagement from employees, as most companies struggle with sharing their stories due to busy work and reluctance to share. By providing equal opportunities for sharing and having leaders interviewing people, Tribo can capture the heritage and legacy of the community.  Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Natalia was particularly fond of the VES department, where she watched two movies a day, and had a close friendship with Robert Gardner, Director of the Film Study Center and Svetlana Boym, an expert on Soviet art and modern art. She mentions Liah Greenfield, her thesis advisor. She also worked for the Harvard Negotiation Project, created by Roger Fisher, a professor at HLS known as the ultimate expert on negotiation.. Her first job at Harvard was working at the Russian research center, where she was hired by Marshall Goldman, a big Soviet studies professor.   Timestamps: 05:12 How a Latvian student applied to Harvard despite obstacles 11:30 Moving to NYC, starting a business, and networking 14:00 Digital media, video on demand, and startup experience 21:03 Entrepreneurship, media, and filmmaking 24:15 Filmmaking, loss, and entrepreneurship 31:27 Using tech for collective storytelling in organizations 41:17 Grief, trauma, and resilience after loss 44:42 Filmmaking, Harvard experiences, and connections Links: LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalia-tsarkova  Website: Tribo.Live Kings of the World: https://vimeo.com/197952008/d444b20c11 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nataliatsar/

What shall we talk about this week? Probably not really about this comic book. How about we talk about a specific organ that is explicitly talked about in this issue? Yes, I am talking about hair.....wait....no....that is not right......I am talking about the heart. But what heart are we talking about?  First of all, I will go ahead and give all credit to Wikipedia for what you are about to read. I am not that original. And I really do not want to be that creative. I think this is just more fun. Heart is an American rock band formed in 1973 in Seattle, Washington. The band evolved from previous projects led by founding members Roger Fisher (guitar) and Steve Fossen (bass guitar), including The Army (1967–1969), Hocus Pocus (1969–1970), and White Heart (1970–1973). Heart is a framework developed by Google to help the products and development teams to make decisions that serve business and user-centered. Heart is a framework for mobile design and metrics. It is an acronym that stands for happiness, engagement, adoption, retention and task success. Included by Gartner as a design approach that accommodates mobile interface issues such as partial user attention and interruption. Heart is a 1987 American sports drama film directed by James Lemmo (in his directorial debut), from a screenplay by Lemmo and Randy Jurgensen, who also produced the film. It stars Brad Davis, Jesse Doran, Steve Buscemi, Frank Adu, Sam Gray, Billy Costello, and Frances Fisher. A punch-drunk boxer is set up as an easy win for an up-and-coming young boxer in this melodrama. The highlight of the film is the performance of Steve Buscemi as the oily, mob-connected fight promoter Nicky. Eddie (Brad Davis) is the addle-brained boxer Nicky hangs out to dry for quick money. Heart of Midlothian Football Club, commonly known as Hearts, is a professional football club in Edinburgh, Scotland. The team competes in the Scottish Premiership, the top division of Scottish football. Hearts, the oldest and most successful football club in the Scottish capital, was formed in 1874, its name influenced by Walter Scott's novel The Heart of Midlothian. The club crest is based on the Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the city's Royal Mile; the team's colors are maroon and white. The Heart Nebula (also known as the Running dog nebula, IC 1805, Sharpless 2-190) is an emission nebula, 7500 light years away from Earth and located in the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. It was discovered by William Herschel on 3 November 1787. It displays glowing ionized hydrogen gas and darker dust lanes. "Heart" is a song by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys from their second studio album, Actually (1987). It was released as the album's fourth and final single on 21 March 1988 by Parlophone. The song topped the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in April 1988, becoming the duo's fourth and final chart-topper to date in the United Kingdom. Its music video was directed by Jack Bond and filmed in Yugoslavia. The group had initially written the song for Madonna, though they never asked her to record it, instead keeping it for themselves. Heart Peaks, originally known as the Heart Mountains, is a mountain massif in the Northern Interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is 90 km (56 mi) northwest of the small community of Telegraph Creek and just southwest of Callison Ranch. With a maximum elevation of 2,012 m (6,601 ft), it rises above the surrounding landscape on the Nahlin Plateau, which is part of the western Stikine Plateau. Heart Peaks has been an area of prospecting since the 1980s with the discovery of precious metals. The Heart is a 2014 realistic and medical fiction novel by the French author Maylis de Kerangal. It chronicles the events immediately following the death of 19-year-old Simon Limbres in a car accident. In particular, The Heart focuses on the transplantation of Simon's heart and how it affects those involved in the process, including Simon's parents, the physicians, the nurses, the organ transplant coordinators, the recipient, and the recipient's family, over the course of twenty-four hours.   