Born in Belgium in 1954 to conservative, Catholic parents, Lucy Sante migrated to New York in the 1960s, where she became associated with the Bohemian artistic milieu of the city. After producing several highly acclaimed works of history such as Low Life and The Other Paris and translating Félix Fénéon's feuilletons for NYRB as Novels in Three Lines, she announced in 2021 that she was transitioning: ‘Yes, I've known since at least age 11 but probably earlier and yes, I suppressed and denied it for decades', she wrote at the time. In I Heard Her Call My Name (Hutchinson Heinemann), ‘a generous, fearlessly revealing book' (Samantha Hunt), she describes with great grace, wit and humility her decision to begin living the life she knew was truly hers.Sante is in conversation about her memoir with writer and filmmaker Juliet Jacques. Slushies, get ready for some trailblazing poems in the form of mathematical proofs, theorems, and other types of mathematical reasoning that level their gaze at heartbreak. One poem even embeds a second poem as a footnote. Alex reminds us all of the hermit crab essay/poem format, prompting Sam to recall Maggie Nelson's Bluets, in which the end of a powerful love is likened to the experience of shedding yet still living with an abandoned skin or shell. Come along for a ride with some poetic work that's furious and logical in equal measure! Links to things we discuss that you may dig: Joe Wenderoth's Letters to Wendy's Samantha Hunt's The Seas Maggie Nelson's Bluets This episode is brought to you by our sponsor Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. Socials: Instagram: @reialtaspeak Inflection Point 1b Theorem 1.1. The pain, longing, and ambivalence I feel related to this particular past lover (hereafter “him”, “he” or “you”) is not unhealthy. Proof: By definition, “Time heals all wounds.” Suppose for all purposes, 11 years is considered to be ‘Time'. It is true that 11 years have passed, however I am not healed. Thus, this thing I feel is not really a wound. Theorem 1.2. There exists a value in this lover that I use to cope with a deficiency in my current state of being. Proof: By Theorem 1.1, this lover does not represent some larger, unresolved issue. It is true, however, that I still have been unable to let him go. Therefore, he must be notable for a different reason. By supposition, that different reason is that he and I had an unrivaled connection. I.e. While there is no such thing as soulmates, our cognitive compatibility was substantially higher than that of my previously observed matches. Hence, I feel an intensity through recollecting him such that most other things pale in comparison. Therefore, I remember him in order to feel something when I don't. Theorem 2.1. There exists an absolute truth about why I loved him and why I haven't been able to let go. Proof: By definition, “All things happen for a reason.” Since it is true that loving him and being unable to let go has happened, there must be a reason that caused it. This reason must be the truth. Suppose not; i.e., suppose this reason was not the truth. Then it would not have possessed the power necessary to cause such a consequential thing to happen. Such a consequential thing did happen. Thus, there is an attributable reason that is the truth. Theorem 2.2. I must understand why I have not been able to let go—in order to let go. Proof: By my own definition, I am a finder of truth. By Theorem 2.1, there is a truth to be found. If there is a truth I have not yet found, then I must find it in order to exist since finding truth defines me. Thus, I have no path forward but to find the truth. ____________________________________________________________________________ CAVEAT: Due to the following factors, the validity of the proofs outlined above is questionable: Invalid underlying assumptions Faulty reasoning Insufficient information As a result, extrapolation based on the conclusions laid out in the preceding section is not advised. ----more---- wave height CREST you approached after cycles of fire there was a tectonic shift fueled by molten rock and dressed up decay i believed your promise this time around — i felt it lift my feet TROUGH1 you receded re-defining “forever” as “only thirteen days” (a real trailblazer!) and like eddies forming behind Pinnacle Rock the reverse current dragged me in asymmetric swirls [1] i wish my love became a two-toed sloth like the algae on its fur it ignores his simple existence i wish my love became a deep sea vent spewing sulfur to fill his nostrils and make him gag i wish my love strutted down the cobblestones in heels with a long, deliberate stride and a toss of its hair ----more---- I Outline the Hypotheses I got this This is 101 I simply need to determine what a human woman should feel in this situation based on whether or not I can reject the null: H0 (null) = He's a small person on a power trip Who never cared He wasn't actually sick from bad Indian food Each time I felt we needed to talk H1 = He's not small but broken It was shame that caused him to disappear without warning; I memorialized every scene of his trauma While he forgot my middle name H2 = He's an emotionless sociopath in a decade-long grift Laughing about me with his friends Each month he adds some new mark to his collection One day he'll be caught and I'll guest star in a true crime documentary Yes, all very plausible Now all that's left to detect an effect is to dampen the noise

We were apart again while recording this episode. Emily was in Colorado visiting her son and daughter-in-law. She also shared part of her salad with a magpie at The Bookworm bookstore and cafe in Edward's CO. We are so grateful for the technology that allows us to get together to talk about books from wherever we are. As for what we're reading, Chris is nearing the end of OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon and Emily is reading TAKE WHAT YOU NEED by Idra Novey (release date is 3/14/2023). We both read SWEET THURSDAY by John Steinbeck and also listened to ON WRITING: A MEMOIR OF THE CRAFT by Stephen King. Chris is dipping into the Library of America edition of CONSTANCE FENIMORE WOOLSON: COLLECTED STORIES and Emily read THE SEAS by Samantha Hunt and SHAME by Annie Ernaux. In Biblio Adventures, after we recorded the last episode we realized we forgot to talk about visiting the fantastic Lenox Library in Lenox, MA! Emily attended a virtual event at the San Francisco Public Library in celebration of their One City One Book selection, THIS IS EAR HUSTLE:: Unflinching Stories of Everyday Prison Life; with Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods, moderated by Piper Kerman author of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: My Year in a Women's Prison. Meanwhile, back in Connecticut, Chris returned books to The Institute Library and then took a walk to visit Grey Matter Books and Barnes & Noble. On November 30th we are heading to Amherst, MA for the screening of the pop opera Emily & Sue at Amherst College hosted by the newly renovated Emily Dickinson Museum. We also got tickets for a tour of Dickinson's house earlier in the day – we can't wait to see what's changed since our last visit. Last call to join in on our readalong discussion of MURDER ON THE RED RIVER by Marcie R. Rendon. If you would like to participate in the Zoom conversation on Sunday, December 4th at 7 PM (ET) please email us (bookcougars@gmail.com). We also have a discussion thread on our Goodreads group if you'd like to chat about the book there. AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: We had a blast talking with author, TV writer, and lawyer Marcia Clark and Our Mystery Man, John Valeri. Marcia's new standalone thriller, THE FALL GIRL, is out now! We both enjoyed the audio version.

Co-hosts Wendy Sheridan and Robin Renée begin the show with their check-in and 3 Random Facts about the Atlantic hurricane season, the events in the heptathlon, and how crickets make pretty good thermometers. Sarai Walker ("Dietland") joins us as our second-ever guest to talk about her upcoming release, "The Cherry Robbers," which comes out May 17, and plays on goth themes inspired by the story of Sarah Winchester and Emily Dickinson's creepy poems. Plus, hear thoughts about "The Unwritten Book," by Samantha Hunt, to be released in April, Dan Chaon's "Sleepwalk," which comes out in May, "Murder on Hollywood Beach," released later this month, and a bunch of stuff about the Maine Bookhouse, where Sam found a book from 1939 about Lucky Strike cigarettes, the Newburyport Literary Festival, and much more. Also, Sam accuses Sarai of having a southern accent, but she grew up in California and claims she doesn't have one. You be the judge.