Check out the pictures from this issue:  https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2024/04/18/avengers-academy-33-what-the-heart-wants-part-2/   We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. The global pandemic threw a huge curveball at most businesses. Face-to-face interactions became a thing of the past, and consultancies offering in-person services found themselves struggling to adapt. But for Total Negotiation Group (TNG), strong leadership and a willingness to diversify helped turn the global crisis into a huge opportunity. In the latest episode of Climb In Consulting, Nick caught up with Mark Grice, Co-founder of Total Negotiation Group (TNG), a successful global consultancy that helps its clients to build more sustainable and valuable commercial partnerships. Nick and Mark explore how a clever pandemic pivot, along with a strong focus on asking the right questions, not only ensured the firm's survival, but actually fueled phenomenal growth, helping them accelerate from £5m to £10m revenue during that time. They also dive into a huge number of topics, including: - The fascinating career journey that's taken Mark from accounting to negotiating, via global stints at Guinness and Disney. - Why commercial negotiation has little in common with talking down hostages - despite what the movies would have you believe! - How TNG knew the time was right for them to expand into Australia – even though they were only in their second year of business. - Why finding the right business partner offers far more benefits than simply having two heads rather than one. - Why asking the right questions – and really listening to the answers – is the one crucial skill all business owners need to learn. …and much more besides! Harvard negotiator explains how to argue | Dan Shapiro

Dan Shapiro, the head of Harvard's International Negotiation program, shares 3 keys to a better argument. Americans are increasingly falling into the “tribal trap,” according to Dan Shapiro, author of “Negotiating the Nonnegotiable: How to Resolve Your Most Emotionally Charged Conflicts.” The tribal trap often centers on politics. Those ensnared in it will do anything they can to shut down the other side in an effort to prove that their side is right, just, and the only way forward. But from abortion to immigration, the problem is often not what we're arguing about, it's how. So, how can we have more productive conversations? In this Big Think interview, Shapiro uses his negotiating expertise to outline several strategies to escape the tribal trap and communicate effectively, including understanding the core values of the other side, listening intently to what they're saying, conveying that you understand what they're saying, and finding common ground. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Dan Shapiro: The founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program, Daniel Shapiro teaches a highly evaluated course on negotiation at Harvard College; instructs psychology interns at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital; and leads executive education sessions at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital. He also has served on the faculty at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and at the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is author of Negotiating the Nonnegotiable, which Matthew Bishop of the Economist Group called “quite simply, the best book I have ever read on negotiating in situations of extreme conflict.” He also is coauthor with Roger Fisher of the negotiation classic “Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------ About Big Think | Smarter Faster™ ► Big Think The leading source of expert-driven, educational content. Please note that this episode was recorded during the first months of the war in Ukraine, and William and Thomas' commentary is relevant to that time. Since then, circumstances may have changed. Humiliation is reflected in most major historical events, especially in wars. Throughout the centuries, humans continue to be stuck in the same pattern of humiliation. And it has become even more significant in the present. With COVID-19 bringing a sense of interconnectedness and the whole world tuning in to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, author and anthropologist William Ury dissects the root cause of this cycle. He explains that empathy is our most powerful tool in negotiation, as it enables us to understand our "opponents" and communicate with them effectively. *Please note that this episode was recorded during the first months of the war in Ukraine, and William and Thomas' commentary is relevant to that time. Since then, circumstances may have changed.* Key points include: ✔️ How doing our inner work helps us to act more effectively toward the betterment of the collective ✔️ Using strategic empathy to better understand an “opponent” and find a constructive way out of conflict ✔️ How both COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine galvanized the world and made us aware of our interconnectedness ✔️ Fear and crises tune our collective instrument, and we can use them as an opportunity for positive transformation ✔️ Being a “possible-ist” - someone who can see both negative and positive possibilities and potentials, and can act accordingly to move situations in a positive direction --------------- William Ury is one of the world's leading experts on negotiation and mediation. As the co-founder of the Program on Negotiation, he is a driving force behind many new negotiation theories and practices. Ury is the co-author with Roger Fisher and Bruce Patton of Getting to Yes, a 15-million-copy bestseller translated into more than 35 languages, and the author of several other books including the award-winning Getting to Yes with Yourself. Over the last four decades, Ury has served as a negotiation advisor and mediator in conflicts ranging from the Cold War to ethnic and civil wars in the Middle East, Chechnya, Yugoslavia, and most recently in Colombia, where he serves as a senior advisor to President Juan Manuel Santos. In addition to teaching negotiation and mediation to tens of thousands of executives, Ury is the founder of the Abraham Path Initiative, which seeks to bring people together across cultures by opening a long-distance walking route in the Middle East that retraces the footsteps of Abraham and his family. In recognition of his work, he has received the Cloke-Millen Peacemaker Award, the Whitney North Seymour Award from the American Arbitration Association, and the Distinguished Service Medal from the Russian Parliament. --------------- Thomas Hübl is a renowned teacher, author, and international facilitator whose lifelong work integrates the core insights of the great wisdom traditions and mysticism with the discoveries of science. Since 2004, he has taught and facilitated programs with more than 100,000 people worldwide, including online courses which he began offering in 2008. Overcoming fear and imposter syndrome can be a significant hurdle to success in any field, including real estate investing. Sometimes, fear can be overwhelming that people are rendered powerless to think, act, and make decisions. So, what will it take to conquer fear, take the first step, and launch your journey to real estate investing success?    In this episode, we chat with Andrew Schutsky of Redline Equity LLC about his journey in real estate investing. Now a thriving investor with 2,000 units under management, he is the first to admit that achieving this level of investing success while running an IT organization for a billion-dollar company, was unimaginable when he started house hacking. Rising above his fears and crushing imposter syndrome, Andrew took action,  faced the challenges and grew his investments over time. His journey is full of valuable lessons and tips to help you take your real estate investments to the next level. Don't miss out on this empowering episode!    Key Points from This Episode: Andrew talks about his background and upbringing and how he got into the real estate business. Andrew details the series of steps that he took to get into real estate investing. Why was it crucial for Andrew to be in the shoes of a passive investor and see syndication through the eyes of one? What did Andrew learn from his first experience as a limited partner or passive investor? What lessons from Andrew's initial venture into real estate investing stood out for him? How have resourcefulness and creativity helped Andrew find solutions to problems as a general partner in syndication? What advice would Andrew give about finding and selecting a partner for multifamily syndication? Andrew talks about Redline Equity's current market focus and strategy for growth.  How did Andrew leverage his information technology (IT) skill set and background experience to grow as an investor? What technology tools (software, platforms) does Andrew's company uses to manage their business and why do they put a premium on the simplicity of use? How does Andrew strike a balance between his personal and professional/business life? What mindset and perspective does Andrew keep to scale in real estate and achieve success? How did Andrew overcome his fear and the imposter syndrome that afflicted him when he started in the RE business? Andrew answers the Rare Air Questionnaire.   Tweetables: “A lot of people think they don't have much to offer. But I'm here to tell you that you have more than you think. If you really sit down and inventory and actually start talking to operators where they have gaps or things that they don't like doing that you may be really good at.”   “What's the simplest way to get something done? I love simplicity and that's what I look for in systems and processes.”    “It's really being thoughtful about where you spend your time, recognizing when you've hit your limits, and pulling back at that point. "The single biggest block to getting a yes in any kind of conflict is yourself,” says author and expert negotiator William Ury. In this episode, William Ury shares his expertise in demonstrating spaciousness and empathy in conflict-laden situations, mediation as an intrapersonal exercise, and dissecting trauma in an unsettled society. ▶️ Practicing Spaciousness and Empathy for Conflict Mediation with William Ury Key Points to Discover:  ✔️ Practice the palm pinching technique. Standing in the middle of conflict can be terrifying. Step back and find perspective within by pinching your palm. “It gives you momentary pain, but it'll keep you alert,” William Ury retells. ✔️Befriend your emotions. Trauma brings about emotions we perceive as negative – such as anger, resentment, jealousy, hatred, and fear. William Ury says, “Befriend these emotions. Welcome them. Don't judge them. Host them. Don't suppress them.” Every emotion contains a message. If we're open and paying attention, we can better understand it. ✔️ Conflicts have three sides. The third side is called the whole – the larger community to which the two parties belong. “It's not a conflict between individual A and individual B. It's a collective,” he explains. This unseen side holds a huge responsibility to mediate and gather the two parties to reach a resolution. ✔️ Empathy requires putting yourself in your own shoes. It's hard to put yourself in others' shoes when you have preconceived ideas about them. Be in a place of clarity and gather as much information as you can about the conflicts you witness. This is where real and deep empathy begins. ✔️ The absent parts of ourselves are filled with the past. When we aren't fully integrated with the painful experiences of others, it blocks us from developing genuine empathy, and we might instead find that we're filled with fear, physical tension, and numbness. Healing from intergenerational trauma requires us to feel the fears of our ancestors – merging them into our present flow. This allows us to cultivate greater empathy for the people in our lives. ✔️ Mediation means seeing a way forward. Finding the way forward in conflict calls for inner spaciousness. As a mediator, William Ury recommends taking a step back and viewing the situation from what he calls “going to the balcony” - a removed position from which we can be more present, empathetic, and objective. Take off the blinders of your own biases and see the larger picture. --------------- William Ury is one of the world's leading experts on negotiation and mediation. --------------- Sign up for updates by visiting our website pointofrelationpodcast.com. Getting to Yes Full Book ReviewMore Content On Bookey Best App For Book Summary. Negotiation is closely related to our lives. Buyers and sellers bargain over the price of a product. Employees strive for a promotion or a pay raise from the boss. Children debate their parents over what time to go to bed at night. These are all familiar negotiation scenes in our daily lives. Everyone is a negotiator, and those who are better at negotiation meet their needs more efficiently. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In presents the research results of the Harvard Negotiation Project. This book will teach you how to negotiate more efficiently and help you achieve win-win outcomes! Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today, we will unlock the book Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In. Negotiation is closely related to our lives. Every one of us is a negotiator in the sense that we all face various negotiation scenarios every day. Thus, negotiation is an essential skill that we should master. However, negotiation is not simple, and it is often hard to achieve good results. You may have encountered awkward situations like the following: Neither you nor the seller is willing to budge an inch while bargaining. Your boss rejects your request for a promotion or a pay raise. You argue with your colleague over differing proposals. So, is there any negotiation method that defends our interests while also satisfying the other party? Of course, there is! The book Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In proposes the “principled negotiation,” a general strategy that applies to various negotiation situations. This so-called "principle" refers to the inner appeal of interests. The key is to treat your negotiating partner as a collaborator and focus on basic interests. Then, search for solutions that satisfy both parties' common interests based on objective standards to achieve win-win outcomes. This book was published in 2009 and has been a bestseller ever since. It has also been recommended by John Kenneth Galbraith, the advisor to three U.S. presidents, Cyrus Roberts Vance, a former U.S. Secretary of State, and Ayn Rand, a famous writer from the U.S. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In was written by Roger Fisher, William Ury, and Bruce Patton. They are three senior experts from the Harvard Negotiation Project. They are not only researchers but also practitioners in the field of negotiation. They provide professional negotiation consulting services for many individuals, companies, and even government agencies.

From discussing “taking away the keys to the car” for a cognitively impaired older adult to decisions to limit life sustaining treatments at the end of life, conflict and disagreement permeate everything that we do in medicine.  How well though are we taught to handle conflict and disagreement?  I'd say not well as I don't think I've ever received a formal talk on the issue. On today's podcast we take a deep dive into the topic of Negotiation and Dispute Resolution training with Lee Lindquist and Alaine Murawski.   We've had Lee on before to talk about her Plan your Lifespan project.  We invited her back along with Alaine to talk about their work around negotiation training, including their work on NegotiAge, an online, AI based training intervention designed to teach negotiation skills to caregivers.