In this episode I get to discuss the beautiful short story called A Love Story by Samantha Hunt with my friend Vera. The story is from Samantha Hunt's collection that came out in 2017 called In the Dark Dark, which she describes in an interview as "a map of humans at night." Preach girl. The story came out in the New Yorker in 2017, and you can listen to the author read the story if you click here. I highly recommend reading or listening to this story before this conversation. It's just such a good story and a quick read or listen. "And as always, Enjoy!" - Chef John from Food Wishes --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/molly-tallon/support

I am a survivor of child abuse, sexual abuse by a family member (at a very young age), and neglect. I was born in Iowa, but moved to Arkansas at 9 years old, in 1992. About 1997 or 1998, I discovered cannabis for the first time. I realized that I was finally able to be calm after years of being prescribed different types of medicines for ADHD that did not work. I was finally able to feel normal. Since cannabis was not yet legal, I struggled through using different narcotics, psychotropic medicines, and prescriptions for my various health issues. This led to suicide attempts throughout my life, including one that led me to being hospitalized. About the same time, cannabis was coming up for a legalization vote in Arkansas. My wife and I decided to explore the use of cannabis once again as part of my medical regime. Of course, that made a big difference. In the past couple years, I have opened up to my wife and we discovered together that cannabis helps my pain and makes me a better father and husband. Creating art became an outlet for my mental health therapy, especially since I struggle with reading and writing, so journaling was not helpful for me. After a few months, I discovered that painting pieces that feature cannabis are the ones that I enjoy creating the most." - Matt Flowers Emily Victoria Smith: @theonemanbandit Emily V. The novel begins with the friendship between two young, Asian American boys in a small, Midwestern town who bond over their outcast status and shared love of comic books. Meanwhile, in an alternate or perhaps future universe, a team of superheroes debates the efficacy of protest and swaps stories of artistic ennui on their lunch breaks. Recalling the work of Tom McCarthy and Valeria Luiselli, Eugene Lim gleefully toys with narrative conventions—blending Hollywood chase scenes with sharp cultural critiques, hard-boiled detective pulps with subversive philosophy. Unfolding like the revelations of a dream, Dear Cyborgs weaves together the story of a friendship’s dissolution with provocative and lively meditations on creativity and political dissent. Praise for Dear Cyborgs “Eugene Lim’s Dear Cyborgs is a mad badass fan letter to comicdom and a chastening reminder of how America’s greatest fantasy doesn’t involve superheroes with superpowers but the prospect of a fair and honest political life. Go read it in the streets.” —Joshua Cohen, author of Book of Numbers “Eugene Lim tells his sly superhero tales in a kind of hard-boiled deadpan—a voice at once incongruously comic and playfully soulful. Beneath the dry wit there’s an ache of loneliness, an echo of every comic-book reader’s yearning for the camaraderie of the super team, the intimate enmity of the nemesis.” —Peter Ho Davies, author of The Fortunes “Eugene Lim’s Dear Cyborgs is a secret tunnel fresh with cool, strange storms. What is it to be super? What is it to be beyond? Dear Cyborgs is ripe with mysteries, heroes, even heartache.” —Samantha Hunt, author of Mr. Splitfoot “[An] entertaining reflection on art, resistance, heroes, and villains . . . [Dear Cyborgs] is eerily reflective of our fractured times, darting from subject to subject with the speed of a mouse click. A colorful meditation on friendship and creation nested within a fictional universe.” —Kirkus Reviews Eugene Lim is the author of two novels, Fog & Car and The Strangers. His writing has appeared in Fence, the Denver Quarterly, Little Star, Dazed, The Brooklyn Rail, and elsewhere. He is the founder and managing editor of Ellipsis Press and works as a librarian in a high school. He lives in Queens, New York. Harold Abramowitz is from Los Angeles. When Samantha Hunt drops by the Damn Library, the guys try to put a shadow in her drink but just end up with something more blood colored. They discuss her story collection, The Dark Dark, the Normas in one's life, and ticks, as well as transcending genre. The story collection she suggested, Chavisa Woods' Things to Do When You're Goth in the Country, also transcends genre, and the trio can't stop deciding on favorite stories. 15 seconds of a song: Say Hi - Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh support the show! patreon.com/smdb book lists/drink recipes at somanydamnbooks.com Learn more about your ad choices. Advice from a psychic led Annie Hartnett to the residency that helped her finish her fantastic novel, RABBIT CAKE. She and James talk about spending time in cemeteries, writing in yards, giving a good reading, and how to sprinkle naked mole rat facts throughout to make the best fiction. Dave, Jami and Tony discuss the game Rocket League, the book Mr. Splitfoot by Samantha Hunt, the movie The Revenant, and the book and film adaptation of The Martian.
Join us this week as Nathan talks seemingly endlessly about Star Wars - no, not even the new one, but about the prequel trilogy, digital effects, and the curse of the 1990s. Sarah has been reading Jonathan Bate's biography of Ted Hughes, a very sharp look at a titanic talent and an utter bastard, and Sarah has also reviewed Samantha Hunt's new novel Mr Splitfoot and did not like it, which leads to a discussion about how critics feel when they need to be mean about things (poor us!) and, inexplicably, a blow-by-blow summary of several episodes of Adam Buxton's new podcast. Sorry.
With special guests: Handmade Moments, Cosmic-American, Dr Dan and Melonie, Drawing Blanks, Samantha Hunt, Amanda Ray and Voxanna!
